COGWA Board Election Results

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

COGwriter

In COGWA’s latest letter (8/17/11), its secretary wrote:

We are pleased to inform you of the official results of the recent ballot to select the seven members of our Ministerial Board of Directors (MBOD) from the list of 14 nominees. Here are the names of our new MBOD members, listed in alphabetical order:

Jim B. Franks
Douglas Robert Horchak
Clyde L. Kilough
Joel Christopher Meeker
Richard Robert Pinelli
Richard Conerly Thompson
Leon Walker

The following were all the people on the ballet:

David Lawrence Baker
Jim B. Franks
Arnold Jerome Hampton
Michael James Hanisko
Douglas Robert Horchak
Clyde L. Kilough
Leslie L. McCullough
Joel Christopher Meeker
Richard Robert Pinelli
David L. Register
Larry R. Salyer
Richard Conerly Thompson
Leon Walker
Lyle Eugene Welty

Clyde Kilough was president of UCG until April 2010 (Les McCullough was the president of UCG prior), while Leon Walker handled Latin America for UCG. The leaders in both UCG and COGWA have taken stands against Herbert W. Armstrong’s teachings on governance and neither group has put the same priority on proclaiming Christ’s gospel of the kingdom to the world as a witness like HWA did, and the Living Church of God now does (though recently, UCG has made greater strides related to public proclamation than COGWA has accomplished).

Leon Walker was a director, for a short while, of a temporary group in 2010 called COGA–a group that pretty much publicly stated that it did not stand for proclaiming the gospel (see COGA Rationalizes Away Most Public Gospel Proclamation). Despite that, “the title” that COGWA uses a lot on its webpages is “Preaching the Gospel”–we will all see what COGWA actually does.

As COGWA is still trying to figure out certain aspects of its governance (which seems to be one of its actual top priorities), its elders still may wish to read the article Polycarp, Herbert W. Armstrong, and Roderick C. Meredith on Church Government as well as the article Should the Church Still Try to Place its Top Priority on Proclaiming the Gospel or Did Herbert W. Armstrong Change that Priority for the Work?. And afterwards, perhaps reconsider why they are were they are. Others should do so as well.

Some articles of possibly related interest may include:

Attending the Church of Choice This article discusses whose choice is important to worship God; should you attend the church of your choice or the church of God’s choice?
Polycarp, Herbert W. Armstrong, and Roderick C. Meredith on Church Government What form of governance did the early church have? Was it hierarchical? Which form of governance would one expect to have in the Philadelphia remnant? The people decide and/or committee forms, odd dictatorships, or the same type that the Philadelphia era itself had?
Should a Christian Vote? This article gives some of the Biblical rationale on this subject. Would Jesus vote for president/prime minister? Is voting in the Bible? This is a subject Christians need to understand.
Unity: Which COG for You? Why so many groups? Why is there lack of unity in the Churches of God? Has it always been this way? What can/should be done about it?
Differences between the Living Church of God and United Church of God This article provides quotes information from the two largest groups which had their origins in WCG as well as commentary.
There are Many COGs: Why Support the Living Church of God? This is an article for those who wish to more easily sort out the different COGs. It really should be a MUST READ for current and former WCG/GCI members or any interested in supporting the faithful church. It also explains a lot of what the COGs are all about.
Concerns about Church of God, a Worldwide Association This seems to be the largest group that came out of the United Church of God. Here is some history and concerns about it.
Should the Church Still Try to Place its Top Priority on Proclaiming the Gospel or Did Herbert W. Armstrong Change that Priority for the Work? Some say the Church should mainly feed the flock now as that is what Herbert W. Armstrong reportedly said. Is that what he said? Is that what the Bible says? What did Paul and Herbert W. Armstrong expect from evangelists?
The Laodicean Church Era has been predominant circa 1986 A.D. to present. These are non-Philadelphians who mainly descended from the old WCG.

‘We’ve Sold Our Birthright’

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

“I will break the pride of your power” (Leviticus 26:19)

COGwriter

Has the USA sold its birthright to foreigners?  At least one secular source suggests so:

We’ve Sold Our Birthright for a Mess of Porridge
Money and Markets
Aug 17, 2011 excerpts…in the year 2000….Washington owed foreigners a total of $1 trillion….Washington now owes foreign investors over FOUR TIMES MORE than it did in 2000.

We have literally sold our birthright — our right to control our own destiny — to foreigners!

…All of this is just the preamble to the ultimate catastrophe…http://www.moneyandmarkets.com/six-steps-to-financial-doomsday-step-3-we%e2%80%99ve-sold-our-birthright-for-a-mess-of-porridge-46809

The headline of the above article is referring to a story in the Book of Genesis where Esau sells his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of lentil porridge/stew

29 Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom.   31 But Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.”   32 And Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?”  33 Then Jacob said,  “Swear to me as of this day.”  So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright. (Genesis 29-34).

But what about the United States?

Most people do not realize it, but there is another birthright story in the Bible, and it does affect the USA.  In Genesis 48, Jacob (Israel) passed on the birthright that he had to the sons of Joseph, Ephraim and Manasseh:

16 Bless the lads; Let my name be named upon them, And the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth…

19 “…He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.” 20 So he blessed them that day, saying, “By you Israel will bless, saying, ‘May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!’ ” (Genesis 48:19-20).

This is birthright transfer by Jacob is also confirmed by a statement later in the Bible:

1 Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel–he was indeed the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, so that the genealogy is not listed according to the birthright; 2 yet Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came a ruler, although the birthright was Joseph’s (1 Chronicles 5:1-2).

We in the Living Church of God have long taught that Manasseh, who was one of the only two sons of Joseph who received the birthright, is best represented in modern society by the United States of America (we also teach that Ephraim is best represented by the British-descended peoples of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with others scattered elsewhere).

But unlike Esau who at least got real food, the USA has been selling its portion of the birthright for trinkets and manufactured things that often are not needed.  Also, because they are being bought from alien peoples, this has resulted in a reduction in American manufacturing jobs.  This has hurt the economy as well as the USA’s ability to compete.

Instead of listening to what the Bible teaches, the USA has basically rebelled against God’s law.  Notice a prophecy about getting indebted to foreigners/aliens and ultimately be taken over by them, because of that:

43 The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. 45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you (Deuteronomy 28:42-45).

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…5 Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man… 6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you (Habakkuk 2:3,5,6-8).

The USA is the most indebted nation in the history of humanity and the UK may be the most indebted per capita.

National repentance is the only real long-term hope for the USA and the other Anglo-nations (and it seems to be too late for that, but personal repentance is still possible), There are carnal solutions that the Anglo-nations could do now that could help extend the situation, but too many of their leaders have rejected God and have the type of “reprobate mind” that prevents them from seeing even those “convenient” options (cf. Romans 1:18-32, KJV).

According to Bible prophecy, the end of the Anglo-dominance of the world is coming (Jeremiah 30:7; Daniel 11:39), and the final age of the Gentiles (Luke 21:20-24; Daniel 11:39) will be here in a relatively few years. And there are likely to be a lot more troubles (Mark 13:8) before it gets even worse (Mark 13:19-20).

More Calls to Make Herman van Rompuy President of the Eurozone

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

Herman Van Rompuy

COGwriter

There are more calls today in the EU to give more power to Herman van Rompuy:

BRUSSELS (AP) — The leaders of France and Germany said Wednesday that they want the heads of the eurozone countries to elect the president of a new “economic government” who would direct regular summits to respond to the continent’s financial crisis.

For many in the markets, the proposal fell short of hopes: a grand plan to save the euro and, in particular, a sign the eurozone was moving toward a single bond issued by the 17 countries.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel outlined their proposals in a letter to Herman Van Rompuy, president of the European Council. They said that they hoped Van Rompuy would get the job…

Merkel and Sarkozy said the two countries’ finance ministers would come up with a proposal by September that would be forwarded to the European Commission.A transaction tax — a small percentage taken from foreign exchange and share transactions, for instance — has been proposed as a source of money to pay for bank bailouts.  http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5h8xUHSs4V5pcZSupRQbk31t8tsiw?docId=6d50ea97e5544b3e962a87ae7bafe044

…Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel unveiled a plan on Tuesday to tax financial transactions.

The pair, under heavy pressure to restore confidence in the euro zone after a dramatic market slump, did not detail how such a tax would work. That did not stop Austria, Italy and Spain signaling that they too would support the idea.

But Ireland’s finance minister, Michael Noonan, said any new tax must apply to all 27 members of the EU and not just the 17 members of the euro zone.  http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/08/17/us-eurozone-reaction-banks-idUSTRE77G2OF20110817

PARIS — France’s President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel sent a joint letter Wednesday to EU president Herman Van Rompuy inviting him to chair a body of eurozone leaders.  http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jngv0iqhX529pOiJkht8VSghe3XQ?docId=CNG.19ab538295809bec0fdc5b4d386e42f9.391

In the past, EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy as indicated that he would support the type of financial transaction tax that French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel outlined.

Perhaps if he adds a stronger title, and gains more influence, he will be able to directly fulfill Daniel 11:20 (especially if he dies shortly after raising taxes).  Here are three translations:

Then shall arise in his place one who shall send an exactor of tribute for the glory of the kingdom. But within a few days he shall be broken, neither in anger nor in battle. (ESV)

Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle. (KJV)

Then shall stand up in his place one who shall cause a tax collector to pass through the kingdom to maintain its glory; but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle. (WEB)

Might Herman Van Rompuy fulfill that?

Perhaps.

But even if Herman Van Rompuy is not specifically prophesied to fulfill Daniel 11:20 (perhaps his successor will be), the trend in Europe is to go for a stronger leader. And ultimately, a major dictator (and I do not anticipate at this time that it will be Herman van Rompuy) will rise up (Revelation 17:12-13), the final King of the North, European Beast power of Bible prophecy.

Russia’s Putin Still Working for Eurasian Union

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin continued his quest on creating a Eurasian union:

Putin sets sights on Eurasian economic union

Financial Times, London – Aug 16, 2011

Twenty years after the Soviet Union collapsed, Vladimir Putin, the Russian prime minister, may not, as is sometimes alleged, be trying to recreate it. But he is pursuing a different project – to build a “quasi-European Union” out of former Soviet states.

A customs union he launched a year ago between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan has already removed tariffs and customs controls along the three states’ internal borders…

At a Moscow summit this month, prime ministers of the three states set an even more ambitious target – turning the grouping into a “Eurasian economic union” by 2013. There is even talk, down the line, of a common currency.

Gorbachev says Russia is going backwards

Herald Sun – ‎17 August 2011

THE Soviet Union’s last leader Mikhail Gorbachev has expressed sadness that Russia is “going backwards”, two decades after the coup that precipitated the collapse of the USSR. In a clear attack on the dominant political grouping of Vladimir Putin,  Gorbachev, 80, also warned today that Russia should not repeat the mistake of the Soviet Union in being ruled by a monopoly.Russia on Friday marks 20 years since the August 19, 1991 coup by Soviet hardliners against Gorbachev’s policy of reform which ended up hastening the demise of the entire USSR in December that year.

While Mikhail Gorbachev has an opinion, the reality is that the Bible tells of a time where an apparently Russian-led confederation of Asian nations will get together militarily.  Russia has already made a variety of military and economic deals with nations such as China and India.  It also is keenly interested in the Ukraine as well as the other nations that were once part of the old Soviet Union.

Notice that the Bible clearly states there is a group that will form from the far north:

3 O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal…6 from the far north and all its troops–many people are with you (Ezekiel 38:3,6).

14 Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog…15…you will come from your place out of the far north… (Ezekiel 38:14-15).

1 O Gog, prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal; 2 and I will turn you around and lead you on, bringing you up from the far north (Ezekiel 39:1-2).

A Russian confederation is that only place on the planet that is in the far north and currently has massive military power. A northern confederation (that appears to be led by Russia) will destroy the European Babylon presuming this has end-time applicability:

9 For behold, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon
An assembly of great nations from the north country,
And they shall array themselves against her;
From there she shall be captured.
Their arrows shall be like those of an expert warrior;
None shall return in vain. (Jeremiah 50:9)

41 “Behold, a people shall come from the north,
And a great nation and many kings
Shall be raised up from the ends of the earth.
42 They shall hold the bow and the lance;
They are cruel and shall not show mercy.
Their voice shall roar like the sea;
They shall ride on horses,
Set in array, like a man for the battle,
Against you, O daughter of Babylon. (Jeremiah 50:41-42)

In the New Testament it is shown that a group of nations known as the Kings of the East will form:

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15 Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” 16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon (Revelation 16:12-16).

This concept of Asian involvement in a major battle is confirmed in the Book of Revelation. Notice the following:

13 Then the sixth angel sounded: And I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a third of mankind. 16 Now the number of the army of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision: those who sat on them had breastplates of fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow; and the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths came fire, smoke, and brimstone. 18 By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed–by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths(Revelation 9:13-18).

Only China, and possibly India and others in Asia, which would apparently align themselves with a Russia confederation against the European Empire, are capable of fielding a two hundred million man army

The Bible shows that a Eurasian military union will happen involving those from the north AND the east will form and frighten the European King of the North:

…the king of the North… 43 He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. 44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. 45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him (Dan 11:40,43-45).

And will all of that WILL happen, it is likely that it may be proceeded by various types of economic unions and/or treaties.  Such as what Vladimir Putin has been proposing.

Panetta: Gaddafi’s Days are Numbered

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

Muammar al-Gaddafi

COGwriter

Libya’s leader seems to be getting into a tougher situation as the USA is indicating he will not last too much longer:

Panetta Says Gaddafi’s Days ‘Are Numbered’

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says Libyan rebels are advancing toward Tripoli from the east and west, and there now is a sense that Moammar Gadhafi’s days in power “are numbered.” Panetta and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton discussed Libya, Syria and other Middle East issues at a public forum in Washington.

The Libyan rebels have been claiming battlefield advances in recent days. Panetta’s comments, though, were the first by a senior Obama administration official in that span suggesting Gadhafi’s position is indeed eroding.  (Voice of America, August 16, 2011)

NATO Condemns Libya’s Use of Scud Missile

Spokeswoman says move shows Gadhafi government is ‘desperate’ as rebels close in on capital..

The expression about days being numbered come from the Bible:

24 Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.

25 “And this is the inscription that was written:

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

26 This is the interpretation of each word. Mene: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; 27 Tekel: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; 28 Peres: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.” 29 Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. (Daniel 5:24-29, NKJV)

I even quoted the above in an article back in February titled Gaddafi Vows to Fight to Death, and He May End Up That Way.

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, in the past, indicated that he wanted to lead Islam and Africa (see Qaddafi Hailed as “King of Kings”), yet I never really felt he would be the final King of the South.  He will either be gone or will end up supporting such a leader.

As I have been saying for many months, the current Middle East turmoil seems to be being set for the rise of that leader.  A re-alignment in the Arab world is happening and Libya will be part of it (Daniel 11:40-43).

Watch (cf. Mark 13:33-37).

Europe Making More Strides Towards Being a United Empire

European Union Tower of Babel Poster

Many in Europe want a closer more united empire, though they are using other terms for it:

Germany, France propose collective ‘government’ for the eurozone led by EU president.

Germany, France call for European economic government

AP – Aug 16, 2011
The leaders of France and Germany are pushing all 17 nations that use the euro currency to enshrine balanced budgets in their constitutions and move toward greater collective governance of the eurozone.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy says he and German Chancellor Angela Merkel want a “true European economic government” that would consist of the heads of state and government of all eurozone nations.

The new body would meet twice a year and be led by EU President Herman Van Rompuy. http://www.usatoday.com/money/world/2011-08-16-france-germany-euro-budgets_n.htm

EUROPE ‘ON COURSE TO BECOME ONE COUNTRY’
Express, UK – Aug 15, 2011
DAVID Cameron was under mounting pressure last night to hold a referendum on EU membership amid claims that the Coalition is paving the way for full eurozone financial integration.

So, additional steps towards more European integration are continuing as we in the Living Church of God have long taught–though there will be bumps in the road and problems (major civil unrest, or worse, may occur).

Whether or not the EU itself will exist in the future can be speculated (the Bible points to a reorganization in Revelation 17:12-13), yet the Bible is clear that the final European Beast power will not actually be highly unified as it will basically be a combination of strong and weak, or as the Bible more literally states, iron and clay:

41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. (Daniel 2:41-43)

According to Bible prophecy, a European power, despite its fragility, is destined to temporarily be the most dominant force in the world, and ultimately declare real war on the Anglo-descended nations.

But before it is destroyed (Daniel 11:44), the final Beast power must come together and get to the place where it has major economic influence.  Europe has been taking steps to stand up against the old world financial order (which to a great degree has been dominated by the United Kingdom and then the United States for well over a century).

‘Doomsday’ Defense Cuts

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

COGwriter

The US Secretary of Defense and other politicians are now concerned by ‘doomsday’ cuts in the U.S. defense budget:

Hedging Against Doomsday Defense Cuts

Seeking Alpha – David Pinsen – ‎16 August 2011

Not surprisingly, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has described the automatic cuts as the “doomsday mechanism.”

Doomsdaydefense cuts loom large for select 12

The Associated Press – ‎Aug 14, 2011‎

WASHINGTON (AP) — For the dozen lawmakers tasked with producing a deficit-cutting plan, the threatened “doomsdaydefense cuts hit close to home.

The so-called ‘doomsday’ defense cuts are to be automatically triggered if certain other cuts cannot be agreed upon by a special debt panel and the US Congress.  Even if those cuts are not triggered later this year, the reality is that US defense spending is going to be impacted by the US fiscal crisis.

When I wrote the book , 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect, my primary focus was on what would likely happen during the years 2012 through 2020. But of course, for many of the events to occur, certain world events need to align themselves prior to that for them to come to pass.

On this defense spending subject, my 2009 book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect warned:

Because of domestic economic concerns and international pressures, Barack Obama is shifting priorities away from defense spending… This will help lead to the destruction of the United States, when the Europeans are ready and the U.S.A. is not (Chapter 8).

“Doomsday’ cuts in the U.S.’s defense budget are consistent with what the book warned.  And that warning was based upon prophecies in Daniel 11:39 and Habakkuk 2, as well as other scriptures.  FWIW, I believe that certain non-biblical prophecies will be used by the coming European Beast power to justify taking over the USA and its Anglo-allies (and these are cited in the 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect book)

World events continue to align with properly understood biblical prophecy.

If you have not already done so, you should consider acquiring the book, 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect. It is available in several languages, as well as through Kindle and Barnes&Noble.com.

New Zealand Hit with Polar Blast

While the south island of New Zealand has been hit with almost 8,000 earthquakes since September 2010, the south island, as well as the normally warm north island, have been hit by a polar blast:

Snow in winterless north as weather causes chaos

Aug 16, 2011

Snow has reached the winterless north as a major winter storm sweeping up the country causes major disruption – closing schools, roads, airports and crippling public transport.

Mount Tutamoe, just north of Dargaville, was dusted with snow this morning. Beef farmer Terry McDermott, who lives close to the mountain, says it’s a first for him. http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/5450195/Snow-in-winterless-north-as-weather-causes-chaos

Polar blast ‘one in 50 year event’
Aug 15, 2011
The bitterly cold southerly blast bringing snow to much of New Zealand, closing roads, some airports and cutting power to thousands, is close to a one in 50 year event, says MetService.  Snow has made roads impassable in many areas of both islands. http://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/173602/polar-blast-one-50-year-event

So New Zealand has had a lot of troubles in the past year.  The polar blast is now another.  My wife and I have visited New Zealand in 1987 and I have had concerns about it since.

Jesus, of course, warned about a time with troubles:

8 … And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be…troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

The Bible repeatedly indicates that “natural disasters” are intended to get people (and nations) to repent.  The sorrows that Jesus referred to may have begun.

There will be other problems in New Zealand and elsewhere. The beginning of sorrows is not yet over, and the time of Jacob’s trouble (Jeremiah 30:7), AKA the Great Tribulation, will follow it.

Whether or not your nation repents, you can personally. There is a Place of Safety for the Philadelphians and it may Be Petra.

Gold Standard Dropped 40 Years Ago, Today, But Gold Up

Monday, August 15th, 2011

The 220 kg Gold brick displayed in Taiwan

COGwriter

Forty-years ago today, the USA dropped the connection between its dollar and gold.  Some have wondered if that is a factor in the current economic woes:

40 years after US stopped using it to back currency, it trades at record highs in part due to economic fears.

Gold has increased in value much more than the official government inflation rates since the USA detached its dollar from any type of gold standard.  The price gold will fluctuate (for more current gold quotes, check out the Financial Information link, which also has links to stocks, currencies, and other financial valuations), but gold was up the last time I looked today.

The idea of gold could be accumulated to back a new currency, while the US dollar tanks, is discussed on page 333 of my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect. And this appears to be what will happen, as well is what is we see sometimes beginning to happen now.

The financial world is somewhat starting to understand some of this–but few really know how bad it will get. The biblical reality is that US dollar will ultimately be worthless and the USA ultimately taken over because of its sins and debt. Increased interest gold (and silver) suggest decreased interest in the US dollar. Of course, with the rapid rise in the price of gold in the past few weeks, it may go down–though I believe that after the US dollar is worthless, gold still will have value (Daniel 11; Revelation 18), for a while.

But the real problems that the US was causing forty-years ago had to do with increased public acceptance of sin.  Homosexuality was just starting to sometimes be portrayed as “normal” on prime-time television then.  Also, US States were increasing starting to legalize abortions then.  These and other sins are what really brought on debt and the economic crises:

43 The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. 44 He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. 45 Moreover all these curses shall come upon you and pursue and overtake you, until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which He commanded you (Deuteronomy 28:42-45).

The un-linking to gold, while a factor in the current economic crisis, is simply not the root cause (though it has helped many weather this current storm).

Of course, gold will not save humanity, only Jesus can do that, but it may be prudent for people to consider the signs of the times.

Assumption of Mary or Diana?

Monday, August 15th, 2011

COGWriter

August 15th is a holiday known as the Assumption of Mary.

Wikipedia made the following observations:

According to the belief…of the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Catholic Churches, the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Oriental Orthodox Churches, and the Anglican Communion, the Assumption of Mary was the bodily taking up of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her life. The Roman Catholic Church teaches as dogma that the Virgin Mary, “having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.”[1] This doctrine was dogmatically and infallibly defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, in his Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus. This belief is known as the Dormition by the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches. In the churches which observe it, the Assumption is a major festival, commonly celebrated on August 15. In many countries it is a Catholic Holy Day of Obligation…In East Orthodox churches following the Julian Calendar, the feast day of Assumption of Mary falls on August 28, and is also a public holiday in the Republic of Macedonia.

One Catholic writer noted:

Many people, even Catholics, don’t believe in the assumption of Mary.

(Rozett E. Mother Mary and the Goddess. http://www.interfaithmary.com/pages/mary_rosary.html, viewed 08/15/2011)

I would like to add that many take devotion to “Mary” quite seriously. Below is a photo my wife Joyce took of prayer notes to “Mary” next to where her final home in Ephesus was supposed to be:

Now it is possible that Mary did live in Ephesus. Basically, the Bible records that Jesus asked the Apostle John to take care of His mother while He was being crucified, and John accepted (John 19:26-27). As far as John being in Ephesus, Polycrates sent a letter to Pope Victor towards the end of the second century and stated that John died in Ephesus (Eusebius. Church History. Book V, Chapter 25). Hence, it is logical that Mary could have as well. The fact that Mary was not mentioned in that letter from Polycrates (and many were) indicates that she may not have gone to Ephesus–she may, for one possibility, simply have died in the Jerusalem area before John moved to Ephesus (which was likely the mid-late 60s A.D.).

But this belief in the “Assumption of Mary”–the teaching that she did perhaps did not die but went directly to heaven (or was “assumed” into heaven at death)–is based on assumption, mysticism, and apparently compromise.

The Catholic Encyclopedia admits:

Regarding the day, year, and manner of Our Lady’s death, nothing certain is known…The dates assigned for it vary between three and fifteen years after Christ’s Ascension. Two cities claim to be the place of her departure: Jerusalem and Ephesus. Common consent favours Jerusalem, where her tomb is shown; but some argue in favour of Ephesus. The first six centuries did not know of the tomb of Mary at Jerusalem. The belief in the corporeal assumption of Mary is founded on the apocryphal treatise De Obitu S. Dominae, bearing the name of St. John, which belongs however to the fourth or fifth century. It is also found in the book De Transitu Virginis, falsely ascribed to St. Melito of Sardis, and in a spurious letter attributed to St. Denis the Areopagite.(Holweck, Frederick. “The Feast of the Assumption.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 2. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1907. 14 Aug. 2010 <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02006b.htm>)

So, according to The Catholic Encyclopedia the basis for the “belief in the corporeal assumption of Mary is founded on the apocryphal” texts which were claimed to be written by people (like the Apostle John and Melito of Sardis) who did not write them. This makes no sense as a source for any dogma people would hold to be true. Also, if Mary was “assumed” into heaven 3-15 years after Christ’s ascension in the Book of Acts, then why is it not mentioned in sacred scripture?  All the books of the New Testament were written at least 5 years after Jesus’ ascension and the last book (Revelation) was apparently written over 60 years later–hence if this is a doctrine that God wanted His people to accept, why is it not specifically mentioned in the Bible? The Catholic writer Epiphanius, in the late fourth century, wrote:

Perhaps this [Rev. 12:13-14] can be applied to her; I cannot decide for certain, and I am not saying that she remained immortal. But neither am I saying that she died. (Panarion of Epiphanius, 78.11.4. As cited in Shoemaker S. The Ancient Traditions of the Virgin Mary’s Dormition and Assumption. Oxford University Press, 2006, p. 12)

Notice what a Catholic translation of the scripture Epiphanius referred to actually states:

13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman, who brought forth the man child: 14 And there were given to the woman two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the desert unto her place, where she is nourished for a time and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. (Revelation 12:13-14, Douay-Rheims).

Notice that “the woman” goes to “the desert” and “here she is nourished for a time and times, and half a time”. Heaven is NOT a desert. Also understand that Catholic scholars tend to correctly believe that the expression “a time and times, and half a time” refers to 3 1/2 years (and even if that was in error, this is a finite period of time, not nearly two thousand years). Thus, it makes no sense that Revelation 12:13-14 could possibly apply to Mary. Epiphanius should have been able to decide for certain that it did not, around 400 years after she was born. It should be clear that the idea of Mary’s “assumption” was not a dogmatic belief centuries after she would likely have been expected to have died. Of course, the Bible was clear in the mid-late 1st century that only Jesus had immortality:

13 I charge thee before God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate, a good confession, 14 That thou keep the commandment without spot, blameless, unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15 Which in his times he shall shew who is the Blessed and only Mighty, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; 16 Who only hath immortality, and inhabiteth light inaccessible, whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and empire everlasting. Amen. (1 Timothy 6:13-16, Douay-Rheims)

Note that I used the Catholic-approved Douay-Rheims translation in this article to show that these ideas have support even within Catholic-approved writings. If Mary was immortal then, then the Apostle Paul would not have been inspired to write that. The Catholic Saint Augustine wrote of “her death” (Augustine. Tractates on the Gospel of John (Augustine) > Tractate 8, Chapter 9. Translated by John Gibb. From Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, First Series, Vol. 7. Edited by Philip Schaff. (Buffalo, NY: Christian Literature Publishing Co., 1888.) Revised and edited for New Advent by Kevin Knight. <http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/1701008.htm>), thus the idea of Mary dying was an old concept. Dr. Douglas Winnail made the following observation:

The Bible never refers to Mary’s “Immaculate Conception”—the doctrine that she was born without sin. Nor does it teach the “Assumption”—the doctrine that Mary was bodily transported to heaven. Rather, Scripture clearly states that “no one has ascended to heaven” except Jesus (John 3:13). (Winnail DS. The Lady of Nations. Tomorrow’s World, LCG Magazine. Nov-Dec 2003).

So where did the idea of Mary’s assumption come from? Basically, from apocryphal literature in the fourth century (or possibly as early as the late third century)–but mainly even later than that. Although Epiphanius tried to investigate it, he was uncertain.

Goddess Diana and Islamic Connections

Interestingly, the ancient Romans had a 3 day festival for the goddess Diana. On the third day, August 15, they apparently celebrated her assumption into heaven as the queen of heaven. This is the same day of the Catholic feast of the assumption of Mary. Some do not consider this to be coincidental. (Green CMC. Roman religion and the cult of Diana at Aricia, Volume 0, Issues 521-85150. Cambridge University Press, 2007, p. 62; Frazer JG.  The Magic Art and the Evolution of Kings V1, Volume 1. Kessinger Publishing, 2006, pp. 14-17).  Diana was known as the “revered virgin” (Fischer-Hansen T, Poulsen B.  From Artemis to Diana: the goddess of man and beast.  Museum Tusculanum Press, 2009, p. 56) and “the Lady Artemis” (Davidson HE.  Roles of the northern goddess.  Psychology Press, 1998, p. 18); also as ”the virgin” (Morford MPO, Lenardon RJ.  Classical mythology, 6th edition.  Oxford University Press US, 1999, p. 141).

There is a suspected connection between Diana and how many view Mary (Fischer-Hansen, p. 49). Yet, the Catholic saint Augustine specifically referred to Diana as one of several “false and lying deities” (Augustine.  The Harmony of the Gospels, Book I, Chapter 25.  Translated by S.D.F. Salmond. From Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, First Series, Vol. 6. Edited by Philip Schaff. (Buffalo, NY: Christian Literature Publishing Co., 1888.) Revised and edited for New Advent by Kevin Knight. <http://www.newadvent.org/fathers/1602125.htm>).  Hence, it would seem wise that Catholics consider the wisdom in observing the date of her claimed assumption into heaven. Mary’s “assumption” apparently became more of an issue after the death of Mohammed. Wikipedia notes:

John of Damascus, from this period, is the first church authority to advocate the doctrine under his own name; he had been brought up in an environment in which a corporeal ascent of Muhammed into heaven was official policy, since he, and his father before him, held the post of imperial chancellor of the Islamic empire of the Umayyads, and Muhammed’s ascent into heaven is the subject of the Night Journey, a Surah in the Quran. His contemporaries, Gregory of Tours and Modestus of Jerusalem, helped promote the concept to the wider church.

A Catholic writer posted:

The occasion and the site are sacred to Muslims and Christians alike. Every Sunday at least some Muslims come here before ‘Hazreti Meryem Ana’, Her Majesty Mother Mary and attend mass.

(Rozett E. Mother Mary and the Goddess. http://www.interfaithmary.com/pages/mary_Islam.html, viewed 08/15/2011)

Apparently because the Muslims claimed that Muhammed, and Greco-Romans that the goddess Diana, went to directly to heaven, certain Catholics began to promote the idea.

Place of Mary’s Final Location Changed?

However, it should be pointed out that even the place of the “assumption” changed. Wikipedia reports:

In some versions of the story the event is said to have taken place in Ephesus, in the House of the Virgin Mary, although this is a much more recent and localized tradition. The earliest traditions all locate the end of Mary’s life in Jerusalem…

So, the earliest accounts claimed Jerusalem, but that was later changed to Ephesus by some. If Mary died 3-15 years after Jesus, then she likely did not die in the area near Ephesus. Another article in The Catholic Encyclopedia mentions:

As to tradition, there is some testimony for Mary’s temporary residence in or near Ephesus, but the evidence for her permanent home in Jerusalem is much stronger… In Panaghia Kapoli, on a hill about nine or ten miles distant from Ephesus, was discovered a house, or rather its remains, in which Mary is supposed to have lived. The house was found, as it had been sought, according to the indications given by Catherine Emmerich in her life of the Blessed Virgin… In 451 Juvenal, Bishop of Jerusalem, testified to the presence of Mary’s tomb in Jerusalem…Another witness for the existence of a tradition placing the tomb of Mary in Gethsemani is the basilica erected above the sacred spot, about the end of the fourth or the beginning of the fifth century… It has been seen that we have no absolute certainty as to the place in which Mary lived after the day of Pentecost. Though it is more probable that she remained uninterruptedly in or near Jerusalem, she may have resided for a while in the vicinity of Ephesus, and this may have given rise to the tradition of her Ephesian death and burial. There is still less historical information concerning the particular incidents of her life. (Maas, Anthony. “The Blessed Virgin Mary.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 15. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1912. 14 Aug. 2010 <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/15464b.htm>)

Of course, the presence of a tomb suggests that one was buried within it, not assumed directly to heaven. Others have claimed her body left the tomb:

In the eighth century, St. John Damascene was known for giving sermons at the holy places in Jerusalem. At the Tomb of Mary, he expressed the belief of the Church on the meaning of the feast: “Although the body was duly buried, it did not remain in the state of death, neither was it dissolved by decay. . . . You were transferred to your heavenly home, O Lady, Queen and Mother of God in truth.” (Stevens C, Priest. Assumption of Mary. Catholic Heritage, July-August 1996. http://www.ewtn.com/library/answers/aofmary.htm)

S. Shoemaker also claims that the earliest accounts of the assumption state it occurred in Jerusalem, but later Ephesus:

Nevertheless, the earliest evidence of any such belief appears only in the ninth century, in a Syriac manuscript, copied in 874 which reports that Mary accompanied John to Ephesus, where she died and was buried. (Shoemaker S. The Ancient Traditions of the Virgin Mary’s Dormition and Assumption. Oxford University Press, 2006, p. 75)

Did Mysticism Play a Role?

Anne Catherine Emmerich

There is a plaque outside of Ephesus near the house that Mary allegedly lived in from the Church of Rome which basically declares that this is Mary’s house (I read the plaque when I was last there). Pope Pius XII declared it a Holy Place as did Pope John XXIII (it is an important religious site for Muslims too); Wikipedia reports “Pope Paul VI visited the shrine on July 26, 1967, and ‘unofficially’ confirmed its authenticity.” The idea that Mary’s house was specifically there was allegedly developed because of visions that the mystic nun Anne Catherine Emmerich claimed to have had in the early 19th century. Because of her visions, one or more priests went to Ephesus and found a house apparently matching her descriptions (Shoemaker, p. 76). Some in the local area confirmed the location as Mary’s last house. And while some may claim that is proof it was Mary’s home, I should also add that Anne Catherine Emmerich claimed to have seen Limbo in her visions, yet the current Pontiff (Benedict XVI) has indicated that there is no such place as Limbo (What is Limbo? Is There Such a Place as Limbo? What Happens to Babies When They Die?). Despite this, on October 3, 2004 Anne Catherine Emmerich was beatified by Pope John Paul II.

But irrespective of what location may have been “Mary’s house”, the historical accuracy of the “assumption of Mary”, is at best an assumption that seems to contradict scripture. Although some have claimed that the apostles originally reported “the assumption” there do not appear to be any pre-fourth century documents that state this (and even the “apostolic claim” was from testimony in the mid-fifth century by Juvenal, see The Catholic Encyclopedia Assumption of Mary).

The assumption position mainly seems to be have been accepted because people want to believe it as opposed to basing it upon reliable historical documentation:

In view of the striking absence of early historical evidence, the Vatican proceeded to establish the Assumption dogma primarily on a dogmatic rather than a historical basis. It was determined that despite the complete lack of any historical evidence for early belief in the Virgin’s Assumption, the dogma should still be proclaimed…(Shoemaker S. The Ancient Traditions of the Virgin Mary’s Dormition and Assumption. Oxford University Press, 2006, p. 15)

Wikipedia also noted:

Protestant theologians…cite the fact that the idea did not gain acceptance in the church until the sixth century, after Gregory of Tours accepted the apocryphal work “Transitus Beatae Mariae”…Catholic theologian Ludwig Ott stated, “The idea of the bodily assumption of Mary is first expressed in certain transitus-narratives of the fifth and sixth centuries…. The first Church author to speak of the bodily assumption of Mary, in association with an apocryphal transitus B.M.V., is St. Gregory of Tours.”…The Catholic writer Eamon Duffy goes further, conceding that “there is, clearly, no historical evidence whatever for it.”…

In Ludwig Ott’s Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma he states that “the fact of her death is almost generally accepted by the Fathers and Theologians, and is expressly affirmed in the Liturgy of the Church”, to which he adduces a number of helpful citations, and concludes that “for Mary, death, in consequence of her freedom from original sin and from personal sin, was not a consequence of punishment of sin. However, it seems fitting that Mary’s body, which was by nature mortal, should be, in conformity with that of her Divine Son, subject to the general law of death”…The point of her bodily death has not been infallibly defined, and many believe that she did not die at all, but was assumed directly into Heaven. The dogmatic definition within the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus which, according to Roman Catholic dogma, infallibly proclaims the doctrine of the Assumption leaves open the question whether, in connection with her departure, Mary underwent bodily death; that is, it does not dogmatically define the point one way or the other, as shown by the words “having completed the course of her earthly life”…Many Catholics also believe that Mary first died before being assumed, but they add that she was miraculously resurrected before being assumed…This doctrine was dogmatically and infallibly defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, in his Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus.

The holiday, then, is an assumption based upon mystic literature like the Transitus Mariae, essentially combined with a dogmatic declaration in 1950.

Now, the Transitus Mary was allegedly an account from an apparition claiming to be Mary. Yet, Catholics need to realize that in the early 6th century, a papal decree, Decretum Gelasianum, classified the Transitus Mariae writings as apocryphal (The Transitus Mariae Non-canonical Account of Mary’s passing. http://www.bibleprobe.com/transitusmariae.htm). Anyway, the Transitus Mariae claims that John was in Ephesus and the Holy Spirit transported him to Mary in Bethlehem (Smith Lewis A. Apocrypha syriaca: the Protevangelium Jacobi and Transitus Mariae, with texts from the Septuagint, the Corân, the Peshiṭta, and from a Syriac hymm in a Syro-Arabic palimpsest of the fifth and other centuries. C.J. Clay and sons, 1902, p. 25) and that Mary was taken in to heaven from her house in Bethlehem (p. 33) and that was within the jurisdiction of the governor of Jerusalem (p. 36).

Now, having been to Ephesus a couple of times, I would like mention the Islamic Turks in that area actually do celebrate the “assumption of Mary” as well. Not because it is mentioned in the Quran (it does not seem to be), but because Mary is mentioned in the Quran more times than Jesus.  Muslims tend to venerate Mary to a degree.

Perhaps I should add that August 15th is considered by certain Catholics to be Mary’s “heavenly birthday”. However, perhaps it should be pointed out that early Christians did not observe birthdays (Did Early Christians Celebrate Birthdays?), hence the “birthday into heaven” position also was not a position of early Christians.

Why the Assumption of Mary Dogma?

Notice what the Catholic news agency Zenit reported:

Why a…dogmatic pronouncement on the Assumption? Because the Vicar of Christ…was inspired to do so to bring forth a new outpouring of grace for the Church through the intercession of the Queen of Heaven — the Mediatrix of all graces who was newly honored by a solemn papal proclamation of her parting earthly prerogative…

One objection voiced during the months preceding the 1950 definition by a group of theologians was that the new Marian definition would wreak havoc to ecumenical efforts newly initiated with other Christians. The late Cardinal Edouard Gagnon who lived through the years preceding and proceeding the Assumption definition, repeatedly testified to the opposite — that immediately following the papal proclamation of Our Lady’s Assumption, the Church experienced its greatest ever advancement in ecumenism in Church history up to its time, which consequently led to its historic flourishing at the Second Vatican Council.

So, the dogma is for the eventual ecumenical plans of the Church of Rome.

Based upon visions of various mystics, current practices of the Church of Rome, and biblical prophecies associated with “signs and lying wonders” (2 Thessalonians 2:9), it seems likely that apparitions claiming to be Mary may mislead others in the future in order to encourage ecumenical unification across church lines. And this view, is not unique to me.

The following was written over a decade ago by a member of the Orthodox Church and is warning people that false apparitions claiming to be Mary will lead to people to Antichrist:

…is it any wonder that contemporary “apparitions” of Mary are invariably accompanied by ecumenistic messages promoting the idea that all religions are equally valid and Orthodox Christianity is but one “path” among many? A recent issse of Orthodox Traidition (1966) contains the account of Matushka (wife of a Russian Orthodox priest) Katherine Swanson’s trip to Medjugorje, Croatia, to investigate the most famous of the recent cases of appartions of Mary in the Roman Catholic world. In it she recounts a telling episode:

Our guide took our group for an audience with the “seers.” During this audience, a pilgrim asked one of the children the following questions: “Does the Virgin say that the Catholic Church is the true church?” The response given by the child provides clear evidence of the ecumenical content and religious relativism which, oddly enough, increasingly mark the “revelations” at Medjugorje: “Our Blessed Mother says that all religions are equally pleasing to God.“…

To which Mary are Muslims and Protestants being drawn?

Today, as heterodox Christians become more and more ecumenist and work toward creating a “One World Church,” the search has begun for a Mary of universal recognition, one who will appeal not only to those who bear the name Christian, but apprently to Muslims and others as well, just as attempts are likewise being made to identify the “new Christ” with the Muslim concept of their coming Mahdi and with the Messiah still awaited by the Jews. This, of course, will be no Christ at all but the antichrist.

(Jackson P. ORTHODOX LIFE., No. I, 1997., Brotherhood of Saint Job of Pochaev at Holy Trinity Monastery, Jordanville, N.Y. pp. 18-22. http://fr-d-serfes.org/orthodox/theotokos.htm viewed 05/11/09)

The reality is that it is likely that false apparitions, claiming to be “Mary” may be among the signs and lying wonders that the Bible warns are coming (2 Thessalonians 2:9).

Hence, if people assume that Mary was “assumed” (taken up) to heaven, many people will likely also accept that she is current alive today (even though she, like others, is awaiting the resurrection, cf. 1 Thessalonians 4:15-16). Thus, they may be favorably inclined to listen to one in the future who will claim to be her.

Don’t assume that Mary was assumed to heaven, nor assume that if in the future there are public apparitions claiming to be Mary, that they are in fact her. Mary is dead and awaiting the resurrection. And while the Bible does call her “blessed” (Luke 1:28,42), her veneration and assumption into heaven are not biblical doctrines, nor were they held by even the Church of Rome until after the start of the fourth century (or late third century).

The idea of an “assumption of Mary” is only an assertion, originally based upon literature declared to be apocryphal as well as mystic visions that were also faulty.   The date chosen was the same date that the assumption of the pagan goddess Diana was celebrated on.  The “assumption of Mary” should not be dogma as it was not the position of the early Church.

Sadly, it is expected to be an ecumenical tool that will not be good. Neither for the Orthodox or the Vatican (Revelation 17:15-17).
