Tsunami Causes Deaths and Damages Homes on Solomon Islands

AUCKLAND, New Zealand — A powerful 8.0 magnitude earthquake caused a tsunami that sent strong waves crashing into several South Pacific islands on Wednesday, with officials in the Solomon Islands saying that at least four people died…At least 100 homes in the community of Lata were destroyed by a surge of water…

Government officials said that in addition to the four confirmed deaths in the islands, there were unconfirmed reports that some people in fishing boats were swept out to sea.  http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/07/world/asia/earthquake-tsunami-solomon-islands-south-pacific.html?_r=0

6 February 2013

A powerful earthquake off the Solomon Islands on Wednesday generated a tsunami of up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) that damaged dozens of homes and left several people missing and presumed dead in the South Pacific island chain.

Authorities canceled tsunami warnings on more distant coasts.  http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/tsunami-warning-issued-south-pacific-islands-18415084

Certainly, there are “earthquakes in various places” as Jesus foretold.  Weather problems are consistent with Jesus’ warnings about “troubles” and the “beginning of sorrows.”

Jesus taught:

7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:7-8).

8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

Increases in severe weather certainly are troubles. Back in 2009, my book, 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect mentioned the following was about to happen:

Odd weather patterns result in food shortages and natural disasters. Matthew 24:7
The world is actually in a berserk transition, as the real age of peace is not yet here. It may be a period of chaos. It is the beginning of sorrows. Matthew 24:8

A late 2011 report from the NRDC said nearly 3,000 weather records were broken in the U.S. up to the end of October, 2011 (see NRDC: All US States Had Extreme Weather; Confirms 2012 Book Prediction) while 2012 itself broke additional weather records (see 2012: The year of extreme weather).

Bible prophecy is coming to pass.

Those affected in the Solomon Islands are in my prayers.

Smoking rates higher among the mentally ill

A new study finds that cigarette smoking is higher among the mentally ill:

People with mental illness are 70 percent more likely to smoke cigarettes than people without mental illness, two federal health agencies reported Tuesday.

New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration show that one of every three adults with mental illness smokes, compared with one in five adults without mental illness.  http://www.medpagetoday.com/PrimaryCare/Smoking/37203

A joint “Vital Signs” report from the CDC and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) indicated that, among adults who reported symptoms consistent with a recognized mental illness, 36.1% were current smokers, compared with 21.4% of the rest of the population.

The report, based on data from the 2009-2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, also found that 30.9% of all cigarettes consumed in the U.S. were smoked by the mentally ill. In part, this disproportion reflects heavier smoking in the mentally ill, with an average of 331 cigarettes per month compared with 310 in the rest of the smoking population…

CDC Director Thomas Frieden, MD, MPH, who also spoke at the briefing…Asserting that “about a thousand Americans are killed every day by tobacco,” Frieden said that smoking is more dangerous to the mentally ill in most cases than their mental illnesses.  http://www.medpagetoday.com/PrimaryCare/Smoking/37203

Hard to Refuse

Smokers find it hard to quit because it’s difficult to refuse offers of cigarettes from others, and taking offers of cigarettes is one of the most frequently cited reasons for initiating smoking, according to the research, which was supported by the National Cancer Institute.

Cigarettes are given as gifts in many societies and were frequently exchanged in the U.S. from at least the 1930s before falling out of favor in the 60s.  http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-02-05/buying-double-happiness-reveals-china-s-tobacco-battle.html

Smoking is dangerous and hurts the smoker and those around the smoker.   While quitting smoking is difficult for most smokers, it seems to be more difficult for the mentally ill.

Of course, no one should smoke.

Decades before the scientific rationale about smoking risks was known, the late Hebert W. Armstrong came up with some biblical reasons that people should not smoke:

Now I had to face the question: Is smoking a SIN? I wanted the BIBLE answer, for I had learned by this time that Christ had said we must live by EVERY WORD OF GOD. The BIBLE is our Instruction Book on right living. We must find a BIBLE reason for everything we do. I knew, of course, there is no specific command, “Thou shalt not smoke.” But the absence of a detailed prohibition did not mean God’s approval. I had learned that GOD’S LAW is His WAY OF LIFE. It is a basic philosophy of life. The whole Law is summed up in the one word LOVE.

I knew that love is the opposite of lust. Lust is self-desire — pleasing the self only. Love means loving others. Its direction is not inward toward self alone, but outgoing, toward others. I knew the Bible teaches that “lust of the flesh” is the way of SIN.

So now I began to apply the principle of God’s Law. I asked myself, “WHY do I smoke?” To please others — to help others — to serve or minister to or express love toward others — or only to satisfy and gratify a desire of the flesh within my own self? The answer was instantaneously obvious. I had to be honest with it. My only reason for smoking was LUST OF THE FLESH, and lust of the flesh is, according to the BIBLE, sin! I stopped smoking immediately. (Armstrong HW. The Autobiography of Herbert W. Armstrong. 1973)

(Those interested in learning more about Herbert W. Armstrong, should read the article Who Was Herbert W. Armstrong? How is He Viewed Today?)

Notice some of what the Bible teaches:

19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

37…”‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37-40)

Consider that smoking does not glorify God in your body–it harms your body. Consider that smoking also does not show love towards one’s neighbor–it harms your neighbor. Smoking is normally a sin, though for the mentally ill it is more of a crutch. Of course, smoking is not the Unpardonable Sin and can be stopped.

Smoking is wrong and it kills people. God wants people to change/repent (Acts 17:30)–which means that, despite its difficulties it can be done (cf. 1 Corinthians 10:13).  But, if cigarettes are available, it is more difficult for the mentally ill.

North Korean propaganda film shows USA getting nuked; Japan has concerns.

Japanese Ministry of Defense (本屋)

COGwriter

North Korea has decided to continue its sabre rattling via a propaganda film:

February 5, 2013

In propaganda video, N. Korea “bombs” the U.S…

The video, interspersed with an animated space shuttle and patriotic flag waving, culminates with an all-out aerial assault on an unspecified U.S. metropolis, followed by a massive explosion.

Then we see (presumably) real footage of a Pyongyang rocket launch, punctuated by the image of a dreaming North Korean man.

The translation of the text at one point reads: “I see some black smoke somewhere in America. Perhaps the devil’s dungeon dictating to everyone is burning by the fire I created.”  http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57567675/in-propaganda-video-n-korea-bombs-the-u.s/

I have long felt that the North Korean politicians have often been playing a dangerous game with their country and their people.

While North Korea is not prophesied to take over the USA (Europe is per Daniel 11:39, etc.), it certainly is possible that it may decided to actually launch one or more missiles at the USA in the future.

In Japan, there are concerns about the next nuclear test that North Korea announced:

TOKYO — Japan’s government is indicating it is preparing for all contingencies that would result from North Korea conducting a third nuclear test.

Japan’s top government spokesman has told VOA the international community is making full preparations for another threatened North Korean nuclear test.

South Korea has warned the North it faces “grave consequences” if it goes ahead with another nuclear test.  Seoul has not explained what measures it might take, but some observers say South Korea may punish the North with some kind of military action.

In a VOA interview, Japan’s chief Cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga, was asked how Japan views the possibility of rising tensions on the Korean peninsula flaring into open conflict.

Suga said the government’s job is to always protect its people’s lives and assets, and Japan is doing its best in that regard.  He said Tokyo “will deal with the worst case scenario the Japanese people might face.”…

In maneuvers being viewed in part as a timely show of force directed at Pyongyang, the United States and South Korea are holding a three-day naval drill off the east coast of the Korean peninsula. It includes a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine and a South Korean destroyer equipped with the advanced Aegis combat system.

North Korean state media have characterized the joint exercise as preparations for a pre-emptive attack on the country.  http://www.voanews.com/content/japan-preparing-worst-case-scenario-for-north-korea-nuke-test/1597004.html

North Korea could push the USA, Japan, and/or South Korea too far and may find that it will no longer be able to sabre rattle as its has.  But it may take stronger actions by North Korea for that to happen.

Eventually, I believe that there will be major change in the approach of the government of North Korea.

Why?

Because the Koreans are Asians and occupy some of the “land of the sunrise” (Revelation 16:2).  Thus I also believe that they are to be part of the kings of the east that the Book of Revelation discusses having a role in the end time (Revelation 9:16).  So, eventually North Korea will cooperate more with various ones in Asia.

However, North Korea may take unusual actions before then, and it may regret doing so.

Obama Administration memo on killing Americans

Tuesday, February 5th, 2013

COGwriter

Some documents were leaked to the press about the rationale that the Obama Administration has used for killing Americans that it believes are affiliated with al-Qaida:

5 February 2013

The United States government can legally kill one of its citizen overseas if it determines the person is a “senior, operational leader” of al-Qaeda or an associated group, and that person poses an imminent threat to the nation, according to a U.S. Justice Department memo obtained by NBC News.

The 16-page confidential “white paper” defines “imminent threat” broadly. The order to kill need not be based on intelligence about a specific attack because actions by the organization are continuously being planned by al-Qaeda, the memo says

According to the document, “imminence must incorporate considerations of the relevant window of opportunity” as well as possible collateral damage to civilians.”…According to The Washington Post, the American Civil Liberties Union on Monday called the document a “profoundly disturbing” summary of “a stunning overreach of executive authority   http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2013/02/secret_government_memo_justifi.html

5 February 2013

Where is the outrage? For all the anger over Bush-era torture policies, where is the commensurate condemnation over President Obama’s justification for killing American citizens with no due process, no transparency, and no accountability?

An administration memo uncovered by NBC reporter Michael Isikoff strips the veil from the Obama’s oft-Orwellian justification for assassinating American citizens believed to be “senior operational leaders” of al-Qaida or an associated force–even if there is no evidence of an imminent attack against the U.S.

Strike that: Killing suspected terrorists who happen to be American “is not an assassination,” according to the president’s Justice Department. “In the Department’s view, a lethal operation conducted against a U.S. citizen whose conduct poses an imminent threat of violent attack against the United States would be a legitimate act of national self-defense that would not violate the assassination ban.”

Oh, and disregard that part about imminent threat: Although Attorney General Eric Holder told the public in March that killing Americans could be justified if government officials determine the target poses “an imminent threat of violent attack,” his memo creates a massive loophole. It coins a chilling little phrase–“broader concept of imminence”–to absolve the government of the responsibility to find a clear and present danger.

“The condition that an operational leader present an ‘imminent’ threat of violent attack against the United States does not require the United States to have clear evidence that a specific attack on U.S. persons and interests will take place in the immediate future,” the memo reads.http://www.nationaljournal.com/politics/secret-memos-expose-obama-s-double-standard-on-targeted-killings-20130205

5 February 2013

The detailed circumstances in which a US government may order the killing of an American citizen who is a high-ranking member of al-Qaida have been revealed in a leaked memo prepared by Obama administration lawyers.

The document, acquired by NBC and dating from 2011, lays out for the first time the precise rationale for carrying out targeted killings of senior al-Qaida members who are US citizens, and who are believed to pose an “imminent threat of violent attack” against the United States

Although the paper does not specify the “minimum legal requirements” for launching such an operation, it insists that the killing would be constitutionally justified as the United States is engaged in an “armed conflict”, as defined by international law and authorised by Congress, with al-Qaida and its affiliates.

In a key passage in the document – which is unsigned – it argues that for a US citizen who has rights under the due process clause and the fourth amendment, “that individual’s citizenship would not immunize from a lethal operation”.

The paper concludes: “Where certain circumstances are met, a lethal operation against a US citizen who is a senior operational leader of al-Qaida … and who himself poses an imminent threat of violent attack against the United States, would not violate the constitution.”  http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/feb/05/obama-administration-us-al-qaida

Because of sin, the Bible warns of terrors affecting the descendants of Israel:

14 ‘But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments,
15 and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant,
16 I also will do this to you:
I will even appoint terror over you  (Leviticus 26:14-16)

Those in the USA who feel that they are protected by a variety of ‘constitutional’ rights are learning that their government is narrowing those rights.  Today it is high-level membership in al-Qaida or similar organizations, tomorrow it could be other unrelated groups and perhaps some who are not as high-level.

Either way, the citizens of the USA do not have all the rights that their government used to claim that they had.

China’s smog choking Japan

Tuesday, February 5th, 2013

COGwriter

China is exporting a large amount of polluted air to Japan:

February 5, 2013

Smog from China is now drifting over parts of Japan, triggering health warnings for the young and sick.

Japanese media has been saturated with coverage of the thick, choking smog blanketing Beijing and other Chinese cities in recent days.

News programs have also broadcast maps showing the pollution being pushed west by the winds towards southern Japan.  http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-02-05/chinese-smog-chokes-japan/4500760

Pictures of Beijing and other Chinese cities shrouded in thick, choking smog have been playing out on Japanese TV screens since last week.

News programs have broadcasted maps showing a swirl of pollution gathering strength across China and spreading over the ocean toward Japan…

Air pollution over west Japan has exceeded government limits over the past few days, with tiny particulate matter posing a significant problem, said Atsushi Shimizu of the National Institute for Environmental Studies.

The prevailing winds from the west carry over such particles from mainland Asia, he said. Most of the concern is focusing on the concentration of particles 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter. The concentration has been as high as 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air recently in northern Kyushu.

The government limit is 35 micrograms.

Yellow sand from the deserts of Mongolia and China is known to be a source of these particles, as well as automobile and factory fumes. http://www.japantimes.co.jp/life/2013/02/05/environment/chinas-thick-smog-settling-over-japan/#.URBEXPKLLxo

I read a story a year or two ago that if China did not take steps to clean up its air, those of us on the West Coast of California would have unhealthful air from China (and that was even presuming no local air pollution in California).  So, it is of little surprise that Japan, which is much, much closer to China geographically is being affected.

One would think that since Chinese officials have to breath the bad air themselves, that they would take more steps to improve the air quality.  Perhaps because of problems that China has had with pollution (Record air pollution in Beijing: Jesus ultimately will fix these types of problems), and perhaps some international complaints, the Chinese will get a bit more serious about cleaning up their air.

It is partially because of pollution, economic policies, other problems, its serious potential for significant social unrest, and how it is discussed in biblical prophecy, that despite its economic gains, the 21st century will not belong to China. China will not become number 1, but later in this century, neither will the USA.

The following passage which involves the second coming of Jesus, and comes from the book also known as the Apocalypse, has an interesting statement:

8 The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come, And the time of the dead, that they should be judged, And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints, And those who fear Your name, small and  great, And should destroy those who destroy the earth. (Revelation 11:18)

Are not massive air, water, and other pollution problems part of how humankind is destroying the earth? In a sense, pollution will be a factor in the Apocalypse as the above passage shows.

Jesus will need to return to save humanity from destroying itself (Matthew 24:22).

Many sadly promoting ‘gay’ scouts

The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah

COGwriter

More are trying to pressure the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to accept homosexuality:

4 February 2013

IRVING, Texas Scouts and their families have delivered a petition to the Boy Scouts of America headquarters urging an end to a policy banning gay scouts and leaders from the organization.

They say the petition delivered Monday in Irving, Texas, includes 1.4 million signatures. Scouting leaders are expected to consider ending the ban during a three-day meeting this week.

Jennifer Tyrrell…She says the policy is “archaic” and needs to change.  http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57567529/boy-scout-families-deliver-petition-urging-end-to-policy-banning-gays/

February 4, 2013

In his pre-Super Bowl interview Sunday, President Obama praised both the Boy Scouts of America and a proposal to end its ban on gays.

“My attitude is that gays and lesbians should have access and opportunity the same way everybody else does, in every institution and walk of life,” Obama told Scott Pelley of CBS News.

Obama said, “The Scouts are a great institution that are promoting young people and exposing them to opportunities and leadership that will serve people for the rest of their lives. And I think nobody should be barred from that.”  http://www.usatoday.com/story/theoval/2013/02/04/obama-boy-scouts-gays/1890065/

Barack Obama’s position is not a recent change  (see Romney and Obama Agree on Having ‘Gay’ Boy Scouts)–but that still does not make it right.

Unmarried teens should not be engaging in sex of any kind and Boy Scouts are supposed to be “morally straight” as that is part of the Boy Scout oath. If the BSA does does compromise here, this would be another indication that less and less in the USA understand biblical morality or the consequences of immorality.

As far as the anti-homosexual position being ‘archiac’ as one homosexual activist claimed, that is certainly not the Bible’s take on this.

Notice why God allowed Sodom and Gomorrah to be destroyed:

7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. (Jude 7)

6…the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly (2 Peter 2:6)

God had the example recorded in the Bible so that people would realize that promoting homosexuality is not appropriate and is dangerous.  Notice something else from the Bible:

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man — and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.  (Romans 1:18-32)

Hopefully, the leaders in the BSA will believe more in biblical morality and not succumb to the pressures to approve immoral practices.

Keeping the Ten Commandments reflects love. Breaking them and/or condoning those that do is evil. This should be clear to those who believe the God of the Bible. Thus, the BSA should not consider allowing the homosexuals in.

But many in the USA and other Anglo-dominated lands seem inclined to truly listen to those who are strongly advocating wrong changes in the moral direction of the land.  National repentance is the only real long-term hope for the Anglo-peoples (and it seems to be too late for that).

Iran and Syria warn Israel

Monday, February 4th, 2013

Jerusalem

COGwriter

Both Iran and Syria are warning that action may be taken against Israel for its recent incursion into Syria:

4 February 2013

(DAMASCUS, Syria) — A top Iranian official visiting Damascus on Monday said Israel will regret its “latest aggression” on Syria and said the entire Muslim world should be ready to defend the Syrian people.

Saeed Jalili, the head of Iran’s National Security Council…“Just as it regretted its aggressions after the 33-day, 22-day and eight-day wars, today the Zionist entity will regret the aggression it launched against Syria,” Jalili said, referring to past wars between Israel and the Lebanese militant Hezbollah and Palestinian Hamas groups…

“The Islamic world will not allow aggression against Syria,” Jalili said. “Syria stands on the front line of the Islamic world against the Zionist regime … The Islamic world must show due reaction to the Israeli aggression.” http://world.time.com/2013/02/03/israel-suggests-responsibility-for-syria-airstrike/#ixzz2JwWzxjjT

A top Iranian official says Israel will regret its latest “aggression” against Syria.

The head of Iran’s National Security Council, Saeed Jalili, said Monday in a visit to Damascus that the Muslim world supports Syria…

The Syrian government has said Israeli jets targeted the Jamraya military research facility outside Damascus.

In his first reported response to the attack, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad accused Israel Sunday of seeking to destabilize Syria and said his military forces could confront “any aggression” against it.

Syrian ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul-Karin Ali has said Damascus has the “option” of carrying out a “surprise” response to the alleged Israeli attack. He did not elaborate his remarks to Lebanese website Al-Ahad.  http://www.voanews.com/content/iran-israel-will-regret-aggression-against-syria/1596563.html

Iran has long tried to get the rest of the Islamic world to support it with its military/religious objectives to take over Jerusalem from Israel.  While some in Israel are concerned, some others have suggested an overconfidence that they may later regret (see Israeli confidence may be misplaced).

As far as Iran and Israel, notice something from my book, Barack Obama, Prophecy, and the Destruction of the United States-Second Edition for Second Obama Term:

Iran, Islamic Prophecy, and 2013-2016

Because Bible prophecy indicates that it will be primarily Arabic nations that support the final King of the South (Daniel 11:40-43; Ezekiel 30:1-8), though with some (probably temporary per Daniel 11:25-26) support from Turkey, it is not biblically likely that Iran can truly be the leader of the Islamic world as it seems to want to be.  Iran will be effectively neutralized, as I have long written, perhaps from an attack involving Israel and/or internal civil unrest (this could include electromagnetic [EMP] or similar weapons used against Iran.  Note: The U.S.A. itself is vulnerable to EMP type attacks and they and/or items such as biological weapons, chemical weapons, terrorism, nuclear weapons, dirty bombs, etc. could affect the U.S.A. because of a conflict involving Iran, Syria, and/or others).

Various prophecies of the Mahdi indicate that he would return in an even numbered year, like the one beginning with the end of 2012, since the Islamic calendar runs differently than the Roman calendar.  Islamic year 1434 runs from November 15, 2012 to November 3, 2013.  Islamic year 1436 runs from October 25, 2014 through October 14, 2015; while Islamic year 1438 runs from October 2, 2016 through September 21, 2017 (which would be other periods that the Mahdi allegedly can rise up).

Apparently in March 2011, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad approved a video that quotes someone as saying this Imam Mahdi leader arrives after a time of great earthquakes and sedition.  It says that, according to the Hadith, Iran is to be among the “preparers” for the arrival of the Imam.  It blames the U.S.A. and its allies for causing Islamic fear-mongering since 9/11/2001.  The video indicates that Islamic writings have warned that westerners would invade the Middle East first; it suggests that Iraq and other western military interventions are proof that the Imam Mahdi is about to appear.  It tells that a time of Arab/Islamic cooperation is prophesied, while also claiming that annihilation of the “Zionist regime” needs to happen prior to the arrival of the Mahdi.

And the video goes further.  It says that the Hadith tells of a leader named Abdullah, states that the ill King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia is the first Abdullah leader in a hundred years, and then it cites something that states when Abdullah dies the reappearance is guaranteed.  It claims that Iran is the most powerful force in the Middle East.  It claims that their prophecies state that a Seyed Khorasani will turn Jerusalem over to the Imam Mahdi.  It discusses prophesies that Islamic antichrists must rise up and hints that the Free Masons, with their influence on American, European, Israeli, and apparently certain Arabic leaders, has fulfilled this.  The video shows a picture of Hosni Mubarak along with a prophecy that the leader of Egypt must die prior to the arrival of the Imam Mahdi.  (However, even though Hosni Mubarak is no longer the leader of Egypt, he still was alive but ill in early 2013.  So might some in Iran decide they need to do something soon?)

It also essentially tries to explain who is Seyed Khorasani (the current top leader of Iran).  It also says that 72 months prior to the arrival of the Imam Mahdi that Seyed Khorasani will appoint Shoeib to assist.  It then asks if “Doctor” Ahmadinejad could be the Shoeib.  It shows Ahmadinejad making various speeches and discusses him taking over Jerusalem in the future–and prior to the arrival of the Imam Mahdi.  It basically ends with stating that the Imam Mahdi will rise up soon and that all should praise God with Jihad.

In earlier speeches, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has suggested that the Imam Mahdi would rise up prior to him leaving his office, as preparing the way for him is supposedly his mission.  (Thiel B. Barack Obama, Prophecy, and the Destruction of the United States-Second Edition for Second Obama Term. Nazarene Books, 2013, pp. 22-24)

As regular readers of the COGwriter news page are aware, I have been warning for some time that a regional war involving Iran, Israel, the USA, and/or Syria seems likely.  And Iran keeps taking steps which may help it get ready for such a war.

Since Iran, however, is NOT really south of Jerusalem (though it may support such a king per certain interpretations of the peoples listed in Ezekiel 30:1-9), it will not be the final King of the South of Bible prophecy (cf. Daniel 11:40-43). Because of that, I have tended to believe that Iran may somehow get “neutralized” before this final king rises up.

My reading and re-reading of Bible prophecy simply does not show that Iran will be a major player in Daniel 11:21-44 nor the deal of Psalm 83:4-8 (Arabs, Turks, and Europeans are); though Ezekiel 30:1-9 possibly implicates Iran as a supporter of an end-time confederation involving Egypt.

“Neutralizing” Iran would allow most of the other Islamic states (like Saudi Arabia and Egypt) to continue to exist (Syria might not do well per Isaiah 17:1) and allow for the rising of the prophesied King of the South to rise up (revolution in Iran, is also another possibility, for its “neutralization”).

Syria, itself, is in a tough spot.  It is having trouble with the opposition military which is strengthening and attempting to over throw its government.  It is increasingly becoming isolated internationally.  It is also facing criticism because it has not responded militarily to Israel’s attacks last week (see New fighting in Syria and ramifications for Israel).

It may well decide that it needs to engage Israel in some type of battle or war and this may not turn out well for either of those countries.

Iran and/or Syria could severely damage Israel, and since Israel knows that, it may decide it has to hit Iran and/or Syria quite hard if attacked.  Of course, the Bible shows that Syria’s capital city Damascus (Isaiah 7:8) will be destroyed (Isaiah 17:1).  And this could be a factor that ultimately leads to the fulfillment of Daniel 9:27 (which seems to be a peace deal) as well as the rise of the final King of the South of biblical prophecy (Daniel 11:40-43).

The end is not here, yet (Matthew 24:6), but is getting closer.

Valentine’s Day and love

Monday, February 4th, 2013

COGwriter

Valentine’s Day is observed by many in February.  Currently we are starting to see store displays and tv & print ads for it.

Last year, the improperly named Christianity Today (CT) sometimes seemed to try to justify its position on the holiday by talking about love, as this is what its Valentine’s page began with last year:

February 14

1 John 4:7
Let us love one another, for love comes from God. (NIV)

The implication of the above was that the Apostle John somehow supports Valentine’s Day. The misuse of this scripture here is appalling.

But what is the love of God?

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. (1 John 5:2-4)

Valentine’s Day has more to do with lust than love–Valentine’s Day is not from the Father but from the world. Notice what the Apostle John wrote a couple of chapters earlier in the same book:

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever. (1 John 2:15-17, NKJV)

Valentine’s Day is a worldly holiday, essentially built upon lust of the eyes and the pride of life. It will pass away, it is not a true Christian holiday.

An article on Valentine’s Day from CT stated:

So why do people send “valentines” or “love-tokens” to one another on that day? The origin of that tradition is not thought to have any connection with the saint’s day. Rather it comes from an early European belief that the second week of February was when birds began to mate. The idea suggests that lovers should probably exchange notes and gifts on February 14 in conjunction with what nature practiced. It then concludes with “Nowadays, Valentine’s Day is observed as a special day for love and romance. This topic is one of the oldest, and probably most-discussed, issues in history! As Christians, we know that love originates from God and that God is love (1 John 4:16).

Love comes from God, but paganism is a lie, and lies originated from the devil (cf. John 8:44). Compromise with pagan traditions for membership and/or economic factors is essentially one of the major areas that separates those truly in Christ’s Church from those who think that they are part of it. Furthermore, those in Christ’s Church try to live their lives in accordance with the law of God as Jesus and the original apostles did. Days that were compromises with paganism were not endorsed by Jesus or His early followers.

The same Apostle John who wrote that Christians were not supposed to be worldly but were to keep God’s commandment was not at the same time telling them to ignore the Bible and adopt pagan-compromised practices. But CT seems to want people to think otherwise.

And just because people use the name of Christ and call themselves Christian does not mean that they are faithful.

Notice what Jesus taught:

21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ (Matthew 7:21-23)

John did not observe Valentine’s Day or anything close to it.

Valentine’s Day is not a biblical holiday.

The modern practice of giving cards to ask/tell someone to “be my Valentine” seems to be a holdover from the ancient sexual lottery.

Christians who may be tempted to compromise need to ask themselves if the origins of Valentine’s Day are biblical or pagan.

None who profess Christ should observe this February “holiday”–it simply is not a Christian holiday. It began as a sexual lottery and still has sexual ramifications, even in the 21st century.  That is not what love really is all about.

Reading the Bible literally?

Sunday, February 3rd, 2013

COGwriter

Many people feel that the Bible should interpret itself. At theological schools they teach that there are various forms of biblical interpretation. Theological schools (and their graduates) tend emphasize one or more styles of what they call biblical exegesis–some of them, such as an excessive emphasis on allegorization, which are vain and overlook what the Bible teaches.

Today, I ran across a Catholic writer who espoused an odd form of “literal” reading of scripture.  The writer is Mark Shea and he wrote:

Periodically, folks ask about whether we are supposed to read the Bible literally.

The Church does require a literal interpretation of biblical texts.  But that does not mean what most Americans imagine it means.  It does not mean we have to believe, for instance, that the universe was made in six 24 hour days, or profess faith in talking snakes.  Rather, by the “literal sense”, the Church means we must read the text looking for what the author intended to say, the *way* he intended to say it, and distinguish from that what is incidental to what he was saying.  That’s the literal interpretation…the Church also says we are not at all bound to read it *literalistically* as though it was always a newspaper account.  So, for instance, CCC 390 says:

The account of the fall in Genesis 3 uses figurative language, but affirms a primeval event, a deed that took place at the beginning of the history of man. Revelation gives us the certainty of faith that the whole of human history is marked by the original fault freely committed by our first parents.

Note that: Genesis describes a real primeval event (the fall) but it uses figurative, not newspaper, language to do it.  Other times, of course, Scripture does uses something like newspaper language (“David hid from Saul in a cave.”) in order to tell the story.  Common sense and the interpretive tradition of the Church help us discern what from what.

Likewise, the Church does not commit us to reading the account of Noah literalistically…

For a quick rundown on on the senses of Scripture, see CCC 115-119:

115 According to an ancient tradition, one can distinguish between two senses of Scripture: the literal and the spiritual, the latter being subdivided into the allegorical, moral and anagogical senses. The profound concordance of the four senses guarantees all its richness to the living reading of Scripture in the Church.

116 The literal sense is the meaning conveyed by the words of Scripture and discovered by exegesis, following the rules of sound interpretation: “All other senses of Sacred Scripture are based on the literal.”83

117 The spiritual sense. Thanks to the unity of God’s plan, not only the text of Scripture but also the realities and events about which it speaks can be signs.

1. The allegorical sense. We can acquire a more profound understanding of events by recognizing their significance in Christ; thus the crossing of the Red Sea is a sign or type of Christ’s victory and also of Christian Baptism.84

But I would not believe in the Gospel, had not the authority of the Catholic Church already moved me.
http://www.ncregister.com/blog/mark-shea/the-senses-of-scripture#ixzz2JqpQGS52

(Note: ‘CCC’ means the Catechism of the Catholic Church.)  Mark Shea is not really advocating reading the Bible literally.  Actually, when I personally started to read the Gospels, I realized that the Church of Rome was too removed from the Bible to truly represent the true church (they have made many changes that the true Church of God has not, for details, please check out Which Is Faithful: The Roman Catholic Church or the Continuing Church of God?).

And let me add that although Mark Shea teaches that his “Church does not commit us to reading the account of Noah literalistically,” Jesus of the Bible did teach the account of Noah as did the apostles.  Here are some of the words of Jesus:

37 But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.  38 For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,  39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.  (Matthew 24:37-39)

26 And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man:  27 They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.  (Luke 17:26-27)

Notice some additional writings from the New Testament about Noah:

7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.  (Hebrews 11:7)

18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit, 19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20 who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.  (1 Peter 3:18-20)

4 For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; 5 and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; (2 Peter 2:4-5)

Those of us who actually believe the Bible believe the account of Noah–and the New Testament confirmed many of the literal events of the account of Noah in the Book of Genesis.  Those part of the Church of Rome claim they accept the Apostle Peter’s authority, so perhaps they should believe the biblical account of Noah?

The Bible Supports the View that It Tends to Literally Interpret Itself

Notice what the prophet Isaiah taught:

Whom will he teach knowledge? And whom will he make to understand the message?…For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little”… But the word of the LORD was to them, “Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little,” (Isaiah 28:9,10, 13 NKJV).

In other words, the Bible was supposed to be understood based upon what it says in many places.

Notice what the Apostle Paul wrote:

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NKJV).

In other words, scripture is given by God for doctrine and contains enough information that the man of God may be complete.

Notice what the Apostle Peter taught:

15…also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures (2 Peter 3:15-16).

Thus, even back then people who would not learn from the apostles were twisting scriptures–claiming they meant something other than what they said.

Allegorizing May Have First Developed in Alexandria And Was Held By Followers of Simon Magus and Valentinus

Gnostic and pre-gnostic leaders took a different approach to biblical interpretation in the first and second centuries. They tended to accept allegory over what the Bible actually taught.

This practice may have first developed in Alexandria, Egypt. Here is some of what Eusebius said Philo (c. first century) taught about those who made some profession of Christ in Alexandria (any bolding mine):

3. In the work to which he gave the title, On a Contemplative Life or on Suppliants, after affirming in the first place that he will add to those things which he is about to relate nothing contrary to truth or of his own invention, he says that these men were called Therapeutæ and the women that were with them Therapeutrides. He then adds the reasons for such a name, explaining it from the fact that they applied remedies and healed the souls of those who came to them, by relieving them like physicians, of evil passions, or from the fact that they served and worshiped the Deity in purity and sincerity.

4. Whether Philo himself gave them this name, employing an epithet well suited to their mode of life, or whether the first of them really called themselves so in the beginning, since the name of Christians was not yet everywhere known, we need not discuss here…

7. Philo bears witness to facts very much like those here described and then adds the following account: “Everywhere in the world is this race found. For it was fitting that both Greek and Barbarian should share in what is perfectly good. But the race particularly abounds in Egypt, in each of its so-called nomes, and especially about Alexandria

9. And then a little further on, after describing the kind of houses which they had, he speaks as follows concerning their churches, which were scattered about here and there: “In each house there is a sacred apartment which is called a sanctuary and monastery, where, quite alone, they perform the mysteries of the religious life. They bring nothing into it, neither drink nor food, nor any of the other things which contribute to the necessities of the body, but only the laws, and the inspired oracles of the prophets, and hymns and such other things as augment and make perfect their knowledge and piety.”

10. And after some other matters he says:

“The whole interval, from morning to evening, is for them a time of exercise. For they read the holy Scriptures, and explain the philosophy of their fathers in an allegorical manner, regarding the written words as symbols of hidden truth which is communicated in obscure figures.

11. They have also writings of ancient men, who were the founders of their sect, and who left many monuments of the allegorical method. These they use as models, and imitate their principles”…

15…Philo’s words are as follows:

16. “Having laid down temperance as a sort of foundation in the soul, they build upon it the other virtues. None of them may take food or drink before sunset, since they regard philosophizing as a work worthy of the light, but attention to the wants of the body as proper only in the darkness, and therefore assign the day to the former, but to the latter a small portion of the night.

17. But some, in whom a great desire for knowledge dwells, forget to take food for three days; and some are so delighted and feast so luxuriously upon wisdom, which furnishes doctrines richly and without stint, that they abstain even twice as long as this, and are accustomed, after six days, scarcely to take necessary food.” These statements of Philo we regard as referring clearly and indisputably to those of our communion.

19. For they say that there were women also with those of whom we are speaking, and that the most of them were aged virgins who had preserved their chastity…by their own choice, through zeal and a desire for wisdom

20. Then after a little he adds still more emphatically: “They expound the Sacred Scriptures figuratively by means of allegories. For the whole law seems to these men to resemble a living organism, of which the spoken words constitute the body, while the hidden sense stored up within the words constitutes the soul. This hidden meaning has first been particularly studied by this sect, which sees, revealed as in a mirror of names, the surpassing beauties of the thoughts”…

23. In addition to this Philo describes the order of dignities which exists among those who carry on the services of the church, mentioning the diaconate, and the office of bishop, which takes the precedence over all the others (Eusebius. Church History, Book II, Chapter XVII. Translated by Arthur Cushman McGiffert. Excerpted from Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series Two, Volume 1. Edited by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace. American Edition, 1890. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

So Eusebius claims that Philo (c. 1st century) reported that those in Alexandria were ascetic, had mysteries, seem to have been gnostics (ones who claimed to have special knowledge/wisdom was essential for salvation), had some promotion of celibacy, allegorized scripture, and had a bishop–and Eusebius seems to claim that they are part of the Catholic Church (see vs. 17 above)–even though the Roman Church did not have celibacy rules at that time (please see the article Was Celibacy Required for Early Bishops or Presbyters?). This seems to have been where a major departure from the true faith occurred.

Hippolytus, who also appeared to be a Roman supporter, in the early third century, wrote this about the heretic Simon Magus:

Now Simon, both foolishly and knavishly paraphrasing the law of Moses, makes his statements (Hippolytus. Refutation of All Heresies, Book VI, Chapter IV. Translated by J. H. Machmahon. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 5. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1886. Online Edition Copyright © 2005 by K. Knight).

Simon then, after inventing these (tenets), not only by evil devices interpreted the writings of Moses in whatever way he wished, but even the (works) of the poets. For also he fastens an allegorical meaning on (the story of) the wooden horse and Helen with the torch, and on very many other (accounts), which he transfers to what relates to himself and to Intelligence, and (thus) furnishes a fictitious explanation of them. (ibid Chapter XIV).

Simon Magus came on the scene about the same time Philo wrote about the Alexandrians.

Alexandria was also the original home of the heretic Valentinus (who later went to Rome), and it seems like some of the leaders in Alexandria adopted some of his traits. The historian HOJ Brown noted:

Alexandria was the home of the celebrated gnostic Valentinus. Valentinus adopted Philo’s method of allegorical interpretation…For a time, Valentinus and his followers existed with the orthodox Christians of Alexandria. (Brown HOJ. Heresies: Heresy and Orthodoxy in the History of the Church. Hendrickson Publishers, Peabody (MA), 1988, p. 86).

Valentinus, even though condemned by Polycarp of Smyrna, when Polycarp visited Rome, ca. 155, was also tolerated by, and existed in, the Roman Church until at the 170s A.D. when he was finally put out after he had greatly influenced the church there.

Speaking of Polycarp, in his famous Letter to the Philippians he uses essentially a literal, not allegorical approach to understanding scripture. The simple truth is that the actual early (prior to the third century) leaders of the church (outside of Alexandria), that the Roman Catholics consider non-heretical, did not try to promote an allegorical method of understanding scripture. But the heretics did.

While there are some passages in the Bible that are intended to be understood allegorically, God’s actual servants believe the word of God over opinions of men who do not truly have sufficient love of the truth.

Earthquake warning

Earthquake in Northridge California, January 17, 1994

COGwriter

Various geologists believe that an earthquake warning system needs to be put into place:

February 3, 2013

The San Andreas Fault is overdue for a powerful earthquake, geologists say, but there is no way to predict when it will strike. Yet as Japan has demonstrated, it is possible to detect the start of a quake and alert at least some potential victims moments before the most damaging shocks hit. That country’s detection and warning system helped minimize the casualties from the massive quake off its coast in 2011, although the resulting tsunami claimed thousands of lives.

Last week, scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey, the California Institute of Technology and UC Berkeley, backed by state Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima), called on the state to develop a similar system… the alerts could reach at least some people a few seconds or more before the shaking begins (the farther from the epicenter, the more advanced the warning). That’s enough time not just for automated controls in buildings and transit systems to react but also for people to take cover.  http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/editorials/la-ed-earthquake-early-warning-20130203,0,3131924.story

Better warning systems may be able to save lives.  Typically, there is no warnings for California earthquakes–the ground and buildings just start to shake and you basically wait it out.  Sometimes there is time to move to a doorway or under a table or something to protect from falling objects.

I believe that a megaquake, which locally tends to be called “the big one,” will at some point in time hit California. And by that, I specifically mean one that is quite large and one that would be even more devastating than the Northridge quake of 1994.

Jesus warned about a time earthquakes and troubles:

8 … And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be…troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

We may be at this prophetic point as all the earthquakes and other problems that have happened in the past couple of years could be considered as “troubles.”  Thus, an official warning system would biblically make sense.

Yet, the biggest earthquake in biblical prophecy, which comes later, is the following one:

18 And there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake as had not occurred since men were on the earth. 19 Now the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And great Babylon was remembered before God, to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20 Then every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. (Revelation 16:18-20)

Notice that the above earthquake is so big that the cities of the nations will fall. Mountains will be leveled and islands “fled away” (more on this can be found in the article Islands and Bible Prophecy). This seems to be the biggest earthquake that will ever hit the planet with humans on it.

It will be bigger than what the usual “experts” have believed was possible. It will change the planet and humble parts of humanity.

It should be noted since that the apparently biggest of all earthquakes seems to take place near the end of the Day of the Lord, it probably cannot happen prior to 2019 (for more on why as well as dates, please see the articles Can the Great Tribulation Begin in 2013, 2014, or 2015? and Does God Have a 6,000 Year Plan? Since I believe that this megaquake needs to happen within the next 1/2 century, that is why I say it is about 100% likely that a megaquake will hit Oregon and California–it will also affect pretty much everyone in the future.
