Der Spiegel: Uncle Sam is Sick, UK Needs to Decide for EU

Tuesday, November 6th, 2012

COGwriter

A reader sent me the above cover of the current issue of the German magazine Der Spiegel.  I have machine translated the headline on the cover which, in English, basically says:

THE AMERICAN PATIENT

The decline of a great nation.

While Der Spiegel is a secular publication, the real cause of the decline in the USA is moral and spiritual.  And that is what has led the USA to increase its debt and decline in the world (though it remains the strongest military power).

Few seem to tie the national legalization of abortions in the U.S.A. in 1973, the increased legalizations of homosexual marriages, and the presidential decision support repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (see Obama Announces He Wants to Repeal Defense of Marriage Act and Increase Debt),  greed, QE3, etc. are all important factors in what is happening. But all of those, as well as the promotion of violence in the U.S.A., as well as other sexual and other sins, are factors behind what is happening.

The economic, debt, and moral situations in the USA are serious.   None of them can continue indefinitely and will end in ways that most Americans really do not believe is possible.

The Prophet Habakkuk mentioned that destruction will happen to someone that increased their debt at the end times:

3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry…5 Indeed, because he transgresses by wine, He is a proud man… 6 “Will not all these take up a proverb against him, And a taunting riddle against him, and say, ‘Woe to him who increases What is not his–how long? And to him who loads himself with many pledges’? 7 Will not your creditors rise up suddenly? Will they not awaken who oppress you? And you will become their booty. 8 Because you have plundered many nations, All the remnant of the people shall plunder you. Because of men’s blood And the violence of the land and the city, And of all who dwell in it. (Habakkuk 2:3,5,6-8).

The above prophecy will be fulfilled at the time of the end (cf. “The message was true, but the appointed time was long…in the latter days, for the vision refers to many days yet to come,” Daniel 10:1,14). Daniel 8:19, 11:27,29,35 use same the Hebrew term for “appointed time” as Habakkuk 2:3, while Daniel 10, using a different term, ties the latter days to the time in Daniel 8:19. Habakkuk 2 was not fulfilled in its entirety anciently.  As far as “violence of the land” as a contributing factor, this would seem to include crime, military missions, violent sports, and perhaps riots/civil unrest–are these not characteristics of the USA?

Related to some of this, Wyatt Cieselka wrote:

This world’s financial systems “trust in oppression and perversity,” and God says their iniquity will be like “a bulge in a high wall whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant” (Isaiah 30:12–13).  Because of this approach, our nations are quickly nearing the days when, “Suddenly, your debtors will rise up in anger. They will turn on you and take all you have, while you stand trembling and helpless” (Habakkuk 2:7, NLT). (Ciesielka W.  The Place of Safety: A Conditional Promise.  Living Church News, Jul-Aug 2009, p. 8 )

For those that do not believe that, despite the perversity of the Anglo-nations, the nation with the strongest military can be taken over, perhaps looking at a couple of translations of a prophecy in the Book of Daniel related to a conquering that will happen under the direction of a European leader, the final King of the North (simply called “he” in the verse below):

39 Thus he shall act against the strongest fortresses with a foreign god, which he shall acknowledge, and advance its glory; and he shall cause them to rule over many, and divide the land for gain. (Daniel 11:39)

39 He will attack the mightiest fortresses with the help of a foreign god and will greatly honor those who acknowledge him. He will make them rulers over many people and will distribute the land at a price. (Daniel 11:39, NIV)

39 Claiming this foreign god’s help, he will attack the strongest fortresses. He will honor those who submit to him, appointing them to positions of authority and dividing the land among them as their reward. (Daniel 11:39, NLT)

Does not the USA now have the strongest fortresses on earth?  Is the USA not now in decline?

The English-language version of Der Spiegel, which the same source sent me, has the following:

Commissioner Confronts London on EU Loyalty
Does Britain belong in the European Union? There are plenty both in the United Kingdom and on the Continent who have their doubts. Now, with the debate over the EU’s next budget raging, a European Commissioner has challenged London to decide. In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel is also losing her patience over the squabble…Commissioner for Financial Programming and Budget Janusz Lewandowski, Poland’s representative in the EU’s executive, said it was time for Britain to make a fundamental decision regarding its future in the European Union. “Of course there are limits,” he said in an interview with the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung. “We can’t finance more Europe with substantially less money.”When asked if he was referring to budgetary criticism coming from London, Lewandowski said: “Of course I am also referring to Great Britain. Either they see their future in the European Union in the long term or they don’t.” http://www.spiegel.de/international/europe/eu-budget-commissioner-challenges-uk-loyalty-to-europe-a-864941.html

Eventually, the UK will not be part of the EU.  Europe is getting frustrated and so is the UK.  Something will change.  The UK does not believe it can or should afford the EU and the EU wants a real commitment, that the UK does not want to provide.  The EU does not like that.

Both the USA and UK have a variety of problems (the UK also has high amounts of debt) and even though some in the world are starting to notice this, it will get worse.

Both nations are in relative decline and in certain ways, including moral ones, both are in real decline.

Germany’s Merkel Makes an Ecumenical Plea

Monday, November 5th, 2012

Angela Merkel

COGwriter

Germany’s Chancellor Merkel asked for more unity and agreement between those who profess Christianity today:

Nov 5, 2012 3:10pm EST

(Reuters) – Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Germany’s Protestant and Roman Catholic churches on Monday to stress their common beliefs at ceremonies marking the 500th anniversary of the start of the Protestant Reformation…”Especially in a very secular world, we should always stress what is common in the Christian religion,” she said.  http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/05/us-germany-reformation-merkel-idUSBRE8A41C620121105

Basically, Chancellor Merkel wants the Protestants and Catholics to make up a bit and be nice in time for the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his “95 theses” to a wall in 1517 (last week was the 495th anniversary, and I reported something that Martin Luther seemed to have forgotten, see Martin Luther: 95 Theses, But He Forgot One that Really Mattered).  And steps for this have been occurring behind the scenes and sometimes in public.

There is much greater agreement between the larger Protestant and Roman Catholic churches in Europe than many in the USA tend to think.  Even the Eastern Orthodox and the Anglicans are involved (see Patriarch Bartholomew and Archbishop Williams to Attend Vatican II Celebration).

And a time of further ecumenical compromise is coming (Revelation 13:1-8).

People need to read their Bibles and have a Christian faith based truly upon what it says, as that is a lot of why we have the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

The Similarities and Dissimilarities between Martin Luther and Herbert W. Armstrong This article clearly shows some of the doctrinal differences between in the two. US Presidential Election Tomorrow: Pray and Fast

Monday, November 5th, 2012

COGwriter

Tomorrow is the US presidential election.  If Christians are not supposed to vote, what should we do about leaders?

Pray for them!

Notice what Paul wrote:

Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior (1 Tim 2:1-3).

Notice that we are to pray for worldly leaders and those that have authority over us so that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life.

We also are to pray:

14 The will of the Lord be done (Acts 21:14).

Similarly,  Jesus taught:

7 And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:7-10).

And that, I believe, should be the type of prayer that Christians have about elections.  Followers of the true God are also told to:

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the LORD and depart from evil (Proverbs 3:5-7).

Both candidates have promoted various forms of evil, and as I wrote before Voting for the Lesser of Two Evils is Still not Good (for specific details by candidate, please see the article Romney and Obama on ‘Social Issues’).

Many people, however, apparently are not satisfied with the biblical admonitions to trust God to chose political leaders.  This is not new (1 Samuel 8:6-7).

And while I can certainly understand that people often feel that they should do more, people often forget that God inspired Jeremiah to write:

O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps (Jeremiah 10:23).

Also notice what Hosea was inspired to write:

Observe mercy and justice, And wait on your God continually (Hosea 12:6).

Some of those that vote seem to forget what God said:

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts…”(Isaiah 55:8-9).

‘This decision is by the decree of the watchers, And the sentence by the word of the holy ones, In order that the living may know That the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, Gives it to whomever He will, And sets over it the lowest of men.’ (Daniel 4:17).

It may be of interest to point out that Jesus suggested that people would take matters in their own hands thinking that they are doing God a service (John 16:2).  And while this referred to killing, the principle is still that one should not violate what God instructs and justify it by thinking that God wants one to.

Those that are physically able may also wish to fast, an action that goes along with praying (cf. Matthew 6:16-18).

No matter who wins, I believe they will lead a nation in decline and will almost certainly increase the rate of ultimate decline of the Anglo-American powers.   The USA needs true repentance and neither candidate has really called for that.  God can decide who, when, and why we should get particular leaders.

Since we are getting closer to the time of the end, I believe that tomorrow’s winner (even if it is not clear tomorrow) will help fulfill the following:

12 As for My people, children are their oppressors, And women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, And destroy the way of your paths.” (Isaiah 3:12)

16 For the leaders of this people cause them to err, And those who are led by them are destroyed (Isaiah 9:16).

But irrespective of that, Jesus did not vote while He was on this earth.  Neither will I.  I am not endorsing Barack Obama.  I am not endorsing Mitt Romney.

Those truly concerned about this election should pray (and, if safely possible, fast) for “The will of the Lord be done” (Acts 21:14).  Since the USA affects much of the world, those in other countries may wish to do so as well.

USA Drops Out of Top Ten Prosperous Nations

Monday, November 5th, 2012

“I will break the pride of your power” (Leviticus 26:19)

COGwriter

Another report shows that the USA is in decline:

The U.S. slid from the top ten most prosperous nations for the first time in a league table which ranked three Scandinavian nations the best for wealth and wellbeing.

The U.S. fell to 12th position from 10th in the Legatum Institute’s annual prosperity index amid increased doubts about the health of its economy and ability of politicians. Norway, Denmark and Sweden were declared the most prosperous in the index, published in London today.

With the presidential election just a week away, the research group said the standing of the U.S. economy has deteriorated to beneath that of 19 rivals. The report also showed that respect for the government has fallen, fewer Americans perceive working hard gets you ahead, while companies face higher startup costs and the export of high-technology products is dropping.  http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-10-30/u-s-prosperity-slides-in-index-that-ranks-norway-no-1.html

FWIW, I would say that the USA is in a worse position than the above report suggests.  Although, that last point that less Americans perceive that working hard gets people ahead (though most still do), is pointing to a real danger in the USA–a danger that has accelerated the past several years because of governmental regulations and real and proposed tax policies.

Now, on the one hand, the USA has the resources to cut its trade deficits by getting more serious about the use of coal, nuclear power, oil production, shale, natural gas etc., on the other hand, it shackles itself to barely taken advantage of that.  But if it did, it carnally-speaking, has a chance to change its position more positively (Norway, for example, owes part of its ranking because of its oil and nuclear energy supplies.)

But the reason that I feel that the USA is in worse shape than the study suggests is that because of its currency being the world’s reserve currency and its massive debts, this has masked much of the economic decline in the USA.  If the time comes that the USA has to pay in real terms, with its declining dollar, what it is really worth (as opposed to how it is currently being propped up by other nations), those who live in the USA will be shocked at how fast their standard of living will decline.

And spiritually speaking, because the Anglo-nations, based upon my understanding of biblical prophecy, will suffer first from the aspects of the Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21), which is also known as the time of Jacob’s trouble (Jeremiah 30:7).  The increase acceptance of non-biblical morality will not be able to go on indefinitely–and it is partially because of this immorality attitude by so many in the USA that it tolerates the increases of debt, QE3, and other forms of debasement to its currency.

The economic, debt, and moral situations in the USA are serious. None of them can continue indefinitely and will end in ways that most Americans really do not believe is possible.

And even though some in the world are starting to notice this, the time will come when the creditors of the USA will rise up quickly and the USA will be taken over (Habakkuk 2:6-8).

Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Announce New Pope: Tawadros II

Sunday, November 4th, 2012

Saint Mark’s Coptic Cathedral, Alexandria, Egypt

COGwriter

Egypt’s Coptic Church announced its new pope:

4 November 2012

CAIRO — Bishop Tawadros, a trained pharmacist who headed a medicine factory, was chosen Sunday as the 118th Pope to lead Egypt’s Coptic Church on the same day he celebrated his 60th birthday.

Born Wagih Sobhy Bakky Suleiman in the delta region of Mansura, the new pope will head the largest Christian minority in the Middle East under the name Tawadros II…

Noted for his knowledge of theology, he favours a more pastoral role for the church and rarely involves himself in political matters.

He will be formally consecrated Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of All Africa in the Holy See of St Mark the Apostle at a ceremony on November 18.  http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gIU84oj6IDHVbXaFufp6jK1Lnb8g?docId=CNG.576899a3b855ce2049cb5b64172fb008.831

While he may not wish to get involved in politics, members of his church have faced vastly increased persecution since Hosni Mubarak was forced out of Egypt’s presidency and the Muslim Brotherhood has increased its influence.

But instead of focusing on that, I wish to focus on the false claim that Tawadros has taken up succession in the so-called “Holy See of Mark.”

It perhaps should be mentioned that the Eastern Orthodox also have their own Patriarch (Theodoros II) supposedly also for this, hence there are allegedly two successors (and the Catholics affiliated with Rome also have someone).  But, of course, neither practice the faith of Mark, the gospel writer (who is the Saint Mark they claim to descent through).

Before going further, let me state that the whole idea that Alexandria represents the “Holy See of Mark” is abhorrent to me.  Alexandria is where many heresies originated that affected the Greco-Roman churches.  Alexandria was one of the main areas where the intellectualization and acceptance of Platonic philosophy (including excessive deference to allegory) and supposed Christianity took place and infected nominal Christendom.

The Coptic Catholic Church of Alexandria specifically claims,

The Coptic Church was founded by the martyr Mark between A.D. 40 and 60 in Alexandria (Eastern Catholics Key for Christian Unity, Says Pope. Zenit – Dec 15, 2006).

However, Eusebius does not claim that Mark was actually in Alexandria for any specific time period. Actually, since Mark is mentioned many times in the New Testament, the dates and events in the Bible that mention Mark, demonstrate that Mark could not have been the Bishop of Alexandria at that time (as he was in, or traveling to, many other places).

Around 43-44 A.D., Mark is mentioned in first Acts 12:12, when he is praying in Jerusalem. Herod is noted as dying in Acts 12:20-23, which was in 44 A.D. (Nelson Study Bible, New Kings James Version. Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, 1997, p. 1813). Sometime after Herod’s death, notice:

And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their ministry, and they also took with them John whose surname was Mark (Acts 12:25).

Notice that Mark was in Jerusalem and then went with Paul and Barnabas. Also notice what certain scholars believe:

In A.D. 46, Mark spent time with Paul and Barnabas in the Antioch Church before his accompanied them as a helper on their first missionary journey (Nelson Study Bible, New Kings James Version. Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, 1997, p. 1636).

Mark apparently went with Paul and Barnabas from around 47-49 A.D. (Nelson Study Bible, New Kings James Version. Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, 1997, p. 1813).

But Paul was not pleased with Mark and did not want him to accompany him on the next trip:

Now Barnabas was determined to take with them John called Mark. But Paul insisted that they should not take with them the one who had departed from them in Pamphylia, and had not gone with them to the work. Then the contention became so sharp that they parted from one another. And so Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus (Acts 15:37-39).

Notice that Paul considered Mark unfaithful, and notice that Mark then went to Cyprus (not Alexandria)–and this was around 50-53 A.D. (Nelson Study Bible, New Kings James Version. Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, 1997, p. 1813).

Later Paul apparently liked Mark:

Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, with Mark the cousin of Barnabas (about whom you received instructions: if he comes to you, welcome him) (Colossians 4:10).

This occurred around 60 A.D. and Mark is believed to have been with Paul in Rome then (Nelson Study Bible, New Kings James Version. Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, 1997, pp. 1637, 2008).

Later Paul declared that Mark was useful:

Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry (2 Timothy 4:11).

And this occurred around 67 A.D. (Nelson Study Bible, New Kings James Version. Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, 1997, p. 2052).

It should be noted that the Bible never mentions that Mark was ever in Alexandria, nor ever gives any indication that he somehow was a “bishop” over any area.

Instead, the biblical account contradicts the position of the Orthodox Church of Alexandria that Mark was its bishop from 42-62 A.D. as Mark was in Jerusalem, Antioch, Rome, Cyprus and other areas during this time. Plus, according to various historians, he was still alive in 67 A.D.

Therefore, either someone later made up the idea that Mark of the Bible came to Alexandria and led that church as an apostle or there was a false apostle who named himself Mark who was in Alexandria. While the Bible never calls or hints that Mark was an apostle and that Mark could not have led the church in Alexandria during the time Eusebius mentioned, it clearly does warn against “false apostles”. Specifically Paul wrote:

But what I do, I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast. 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ (2 Corinthians 11:12-13).

Interestingly, Paul wrote the above around, 56 A.D., which is during the time that there is claimed to have been an apostle named Mark in Alexandria.

Furthermore, even though Eusebius mentions “Mark”, Eusebius noted that there was a problem with those who professed Christ early in Alexandria:

1. And they say that this Mark was the first that was sent to Egypt, and that he proclaimed the Gospel which he had written, and first established churches in Alexandria.

2. And the multitude of believers, both men and women, that were collected there at the very outset, and lived lives of the most philosophical and excessive asceticism, was so great, that Philo thought it worth while to describe their pursuits, their meetings, their entertainments, and their whole manner of life.” (Eusebius. Church History, Book II, Chapter 16. Translated by Arthur Cushman McGiffert. Excerpted from Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series Two, Volume 1. Edited by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace. American Edition, 1890. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

When Nero was in the eighth year of his reign, Annianus succeeded Mark the evangelist in the administration of the parish of Alexandria (ibid, Chapter 24).

It should be noted that Eusebius’ source or conclusion regarding Anianus, that the Orthodox accept, must be in error. For example, the eighth year of Nero’s reign would be 61-62 A.D., and the Orthodox do claim that Anianus was a bishop there from 62 A.D.

However, this cannot be if he succeeded Mark.

Why?

Because according to Peter, Mark was alive when Peter wrote 1 Peter 5:13, which states:

She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you; and so does Mark my son…

According to various sources, Peter did not write 1 Peter until after the date the Orthodox claim that Anianus took over from Mark. Here is what The Catholic Encyclopedia says about when 1 Peter was written:

The most probable opinion is that which places it about the end of the year 63 or the beginning of 64 (Van Der Heeren A. Transcribed by Judy Levandoski. Epistles of Saint Peter. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume XI. Copyright © 1911 by Robert Appleton Company. Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight. Nihil Obstat, February 1, 1911. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York).

Furthermore, according to Irenaeus (c. 175 A.D.), Mark was alive after Peter died:

Peter and Paul were preaching at Rome, and laying the foundations of the Church. After their departure, Mark, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, did also hand down to us in writing what had been preached by Peter (Irenaeus. Adversus haereses, Book III, Chapter 1, Verse 1. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 1. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

While it is not certain that Peter actually preached in Rome (at least one of Irenaeus’ other claims about Peter and Rome are considered to be false according to certain Roman Catholic scholars), if Irenaeus is correct that Mark wrote after the death of Peter, then Mark could not have died before 67 A.D. And if he did die until at least then, he could not have been succeeded in death by 62 A.D.

Of course, pretty much nothing is known about Anianus or any of his “successors”–but it does not seem possible that he could have become a bishop after the time of the death of Mark (who may never have actually ever been in Alexandria), hence Eusebius’s writings about Alexandria have been discounted by many scholars.

But it does need to be understood that, in the first century, Philo reported that there were problems with those who were in Alexandria. Here is some of what Eusebius said Philo taught about the ascetic followers (who he seems to improperly allege followed Mark) in Alexandria (any bolding mine):

3. In the work to which he gave the title, On a Contemplative Life or on Suppliants, after affirming in the first place that he will add to those things which he is about to relate nothing contrary to truth or of his own invention, he says that these men were called Therapeutæ and the women that were with them Therapeutrides. He then adds the reasons for such a name, explaining it from the fact that they applied remedies and healed the souls of those who came to them, by relieving them like physicians, of evil passions, or from the fact that they served and worshiped the Deity in purity and sincerity.

4. Whether Philo himself gave them this name, employing an epithet well suited to their mode of life, or whether the first of them really called themselves so in the beginning, since the name of Christians was not yet everywhere known, we need not discuss here…

7. Philo bears witness to facts very much like those here described and then adds the following account: “Everywhere in the world is this race found. For it was fitting that both Greek and Barbarian should share in what is perfectly good. But the race particularly abounds in Egypt, in each of its so-called nomes, and especially about Alexandria

9. And then a little further on, after describing the kind of houses which they had, he speaks as follows concerning their churches, which were scattered about here and there: “In each house there is a sacred apartment which is called a sanctuary and monastery, where, quite alone, they perform the mysteries of the religious life. They bring nothing into it, neither drink nor food, nor any of the other things which contribute to the necessities of the body, but only the laws, and the inspired oracles of the prophets, and hymns and such other things as augment and make perfect their knowledge and piety.”

10. And after some other matters he says:

“The whole interval, from morning to evening, is for them a time of exercise. For they read the holy Scriptures, and explain the philosophy of their fathers in an allegorical manner, regarding the written words as symbols of hidden truth which is communicated in obscure figures.

11. They have also writings of ancient men, who were the founders of their sect, and who left many monuments of the allegorical method. These they use as models, and imitate their principles”…

15…Philo’s words are as follows:

16. “Having laid down temperance as a sort of foundation in the soul, they build upon it the other virtues. None of them may take food or drink before sunset, since they regard philosophizing as a work worthy of the light, but attention to the wants of the body as proper only in the darkness, and therefore assign the day to the former, but to the latter a small portion of the night.

17. But some, in whom a great desire for knowledge dwells, forget to take food for three days; and some are so delighted and feast so luxuriously upon wisdom, which furnishes doctrines richly and without stint, that they abstain even twice as long as this, and are accustomed, after six days, scarcely to take necessary food.” These statements of Philo we regard as referring clearly and indisputably to those of our communion.

19. For they say that there were women also with those of whom we are speaking, and that the most of them were aged virgins who had preserved their chastity…by their own choice, through zeal and a desire for wisdom

20. Then after a little he adds still more emphatically: “They expound the Sacred Scriptures figuratively by means of allegories. For the whole law seems to these men to resemble a living organism, of which the spoken words constitute the body, while the hidden sense stored up within the words constitutes the soul. This hidden meaning has first been particularly studied by this sect, which sees, revealed as in a mirror of names, the surpassing beauties of the thoughts”…

23. In addition to this Philo describes the order of dignities which exists among those who carry on the services of the church, mentioning the diaconate, and the office of bishop, which takes the precedence over all the others (Eusebius. Church History, Book II, Chapter XVII. Translated by Arthur Cushman McGiffert. Excerpted from Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series Two, Volume 1. Edited by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace. American Edition, 1890. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

So Eusebius claims that Philo (c. late 1st century) reported that those in Alexandria were ascetic, had mysteries, seem to have been gnostics (ones who claimed to have special knowledge/wisdom was essential for salvation), had some promotion of celibacy, allegorized scripture, and had a bishop–and Eusebius seems to claim that they are part of the Catholic Church (see vs. 17 above)–even though the Roman Church did not have celibacy rules at that time (please see the article Was Celibacy Required for Early Bishops or Presbyters?). This seems to have been where a major departure from the true faith occurred.

Even Irenaeus condemned the practice of allegorizing:

11…But if any one, “doting about questions,” do imagine that what the apostles have declared about God should be allegorized (Irenaeus. Adversus haereses, Book III, Chapter 12, Verse 11. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 1. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

When the Alexandrians first had a bishop who had successors is not clear–and if Anianus was such a bishop, it appears that he led a group that did not teach the Bible the same way that the apostles did. Since the Orthodox Church claims an unbroken link of bishops here, they are apparently including individuals who overly allegorized scriptures and taught other doctrines contrary to those of the apostles.

Alexandria was the original home of the heretic Valentinus (who later went to Rome), and it seems like some of the leaders in Alexandria adopted some of his traits. The historian HOJ Brown noted:

Alexandria was the home of the celebrated gnostic Valentinus. Valentinus adopted Philo’s method of allegorical interpretation…For a time, Valentinus and his followers existed with the orthodox Christians of Alexandria. (Brown HOJ. Heresies: Heresy and Orthodoxy in the History of the Church. Hendrickson Publishers, Peabody (MA), 1988, p. 86).

Valentinus, even though condemned by Polycarp of Smyrna, when Polycarp visited Rome, ca. 155, was also tolerated by, and existed in, the Roman Church until at the 170s A.D. when he was finally put out after he had greatly influenced the church there.

One man who was affiliated with Valentinus was Marcus (also can be spelled Markos in English). Notice what Irenaeus wrote:

I showed thee, my very dear friend, that the whole system devised, in many and opposite ways, by those who are of the school of Valentinus, was false and baseless. I also set forth the tenets of their predecessors, proving that they not only differed among themselves, but had long previously swerved from the truth itself. I further explained, with all diligence, the doctrine as well as practice of Marcus the magician, since he, too, belongs to these persons (Irenaeus. Adversus haereses, Book II, Preface, Verse 1. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 1. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

Eusebius claimed:

In Alexandria Marcus was appointed pastor, after Eumenes had filled the office thirteen years in all (Eusebius. Church History, Book IV, Chapter 11, Verse 6. Translated by Arthur Cushman McGiffert. Excerpted from Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series Two, Volume 1. Edited by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace. American Edition, 1890. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

One researcher noted:

Marcus, the seventh bishop listed by Eusebius, could just as well have been the famed disciple of the second-century Valentinus (Coulter Fred. The New Testament In Its Original Order, Appendix U. York Publishing, Hollister, CA, 2004, p. 859).

And that is possible. While the Eastern Orthodox venerate the memory of a Marcus they claim was bishop of Alexandria from A.D. 144-154, Roman Catholics consider that there was a leading Gnostic heretic named Marcus in the second century:

Marcus The name of three leading Gnostics…The founder of the Marcosians and elder contemporary of St. Irenæus, who, c. A.D. 175, in his refutation addresses him as one apparently still living (Adv. Haer., I, xi, 3, where the “clarus magister” is Marcus, not Epiphanes; and I, xiii, 21). Irenaeus, from whom St. Epiphanius (Haer., xxxiv) and St. Hoppolytus (Haer., VI, xxxix-lv) quote, makes Marcus, a disciple of Valentius (q.v.), with whom Marcus’s aeonology mainly agrees…Clement of Alexandria, himself infected with Gnosticism, actually uses Marcus number system though without acknowledgement (Strom, VI, xvi) (Arendzen JP. Transcribed by Joseph P. Thomas. Marcus. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume IX. Published 1910. New York: Robert Appleton Company. Nihil Obstat, October 1, 1910. Remy Lafort, Censor. Imprimatur. +John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York).

The fact that Clement of Alexandria (a contemporary of Marcus) apparently used Marcus’ numbering system, suggests that it is possible, but does not prove, that this could be the same Marcus (for more information on him, please see Marcus and the Marcosians: Developers of the Eucharist?).

Irenaeus even condemned the Gnostic Marcus who had been acquainted with Valentinus for coming up with some type of a “eucharistic -like” mystery. Notice:

1. In the first book, which immediately precedes this, exposing “knowledge falsely so called,” I showed thee, my very dear friend, that the whole system devised, in many and opposite ways, by those who are of the school of Valentinus, was false and baseless. Knight).

1. But there is another among these heretics, Marcus by name, who boasts himself as having improved upon his master…

2. Pretending to consecrate cups mixed with wine, and protracting to great length the word of invocation, he contrives to give them a purple and reddish colour, so that Charis, who is one of those that are superior to all things, should be thought to drop her own blood into that cup through means of his invocation, and that thus those who are present should be led to rejoice to taste of that cup, in order that, by so doing, the Charis, who is set forth by this magician, may also flow into them. Again, handing mixed cups to the women, he bids them consecrate these in his presence (Irenaeus. Adversus haereses, Book I, Chapter 13. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 1. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

If these two Marcus’s are the same person, it is clear that one in the list of Alexandria’s Orthodox successors was condemned by Irenaeus as a heretic (for more information on him, please see Marcus and the Marcosians: Developers of the Eucharist?).

And even if they are not, the practice of consecration with mysterious invocations was condemned in the second century–even though this is a practice somewhat adopted by the Roman and Orthodox Churches. And very similar to practices associated with Mithraism, as Tertullian noted:

By the devil, of course, to whom pertain those wiles which pervert the truth, and who, by the mystic rites of his idols, vies even with the essential portions of the sacraments of God…Mithra there, (in the kingdom of Satan,) sets his marks on the foreheads of his soldiers; celebrates also the oblation of bread, and introduces an image of a resurrection, and before a sword wreathes a crown (The Prescription against Heretics, Chapter 40. Translated by the Rev. Peter Holmes, D.D., F.R.A.S.).

In spite of claims from the Orthodox Church of Alexandria, little is known about those it claims as early leaders, but possibly they were influenced by followers of Mithra.

The Catholic Encyclopedia reports:

Demetrius is the first Alexandrian bishop of whom anything is known…Demetrius encouraged Origen when blamed for his too literal execution of an allegorical counsel of our Lord, and is said to have shown him great favour…In 230 Demetrius gave Origen a recommendation to take with him on his journey to Athens (Chapman J. Transcribed by Gary Mros. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume IV. Copyright © 1908 by Robert Appleton Company. Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight. Nihil Obstat. Remy Lafort, Censor. Imprimatur. +John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York).

Demetrius is in the list of successors for the Orthodox Church of Alexandria from 188-231. During that time, Demetrius encouraged the heretics Clement of Alexander and later Origen (before eventually renouncing Origen) with their Alexandrian Catechetical School. Thus, no one in the genuine Church of God would consider that those who claim to be his successor are truly successors of the apostles.

Even many Protestant leaders know that the old Alexandrian Catechetical School clearly had problems as the noted Protestant theologian John Walvoord has pointed out:

In the last ten years of the second century and in the third century the heretical school of theology at Alexandria, Egypt advanced the erroneous principle that the Bible should be interpreted in a nonliteral or allegorical sense.  In applying this to the Scriptures, they subverted all the major doctrines of faith…the Alexandrian school of theology is labeled by all theologians as heretical…(Walvoord, John F.  The Prophecy Handbook.  Victor Books, Wheaton (IL), 1990, pp. 9,15).

Clement mixed gnosticism with his form of Christianity:

Unlike Irenaeus who detested it, Clement refers to secret tradition, and his affinities to gnosticism seems to go beyond mere borrowing of gnostic terms. (Brown HOJ. Heresies: Heresy and Orthodoxy in the History of the Church. Hendrickson Publishers, Peabody (MA), 1988, p. 87).

The Catholic Encyclopedia reported:

Clement was an early Greek theologian and head of the catechetical school of Alexandria...Alexandria was, in addition, one of the chief seats of that peculiar mixed pagan and Christian speculation known as Gnosticism…Conservative scholars are inclined to believe that Photius has thrown the mistakes of Clement, whatever they may have been, into undue relief. Clement’s style is difficult, his works are full of borrowed excerpts, and his teaching is with difficulty reduced to a coherent body of doctrine…

In the “Miscellanies” Clement disclaims order and plan…God’s truth is to be found in revelation, another portion of it in philosophy. It is the duty of the Christian to neglect neither. Religious science, drawn from his twofold source, is even an element of perfection, the instructed Christian — “the true Gnostic” is the perfect Christian. He who has risen to this height is far from the disturbance of passion; he is united to God, and in a mysterious sense is one with Him. Such is the line of thought indicated in the work, which is full of digressions…

Some scholars see in the chief writings of Clement, the “Exhortation”, “The Tutor”, the “Miscellanies”, a great trilogy representing a graduated initiation into the Christian life — belief, discipline, knowledge — three states corresponding to the three degrees of the neo-Platonic mysteries — purification, initiation, and vision…

Photius in the “Bibliotheca” censures a list of errors drawn from his writings…when the Roman Martyrology was revised by Pope Clement VIII his name was dropped from the calendar on the advice of Cardinal Baronius. Benedict XIV maintained this decision of his predecessor on the grounds that Clement’s life was little known that he had never obtained public cultus in the Church, and that some of his doctrines were, if not erroneous, at least suspect (Havey, Francis. “Clement of Alexandria.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 4. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1908. 17 Nov. 2008 <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/04045a.htm>).

In other words, many scholars understand that Clement of Alexandria, who is often listed as a major leader in Alexandria held a lot of gnostic and other heretical views.

Origen was one of the first major scholars to oppose the literal understanding of scripture (an article of related interest may be What is the Appropriate Form of Biblical Interpretation?)–which he may have gotten from the gnostic Valentinus.

It should be noted that many historians do not believe that there was an actual succession of bishops in Alexandria prior (or much prior) to Demetrius (see Bauer W. Orthodoxy and Heresy in Early Christianity, 2nd ed. Edited by R. Krafy and G. Krodel. Sigler Press, Mifflintown, PA, 1996, pp. 44-45 and Sullivan F.A. From Apostles to Bishops: the development of the episcopacy in the early church. Newman Press, Mahwah, NJ, 2001, p. 15).

The idea that there also was NOT a succession of apostolic teachings from the apostles through any early bishops of Alexandria appears to be confirmed by the following account of Clement of Alexandria who wrote:

Now this work of mine in writing is not artfully constructed for display; but my memoranda are stored up against old age, as a remedy against forgetfulness, truly an image and outline of those vigorous and animated discourses which I was privileged to hear, and of blessed and truly remarkable men.

Of these the one, in Greece, an Ionic; the other in Magna Graecia: the first of these from Coele-Syria, the second from Egypt, and others in the East. The one was born in the land of Assyria, and the other a Hebrew in Palestine.

When I came upon the last (he was the first in power), having tracked him out concealed in Egypt, I found rest. He, the true, the Sicilian bee, gathering the spoil of the flowers of the prophetic and apostolic meadow, engendered in the souls of his hearers a deathless element of knowledge.

Well, they preserving the tradition of the blessed doctrine derived directly from the holy apostles, Peter, James, John, and Paul, the sons receiving it from the father (but few were like the fathers), came by God’s will to us also to deposit those ancestral and apostolic seeds (Clement of Alexandria. The Stromata (Book I, Chapter I. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 2. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

The above account shows that Clement claims that he basically has apostolic knowledge based on him coming upon a variety of individuals who claimed to know the apostles. Notice that Clement never even hints that this information was preserved by a line of early bishops in Alexandria.

Why?

Well, amongst other reasons, because there is no proof that there ever was no real apostle to bishop to bishop transfers in Alexandria (though there appears to have been proof of some heretical bishops). And even the Bible disagrees with the position that Mark could have been there much from 42-62 A.D.

It gets even worse. “Patriarch DIONYSIOS” (also spelled Dionysius) specifically rejected the Book of Revelation as he considered that it was likely a work of fiction. Eusebius recorded the following about Dionysius:

1. Afterward he speaks in this manner of the Apocalypse of John.

Some before us have set aside and rejected the book altogether, criticising it chapter by chapter, and pronouncing it without sense or argument, and maintaining that the title is fraudulent.

2. For they say that it is not the work of John, nor is it a revelation, because it is covered thickly and densely by a veil of obscurity. And they affirm that none of the apostles, and none of the saints, nor any one in the Church is its author, but that Cerinthus, who founded the sect which was called after him the Cerinthian, desiring reputable authority for his fiction, prefixed the name.

6. After this he examines the entire Book of Revelation, and having proved that it is impossible to understand it according to the literal sense, proceeds…

26. I do not deny that the other writer saw a revelation and received knowledge and prophecy. I perceive, however, that his dialect and language are not accurate Greek, but that he uses barbarous idioms, and, in some places, solecisms. (Eusebius, The History of the Church, Book VII, Chapter 25, verses 1,2,6,26, p p. 160,162)

How can a person who so discounted a book of the Bible be a true successor of the Apostles? Obviously, he cannot be. There never was apostolic succession in Alexandria.

Later, the Church that Demetrius led split in the year 451 into the Coptic Church and the Orthodox Church of Alexandria.

We in the genuine Church of God do not consider that either of the two leaders who now claim to lead the Alexandrian church could be truly faithful to the original teachings from the apostles. The gnostic practice of allegorizing scripture was encouraged in Alexandria, as were many parts of Gnosticism in general.

Thus, any claims to physical apostolic succession (which cannot be proven) are made irrelevant by doctrinal and other compromises as this particular church is definitely not the spiritual successor of the apostles.

Sandy, Preppers, and Signs of the Times

Sunday, November 4th, 2012

COGwriter

Problems from Hurricane Sandy are still occurring.  But not everyone suffered as much.  There are people who believe that disasters are coming to the United States.  And some of them try to be physically prepared.  Notice the following:

Maybe “Doomsday Preppers” have it right.
Hanging out with them in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, after escaping suburban New Jersey (where we are without power five days after Sandy hit), it is difficult to not respect them.
After all, while my house is freezing, theirs have generators that run on gas. Where I live, it’s a four-hour line for gas and it’s now rationed. So listening to these folks who might once have seemed extreme, makes some sort of sense.
“Doomsday Preppers” is National Geographic’s No. 1 rated show, and it returns for a second season Tuesday, Nov. 13. The show focuses on people convinced that a cataclysmic event looms, and they are preparing for it by stockpiling water, food, medicine and weapons.

Now this is a little tricky:  it is true that natural and other disasters are coming to the United States, and it is true that everyone should try to have supplies to handle disasters.  On the other hand, stockpiling weapons is not going to properly prepare people for the long run.

When destruction comes to the United States from Europe (Daniel 11:39), most will either ultimately die or be made slaves.  Of course, overall, the “mainstream” considers the idea of the destruction of the USA absurd and a fringe idea.  However, just like some are noticing that the preppers were essentially right to be prepared for natural disasters, some will notice that the warning message that the USA will be taken over by the Europeans is true–but few will repent and truly be ready for it.  Instead they will notice too late, as will likely most in the COG (cf. Zephaniah 2:1-4; Revelation 12:14-17).

The following was part of LCG announcements at services yesterday, by its Dr. D. Winnail:

Signs of the Times: When Jesus was asked by His disciples about what signs would indicate His return was near, He warned that in addition to spreading wars and violence, the world would see increasing reports of major natural disasters: famines, pestilences, earthquakes in various places, and “fearful sights” that will shock the sensibilities of modern peoples and build to a crescendo at the end of the age (see Matthew 24:3-7; Luke 21:7-11). The recent “monster storm”—Hurricane Sandy—that tore through the Caribbean and slammed into the heavily populated Eastern Seaboard of the United States fits the description of events that Jesus predicted would precede His return. The “record” fourteen-foot flood surge that inundated lower Manhattan, the devastated shorelines of New York and New Jersey and the millions left without electric power across the Northeastern United States and Canada are sobering witness to the catastrophic damage caused by just one storm. God warned that He would bring such devastating events—disaster after disaster—on His chosen people if they turned away from Him (see Leviticus 26, Deuteronomy 28, and especially Ezekiel 7). We are witnessing prophecies coming alive, and we need to be alert to the signs of the times!

Jesus noted that people simply often did not understand the “signs of the times” (Mark 16:2-3).  Sandy is a warning, and part of the signs.

Sandy shows that humans have limited power and that the environment can dramatically change. In the future, there will be worse storms coming than superstorm Sandy, and much worse disasters coming to the USA and its Anglo-descended allies.

There are still Sandy-related flooding, transportation, and other problems because of the superstorm, and many in the Caribbean also are still dealing with its aftermath–Haiti is again suffering.  So, are many in the USA:

Sun Nov 4, 2012…

(Reuters) – Victims of superstorm Sandy on the U.S. East Coast struggled against the cold early on Sunday amid fuel shortages and power outages even as officials fretted about getting voters displaced by the storm to polling stations for Tuesday’s presidential election.

Overnight, near-freezing temperatures gripped the U.S. northeast. At least two more victims were found in New Jersey, one dead of hypothermia, as the overall death toll from one of worst storms in U.S. history climbed to at least 112.  http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/04/us-storm-sandy-hurricane-idUSBRE89N16J20121104

My prayers go out to those who lost loved ones from the storm. Recovery of certain areas will take time.  But, all need to realize that bigger disasters are coming in the future.

Straight Path in Tobago
A slightly difficult uphill and narrow way in Tobago

In his latest commentary, LCG’s Davy Crockett (who is a descendant of the famous one from the 19th century) had the following:

A Quiet Life

By Davy Crockett | Saturday, November 03, 2012
Are you sometimes flummoxed by the news reports you see and read? Publicity-seekers abound and the various media syndicates are hungry for stories to help them meet their deadlines and beat the competition. They eagerly fill each 24-hour news cycle with reports of the aberrant behavior of political leaders, and the spectacular and often outrageous activities of the latest box office idols, rock stars or superstar athletes. Amid the daily hullabaloo, news of real importance is often overlooked.

In almost every setting, someone or some group will be vying for attention, sometimes to make a philosophical or political point, sometimes peacefully, sometimes in a disruptive manner.

Some individuals achieve fame for worthwhile accomplishments or contributions in business, academics, sports, or philanthropy. Serving others, however, does not usually garner the big headlines that scandal or wrongdoing seem to attract.

While many people enjoy this barrage of titillating media stories, most people’s lives are less exciting or newsworthy than those featured in the news. Henry David Thoreau, the famous author and poet of the 19th century observed that, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” His observation still seems valid today.

With this in mind, it seems that for many people there is a lack, a feeling of failure or sense of frustration if they are not receiving attention, for whatever reason, be it positive or negative. Others have unfulfilled dreams that prevent them from enjoying what they have, which blinds them from being truly thankful. Fame and fortune and the attention they bring are illusive goals.

The Bible gives a balanced perspective on this subject, which should bring peace of mind and clarity of purpose to those who strive to please God. It is a different set of values from what is being sought by the teeming masses of mankind.

The Apostle Paul put it into perspective in his letter to the Church in Thessalonica. He instructed, “But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more; that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you…” (1 Thessalonians 4:10-11).

He sounded the same theme in his instruction to Timothy about praying for those in authority in government when he wrote, “…that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior…” (1 Timothy 2:2-3).

The Apostle Peter also hammered this point home in his letter giving instruction to women. He wrote, “…the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit…is very precious in the sight of God” (1 Peter 3:3-4).

Often it seems that amidst the roar of the crowd and the clatter of popular chatter, many good ideas and solid accomplishments are overlooked and simply go unnoticed. Considering these Scriptures, it seems obvious that God does not overlook those who quietly go about obeying him and doing good.

Certainly some may distinguish themselves for great accomplishments and receive accolades, praise and publicity as a just reward for a job well done. Yet, even if they are never recognized by one’s peers or those in authority, more importantly, their conduct is noted by God. In instructing His disciples about prayer and charitable deeds, Jesus instructed them to do these things quietly, in private, “…that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly” (Matthew 6:4).

If you are interested in obtaining the reward your Heavenly Father has for you, you can quietly learn more about it in our informative, free booklet,What Is a True Christian?. or watch our Tomorrow’s World telecast, “How Can You Become a True Christian?”

Of course, the 19th century Davy Crockett was not known for leading a quiet and peaceful life but was killed in the Battle of the Alamo in 1836.

One of the reasons I posted this commentary is because during this tense USA presidential campaign many are unsure what to do about leaders.  Since the Bible never enjoins democracy, what does it say to do about leaders?

Well pray for them.  Why?  So that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life.  Notice what the Bible says:

1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.  (1 Timothy 2:1-4)

And in the age to come, Jesus will return, He will be the non-humanly elected King of Kings (Revelation 17:14), all who never received it will receive a real offer of salvation.  And later there will be peace and quiet for all:

1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”  (Revelation 21:1-4)

This truly is good news.

Daylight Savings Time Ends & Makes Sunset Earlier

COGwriter

Sunday at two a.m., the USA and some other nations changed their clocks to go back to Standard Time and off of Daylight Savings Time:

It’s that time of year again.

The “fall back” day is coming to clocks across the nation. Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 4…
Remember, you’ll “fall back” and set your clocks back one hour. Many electronic devices automatically adjust when Daylight Savings Time begins or ends.    http://ames.patch.com/articles/fall-back-daylight-saving-time-2012-ends-sunday-4b97ab65

Because of that, sunset will be over an hour earlier this Friday.

Those of us who observe the weekly Sabbath from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday may wish to remember that.  In my own case, we will have to close our office earlier than normal for the next several months on Fridays.

This will affect not only those in the Churches of God, but others who keep the seventh-day Sabbath such as observant Jews and Seventh-day Adventists.

Here is a link for Sunset Times for the U.S.A. (and international cities if longitudinal location is known).

Israel’s President Hails Palestine President’s Comments: A Prelude to an Officially Divided Jerusalem?

Jerusalem

COGwriter

Israel’s President said something positive about something said by Palestine’s President:

JERUSALEM | Sat Nov 3, 2012…

(Reuters) – Israeli President Shimon Peres hailed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as a courageous partner for peace on Saturday after the Palestinian leader made clear his support for a two-state solution to the decades old conflict with Israel.

In an interview with Israeli television broadcast this week, the Western-backed Abbas also hinted that Palestinians who, prior to the 1948 establishment of the Jewish state lived on lands that are now in Israel, do not have a right to return there, comments that sparked an outcry from his Islamist rivals.

“(Abbas’s) courageous words prove that Israel has a real partner for peace,” Peres said in a statement. “These are significant words … We must all treat them with the utmost respect.”  http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/03/us-palestinians-israel-peres-idUSBRE8A20BL20121103

If the Palestinian President is really recognizing Israel’s right-to-exist (something that is basically in opposition to its original Palestinian charter), which is what a “two-state” solution implies, this would be a possible game-changer (and this could be done without too much difficulty if the Palestinians really consider such an arrangement as a temporary step).  Both Israel and Palestine want Jerusalem as their capital (and technically it is Israel’s capital).

A divided Jerusalem seems to be consistent with the following biblical prophecy:

2 For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem;
The city shall be taken,
The houses rifled,
And the women ravished.
Half of the city shall go into captivity,
But the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city. (Zechariah 14:2, NKJV)

If half the city is Jewish and the other half not, then there would be a reason for only one half the city to go into captivity.  The Bible is clear that Jerusalem will be an issue in the end time:

2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem. 3 And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.  (Zechariah 12:2-4)

World events continue to align with Bible prophecy. An apparent peace deal will come (Daniel 9:27), though it may take a war to persuade some of the parties to make the deal, and it may involve the enforced dividing of Jerusalem.  Which is something that Israel currently will not accept–but depending on other events (including possibly the outcome of the current USA presidential election), Israel at some point will agree to some type of division (there is also a de facto division there now, so technically Israel would not necessarily have to agree to anything, but likely will).

To me, at least, the events happening in the Middle East make prophetic sense.  And we all should be watching.

As Jesus said,

35 Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming–in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster, or in the morning– 36 lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. 37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:35-37)

And the goings on in Israel and the Middle East are certainly areas that He was referring to (cf. Mark 13:14).

Prophetic events continue to line up.

PCG Keeps Uniting Egypt and Iran, But What About the Bible?

Gerald Flurry of the Philadelphia Church of God
Gerald Flurry

COGwriter

The following is from one of the websites of the improperly named Philadelphia Church of God (PCG):

During the third U.S. presidential debate, Republican challenger Mitt Romney lauded the “crippling sanctions” the Obama administration has imposed on the Iranian economy. Rather than dragging Iran back to the nuclear negotiating table, however, these sanctions that both American presidential candidates seem so proud of could end up hastening the development of an axis of terrorism between Iran and Egypt…

To combat the effect of this hyperinflation, however, Iran is not even considering compromising on its nuclear program. Instead, the Iranian minister of commerce, industry and minerals has invited his Egyptian counterpart to visit Tehran at the earliest opportunity to discuss the possibility of boosting trade between their two countries…

Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry has been writing for 20 years that Egypt will ally with Iran to form an axis of terrorism identified in the book of Daniel as the king of the south. America’s weak-willed response to the rising threat of radical Islam is only pushing Egypt and Iran into each other’s arms all the faster. For more in-depth information of this subject, read the cover story of our October/November issue of the Philadelphia Trumpet, “Egypt Unites With Iran and Fulfills a Bible Prophecy.” ▪

Egypt and Iran are not strong allies, despite any trade arrangement.  Gerald Flurry’s views on this have not been realized, despite PCG’s claims (for more details, please see PCG’s Flurry Proclaims a Prophetic Fulfillment with Egypt and Iran, But…)

Now, since PCG is proclaiming “Trumpet editor in chief Gerald Flurry has been writing for 20 years that Egypt will ally with Iran to form an axis of terrorism identified in the book of Daniel as the king of the south,” let’s look at the two passages in the Bible that seem to specifically deal with the King of the South and his allies.  We will start with the Book of Daniel:

40 “At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. 41 He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon. 42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. 43 He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. (Daniel 11:40-43)

While Egypt is mentioned above, ancient terms for Iran, like Persia or Puwt, are not mentioned.  Hence to say that Egypt and Iran will form the axis for the King of the South does not come from the only chapter in the Bible that uses the term King of the South.  Now, there is another part of scripture that also seems to be referring to this confederation, which suggests that Egypt is the axis:

1 The word of the Lord came to me again, saying, 2 “Son of man, prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God:
“Wail, ‘Woe to the day!’ 3 For the day is near, Even the day of the Lord is near; It will be a day of clouds, the time of the Gentiles. 4 The sword shall come upon Egypt, And great anguish shall be in Ethiopia, When the slain fall in Egypt, And they take away her wealth, And her foundations are broken down.
5 “Ethiopia, Libya, Lydia, all the mingled people, Chub, and the men of the lands who are allied, shall fall with them by the sword.”
6 ‘Thus says the Lord:
“Those who uphold Egypt shall fall,And the pride of her power shall come down. From Migdol to Syene Those within her shall fall by the sword,”Says the Lord God.
7 “They shall be desolate in the midst of the desolate countries, And her cities shall be in the midst of the cities that are laid waste. 8 Then they will know that I am the Lord, When I have set a fire in Egypt And all her helpers are destroyed. 9 On that day messengers shall go forth from Me in ships To make the careless Ethiopians afraid, And great anguish shall come upon them, As on the day of Egypt; For indeed it is coming!”  (Ezekiel 30:1-9)

In the above, the focus is clearly Egypt, and to a lessor degree “Ethiopia” (which is a mistranslation, as the term refers to Cushites, who are not Iranian)–but even if some Iranians may be referred to (one word above seems to come from the Hebrew word Puwt), they are simply not the leader nor would it seem as “axis.”   Furthermore, the idea that Iran is the final King of the South, as Gerald Flurry has long insisted, is simply not supported by scripture, but his own imaginations.

How could I have known so long ago that Iran would be the king of the south and clash with the Holy Roman Empire? Because of what was happening in Iran and the Middle East, coupled with Bible prophecy…

So you need to watch Libya and Ethiopia. They are about to fall under the heavy influence or control of Iran, the king of the south. (Flurry G. Libya and Ethiopia Reveal Iran’s Military Strategy. Philadelphia Trumpet, April 2011)

How could Gerald Flurry know a falsehood about Iran being the final King of the South?

Well, since Iran is mainly east of Jerusalem, it was not from geography or the Bible.   Iran might be a king of the East, but it is not the King of the South.

Time and events will prove Gerald Flurry wrong as Bible prophecy disagrees with him on many points. Including the identity of the final King of the South. The King of the South will not be Iran and Egypt and Iran are not currently strong allies (though if Iran is ever neutralized, it may decide to support Egypt as well as get Egyptian sympathy).

As far as Egypt and Iran go, there are some common economic and other interests.  But what many do not realize is that what Egypt really wants is access to Iran’s nuclear technology because Egypt wants nuclear weapons.  Notice some comments from a recent survey in Egypt:

87 percent of those surveyed agreed that Egypt, despite enormous financial problems and $8 billion in debt, should put its resources into developing nuclear weapons….65 percent of the respondents approving of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi government’s decision to resume diplomatic relations with Iran and 60 percent agreeing that re-establishing a relationship with Iran will be good for Egypt….A bare majority of Egyptians believe the country should be involved regionally and continue to be a leader in the Middle East…http://jewishvoiceny.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2265:egyptians-support-iranian-nuclear-program-want-own-nuclear-weapons&catid=106:international&Itemid=289

Almost all in Egypt want it to develop nuclear weapons and most of the population wants it to be a leader in the Middle East.  And the reality is that is what the leaders of Egypt, like Dr. Morsi its president, really wants.

Egypt basically wants to arm itself and will try to gain whatever it can from Iran, not to truly ally with Iran, but to become the major player itself.  Watch! (Mark 13:37).
