New study: Obamacare to increase deficit $340 billion

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

COGwriter

A new study indicates that US President Obama’s healthcare bill, often called Obamacare or ObamaCare (but officially known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act), will increase, not decrease the deficit:

10 April 2012

Study: Obama’s health care law will add at least $340 billion to deficit

(AP) WASHINGTON – Reigniting a debate about the bottom line for President Barack Obama’s health care law, a leading conservative economist estimates in a study to be released Tuesday that the overhaul will add at least $340 billion to the deficit, not reduce it.

Charles Blahous, who serves as public trustee overseeing Medicare and Social Security finances, also suggested that federal accounting practices have obscured the true fiscal impact of the legislation, the fate of which is now in the hands of the Supreme Court.

Officially, the health care law is still projected to help reduce government red ink.

Barack Obama and/or his Administration have fulfilled at least ten predictions in my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect.  Increasing the deficit is one that he has already done.

Yet, if Obamacare passes the review by the Supreme Court, it will likely continue that trend.

Each time Washington has gotten involved with major healthcare legislation, it has tended to underestimate the costs.  Including, BTW, President Bush’s pharmaceutical reimbursement plan.  I do not believe that either of the two major US political parties are without blame for past programs that increase that cost more than advertised.

But the USA cannot afford to keep increasing the cost of its government without facing major consequences.  Sudden destruction is prophesied for a nation that gets so heavily in debt (Habakkuk 2), but many act like they can spend and spend and ignore the cost.  That will be a mistake.

Bees, Pesticides, and Problems

Honey Bee (Apis mellifera)

COGwriter

Human pesticides and corn syrup extracts seem to be implicated in the shortages of bees:

April 9, 2012…

Harvard University biologist Chensheng Lu found a correlation between an imidicloprid contaminated diet and one of the symptoms of colony collapse disorder.

Neonicitinoids are pesticides…Lu replicated commercial bee keeping procedures by feeding bees high-fructose corn syrup, an enzymatically-treated super-sweet sugar used to give bees an energy boost. He spiked some of the syrup with imidicloprid. Many of the bees that fed on the neonicotinoid tainted syrup left their hives in the middle of winter, a deadly mistake associated with colony collapse disorder.“I believe one reason that commercial beekeepers are experiencing the most severe colony collapse disorder is because of the link between high-fructose corn syrup and neonicotinoids,” Lu said in Wired.

But Bayer, a German chemical manufacturer that produces neonicitinoids, believes Lu used pesticide concentrations above what would be found in the field.  http://news.discovery.com/earth/controversy-swarms-around-honeybee-and-pesticide-study-120409.html

Many companies make pesticides and food extracts while insisting that they must be safe.  Yet, even if they are safe in small quantities, the cumulative affects of substances that are not found in nature (and/or not found in concentrated forms) are simply not tested well enough to be sure that they cannot cause any problem.  Human “short-cuts” may thus be hurting the bee population–and that would not be good.

Why be so concerned about bees?  Because bees are necessary for the pollenization of many plants that humans eat.  Wikipedia states:

It is estimated that one third of the human food supply depends on insect pollination, most of which is accomplished by bees, especially the domesticated European honey bee.

One third of human food possibly being dependent upon bees is a significant percentage.  Losing half the bees could be devastating.

If pesticides and/or high fructose corn syrup are starting to kill honey bees, presuming this trend continues to increase, the food supply could greatly decrease.   (Many are also concerned that the use of high fructose corn syrup, which is normally now from genetically-engineered corn, increases that risk for human health problems like diabetes, which keeps increasing in the world.)  Overall, humans need bees much more that bees physically need humans.

Jesus warned that one of the “signs” of the end of the age would be famine:

7…And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:6-8)

We seem to be in the time Jesus called “the beginning of sorrows.”

Between the widespread and growing use of genetically modified (GMO) “foods,” pesticides, herbicides, and synthesized sweeteners, countries like the USA are putting themselves at risk for the famines which are certain to come.  Losing bees perhaps should be a sign that things are beginning to worsen.

As Jesus said:

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:36-37)

US deploys 2nd aircraft carrier because of Iranian tensions, but PCG sees Iran rising

Aircraft Carriers

COGwriter

The USA indicated today that is has upped the stakes in the Persian Gulf:

9 April 2012

(CBS/AP) DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The U.S. Navy says it has deployed a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf amid rising tensions with Iran over its nuclear program.

Cmdr. Amy Derrick-Frost of the Bahrain-based 5th Fleet said on Monday that the deployment of the nuclear-powered USS Enterprise along the Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group marks only the fourth time in the past decade that the Navy has had two aircraft carriers operating at the same time in the region.  http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57411165/navy-deploys-2nd-aircraft-carrier-to-persian-gulf-uss-enterprise-joins-abraham-lincoln-strike-group/?tag=stack

Whether the USA will directly use the aircraft carriers (or its other ships in the region) or has them there mainly as a reminder to Iran that the USA would strike back hard if Iran retaliates against the USA for an Israeli attack against Iran’s nuclear program is uncertain, but likely both are reasons.  Of course, this type of deployment also signals to voters in the USA that the USA is prepared to support Israel and might be cited during this election cycle by its President Obama.

Despite what looks like is happening, however, PCG continues with its incorrect stand on the situation in Iran and the Middle East as the following from PCG indicates:

Sunni vs. Shiite?

Many analysts view the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood as an indication that a shift is under way in the Middle East that will erode Shiite Islam’s influence. Hamid explained this view, saying, “They (the Muslim Brotherhood) are part of a broader movement, and it is that movement that is going to reshape the regional architecture. The stronger the Sunni Islamists are, the worse it is for the Iran-Hezbollah axis.”

But the Trumpet has long maintained that it will be Iran (which is predominantly Shiite) that will be head of the end-time radical Islamist force known biblically as the “king of the south.”  …Iran is on the brink of nuclear power, and has the extremist ideologies that would prompt it to use that devastating power. Despite the rising power of the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt and other nations will set aside Sunni-Shia disputes and ally with Iran. (April 5, 2012 | From theTrumpet.com)

Since (irrespective of contrary claims by PCG’s Gerald Flurry) Iran is not the prophesied King of the South (Daniel 11:40), something must change to neutralize Iran or somehow reduce its Islamic militaristic influence.  PCG is in error in its assessment (about the only way that the others will ally with Iran is if Iran is sufficiently weakened that they do not consider it to be a real threat) of where the current situation will lead.

Of course, the religious leaders of Iran do not want their nuclear program messed with and probably agree with PCG’s assessment that Iran will essentially become the undisputed leader of Islam.  The political leaders of Iran do not want a regime change that would eliminate their version of an Islamic empire.  They may decide that they have no choice but to fight back hard against Israel and/or the USA believing that doing so represents their real opportunity to fulfill their view of Iran’s Islamic destiny–or even launch preemptive strikes on their own. Earlier this year, Iran’s “supreme leader” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated “In light of the realization of the divine promise by almighty God, the Zionists and the Great Satan (America) will soon be defeated” (for more details see Ayatollah Khamenei Claims America “Will Soon be Defeated”). That would suggest that he might want Iran to fight back quite hard. And while Iran could somewhat harm the USA, Iran will not defeat the USA (but it could be part of a “perfect storm” of events that could severely cripple the USA).

Tensions in the Middle East remain high and conflict may occur soon.  The situation in the Middle East will change.

Powerful restart for the Large Hadron Collider

Monday, April 9th, 2012

Supercollider

COGwriter

CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has powerfully restarted:

Large Hadron Collider restarts stronger than ever

Scientists hunting the Higgs boson have reactivated the Large Hadron Collider, waking the slumbering proton smasher from its winter slumber, and coaxing it to faster speeds than ever before. Running in 2011 at 3.5 TeV (teraelectronvolts) in each direction – for a total collision speed of 7 TeV – the new running speed is 8 TeV, ostensibly a small step up but one which the team at CERN says will have a significant impact on the potential for discovering new particles…

“2012 looks set to be a vintage year for particle physics” CERN Research Director Sergio Bertolucci said of the restart.

The LHC is a European, not American, project.  It is the largest physics project in the world.

Large physics projects tend to produce military weaponry. Now if the Large Hadron Collider does have military potential, which I have long indicated that it does, all should understand that it is likely that the Europeans and not the Americans will benefit from it:

Collider Sets Record, and Europe Takes U.S.’s Lead…

Those spinoffs now will invigorate the careers and labs of Europe, not the United States, pointed out Steven Weinberg, a physicist at the University of Texas in Austin, who won the Nobel Prize for work that will be tested in the new collider. Americans will work at CERN, but not as leaders, he said in an e-mail interview.“There is also a depressing symbolism,” he added, “in the fact that the hottest new results in fundamental physics will for decades not be coming from our country.” http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/science/10collide.html

So, whatever technologies are spun-off from this highly important science project are expected to primarily benefit the Europeans and not the Americans.

The understanding of the Living Church of God that the Europeans will be able to attack and takeover the United States and its Anglo-descended allies (cf. Isaiah 10:5-11; Daniel 11:39) is correct and will come to pass. And it still appears, to me at least, possible that the past and likely future successes of the CERN LHC may assist in the fulfillment of those prophecies.

Might Pope Benedict XVI Resign?

Pope Benedict XVI

COGwriter

The following was part of the announcements in LCG services yesterday:

Will Pope Benedict XVI Resign? The Pope will turn 85 this month. His health issues and comments he has made in the past have some expecting his resignation. In early March, two different reports appeared in Italian newspapers (Il Foglio, March 10; and Libero, March 11), “…advancing the hypothesis that Benedict XVI might resign, in part for the sake of influencing the choice of his successor.” Proponents of the idea that the Pope might resign refer to comments he made in 2010 and to comments he made before becoming pope, that, “If a pope clearly realizes that he is no longer physically, psychologically, and spiritually capable of carrying out the duties of his office, then he has the right, and in some circumstances the obligation, to resign.” Opponents of the idea cite a lack of preceden t, and also the “crisis in faith” that having an acting Pope and a “retired Pope” (both considered the “Vicar of Christ”), would create in the church (VaticanInsider.LaStampa.it, September 25, 2011; chiesa.espresso.repubblica.it, March 16, 2012). It has been said, “Leaders think in terms of years or decades, while popes think in terms of centuries.” The Vatican has long been influential in international politics and the papacy has been an important part of the enterprise. Bible prophecy reveals that a “world church” will play a major role in the formation and backing of the end-time European Beast power (see Revelation 17). Whether the current Pope resigns or not remains to be seen. However, we can rest assured that this intelligent Pope has carefully thought through the implications and impact of any decision he will make.

Possibly because of how he saw the ailing Pope John-Paul II handle his last years, the current pontiff does not feel that an overly aging pope is sufficiently effective.

There are Catholic prophecies that tell of a time that there is an aging pope who may have to flee to Germany.  If this is going to be fulfilled, it is possible that the current pope, who is German will fulfill that.  Perhaps it should be mentioned according to Catholic prophecy, only one pope is remaining and according to other Catholic prophecy, this final pope could become an antipope and be the final Antichrist.  This is discussed in my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect, where I also state that I do not believe that Pope Benedict will be the antipope, final Antichrist.

Pope Benedict XVI was in the news today:

Pope calls for end to Syria bloodshed

CNN – 8 April 2012

(CNN) — Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday called for an end to violence in Syria, as well as a renewed peace effort in the Middle East…”Particularly in Syria, may there be an end to bloodshed and an immediate commitment to the path of respect, dialogue and reconciliation, as called for by the international community, he said.

The Vatican  has long had interest in the Middle East and would seem destined to support what appears to be a prophesied European confirmed peace  deal mentioned in Daniel 9:27 (cf. Daniel 8:25, KJV).  We are likely to see more violence in the Middle East before a substantive peace deal is agreed to for a time.

Although he makes various public statements, the goal of this pope seems to be to improve ties with the Eastern Orthodox (and others where possible), but this (though it also is part of Catholic prophecy) is dangerous from a biblical perspective.  Whether or not he resigns or accomplishes this prior to the end of his pontificate remains to be seen.

2012: India and Pakistan hope to normalize relations

India

COGwriter

India and Pakistan seem to be talking peace:

India, Pakistan say they aim to normalize ties

By NIRMALA GEORGE, Associated Press – 38 minutes ago

NEW DELHI (AP) — The leaders of India and Pakistan agreed in talks Sunday that their countries should adopt a step-by-step approach to resolve their differences and build on a recent thaw in their strained relations.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and visiting Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari said the meeting — their first in nearly three years — was friendly and constructive.

“Relations between India and Pakistan should become normal. That’s our common desire,” Singh told reporters after the private talks, at which no aides were present.

“We would like to have better relations,” Zardari said.  http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jrz8DiorNJLqxrAH2750svE4OrYA?docId=fc38a5ffbaf44a63bec78d1d7d0ec08f

Peace and a reduction of hostilities is a good thing.  Jesus taught:

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God.  (Matthew 5:9)

So why might the India/Pakistan talks be of prophetic concern?

There are several.  For one, the Bible tells of a time coming when there will be a Eurasian union of the “kings of the east” (Revelation 16:12) will put together a 200,000,000 man army (Revelation 9:16).  This would likely involve India and probably also at that stage Pakistan.  So, any cooperation between those nations now could assist in them being part of the end time confederation of Revelation 9:16 and 16:12.

What might the India/Pakistan talks be of 2012 prophetic concern?

As my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect explains, many in the New Age Movement tend to feel that 2012 will mark a time of transition from a time of war to a time of peace.  And while wars and conflicts are expected in 2012, various New Age supporters will likely point to developments such as the India/Pakistan talks and other possible peace deals as proof that humankind is shifting from an age of war to an age of peace.  The Bible, however, in several places, warns against false declarations of peace (e.g. Ezekiel 13:10-16).

And while real peace will come after Jesus returns, there will be wars, false deals, and oppression until then.  While it is good that Pakistan and India are trying to resolve their differences through talking instead of wars, in this age, they will not be able to bring real and lasting peace (Isaiah 59:8; Romans 3:10-18).

But Jesus, “the Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6), ultimately will.

World events continue to align with properly understood biblical prophecy.

Catholic and Non-Catholic Scholars on Easter: Do you know what they admit?

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

COGwriter

Many people are observing Easter today. Is it an original holiday of the Church? What was it supposed to be? What does the Catholic Church teach about it?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:

1170 At the Council of Nicea in 325, all the Churches agreed that Easter, the Christian Passover, should be celebrated on the Sunday following the first full moon (14 Nisan) after the vernal equinox (Catechism of the Catholic Church. Imprimatur Potest +Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Doubleday, NY 1995, p. 332).

From this, notice that it is taught that what is now called Easter was originally observed as a change in the date of Passover. It originally was not a Christian resurrection holiday.

Easter itself is not a Christian term, and its celebration contains pagan elements. The Catholic Encyclopedia notes:

The English term, according to the Ven. Bede (De temporum ratione, I, v), relates to Estre, a Teutonic goddess of the rising light of day and spring…Easter is the principal feast of the ecclesiastical year. Leo I (Sermo xlvii in Exodum) calls it the greatest feast (festum festorum), and says that Christmas is celebrated only in preparation for Easter…The connection between the Jewish and the Christian Pasch explains the movable character of this feast. Easter has no fixed date, like Christmas, because the 15th of Nisan of the Semitic calendar was shifting from date to date on the Julian calendar. Since Christ, the true Paschal Lamb, had been slain on the very day when the Jews, in celebration of their Passover, immolated the figurative lamb, the Jewish Christians in the Orient followed the Jewish method…For this observance they claimed the authority of St. John and St. Philip.

In the rest of the empire another consideration predominated. Every Sunday of the year was a commemoration of the Resurrection of Christ, which had occurred on a Sunday. Because the Sunday after 14 Nisan was the historical day of the Resurrection, at Rome this Sunday became the Christian feast of Easter…

Men and women…In the Neumark (Germany) on Easter Day the men servants whip the maid servants with switches; on Monday the maids whip the men. They secure their release with Easter eggs. These customs are probably of pre-Christian origin (Reinsberg-Düringsfeld, Das festliche Jahr, 118)…

The Easter Rabbit The Easter Rabbit lays the eggs, for which reason they are hidden in a nest or in the garden. The rabbit is a pagan symbol and has always been an emblem of fertility (Simrock, Mythologie, 551)…

The Easter Fire The Easter Fire is lit on the top of mountains (Easter mountain, Osterberg) and must be kindled from new fire, drawn from wood by friction (nodfyr); this is a custom of pagan origin in vogue all over Europe, signifying the victory of spring over winter

(Holweck F. G. Transcribed by John Wagner and Michael T. Barrett. Easter. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume V. Copyright © 1909 by Robert Appleton Company. Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Thus, the Romans admit that the name Easter is the name of a pagan goddess, many of its practices are of pagan origin, and that the churches in Asia Minor (which they call the Orient) continued to observe Passover on the date that the Jews did, Nisan 14.

The Bible itself also condemns certain practices, now associated with Easter, such as hot Easter buns/cakes (Jeremiah 7:14), the worship towards the sun in the east (Ezekiel 8:15-18), and the worship of Astarte/Ishtar/Ashtaroth (other spellings of the word Easter).

Notice a report from the Catholic historian Eusebius:

The first Christians celebrated the death of Jesus with a Pascha meal (eucharist) on the lunar date of the Jewish Passover (note 1 Cor. 5:7-8).

At first there was no annual celebration of the resurrection. Eventually, in the gentile world, the day of resurrection was added to the Pascha festival. That day was Sunday. At the Council of Nicea (325) it was ruled that Easter Sunday would be celebrated on the Sunday immediately following that full moon which came after the vernal equinox. At the same time the Council decided that the vernal equinox would be March 21 in the Julian calendar (Eusebius, Vit. Const. 3.18). (Synder GF. Irish Jesus, Roman Jesus: the formation of early Irish Christianity. Trinity Press International, 2002, p. 183)

So, according to Catholic history (which is correct on this point) Christians did not observe a resurrection holiday, instead they kept Passover–and the lunar date was only rarely (probably about once every seven years) on a Sunday.

A writing from the Roman Catholic supporting Epiphanius may be of interest here. Epiphanius wrote:

The Quartodecimans contentiously keep Passover on the one day, once per year…They keep the Passover on whichever day the fourteenth of the month falls…Christ had to be slain on the fourteenth of the month in accordance with the law (Epiphanius. The Panarion of Epiphanius of Salamis, Books II and III (Sects 47-80), De Fide). Section IV, Verses 1,3;1,6;2,6. Translated by Frank Williams. EJ Brill, New York, 1994, pp. 23-25).

It is of interest to note that Epiphanius recognized that Jesus HAD to be slain on the 14th of the month. It is sad that he and others did not believe they needed to observe it when and how Jesus taught.

But you may be saying to yourself, so what? What does that have to do with Easter Sunday? Well in order to try to justify the Sunday observance, that noted Catholic leader claimed the following:

We observe the fourteenth day, then, but we wait until after the equinox and bring the end of our full observance to the sacred Lord’s day…we will miss no one of the observances of this life-giving <festival> of the Passover as the whole truth prescribes them (Epiphanius. The Panarion of Epiphanius of Salamis, Books II and III (Sects 47-80), De Fide). Section IV, Verses 3,4. Translated by Frank Williams. EJ Brill, New York, 1994, p. 25).

Now this should cause major concern for people who observe Easter Sunday.

First, it truly is supposed to be some type of Passover observation. Thus this holiday really is supposed to have its “Jewish” name, instead of the pagan one it now is commonly called in English and German.

Second, Epiphanius is admitting that none of the Passover observances are to be missed. So why don’t Protestants, Orthodox, and Roman Catholics wash feet? Why do they generally not take wine as part of their observances?

Thirdly, any who observe Easter Sunday are truly submitting to the authority of the Roman Church as this change of date, emphasis, and observation is due to the decisions of Roman Catholic supporting leaders–it in no way comes from the Bible. And while Catholics may see no problem with that, even they should understand that Easter is a change and not an original tradition of their church.

I perhaps should also add here that Sunday IS NOT the Lord’s day according to the Bible (an article of related interest may be Is Revelation 1:10 talking about Sunday or the Day of the Lord?).

Furthermore, contrary to the insistence of many who rely on a misunderstanding of the Bible and/or traditions of men, Jesus was not and could not have been resurrected on a Sunday. For biblical and historical proof, please read the article What Happened in the Crucifixion Week?

Notice also the following report (written by a Catholic priest and scholar):

Pope Vitalin…supported efforts of the king of Northumbria, following the Synod of Whitby (664), to establish in England the Roman, as opposed to the Celtic, date for Easter (that is the Sunday after the Jewish Passover, rather than the Passover itself) and other Roman practices as well (McBrien, Richard P. Lives of the Popes: The Pontiffs from St. Peter to Benedict XVI. Harper, San Francisco, 2005 updated ed., p. 109).

Notice that the above account acknowledges that Rome changed Passover in Britian from the biblical date (which apparently the Celts observed into the 7th century) to the Roman date.

Here is a report from a non-Catholic writer:

I wonder how many will consider that it was the Passover meal which Jesus (or Yeshua as He is called in Hebrew) celebrated in what has become known as the ‘Last Supper’? It was on this date, 14th Nisan in the Biblical calendar, that Yeshua asked His followers to remember His death, yet very few actually do this.

Rather Gentile (later non-Jewish) Christians replaced the Passover of the Lord as set in place by God with its rich symbolism of the sacrifice of the Passover lamb and God freeing His people, with the man-made institution of ‘Easter’ named after a pagan deity ‘Eostre’ (invariably appearing as ‘Ishtar,’ ‘Astarte,’ or the Old Testament ‘Ashtoreth’). ‘Easter’ emphasised the Resurrection, not Yeshua’s death…

When the women came to the tomb before dawn on Sunday they found Yeshua had already risen, making it likely that it was at the end of the Saturday Sabbath. If we count back from the end of the Saturday Sabbath (which ends at sunset) 72 hours we will arrive at Wednesday afternoon, the time which according to His own words, Yeshua would then have been crucified. Tradition states that Yeshua died on a Friday, but the word Friday is not mentioned in the Gospel accounts. (Nevin C. The real dates of the resurrection Bristol Evening Post, UK – April 5, 2012. http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/real-dates-resurrection/story-15722780-detail/story.html)

Note: The faithful Gentile Christians in Asia Minor did not change Passover to Easter, this was a change of the Greco-Roman “Orthodox” confederation and not adopted by the true Church of God.

But despite what scholars do and/or should know, most who profess Christ tend to ignore the fact that early Christians kept Passover on the 14th, but instead tend to observe a compromised Sunday holiday with elements of paganism called Easter. Catholics realize that Easter was a change from Passover and that the change included the adoption of pagan elements.

Since Easter was not the practice of the original church, should you be observing it?

TW on weather and tornadoes; increase in earthquakes in Middle America

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

COGwriter

In the latest TW News & Prophecy, LCG reported:

More severe weather.

On Tuesday, up to a dozen tornadoes ripped through the Dallas, Texas area, injuring 17 people, damaging 650 homes and another 300 structures, and throwing 7-ton tractor-trailers around like toys. At the international airport, more than 100 planes were damaged, grounding 500 flights on Wednesday. Thousands were left without power (Reuters, April 4, 2012; USA Today, April 4, 2012). 2012 has already seen about double the number of tornadoes of a typical year in this country.

Meanwhile, severe drought and subsequent famine continues in the Horn of Africa, where more than a million children are at risk of malnutrition. Hundreds of thousands have already died, and “millions of people are on the threshold of a major crisis.” OXFAM says that “drought, high food prices, severe poverty and regional conflict are causing the crisis.” Without immediate international aid to the region, the situation will become much worse (OneNewsNow.com, March 29, 2012; BBC, March 8, 2012).

Bible prophecy foretells increasingly severe weather as the end of the age approaches (Matthew 24:7; Mark 13:8; Luke 21:11; Revelation 6:3-8). God will allow these events in order to draw humanity’s attention to the fact that the way of man will NOT bring peace, safety or true happiness. For more information on weather events that will continue to make headlines, review our free booklet, Who Controls the Weather?

There also has been an increase in earthquakes in Middle America:

The Atlantic – April 6, 2012

A new United States Geological Survey study has found that middle America between Alabama and Montana is experiencing an “unprecedented” and “almost certainly manmade” increase in earthquakes of 3.0 magnitude or greater. In 2011, there were 134 events of that size. That’s six times more than were normally seen during the 20th century. While the changes in the area’s seismicity began in 2001, the trend has really accelerated since 2009, the geologists note. That happens to coincide with increased oil and gas production using new extraction techniques in some parts of the area. http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/04/middle-america-is-experiencing-a-massive-increase-in-30-earthquakes/255568/

Jesus taught:

7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:7-8).

8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

Increases in severe weather certainly are troubles, and there are earthquakes in various places. I have written that perhaps the beginning of sorrows began in 2009 (LCG: Beginning of Sorrows May Have Begun; Ecumenism Advancing). Also, in the article Can the Great Tribulation Begin in 2012, 2013, or 2014?  I wrote:

There have been earthquakes in various places (see Earthquakes Today and Bible Prophecy), limited famines, and troubles in 2011 and likely will be in 2012–so perhaps the sorrows are beginning (and possibly may have began on September 19, 2009). In Mark’s account the great “tribulation” does not start until verse 19 (essentially after the same events as Matthew’s account lists). Economic recessions and even depressions can be considered as “troubles.”

The increase of earthquakes since 2009 is consistent with that.

Bible prophecy is coming to pass.

Syria keeps killing: When will Damascus be destroyed?

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad (Source: Agência Brasil, Wikipedia)

More keep getting killed in Syria:

The Associated Press – ‎7 April 2012

By ZEINA KARAM, AP – 1 minute ago BEIRUT (AP) – Syrian government shelling and offensives against rebel-held towns killed at least 53 civilians across the country on Saturday, activists said, as the US posted online satellite images of troop deployments that cast further doubt on whether the regime intends to comply with an internationally sponsored peace plan.Syrian President Bashar Assad has accepted a cease-fire deadline brokered by international envoy Kofi Annan, which calls for his forces to pull out of towns and cities by Tuesday and for both government and rebels to lay down their arms by 6 a.m. local time Thursday.

But the escalating violence of the past few days has fueled accusations that Assad is rushing to stamp out as much of the year-old uprising against him as he can before next week’s cease-fire.

This is not new in the sense that Syria’s President seems to have done this type of thing many times before.  He hopes that he will keep being able to get away with this, but he keeps incurring major international costs.

The Arab League, European Union, the USA, and others have turned against his regime.  Several have now recognized an opposition coalition as a legitimate representative of all Syrians:

Al-Arabiya – ‎Apr 1, 2012 (Reuters) By Al Arabiya with Agencies The “Friends of Syria” on Sunday recognized the opposition Syrian National Council (SNC) as a legitimate representative of all Syrians, and “noted” it as the main opposition interlocutor with the international community – wording that fell short of full recognition of a group hampered by chronic disunity.

Money is also going to the opposition from outside of Syria which will strengthen the opposition and give it a better chance to eliminate the Assad regime.

Since that is unacceptable to Syria’s President Assad, he eventually will likely take more desperate steps.

What many seem to overlook is that there is another, not desirable, option for Syria, along with its ally Iran: a war involving Israel.

I have been writing for some time, I suspect that the current Syrian government may decide to attack Israel. If so, I have also warned that it is likely that Iran will cooperate with Syria (so may parts of Lebanon and other lands in the area). Israel in the past has indicated that it is ready should Syria attack (Israel Ready to Strike Syria). Yet, this may not turn out well for either country if this ends up in a regional war involving Israel.

Back in biblical times (cf. Isaiah 7:8) and current times, the capital of Syria has been Damascus. Notice what the Bible shows will happen to it:

1 An oracle concerning Damascus:
“See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins. 2 The cities of Aroer will be deserted and left to flocks, which will lie down, with no one to make them afraid. 3 The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim, and royal power from Damascus;the remnant of Aram will be like the glory of the Israelites,” declares the LORD Almighty. (Isaiah 17:1-3)

3 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment…5 I will also break the gate bar of Damascus,
And cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven,
And the one who holds the scepter from Beth Eden.
The people of Syria shall go captive to Kir,”
Says the Lord. (Amos 1:3, 5)

Nearly four years ago, the Living Church of God reported:

What does the future hold for Syria and its capital city Damascus?  God prophesied, “‘Against Damascus…. they have heard bad news. They are fainthearted….Damascus has grown feeble; she turns to flee…. Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day;’ says the LORD of hosts… ‘I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces…” (Jeremiah 49:23-27).  This bears watching. (Davis D, Winnail S.  Damascus Gears Up.  LCG World Ahead Weekly Update, June 5, 2008)

Damascus will be destroyed.

But when?

Syria’s President might decide his personal best option is to more closely support Iran and perhaps be involved in an invasion of Jerusalem and Israel. If so, this might be how Isaiah 17:1 is fulfilled.  And that could be soon. If we are near the time that Damascus is prophesied to be destroyed and for a time ceasing being a city (Isaiah 17:1), major problems may soon be upon that area (more than the current uprisings in Syria have been so far).  At this time, it would seem that the destruction of Damascus could happen if opponents to the Syrian Assad regime felt that they had been harmed so much that eliminating Damascus would be necessary.  Since Israel and the USA tend to be sensitive to international opinion, such prophesied destruction of Damascus suggests that somehow Syria will first inflict significant harm to one or more of its enemies and then cause a major retaliatory strike that could fulfill Isaiah 17:1.  If this is involving outsiders like Israel, it seems that the Bible suggests major complications could occur if Israel does attack Iran and/or Syria and that Iran and Syria strike back.

And FWIW, perhaps I should mention that technically, Syria is still at war with Israel as it never did sign a peace deal with Israel. So an actual war involving Syria and Israel is quite feasible. If so, Israel may hit back so hard that it might eliminate Damascus as Isaiah 17:1 says will happen.

Much is going on in the Middle East.

As Jesus said in Mark 13:37, we all should watch.

Early Christians observed the ‘Days of Unleavened Bread.’ Do you?

Unleavened Bread

COGwriter

Last night began the seven day feast of unleavened bread. Yet even many Westerners have never even heard of this biblical period. And most of those who have consider it to be a Jewish practice. But early Christians kept them.

First, notice God’s instructions in the Hebrew scriptures:

6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; seven days you must eat unleavened bread (Leviticus 23:6).

Jesus, of course, kept these days (Luke 2:42; John 4:45).

According to the Bible and the early available records, others did as well.

First, let’s start with the Apostle Paul’s writings in the Bible:

6 Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. 8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth (1 Corinthians 5:6-8).

Notice that Paul is telling Christians to keep the feast. Now while some may try to argue that he meant something else, the plain truth is that the records of history do show that Christians continued to keep this Feast of Unleavened Bread.

In addition to I Corinthians 5:7-8, we can see that the Days of Unleavened Bread were still to be kept after the crucifixion. In Acts 12:3, it says that, “Now that was during the Days of Unleavened Bread”. It does not say that these days were done away. Also, Luke wrote,

6 But we sailed away from Philippi after the Days of Unleavened Bread (Acts 20:6).

Now Philippi was (according to Smith’s Bible Dictionary) a gentile town. It was in Macedonia and was ruled by the Romans. Thus, in at least two places in the New Testament, in gentile areas, we see that the Days of Unleavened Bread were to be kept (I Corinthians 5:7; Acts 20:6). If Christians were not to keep the Days of Unleavened Bread, why didn’t Luke or Paul say so? Why did Paul say to keep them?

Early faithful Christians believed that they were supposed to keep them. And they probably understood this from the Bible and the practices of the early apostles.

An old document that was probably altered in the 4th century, titled The Life of Polycarp, specifically mentions the Passover, the Days of Unleavened Bread, and Pentecost. And it records that the Apostle Paul said that they should be kept:

In the days of unleavened bread Paul, coming down from Galatia, arrived in Asia, considering the repose among the faithful in Smyrna to be a great refreshment in Christ Jesus after his severe toil, and intending afterwards to depart to Jerusalem. So in Smyrna he went to visit Strataeas, who had been his hearer in Pamphylia, being a son of Eunice the daughter of Lois. These are they of whom he makes mention when writing to Timothy, saying; Of the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois and in thy mother Eunice; whence we find that Strataeas was a brother of Timothy. Paul then, entering his house and gathering together the faithful there, speaks to them concerning the Passover and the Pentecost, reminding them of the New Covenant of the offering of bread and the cup; how that they ought most assuredly to celebrate it during the days of unleavened bread, but to hold fast the new mystery of the Passion and Resurrection. For here the Apostle plainly teaches that we ought neither to keep it outside the season of unleavened bread, as the heretics do, especially the Phrygians…but named the days of unleavened bread, the Passover, and the Pentecost, thus ratifying the Gospel (Pionius. Life of Polycarp, Chapter 2. Translated by J. B. Lightfoot, The Apostolic Fathers, vol. 3.2, 1889, pp.488-506).

Notice that Paul is shown to have taught Gentiles to keep the biblical Holy Days. Which is also what he did in 1 Corinthians 5:6-8.

Interestingly, Polycarp himself also kept the biblical Holy Days and he even told Bishop Anicetus of Rome that Rome needed to observe Passover the same day as the Jews and not on a Sunday (this is documented in more detail in the article Polycarp of Smyrna: Heretic Fighter).

Polycarp is considered to be a saint by Catholics, Orthodox, many Protestants, and those in the Living Church of God. Yet of those groups, only the Living Church of God continues his practices as far as the Holy Days are concerned.

Notice what the Catholic writer Eusebius recorded that Polycrates of Ephesus, around 195 A.D. wrote the following to the Roman Bishop Victor who, as the previous writing showed, wanted all who professed Christ to change Passover from the 14th of Nisan to Sunday:

We observe the exact day; neither adding, nor taking away. For in Asia also great lights have fallen asleep, which shall rise again on the day of the Lord’s coming, when he shall come with glory from heaven, and shall seek out all the saints. Among these are Philip, one of the twelve apostles, who fell asleep in Hierapolis; and his two aged virgin daughters, and another daughter, who lived in the Holy Spirit and now rests at Ephesus; and, moreover, John, who was both a witness and a teacher, who reclined upon the bosom of the Lord, and, being a priest, wore the sacerdotal plate. He fell asleep at Ephesus. And Polycarp in Smyrna, who was a bishop and martyr; and Thraseas, bishop and martyr from Eumenia, who fell asleep in Smyrna. Why need I mention the bishop and martyr Sagaris who fell asleep in Laodicea, or the blessed Papirius, or Melito, the Eunuch who lived altogether in the Holy Spirit, and who lies in Sardis, awaiting the episcopate from heaven, when he shall rise from the dead? All these observed the fourteenth day of the passover according to the Gospel, deviating in no respect, but following the rule of faith. And I also, Polycrates, the least of you all, do according to the tradition of my relatives, some of whom I have closely followed. For seven of my relatives were bishops; and I am the eighth. And my relatives always observed the day when the people put away the leaven. I, therefore, brethren, who have lived sixty-five years in the Lord, and have met with the brethren throughout the world, and have gone through every Holy Scripture, am not affrighted by terrifying words. For those greater than I have said ‘ We ought to obey God rather than man’ (Eusebius. Church History, Book V, Chapter 24. Translated by Arthur Cushman McGiffert. Excerpted from Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series Two, Volume 1. Edited by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace. American Edition, 1890. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

Notice that Polycrates said that he and the other early church leaders (like the Apostles Philip and John, and their successors like Polycarp, Thraseas, Eumenia, Sagaris, Papirius, Melito) would not deviate from the Bible, and that they knew the Bible taught them to keep the Passover on the correct date, and not on a Sunday. Also notice that they always observed the day when the people put away the leaven. Polycrates also reminded the Roman bishop that true followers of Christ “obey God rather than men”.

Notice what a respected Protestant scholar reported about the second century:

The most important in this festival was the passover day, the 14th of Nisan…In it they ate unleavened bread, probably like the Jews, eight days through…there is no trace of a yearly festival of the resurrection among them…the Christians of Asia Minor appealed in favor of their passover solemnity on the 14th Nisan to John (Gieseler, Johann Karl Ludwig. A Text-book of Church History. Translated by Samuel Davidson, John Winstanley Hull, Mary A. Robinson. Harper & brothers, 1857, Original from the University of Michigan, Digitized Feb 17, 2006, p. 166).

So, like the Apostle John (the last of the original apostles to die), the early faithful Christians observed Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread.

In the late third century, Anatolius of Alexandria wrote the following:

I am aware that very many other matters were discussed by them, some of them with considerable probability, and others of them as matters of the clearest demonstration, by which they endeavour to prove that the festival of the Passover and unleavened bread ought by all means to be kept after the equinox…

But nothing was difficult to them with whom it was lawful to celebrate the Passover on any day when the fourteenth of the moon happened after the equinox. Following their example up to the present time all the bishops of Asia—as themselves also receiving the rule from an unimpeachable authority, to wit, the evangelist John, who leant on the Lord’s breast, and drank in instructions spiritual without doubt—were in the way of celebrating the Paschal feast, without question, every year, whenever the fourteenth day of the moon had come, and the lamb was sacrificed by the Jews after the equinox was past; not acquiescing, so far as regards this matter, with the authority of some…(THE PASCHAL CANON OF ANATOLIUS OF ALEXANDRIA. Chapters V,X, p. 415, 419).

This should be proof to any with “eyes to see and ears to hear” that some who professed Christ were keeping the Days of Unleavened Bread centuries after Jesus died.

Adventist researcher Daniel Liechty reported Sabbath-keepers in Transylvania in the 1500s and later kept the biblical Holy Days (such as the Feast of Trumpets called Day of Remembrance below) (and those are days his church does not observe):

The Sabbatarians viewed themselves as converted Gentiles.. They held to the biblical holidays. Passover they celebrated with unleavened bread…The first and last seventh day of Passover were full holidays…There is no mention of circumcision, so it is unlikely that they practiced circumcision (Liechty D. Sabbatarianism in the Sixteenth Century. Andrews University Press, Berrien Springs (MI), 1993, pp. 61-62).

Notice that in the 1600s, those who kept the days of unleavened bread were persecuted for their beliefs:

And finally, the tragic “Accord of Deés” or Complanatio Deesiana in July 1638 definitely disjoined Sabbatarians from Unitarians. Unitarians were ordered to worship Jesus, baptize in the name of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, and to allow their publications censured–a coerced “complanatio.” The “Judaizers” and those who rejected and cursed Jesus, however, were excluded even from the new amnesty. Sabbatarians were easy target of the new discriminatory law: they observed the Sabbath, therefore they farmed on Sundays, abstained from eating pork and blood, celebrated the Passover with unleavened bread, and refused baptism of their children–the very sign of their expected conversion” (Gellérd, Judit. Spiritual Jews of Szekler Jerusalem A Four-Centuries History of Transylvanian Szekler (Székely) Sabbatarianism. In Literature of Memory VI: Hope and Despair STH TS 870, Fall 2000 Professor Elie Wiesel. http://www.unitarius.hu/cffr/papers/sabbat.htm–12/14/02).

Note that the “Judaizers” are separate from “those who rejected and cursed Jesus”. In this region, there were both true Christians (the “Judaizers” who celebrated the Passover with unleavened bread, etc.) and those who rejected Christ as Messiah (hence the Judaizers were not actually unitarian).

So, we have both biblical and historical evidence that Christ and His true followers observed the days of unleavened bread.

Shouldn’t you?  If not, why not?

Speaking of bread, perhaps it should be mentioned that the Passover ceremony that the Catholic eucharist is supposed to be based upon involved breaking bread.  This, of course, is known to all Catholic scholars.  Article 3, under the Seven Sacraments of the Church in the Catechism of the Catholic Church discusses the eucharist. Section II asks and answers the question, What is this Sacrament Called? Several names are listed, including “The Breaking of Bread” (#1329). The Catechism of the Catholic Church also states the following:

1339 Jesus choose the time of the Passover…And he took bread, and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to them…(Catechism of the Catholic Church. Imprimatur Potest +Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Doubleday, NY 1995, p. 373)

This is important to realize as that while bread is broken during a Passover ceremony (per the Bible, cf. Mark 14:22; Luke 22:19), it is no longer broken as part of the Catholic eucharist. For details about where the round host and other eucharistic practices seem to have originated, please see Marcus, the Marcosians, & Mithraism: Developers of the Eucharist?
