COGWA Elects Jim Franks President

In COGWA’s latest letter (9/01/11), its Board stated the following (bolding mine):

The officers selected were Jim Franks as president, David Johnson as secretary and Jason Lovelady as treasurer…

This meeting, held in Orlando, Florida, began on Monday morning…In the afternoon Jason Ranew, the Church’s legal counsel, assisted the MBOD in a review of the governing documents recently approved by the elders…On Tuesday we reviewed, edited and approved by resolution the criteria and process outline for selection, then recessed for a time for personal prayer before selecting the officers…

After determining that a small office is indeed necessary to function effectively, a task force of Clyde Kilough (chair), Dave Johnson, Dave Evans and Jason Lovelady was appointed to conduct a location study and report back to the president and board prior to the MBOD’s annual meeting set for Dec. 5-8…

On Wednesday the group discussed, in general, what is needed for areas of operation, primarily in Ministerial Services and Media, and what qualities will be needed for managers to oversee those areas.  We then moved to suggestions for men who could serve on the Doctrine Committee and the MEAC…

The next focus of discussion centered on going forward with fulfilling the Church’s mission…The ideas put forward were not designed to lead to decisions, but to begin considering issues that are important to our future work.

In the afternoon we reviewed the latest financial report to be aware of income and spending trends…Finally, brethren, we are very well aware that you have been concerned and praying fervently about the success of these meetings.

COGWA was formed out of a split from the United Church of God in 2010 (the overwhelming majority of the Latin American ministers and slightly more than 1/2 of the paid US ministry in UCG went with COGWA).

Thus far, COGWA’s primary focus has appeared to be to pay its ministry, come up with a governance system that is similar to UCG, and to take other steps to support the ministry.  It does, of course, hold services for its members and has had a variety of internal talks about someday doing public proclamation of the gospel.

To put this into historical perspective, the old Global Church of God was on radio in about 2 months after its formation, and when the faithful reformed as the Living Church of God, LCG was on television across the USA in less than two months of its formation.  COGWA, like UCG before it, simply has demonstrated that it has different priorities than I believe that Jesus set for the Church (Matthew 28:19-20; 24:14).  Since declaring it in 1995, I have believed that the governance structure of UCG, and now COGWA, would result in that type of difference.

Syrian Protestors More Determined; EU Now Supporting Their Cause, But…

The Syrians are continuing their protests today, while the EU took another step to support their cause:

(Reuters) – The European Union agreed to impose sanctions on Syrian oil exports on Friday, escalating pressure on President Bashar al-Assad as protesters across Syria vowed to choose “death rather than humiliation.”  http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/02/us-syria-idUSTRE77S5IH20110902

As I have been writing here for some time, the situation in Syria, Libya, and the rest of the Middle East will likely be chaotic until a strong leader rises up in that region that will transcend current national boundaries. No matter what the Syrian government attempts to do to stop this, an pan-Arabic confederation is going to form which will cross current national boundaries.

Those of us in the Living Church of God believe that Bible prophecy tells of a time when the Arab nations will unite under a leader shown as the final King of the South in the Book of Daniel (e.g. Daniel 11:40). Many Muslims seem to be looking for such a leader, though they tend to use the title Caliph or Mahdi. We also believe that an Islamic confederation will take place that certain Europeans will support that will not turn out well for the Anglo-Israel descended peoples (Psalm 83:2-8)–including Syrians.

Notice what a December 1979 Plain Truth article by Keith Stump’s titled The Arab World in Prophecy states:

“They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee: The tabernacles of Edom [Esau or modern-day Turkey, a non-Arab but Islamic nation], and the Ishmaelites [Saudi Arabia]; of Moab [part of Jordan[, and the Hagarenes [anciently these peoples dwelt in the area known as Syria today]; Gebal [Lebanon], and Ammon [modern Jordan], and Amalek [part of the Turks]; the Philistines [the modern Palestinians] with the inhabitants of Tyre [Lebanon]; Assur [whose descendants, the Assyrians, migrated to Germany] also is joined with them: they have holpen the children of Lot [Jordan and Western Iraq]” (Psalm 83:4-8)…

But in the end, this European-Arab alliance will prove short-lived…And the king of the north shall come against him [the king of the south]…The Arab-Moslem Confederation will, of course, be thrown into chaotic disarray in the fact of invasion.

What is currently happening in Syria seems to aligning with the rise the leader of a pan-Arabic confederation that all should watch for as ultimately I believe that the current regime in Syria will likely change.  While President Sarkozy of France is somewhat claiming EU victory in Libya and Syria (http://euobserver.com/13/113486), and the Europeans will make deals with the Muslims (Daniel 9:27; 11:27; Psalm 83:2-8), what is starting to be formed in the Middle East will turn against the final European King of the North:

40 At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. 41 He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon. 42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. 43 He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. (Daniel 11:40-43).

The people of Syria are not listed as those that escape.  Other passages seem to warn that Syria specifically will not do well.

The capital of Syria is Damascus (cf. Isaiah 7:8), it is believed to be the oldest continually inhabited city on earth.  Yet, notice what the Bible shows will happen to it:

1 An oracle concerning Damascus:
“See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins. 2 The cities of Aroer will be deserted and left to flocks, which will lie down, with no one to make them afraid. 3 The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim, and royal power from Damascus;the remnant of Aram will be like the glory of the Israelites,” declares the LORD Almighty. (Isaiah 17:1-3)

3 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment…5 I will also break the gate bar of Damascus,
And cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven,
And the one who holds the scepter from Beth Eden.
The people of Syria shall go captive to Kir,”
Says the Lord. (Amos 1:3, 5)

It is possible that the future King of the South may for a time be in Damascus and this may be part of why it will be destroyed. This destruction may be related to the prophecy of the King of the North eliminating the King of the South in Daniel 11:40-43. The government military actions currently going on in Syria will not prevent this; nor will the new EU sanctions.  (On the other hand, as I have written elsewhere, instead what might happen is that Syria might support Iran and perhaps be involved in an invasion of Jerusalem and Israel.  If so, this might be how Isaiah 17:1 is fulfilled.)  We all should watch (cf. Mark 13).

Sarkozy Advocating EU to Confirm Middle East Peace Deal?

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Nicolas Sarkozy, President of France
Nicolas Sarkozy

COGwriter

The president of France is advocating more European Union involvement in the Middle East:

Libya war marks new chapter in EU-US relations

EUobserver – Sept 1, 2011

The EU will in future play a bigger role vis-a-vis the US in providing hard security in north Africa and the Middle East, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said…

Sarkozy noted the union should also play a bigger role in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

“The role of the US [in the Middle East peace process] is incontrovertible and irreplacable, but everyone can see it is not sufficient. It is necessary to enlarge the circle of negotiators … We must keep in mind that the European Union is the top economic partner of Israel and the top aid donor to the Palestinians.” http://euobserver.com/13/113486

The Bible tells of a time where a European leader will make a deal or two with the Muslims, and that one or two of them will not be very nice (Daniel 11:27; Psalm 83:2-8).

Additionally, the Bible also tells of a time when a European leader confirms what many believe will be a Middle East peace deal, but who will also later break it:

27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
But in the middle of the week
He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
Even until the consummation, which is determined,
Is poured out on the desolate. (Daniel 9:27)

LCG: Is Gold Your Best End-Time Investment?

The 220 kg Gold brick displayed in Taiwan

COGwriter

Here is today’s commentary from the Living Church of God (LCG):

By Wyatt Ciesielka | Thursday, September 01, 2011
Fears of a “double-dip” recession, or an economic depression are growing. Some financial experts now urge: “Buy gold. Buy silver. Get as far away as you can from U.S. currency and the U.S. economy” (YahooFinance.com, August 4, 2011). Considering recent stock-market trauma, and recent record gold highs approaching $1,850/oz., many are turning to gold. So, what is a Christian’s best investment strategy?

While gold has always been precious, its rapid price gains are a recent phenomenon. Only in the last 40 years has gold been a high-yield investment—one that some believe may now be the only “safe-haven” (CNBC.com, August 18, 2011). For example, a $5,000 investment in gold in 1810 would have still been worth about $5,000 an entire century later! The price of gold gradually increased to about $35-$40/oz. during World War I and World War II, and it basically remained at that level until 1971—the year when the post-war “Bretton Woods system” of international financial relations was dismantled, and the U.S. dollar became in effect the world’s reserve currency.

If you had purchased $5,000 in gold in 1971, at about $35/oz., you would as of August 30 have an investment worth approximately $250,000 (assuming a price of $1,750/oz.). Had you purchased $5,000 worth of gold in 2005 (at about $445/oz.) your investment would be worth about $20,000 today. That sounds like an excellent return. So, is gold really our best investment strategy? The biblical account of the gold used in the Ark of the Covenant and in Solomon’s Temple reveals an important lesson.

The Ark of the Covenant and the “mercy seat” were beautiful. They were plated inside and out with pure gold. They were covered by solid gold cherubim (Exodus 25:10-11; 18-20). The ark was transported by two gold-covered poles running through gold rings (25:15; 17). Beyond that, the Temple that Solomon would build would contain a phenomenal amount of gold and would be of unsurpassed beauty!

King David alone contributed 3,000 talents of gold (about 90 metric tons, or 2,893,500 troy ounces) and 7,000 talents of silver (about 210 tons) to the Temple project. At a conservative $1,750/oz., this would be $5.064 billion in gold alone! Scripture reveals that Solomon greatly added to this wealth. The Queen of Sheba (1 Kings 10; 2 Chronicles 9) brought Solomon another 120 talents of gold (3.599 metric tons, or more than $202 million at August 2011 prices)! Solomon accumulated additional vast amounts of gold through extensive trade and mining operations (1 Kings 9:11; 14; 10:22), much of which was put into the Temple of the Lord (1 Kings 6:18, 30; 7:48-49; 2 Chronicles 3:5).

God certainly was honored by this beautiful Temple. Yet, ultimately, gold or riches will not save us, and do not impress the Creator. Remember, because of Israel’s sins, God eventually allowed the Temple to be plundered (2 Chronicles 36:18-19; 2 Kings 25). Gold can be stolen or debased. A fortune based on gold can vanish in an instant. Even a diversified portfolio can crash, and may be lost or confiscated in times of war or national collapse.

But there is a resource that can last even when gold fails. Faith can withstand war, or famine, or national collapse. Moreover, it can yield immortality in the Kingdom of God (1 Peter 1:7-9)! Scripture warns us that, at the very end of this present age, gold will be worthless, because it will not be able to deliver suffering humanity from the Great Tribulation or the Day of the Lord (Ezekiel 7:19; Zephaniah 1:18)!

Moreover, no amount of gold, silver, euros, dollars or yuan can purchase entry into the Kingdom of God. A Christian’s best investment strategy is to develop a spiritual investment portfolio rich in the fruits of the spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), humble in God’s word (Isaiah 66:1-2), and full of “spiritual oil”—the oil of deep faith through Christ living in us. This investment strategy will survive the collapse of nations, and will yield as its dividend immortality in the Kingdom of God (Matthew 25:1-12)!

For more about the wonderful future that awaits faithful Christians who keep their lamps full of spiritual oil, please read our article, “The Promises of God” or our inspiring booklet, The World Ahead: What Will It Be Like?

The price of gold will fluctuate (for more current gold quotes, check out the Financial Information link, which also has links to stocks, currencies, and other financial valuations). Many are going for gold as a type of reserve currency.  The idea of gold could be accumulated to support a new currency, while the US dollar tanks, is discussed on page 333 of my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect. And this appears to be what will happen, as well is what is we see sometimes happening now.

Of course, gold will not save humanity, only Jesus can do that, but it may be prudent for people to consider the signs of the times.
