Ukraine appoints interim president–what will Russia’s Putin do?

The turmoil and change in Ukraine continues:

February 23, 2014

In a special session Sunday, Ukraine’s legislature voted to give the speaker of the Ukrainian assembly temporary presidential power. Oleksandr Turchinov is an ally of of  former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, who was freed from prison Saturday.

The whereabouts of ousted president Viktor Yanukovych remains unclear Sunday, one day after he left Kyiv.

Border guards say a plane intended to take Yanukovych to an unknown destination Saturday was denied permission to take off.

Opposition party leader Vitali Klitschko said Sunday the ousted leader should take full responsibility for the recent deadly violence in Ukraine…

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s parliament has been meeting in a special Sunday session in an attempt to start forming a new national unity government…

Yanukovych, who had fled Kyiv for the eastern city of Kharkiv, said parliament’s decisions are illegal…

Protests erupted in November when President Yanukovych backed out of a trade deal with the European Union in favor of closer ties to Russia. The protests began peacefully but descended into violence. Nearly 100 people were killed, including some protesters shot in the head by police snipers.

Ukraine is split between those in the east who favor ties with Russia, and those in the west who lean toward the European Union.  http://www.voanews.com/content/ukraine-begins-work-on-national-unity-government/1857379.html

Many are wondering, not only what will Ukraine’s elected President Yanukovych and the Ukrainian military do, but what will Russia’s Vladimir Putin do:

Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych has fled the presidential palace and the nation’s capital, taking refuge in his hometown of Donetsk. That city is a 45-minute drive from the Russian border.

Two leading Russian politicians have flown from Moscow to meet with dozens of politicians from Russian-speaking eastern Ukraine. At the meeting, one speaker called for “self-defense units” to block revolutionaries from Kyiv if they try to move on Eastern Ukraine.

Earlier, the speaker of Crimea’s parliament talked about ending Crimea’s 60-year attachment to Ukraine, and returning to Russian control. And on Saturday, Rossiya 24 broadcast an interview with Russian nationalist Alexander Dugin who said Russia should protect Crimea and Eastern Ukraine “with tanks.”

Where is Ukraine heading?

Will Europe’s largest nation split up?

Will Yanukovych rule a rump Ukraine, perhaps returning to the Czarist label: Little Russia?

If Ukraine cracks, will it be peaceful, the way Czechoslovakia split in 1993? Or will it be bloody, the way Yugoslovia did in slow motion in the 1990s?

A lot depends on Russia’s President Vladimir Putin…Putin is cold and calculating, one of the world’s most astute geo-strategists…

What will Putin do?

In the past, Putin has stated publicly what many Russians think privately: that Ukraine is not a nation.

Past Russian leaders have seen Ukraine as an economic colony and as a security buffer zone. It slowed down invaders from Europe. Today, Russia’s navy base in Crimea at Sevastopol projects power into the Black Sea and on to the Mediterranean.

So in a replay of Soviet history, we might soon hear calls for “fraternal assistance” from political leaders in Crimea and eastern Ukraine who want Russian peacekeepers to protect them…

Russian government TV is now in overdrive telling viewers that Ukrainian nationalists are neo-Nazi bandits paid and manipulated by the West. At the same time, the Kremlin is restricting dissident voices – TV channel Dozhd, Ria Novosti news service and Echo Moskvi radio.

And while Russia’s state-controlled media replace their portrayal of Ukrainians as Slavic brothers to with criticism of Western puppets, Russia distributes Russian passports in Crimea. This also was done in the region’s three Russian-speaking separatist enclaves that are now controlled by Russian “peacekeeping troops” – Moldova’s TransDniester and Georgia’s Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

If the Kremlin tries to engineer Crimea’s secession, it would fit with Russia’s divide and control policy toward its immediate neighbors.  http://blogs.voanews.com/russia-watch/2014/02/22/will-putin-try-to-split-ukraine/?from=lister

Last night, a reader sent me the following:

PBS –  The legislator of Kharkov, which calls itself the southeastern Parliament of Ukraine — that’s the area where it’s mainly Russian speaking and adheres to Russia — passed resolutions saying they don’t recognize the authority of the government in Kiev, which means they’re saying they’re sovereign and independent. So in effect, they’re now allied with Russia. Russia’s red line, if you want to ask me about whether Russia would intervene military, it’s red line are the two Russian enclaves in eastern Ukraine: Crimea and Sevastopol. Not only because those are ethnic Russians, but that’s where the Russian naval bases are…where thousands of Russian troops are stationed at the naval base in Sevastopol. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/clashes-ukraine-create-tension-u-s-russia/

“It could be that this spirals out of control,” says Galeotti. On Thursday, the speaker of the Crimean parliament, Vladimir Konstantinov, told Russian radio that the autonomous republic may secede from Ukraine if tensions escalate further in the country. “It may happen if the country splits. Anyway, the entire situation is heading that way.”        http://mag.newsweek.com/2014/02/21/ukraine-zakharchenko-euro-maidan-yanukovych.html

Perhaps I should point out that about 10% in Crimea are Crimean Tatars and most of them do not wish to have direct affiliation with Russia either.  But as much of the eastern portion of Ukraine speaks Russian (at least those over 35) and have ties to the Russian Orthodox Church, many in the east would probably support a government with increased ties to Russia.

The USA is trying to discourage the idea of a split:

February 23, 2014

National Security Adviser Susan Rice said “the United States is on the side of the Ukrainian people” and wants to see democratic elections and “the opportunity for the people of Ukraine to come together in a coalition unity government” after President Viktor Yanukovich was toppled Saturday.Rice said Sunday during an appearance on Meet the Press that it “would be a grave mistake” for Russian President Vladimir Putin to intervene militarily in the Ukraine crisis…

She said, “It’s not in the interest of Ukraine or of Russia or of Europe or of the United States to see a country split. It’s in nobody’s interests to see violence return and the situation escalate.”

She added that “there is not an inherent contradiction between a Ukraine that has longstanding historic and cultural ties to Russia, and a modern Ukraine that wants to integrate more closely with Europe.”

Ukraine depends on Russia, its neighbor to its east, for most of its natural gas and oil supplies…

Ukraine also is facing a potential sovereign debt crisis and the possibility of default. Under a Putin-Yanukovich agreement, Russia is providing $15 billion in loans to Ukraine. That deal may have been overtaken by the events of the past few days.  http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/rice-u-s-backs-ukrainian-people-cautions-russian-involvement-n36606

I doubt US President Barack Obama wants to go to war with Russia over Ukraine.

Since Vladimir Putin wants to diminish the USA’s influence, do not be surprised if he takes decisive action.  He may wish to show the world that he is not afraid of going against what the USA is trying to tell him to do.  He wants to break what is considered to be USA hegemony and a growing European power.  Vladimir Putin would be pleased to contribute to the breaking of the pride of USA power (cf. Leviticus 26:19).

At this stage, Vladimir Putin could basically declare that he is supporting the democratically-elected President of Ukraine and trying to stop terrorists/protesters from imposing their will on all of Ukraine.  This could involve taking a stand in eastern Ukraine, and (and this is remote), possibly taking military actions in Kiev itself.  The European Union and the USA do not wish to get into a hot war with Russia over Ukraine, yet (partially because of his goals for the Sochi Olympics) Vladimir Putin may not wish to upset his cultivated image of a reasonable leader who is interested in peace.  But as Vladimir Putin also wants to create and expand a Eurasian Union, Ukraine may provide him an opportunity to get at least some of that territory in this upcoming organization.

That being said, as I have written before, there are mainly two regions and two clashing attitudes in Ukraine.

One passage of scripture that suggests that at least part of Ukraine could support the European Union is the following:

9 And out of one of them came a little horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Glorious Land.  10 And it grew up to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the ground, and trampled them. 11 He even exalted himself as high as the Prince of the host; and by him the daily sacrifices were taken away, and the place of His sanctuary was cast down. 12 Because of transgression, an army was given over to the horn to oppose the daily sacrifices; and he cast truth down to the ground. He did all this and prospered.  (Daniel 8:9-12)

The European Union developed out of a small union of three European nations–Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg, originally referred to as Benelux.   Ukraine is south and mainly east of the nations that once were part of Benelux–the ‘entity’ that eventually grew into the European Union.  So Ukraine, for a while at least, may end up supporting Europe–though that is not certain.

Ukraine is in in a very strategic location.  Ukraine is located on the edge of Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Moldova.  All but the first two and Moldova are currently in the European Union–and Moldova has applied (see Georgia and Moldova sign up to join European Union, Ukraine does not).

Because of end-time scripture concerning the Medes, it is clear that some in Ukraine will end up supporting a coming Russian-led confederation that will turn against the final European Babylonian Beast power.  Notice the following:

1 The burden against Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw…

17 “Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them,
Who will not regard silver;
And as for gold, they will not delight in it.
18 Also their bows will dash the young men to pieces,
And they will have no pity on the fruit of the womb;
Their eye will not spare children.
19 And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms,
The beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride,
Will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. (Isaiah 13:1, 17-19)

11 Make the arrows bright!
Gather the shields!
The Lord has raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes.
For His plan is against Babylon to destroy it,
Because it is the vengeance of the Lord,
The vengeance for His temple. (Jeremiah 51:11)

Other scriptures show that a northern power will do the same at basically the same time:

9 For behold, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon
An assembly of great nations from the north country,
And they shall array themselves against her;
From there she shall be captured.
Their arrows shall be like those of an expert warrior;
None shall return in vain. (Jeremiah 50:9)

The above is a Russian-led confederation which will involve the Medes, some of which are in Ukraine.

So, while the situation is changing for the nation of Ukraine.  Despite interim steps, those known as Medes will end up turning against the European Babylon power in the end.

Polycarp day: Church of Rome or Church of God?

Sunday, February 23rd, 2014

“Martyrdom of Polycarp” from Ceiling of the Church of St. Polycarp, Smyrna (now called Izmir, Turkey)

COGwriter

February 23rd is considered the “Feast of Polycarp” by the Roman and Eastern Orthodox Catholics. Some believe that he was martyred on that date (though an early Spring martyrdom seems to have been more likely), and thus some read parts or all of a second century account called The Martyrdom of Polycarp.

While the day supposedly in his honor appears to be Church of Rome and not Church of God, his beliefs were more like the latter than the former.

Who was Polycarp?

Polycarp was a disciple of the Apostle John. In the late 1st century (or the early second century) he was put in charge of the Church of God in Smyrna. Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox revere him as a saint (as do some Protestants). We in the Continuing Church of God primarily trace our early history from Peter, Paul, and John through Polycarp (we also trace our history through other areas that had faithful Christians for a while, such as Jerusalem).

Almost everyone associated with Christendom considers that Polycarp was a true and faithful Christian leader.

In the late second century, the Catholic and Orthodox saint Irenaeus wrote:

But Polycarp also was not only instructed by apostles, and conversed with many who had seen Christ, but was also, by apostles in Asia, appointed bishop of the Church in Smyrna…always taught the things which he had learned from the apostles, and which the Church has handed down, and which alone are true. To these things all the Asiatic Churches testify, as do also those men who have succeeded Polycarp down to the present time (Irenaeus. Adversus Haeres. Book III, Chapter 4, Verse 3 and Chapter 3, Verse 4).

So if Polycarp was a faithful saint who was appointed by the apostles, then perhaps real Christians would follow his practices as he followed the Bible?

In the famous account of his martyrdom, he made some statements that even under the face of death suggested that he had a sense of humor:

9:1 But as Polycarp entered into the stadium, a voice came to him from heaven; ‘Be strong, Polycarp, and play the man.’ And no one saw the speaker, but those of our people who were present heard the voice. And at length, when he was brought up, there was a great tumult, for they heard that Polycarp had been apprehended.

9:2 When then he was brought before him, the proconsul enquired whether he were the man. And on his confessing that he was, he tried to persuade him to a denial saying, ‘Have respect to thine age,’ and other things in accordance therewith, as it is their wont to say; ‘Swear by the genius of Caesar; repent and say, Away with the atheists.’

Then Polycarp with solemn countenance looked upon the whole multitude of lawless heathen that were in the stadium, and waved his hand to them; and groaning and looking up to heaven he said, ‘Away with the atheists.’

9:3 But when the magistrate pressed him hard and said, ‘Swear the oath, and I will release You; revile the Christ,’ Polycarp said, ‘Fourscore and six years have I been His servant, and He hath done me no wrong. How then can I blaspheme my King who saved me?’

Perhaps it should be mentioned that some have interpreted the above account as proof that Polycarp died at age 86 and hence was baptized as an infant, but another ancient document (known as the Harris Fragments) records that he lived until age 104, thus is supportive that Polycarp was baptized at age 18 (see also Baptism and the Early Church).

And even though many Greco-Romans observe the presumed date of his martyrdom as a feast, it is not likely that many of those who do so realize that he held many (though not all) views that sometimes conflict with those now held by the Greco-Roman churches. Actually, he was a heretic fighter and even tried to get Anicetus, Bishop of Rome to change.

Here is a summary of some of Polycarp’s beliefs and practices:

A Binitarian view, that acknowledged the Holy Spirit, was held by the apostolic and post-apostolic true Christian leaders, like Polycarp.
Hierarchical church governance was advocated by Polycarp.
The canon of the New Testament was known by Polycarp as he seemed to refer to all the books it in the famous Polycarp’s Letter to the Philippians.
Christmas was not observed by Polycarp nor any professing Christ prior to the third century, or ever by those holding to early teachings.
Deification of Christians after the resurrection was taught by the early leaders of the Church, including Polycarp.
Easter per se was not observed by the apostolic church, and Polycarp fought against it.
The Fall Holy Days were observed by true early Christians, including Polycarp.
The Father was considered to be God by all early professing Christians, including Polycarp.
Polycarp taught against idols (and that would include icons).
Polycarp taught against the immortality of the soul.
Jesus was considered to be God by the true Christians, including Polycarp.
The Kingdom of God was taught by Polycarp.
Leavened Bread was removed from the homes of early Christians like Polycarp.
Lent was not observed by Polycarp.
Limbo was not taught by Polycarp.
Military Service was not allowed for true early Christians like Polycarp.
Millenarianism (a literal thousand year reign of Christ on Earth, often called the millennium) was taught by the early Christians who succeeded Polycarp.
Passover was kept on the 14th of Nisan Polycarp.
Purgatory was not taught by Polycarp.
The Resurrection of the dead was taught Polycarp.
The Sabbath was observed on Saturday by Polycarp.
The Ten Commandments were observed by the apostolic and true post-apostolic Christians, including Polycarp–and in the order that the Continuing Church of God claims they are in.

The Continuing Church of God has all of the same beliefs and practices as Polycarp (although we observe no particular day in his honor).

If Polycarp really was a saint that was placed in charge by Christ’s apostles–which he was–shouldn’t you have the same beliefs and practices?

Ukraine’s parliament votes president out and releases Yulia Tymoshenko; President Yanukovych calls it a coup and flees Kiev

Yulia Tymoshenko

COGwriter

The Parliament of Ukraine took some steps today:

February 22, 2014

Ukraine’s parliament has voted to dismiss President Viktor Yanukovych and called for early presidential elections on May 25, but the embattled leader says he will not resign or leave Ukraine.

Parliament on Saturday also voted to free jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, a former Ukrainian prime minister. She was later released from a prison hospital in the northeastern city of Kharkiv where she was serving time for abuse of power.

Tymoshenko, a long-time adversary of Yanukovych, said after her release that the “dictatorship has fallen.”

She later delivered a fiery speech to thousands of supporters in Kyiv’s Independence Square, the epicenter of Ukraine’s protest movement, telling the crowd, “You are heroes, you are the best of Ukraine,” before breaking down in tears.

She also honored the protesters who have lost their lives.

In an interview Saturday with a Ukrainian television station, Yanukovych said he intends to remain in office. He called the violent uprising against him an example of a “coup,” and compared it to the Nazis’ rise to power in Germany in the 1930s.

The president, who is in Kharkiv near the Russian border, also said all decisions made by Ukraine’s parliament Saturday were illegal.  http://www.voanews.com/content/interfax-ukraines-yanukovych-says-he-will-not-resign/1857091.html

22 February 2014

KIEV, Ukraine — Abandoned by his own guards and reviled across the Ukrainian capital but still determined to recover his shredded authority, President Viktor F. Yanukovych fled Kiev on Saturday to denounce what he called a violent coup, as his official residence, his vast, colonnaded office complex and other once impregnable centers of power fell without a fight to throngs of joyous citizens stunned by their triumph.

While Mr. Yanukovych’s nemesis, former Prime Minister Yulia V. Tymoshenko, was released from a penitentiary hospital, Parliament found the president unable to fulfill his duties and exercised its constitutional powers to set an election for May 25 to select his replacement. But with both Mr. Yanukovych and his Russian patrons speaking of a “coup” carried out by “bandits” and “hooligans,” it was far from clear that the day’s lightning-quick events would be the last act in a struggle that has not just convulsed Ukraine but expanded into an East-West confrontation reminiscent of the Cold War.  http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/23/world/europe/ukraine.html

There are two regions and two clashing attitudes in Ukraine. As I have written before, perhaps there could be a split there. Both Russia and the European Union are truly interested in Ukraine. Ukrainians, like many others, are impressed with economic interests. The EU is more economically impressive than Russia or Russia’s agreed to Eurasian Union is.

The protestors mainly want to be part of the European Union and President Yanukovych wants to move closer to Russia.  President Yanukovych’s basic position seems to be that he tried to negotiate an economic package with the European Union, which balked, but did get a commitment for a major aid package from Russia.  But as Russia does not Ukraine to be part of the European Union, President Yanukovych complied and stopped making certain efforts in that direction.  Those in Kiev and elsewhere protested, though many in eastern Ukraine are more comfortable with Russia than the Europeans.  Religiously, many in the east are Russian Orthodox (and many there speak Russian as there primary language as well).

President Yanukovych’s other position is that he was properly elected and should not be forced out of office by Parliament or any protestors.  However, if more of his security forces defect to the side of the opposition (and many have), his position may become irrelevant, unless the Ukrainian and/or Russian military decides to support him. That could happen.

Unless Ukraine actually splits, Bible prophecy seems to indicate that it would support the European Union for a time, but that ultimately Ukraine will side with Russia (see Russia and Ukraine: Origins and Prophesied Future).

Pope Francis appoints new cardinals. Where do cardinals come from and might one be the final Antichrist?

Saturday, February 22nd, 2014

Cardinal Vestments

COGwriter

Pope Francis has appointed 19 new cardinals:

February 22, 2014

Pope Francis has appointed 19 new cardinals at a ceremony in Rome – the first such appointments of his papacy.

Cardinals are the most senior Roman Catholic clergymen below the pontiff…

The 19 new Cardinals

  • Archbishop Pietro Parolin (Italy)
  • Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri (Italy)
  • Archbishop Gerhard Ludwig Muller (Germany)
  • Archbishop, Beniamino Stella (Italy)
  • Archbishop Vincent Nichols (Britain)
  • Archbishop Leopoldo Jose Brenes Solorzano (Nicaragua)
  • Archbishop Gerald Cyprien Lacroix (Canada)
  • Archbishop Jean-Pierre Kutwa (Ivory Coast)
  • Archbishop Orani Joao Tempesta (Brazil)
  • Archbishop Gualtiero Bassetti (Italy)
  • Archbishop Mario Aurelio Poli (Argentina)
  • Archbishop Andrew Yeom Soo Jung (South Korea)
  • Archbishop Ricardo Ezzati Andrello (Chile)
  • Archbishop Philippe Nakellentuba Ouedraogo (Burkina Faso)
  • Archbishop Orlando B. Quevedo (Philippines)
  • Archbishop Chibly Langlois (Haiti)
  • Monsignor Loris Francesco Capovilla (Italy) *
  • Archbishop Fernando Sebastian Aguilar (Spain) *
  • Monsignor Kelvin Edward Felix (St Lucia) *  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-26301947
In recent times, popes have held the office of cardinal prior to their election as pontifex maximus (a none biblical title that came from paganism).  There are at least three of the above new cardinals with potential to become pontiff, if Pope Francis is not the last pope, an antipope, the final Antichrist. . Two to mention would be Pietro Parolin (current Vatican Secretary of State) and Gerhard Ludwig Muller (prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the position that former Pope Benedict XVI held prior to his pontifical election).  Both of these new cardinals have shown an ecumenical orientation, which I feel that the last pope would need to have based upon my understanding of biblical prophecies (such as those in Revelation 13). While I have not eliminated Pope Francis from possibly being the last pope, there are a few Catholic private prophecies that someone like Archbishop Pietro Parolin, Gerhard Ludwig Muller, or others could possibly fulfill. Not that we can truly rely on Catholic private prophecies, but some are consistent with Bible prophecy, while others flatly contradict it.As far Pietro Parolin goes, he is Italian and Pietro means Peter.  A Catholic bishop named Malachy in the 12th century, put together a list of future popes, and the list has been somewhat accurate. The most famous prediction is the last one on the list for one commonly referred to in English as “Peter the Roman.” Some have also called him Peter II. Malachy’s list was written in Latin. Here is what he wrote about the last pope on his list:

In persecutione extrema SRE sedebit. Petrus Romanus, quipascet oves in multis tribulationibus: quibus transactis civitas septicollis diruetur, et Iudex tremendus iudicabit populum suum. Finis.

Here is an English translation from The Catholic Encyclopedia:

“In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Peter the Roman, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations, after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people. The End.”

Here is a slightly different version of it (with the word “Rome” inserted by Catholic Priest Culleton):

St. Malachy (12th century): During the persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will sit upon the throne, Peter the Roman…the City of Seven Hills (Rome) will be utterly destroyed and the awful Judge will then judge the people. (Culleton, R. Gerald. The Prophets and Our Times. Nihil Obstat: L. Arvin. Imprimatur: Philip G. Scher, Bishop of Monterey-Fresno, November 15, 1941. Reprint 1974, TAN Books, Rockford (IL), p. 138)

Notice that the final Pope sits on the City of Seven Hills (which the Roman Catholic writer G. Culleton labeled Rome above), obviously the same one that Babylon the Great sits on in Revelation 17:9, that God has destroyed in verses 14-18.

But what about other cardinals?

Since even Germanic cardinals are Roman Catholic, they too can be considered to be Roman. And the fact that the Bishop of Rome claims to be in Peter’s place makes all pontiffs a claimed type of “Peter the Roman.”

One leader that was appointed by Pope Francis was Gerhard Ludwig Mueller.  I would like to mention, however, that other Catholic prophecies, seem to suggest that a German leader will be the final Antichrist (there are other Germanic cardinals, such as Kurt Koch that I have been watching). So, because of his name and Italian ancestry, Archbishop Pietro Parolin could be the last pope, an antipope, and the final Antichrist of biblical prophecy. If he follows in the steps of Pope Francis, he certainly will be one to watch. But there are others, with a more Germanic background that also bear watching.

While it is still too early to tell for sure if Pope Francis or one of the leaders he just appointed is the individual who will be the final Antichrist, based upon the ecumenical direction that the Vatican has been taking, that is a possibility.

As far as cardinals go, the word comes a term meaning hinge from according to the Houghton Mifflin dictionary and The Catholic Encyclopedia:

Latin, serving as a hinge, from card, cardin-, hinge  (http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/cardinal)

By the term cardinal (Cardinalis)…an ecclesiastical cardo (Lat. for hinge). (Sägmüller, Johannes Baptist. “Cardinal.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 3. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1908. 22 Feb. 2014 <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03333b.htm>.)

Why is that important?

Two reasons.

First, this term does not come from the Bible (I also did a search of the Douay Rheims, and it is not in there either).

Second, it comes from paganism.

Here is some of what Alexander Hislop reported about that:

If there be any who imagine that there is some occult and mysterious virtue in an apostolic succession that comes through the Papacy, let them seriously consider the real character of the Pope’s own orders, and of those of his bishops and clergy. From the Pope downwards, all can be shown to be now radically Babylonian. The College of Cardinals, with the Pope at its head, is just the counterpart of the Pagan College of Pontiffs, with its “Pontifex Maximus,” or “Sovereign Pontiff,” which had existed in Rome from the earliest times, and which is known to have been framed on the model of the grand original Council of Pontiffs at Babylon. The Pope now pretends to supremacy in the Church as the successor of Peter, to whom it is alleged that our Lord exclusively committed the keys of the kingdom of heaven. But here is the important fact that, till the Pope was invested with the title, which for a thousand years had had attached to it the power of the keys of Janus and Cybele, * no such claim to pre-eminence, or anything approaching to it, was ever publicly made on his part, on the ground of his being the possessor of the keys bestowed on Peter.

* It was only in the second century before the Christian era that the worship of Cybele, under that name, was introduced into Rome; but the same goddess, under the name of Cardea, with the “power of the key,” was worshipped in Rome, along with Janus, ages before. OVID’s Fasti

Very early, indeed, did the bishop of Rome show a proud and ambitious spirit; but, for the first three centuries, their claim for superior honour was founded simply on the dignity of their see, as being that of the imperial city, the capital of the Roman world. When, however, the seat of empire was removed to the East, and Constantinople threatened to eclipse Rome, some new ground for maintaining the dignity of the Bishop of Rome must be sought. That new ground was found, when, about 378, the Pope fell heir to the keys that were the symbols of two well-known Pagan divinities at Rome. Janus bore a key, and Cybele bore a key; and these are the two keys that the Pope emblazons on his arms as the ensigns of his spiritual authority. How the Pope came to be regarded as wielding the power of these keys will appear in the sequel; but that he did, in the popular apprehension, become entitled to that power at the period referred to is certain. Now, when he had come, in the estimation of the Pagans, to occupy the place of the representatives of Janus and Cybele, and therefore to be entitled to bear their keys, the Pope saw that if he could only get it believed among the Christians that Peter alone had the power of the keys, and that he was Peter’s successor, then the sight of these keys would keep up the delusion, and thus, though the temporal dignity of Rome as a city should decay, his own dignity as the Bishop of Rome would be more firmly established than ever. On this policy it is evident he acted. Some time was allowed to pass away, and then, when the secret working of the Mystery of iniquity had prepared the way for it, for the first time did the Pope publicly assert his pre-eminence, as founded on the keys given to Peter. About 378 was he raised to the position which gave him, in Pagan estimation, the power of the keys referred to. In 432, and not before, did he publicly lay claim to the possession of Peter’s keys. This, surely, is a striking coincidence. Does the reader ask how it was possible that men could give credit to such a baseless assumption? The words of Scripture, in regard to this very subject, give a very solemn but satisfactory answer (2 Thess 2:10,11): “Because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved…For this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.” Few lies could be more gross; but, in course of time, it came to be widely believed; and now, as the statue of Jupiter is worshipped at Rome as the veritable image of Peter, so the keys of Janus and Cybele have for ages been devoutly believed to represent the keys of the same apostle…

The priest who explained the Mysteries to the initiated was sometimes called by a Greek term, the Hierophant; but in primitive Chaldee, the real language of the Mysteries, his title, as pronounced without the points, was “Peter”–i.e., “the interpreter.” As the revealer of that which was hidden, nothing was more natural than that, while opening up the esoteric doctrine of the Mysteries, he should be decorated with the keys of the two divinities whose mysteries he unfolded.

Hence, from the mere jingle of words, persons and things essentially different were confounded; and Paganism and Christianity jumbled together, that the towering ambition of a wicked priest might be gratified; and so, to the blinded Christians of the apostacy, the Pope was the representative of Peter the apostle, while to the initiated pagans, he was only the representative of Peter, the interpreter of their well known Mysteries. Thus was the Pope the express counterpart of “Janus, the double-faced.” Oh! what an emphasis of meaning in the Scriptural expression, as applied to the Papacy, “The Mystery of Iniquity”! The reader will now be prepared to understand how it is that the Pope’s Grand Council of State, which assists him in the government of the Church, comes to be called the College of Cardinals. The term Cardinal is derived from Cardo, a hinge. Janus, whose key the Pope bears, was the god of doors and hinges, and was called Patulcius, and Clusius “the opener and the shutter.” This had a blasphemous meaning, for he was worshipped at Rome as the grand mediator. Whatever important business was in hand, whatever deity was to be invoked, an invocation first of all must be addressed to Janus, who was recognised as the “God of gods,” in whose mysterious divinity the characters of father and son were combined, and without that no prayer could be heard–the “door of heaven” could not be opened. It was this same god whose worship prevailed so exceedingly in Asia Minor at the time when our Lord sent, by his servant John, the seven Apocalyptic messages to the churches established in that region. And, therefore, in one of these messages we find Him tacitly rebuking the profane ascription of His own peculiar dignity to that divinity, and asserting His exclusive claim to the prerogative usually attributed to His rival. Thus, Revelation 3:7 “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth.” Now, to this Janus, as Mediator, worshipped in Asia Minor, and equally, from very early times, in Rome, belonged the government of the world; and, “all power in heaven, in earth, and the sea,” according to Pagan ideas, was vested in him. In this character he was said to have “jus vertendi cardinis”–the “power of turning the hinge”–of opening the doors of heaven, or of opening or shutting the gates of peace or war upon earth. The Pope, therefore, when he set up as the High-priest of Janus, assumed also the “jus vertendi cardinis,” “the power of turning the hinge,”–of opening and shutting in the blasphemous Pagan sense. Slowly and cautiously at first was this power asserted; but the foundation being laid, steadily, century after century, was the grand superstructure of priestly power erected upon it. The Pagans, who saw what strides, under Papal directions, Christianity, as professed in Rome, was making towards Paganism, were more than content to recognise the Pope as possessing this power; they gladly encouraged him to rise, step by step, to the full height of the blasphemous pretensions befitting the representative of Janus–pretensions which, as all men know, are now, by the unanimous consent of Western Apostate Christendom, recognised as inherent in the office of the Bishop of Rome. To enable the Pope, however, to rise to the full plenitude of power which he now asserts, the co-operation of others was needed. When his power increased, when his dominion extended, and especially after he became a temporal sovereign, the key of Janus became too heavy for his single hand–he needed some to share with him the power of the “hinge.” Hence his privy councillors, his high functionaries of state, who were associated with him in the government of the Church and the world, got the now well known title of “Cardinals”–the priests of the “hinge.” This title had been previously borne by the high officials of the Roman Emperor, who, as “Pontifex Maximus,” had been himself the representative of Janus, and who delegated his powers to servants of his own. Even in the reign of Theodosius, the Christian Emperor of Rome, the title of Cardinal was borne by his Prime Minister. But now both the name and the power implied in the name have long since disappeared from all civil functionaries of temporal sovereigns; and those only who aid the Pope in wielding the key of Janus–in opening and shutting–are known by the title of Cardinals, or priests of the “hinge.”…

Does the Pope receive the adorations of the Cardinals? The king of Babylon, as Sovereign Pontiff, was adored in like manner…

The Papal mitre is entirely different from the mitre of Aaron and the Jewish high priests. That mitre was a turban. The two-horned mitre, which the Pope wears, when he sits on the high altar at Rome and receives the adoration of the Cardinals, is the very mitre worn by Dagon, the fish-god of the Philistines and Babylonians. There were two ways in which Dagon was anciently represented. The one was when he was depicted as half-man half-fish; the upper part being entirely human, the under part ending in the tail of a fish. The other was, when, to use the words of Layard, “the head of the fish formed a mitre above that of the man, while its scaly, fan-like tail fell as a cloak behind, leaving the human limbs and feet exposed.” Of Dagon in this form Layard gives a representation in his last work; and no one who examines his mitre, and compares it with the Pope’s as given in Elliot’s Horoe, can doubt for a moment that from that, and no other source, has the pontifical mitre been derived.

The mitre/hat shown in the photo at the beginning of this post is a version of the ‘fish hat’ that Alexander Hislop says came from paganism.  The Bible shows that worshipers of Dagon were destroyed by Samson (Judges 16:23-30).  Certain of their garb were not adopted until over a 1000 years after Jesus was killed according to The Catholic Encyclopedia:

Chief among the insignia of the cardinal is the red hat, first worn by the legati a latere (cardinal envoys of the pope). It was granted to the secular cardinals by Innocent IV at the Synod of Lyons in 1245, and to the religious cardinals by Gregory XIV in 1591; the latter, it must be noted, continue to wear the distinctive habit of their order (Barmgarten, “Die Uebersendung des rothen Hutes” in “Hist. Jahrbuch”, XXVI, 99 sqq.). They also wear the red (scarlet) biretta, that was granted to them, probably, by Paul II (1464-71). They also have the right to wear scarlet, particularly a scarlet mantle, which according to tradition was probably granted them by Boniface VIII (1294-1303). They also wear a ring with a sapphire stone, and use the ombrellino that is held over them whenever they quit their carriages to accompany with bare heads the Blessed Sacrament, if perchance they meet It on their way. In their titular churches a baldacchino covers the cardinalitial throne, and they have the right to use in these churches the episcopal ornaments, i.e. the mitre of damask silk (since Paul II), the crosier and the pectoral cross.  (Sägmüller, Johannes Baptist. “Cardinal.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 3. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1908. 22 Feb. 2014 <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/03333b.htm>.)

Cardinals come from paganism.  The vestments they wear were not adopted until at least the fourth century by the Church of Rome.  Essentially, they are a combination of remains of worship of Mithras and Dagon, and it took even more centuries for them to develop into the position that they now hold.  Of course, that also helps prove that there precise position did not come from the Bible and such vestments that they use were not worn by the original Apostles nor other early Christian leaders.

Cardinals, and their garb, were adapted from paganism.  This is one of the many reasons to consider that the final Antichrist will claim ties to the Church of Rome.  I would like to emphasize that this leader will CLAIM ties to Rome, but ultimately will betray as that seems to be laid out in Revelation 13, 17, and 19.

Papias of Hierapolis honored by those who consider he espoused a doctrine associated with ‘antichrist’

Hierapolis, Turkey (Photo by Joyce Thiel)

COGwriter

The Catholics of Rome consider February 22nd as the day to honor Papius of Hierapolis. This is somewhat odd in that Papius held Church of God, not Church of Rome views.  One of which, the current Catechism of the Catholic Church considers to be a doctrine of antichrist.

The Catholic Encyclopedia notes that Papias was,

Bishop of Hierapolis (close to Laodicea and Colossae in the valley of the Lycus in Phrygia) and Apostolic Father, called by St. Irenaeus “a hearer of John, and companion of Polycarp, a man of old time”. He wrote a work in five books, logion kyriakon exegesis, of which all but some fragments is lost…Of Papias’s life nothing is known. If Polycarp was born in 69, his “comrade” may have been born a few years earlier…The work of Papias was evidently written in his old age, say between the years 115 and 140 “…His knowledge of St. John’s Gospel is proved not merely by his mention of aloes, but by a citation of John 14:2, which occurs in the curious prophecy of a miraculous vintage in the millennium which he attributed to Our Lord…

Eusebius says that Papias frequently cited traditions of John…Eusebius says Papias “published a story of a woman accused of many sins before the Lord, which is contained in the Gospel according to the Hebrews”. This appears to refer to the pericope adulterae (John 8). The cause of the loss of this precious work of an Apostolic Father was the chiliastic view which he taught, like St. Justin and St. Irenæus. (Chapman J. Transcribed by Marcia L. Bellafiore. St. Papias. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume XI. Copyright © 1911 by Robert Appleton Company. Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight. Nihil Obstat, February 1, 1911. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor. Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York).

Since John and Polycarp were quartodecimans (Eusebius. Church History. Book V, Chapter 24), apparently so was Papias (since the churches in Asia Minor had not adopted a Sunday Passover at this time, Ibid). Yet, being a Quartodeciman was seriously denounced by an edict of Theodosius in the late fourth century.

Papias and John

The Catholic Encyclopedia notes this about Papias the the Apostle John,

The author of the Second and Third Epistles of John designates himself in the superscription of each by the name (ho presbyteros), “the ancient”, “the old”. Papias, Bishop of Hierapolis, also uses the same name to designate the “Presbyter John” as in addition to Aristion, his particular authority, directly after he has named the presbyters Andrew, Peter, Philip, Thomas, James, John, and Matthew (in Eusebius, “Hist. eccl.”, III, xxxix, 4)…St. Irenaeus also positively designates the Apostle and Evangelist John as the teacher of Papias, and neither he nor any other writer before Eusebius had any idea of a second John in Asia (Adv. haer., V, xxxiii, 4). In what Papias himself says the connection plainly shows that in this passage by the word presbyters only Apostles can be understood. If John is mentioned twice the explanation lies in the peculiar relationship in which Papias stood to this, his most eminent teacher. By inquiring of others he had learned some things indirectly from John, just as he had from the other Apostles referred to. In addition he had received information concerning the teachings and acts of Jesus directly, without the intervention of others, from the still living “Presbyter John”, as he also had from Aristion. Thus the teaching of Papias casts absolutely no doubt upon what the New-Testament writings presuppose and expressly mention concerning the residence of the Evangelist John in Asia (Fonck L. Transcribed by Michael Little. St. John the Evangelist. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume VIII Copyright © 1910 by Robert Appleton Company Online Edition Copyright © 2003 by K. Knight Nihil Obstat, October 1, 1910. Remy Lafort, S.T.D., Censor Imprimatur. +John Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York).

Thus, it appears that Papias directly knew the Apostle John. The Apostle John wrote the Book of Revelation which, among other things, described a thousand year reign of Christ on the earth (Revelation 20:4).

Eusebius recorded the following about Papias:

1. There are extant five books of Papias, which bear the title Expositions of Oracles of the Lord. Irenæus makes mention of these as the only works written by him, in the following words: “These things are attested by Papias, an ancient man who was a hearer of John and a companion of Polycarp, in his fourth book. For five books have been written by him.” These are the words of Irenæus.
2. But Papias himself in the preface to his discourses by no means declares that he was himself a hearer and eye-witness of the holy apostles, but he shows by the words which he uses that he received the doctrines of the faith from those who were their friends.
3. He says: But I shall not hesitate also to put down for you along with my interpretations whatsoever things I have at any time learned carefully from the elders and carefully remembered, guaranteeing their truth. For I did not, like the multitude, take pleasure in those that speak much, but in those that teach the truth; not in those that relate strange commandments, but in those that deliver the commandments given by the Lord to faith, and springing from the truth itself.
4. If, then, any one came, who had been a follower of the elders, I questioned him in regard to the words of the elders— what Andrew or what Peter said, or what was said by Philip, or by Thomas, or by James, or by John, or by Matthew, or by any other of the disciples of the Lord, and what things Aristion and the presbyter John, the disciples of the Lord, say. For I did not think that what was to be gotten from the books would profit me as much as what came from the living and abiding voice.
5. It is worth while observing here that the name John is twice enumerated by him. The first one he mentions in connection with Peter and James and Matthew and the rest of the apostles, clearly meaning the evangelist; but the other John he mentions after an interval, and places him among others outside of the number of the apostles, putting Aristion before him, and he distinctly calls him a presbyter.
6. This shows that the statement of those is true, who say that there were two persons in Asia that bore the same name, and that there were two tombs in Ephesus, each of which, even to the present day, is called John’s. It is important to notice this. For it is probable that it was the second, if one is not willing to admit that it was the first that saw the Revelation, which is ascribed by name to John.
7. And Papias, of whom we are now speaking, confesses that he received the words of the apostles from those that followed them, but says that he was himself a hearer of Aristion and the presbyter John. At least he mentions them frequently by name, and gives their traditions in his writings. These things, we hope, have not been uselessly adduced by us.
8. But it is fitting to subjoin to the words of Papias which have been quoted, other passages from his works in which he relates some other wonderful events which he claims to have received from tradition.
9. That Philip the apostle dwelt at Hierapolis with his daughters has been already stated. But it must be noted here that Papias, their contemporary, says that he heard a wonderful tale from the daughters of Philip. For he relates that in his time one rose from the dead. And he tells another wonderful story of Justus, surnamed Barsabbas: that he drank a deadly poison, and yet, by the grace of the Lord, suffered no harm.
10. The Book of Acts records that the holy apostles after the ascension of the Saviour, put forward this Justus, together with Matthias, and prayed that one might be chosen in place of the traitor Judas, to fill up their number. The account is as follows: “And they put forward two, Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias; and they prayed and said.” Acts 1:23 11. The same writer gives also other accounts which he says came to him through unwritten tradition, certain strange parables and teachings of the Saviour, and some other more mythical things.
12. To these belong his statement that there will be a period of some thousand years after the resurrection of the dead, and that the kingdom of Christ will be set up in material form on this very earth. I suppose he got these ideas through a misunderstanding of the apostolic accounts, not perceiving that the things said by them were spoken mystically in figures.
13. For he appears to have been of very limited understanding, as one can see from his discourses. But it was due to him that so many of the Church Fathers after him adopted a like opinion, urging in their own support the antiquity of the man; as for instance Irenæus and any one else that may have proclaimed similar views.
14. Papias gives also in his own work other accounts of the words of the Lord on the authority of Aristion who was mentioned above, and traditions as handed down by the presbyter John; to which we refer those who are fond of learning. But now we must add to the words of his which we have already quoted the tradition which he gives in regard to Mark, the author of the Gospel.
15. “This also the presbyter said: Mark, having become the interpreter of Peter, wrote down accurately, though not in order, whatsoever he remembered of the things said or done by Christ. For he neither heard the Lord nor followed him, but afterward, as I said, he followed Peter, who adapted his teaching to the needs of his hearers, but with no intention of giving a connected account of the Lord’s discourses, so that Mark committed no error while he thus wrote some things as he remembered them. For he was careful of one thing, not to omit any of the things which he had heard, and not to state any of them falsely.” These things are related by Papias concerning Mark.
16. But concerning Matthew he writes as follows: “So then Matthew wrote the oracles in the Hebrew language, and every one interpreted them as he was able.” And the same writer uses testimonies from the first Epistle of John and from that of Peter likewise. And he relates another story of a woman, who was accused of many sins before the Lord, which is contained in the Gospel according to the Hebrews. These things we have thought it necessary to observe in addition to what has been already stated. (Eusebius. The History of the Church, Book 3, Chapter XXXIX; Digireads, pp. 68-69)

So, this “Catholic saint” taught the millennium–a doctrine that is now denounced by the Vatican as associated with Antichrist (see Did The Early Church Teach Millenarianism?).

Papias would have observed Passover on the 14th of Nisan instead of a Sunday.  Neither Papias nor other early Christian leaders observed Lent nor Easter.

The Roman Catholic Church, in spite of the fact that it admits that many of its early saints taught the millennium, now strongly condemns this belief. Notice:

676 The Antichrist’s deception already begins to take shape in the world every time the claim is made to realize within history that messianic hope which can only be realized beyond history through the eschatological judgment. The Church has rejected even modified forms of this falsification of the kingdom to come under the name of millenarianism, especially the “intrinsically perverse” political form of a secular messianism. (Catechism of the Catholic Church. Imprimatur Potest +Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Doubleday, NY 1995, p. 194).

It should be noted that the millennial teaching appears to be the only doctrine associated with Antichrist that is condemned in the current official Catechism of the Catholic Church (which is the first new one in hundreds of years). The one that has the imprimatur of Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger who is now called Pope Emeritus and was Pope Benedict XVI.

Notice something else that Joseph Ratzinger wrote in a paper titled The Theology of History in St. Bonaventure prior to becoming pope:

“…both Chiliasm [the teaching of the Millennium] and Montanism were declared heretical and were excluded from the universal church; for they both denied this vision [the “Christ is the end of the ages” vision] and awaited still another period of more definitive salvation to follow after the age of Christ” (as cited in Birch, pp. 515-516; note the comments within [] were from the Catholic writer Birch).

This is an odd statement for several reasons. It was the leaders in Asia Minor who stood for the Millennium and were the first to oppose Montanism–whom the Roman Catholics originally tolerated (please see the article Location of the Early Church)–hence the belief in one is NOT necessarily related to the other.

The other reason this condemnation is odd, is that even though Origen was opposed to the millennium Origen also taught that there was definitive salvation after what then Cardinal Ratzinger calls “the age of Christ” (please see the article Hope of Salvation: How the Continuing Church of God Differs from Protestantism). Yet pontiff emeritus Benedict XVI has publicly praised Origin as a “true teacher” (for documentation, see What is the Appropriate Form of Biblical Interpretation?).

It appears to me that the millennial view is being so definitely condemned now, because we are getting so close to that time when the Church of Rome is expected to compromise more and the Pope has prepared his followers to do that. It seems like the final revised Roman Church intends to warn against following any (like the actual two witnesses) who will be teaching the original millennial doctrine. Of course, there still are Catholics who accept the biblical teaching on the millennium–but they are becoming more and more of a minority within their church.

Despite any Catholic observance in Papias’ honor, the reality is that based on what is actually known about Papias, he had views closer to the hurch of God, than the current Church of Rome.

China warns Barack Obama, while top USA Army official claims that USA and China have common military objectives

Friday, February 21st, 2014

Two seemingly conflicting reports about the USA and China were in the news today:

February 21, 2014

Chinese officials warned President Barack Obama on Friday that his meeting with the Dalai Lama would “interfere with the internal affairs of China.”

“By arranging a meeting between the President and the Dalai Lama, the U.S. side will grossly interfere in the internal affairs of China, seriously violate norms governing international relations and severely impair China-U.S. relations,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement, CNN reports. Obama is meeting Friday with the Dalai Lama, who China considers to be a separatist fueling unrest in Tibet…

“The United States recognizes Tibet to be a part of the People’s Republic of China and we do not support Tibetan independence,” said National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden. http://world.time.com/2014/02/21/barack-obama-dalai-lama-china-tibet/

February 21, 2014

The U.S. Army’s top officer pledged more dialogue on “common objectives” as he met Chinese generals in Beijing.

Army Chief of Staff Ray Odierno was greeted Friday with full military honors at China’s Defense Ministry.

His visit comes amid U.S. criticism of China’s policies toward its neighbors over territorial claims in the East and South China Seas.

However, before holding closed-door meetings, Odierno said he would focus on concerns that both sides share.

“We have many common objectives about our countries so I think it’s important to have this kind of dialogue. We both have incredibly professional armies so I look forward to the substantive discussions that we will have on both regional and international issues,” said Odierno…

One senior U.S. Navy official last week said Beijing was preparing for a “short, sharp war” with Japan during which it would seize disputed islands. Pentagon officials on Thursday distanced themselves from the comments, saying Captain James Fanell was expressing his personal views.

Many in China, meanwhile, view the White House’s military and economic focus on Asia as an attempt to contain its rise and regional influence – a charge U.S. officials deny.   http://www.voanews.com/content/top-us-army-officer-we-have-common-objectives-with-china/1856136.html

It is disappointing that a country like the USA, which had its own war for independence for less reasons than the Tibetans who want peaceful independence, will not at least publicly state it is in favor of freedom for those in Tibet.  But the USA appears to be more worried about offending the Chinese than to stand for freedom.  Not that I am advocating that the USA engage in actual war over this, but if the USA is the bastion of freedom and ‘defender of democracy’ as it wishes to see itself, then not supporting what the Tibetan people want is in contradiction to that, and also hypocritical.  The Bible warns that a particular hypocritical nation will be destroyed (Isaiah 10:6, KJV), and I believe that the Bible further identifies this nation as being associated with the USA (see Anglo – America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel and/or watch Where are the Ten Lost Tribes? Why does it matter?).  I believe that the USA is lying when its officials state that the White House’s military and economic focus on Asia as NOT an attempt to contain its rise and regional influence.  The Chinese see through this hypocrisy.

The reality is that USA is hoping to avoid military conflict with China, while also preparing for it.

There should be no doubt that China hopes to develop a more powerful military. However, just because they want to do this, does not mean that China will be a successful as it wants to be, at least not yet. But what is happening is that the USA itself is so concerned about China that it has declared that it will shift military spending towards issues related to Asia (see USA’s Biden rejects China’ fly zone requirements and confirms plan for more focus on Asia-Pacific) and away from the level of support it has had in Europe. This will force the Europeans to develop more of their own military technology, much to the destruction of the USA.  The USA considers the continental Europeans to be friends (though it only considers the nations of Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand as ‘close friends), and the Bible warns that ‘friends’ will turn against them (Lamentations 1:1-2).

USA military experts have already stated that the USA is losing (if it has not already lost it) its ability to fight multiple front wars against serious enemies. This means that the USA has concluded that it needs to better guess where its major military threat will come from, and prepare accordingly.  Yet, if USA leaders understood biblical prophecy, then they would prepare for a war against Europe (cf. Daniel 11:39;m Isaiah 10:5-11). But because they really do not, they are more and more concluding that they must prepare for war/containment of China, and instead trust the Europeans too much.

This will not end well for the USA as Europe will defeat it.

Because the government of the USA has discounted biblical prophecy, it seems to think that China (along with Russia) is the biggest threat militarily and is taking steps towards China that will get it to not realize the real threat that it faces. China’s moves and statement will likely continue to get more leaders in the USA to fear China and embrace Europe–to their peril (cf. Isaiah 3:12; 9:16; Daniel 11:39)–the Bible teaches that ‘friends’ will turn against the USA and its Anglo-Saxon allies (Lamentations 1:1-2).

Pompeii movie released; observations about why Pompeii may have been destroyed

Friday, February 21st, 2014

COGwriter

A movie titled Pompeii is being released in the USA and certain other areas today:

February 21, 2014

The poor people of Pompeii were once blissfully unaware that a mighty volcano was about to erupt, crushing and burning everything in its wake…{a} new historical disaster movie Pompeii is opening in the US today…

Pompeii, the latest movie from Resident Evil director Paul W.S Anderson follows the story of a young slave-turned-gladiator Milo, played by Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington, who is fighting for his love Cassia (Emily Browning) when Mount Vesuvius erupts and wrecks its devastating havoc upon the town.

Part Gladiator, part Game of Thrones, part BBC docu-drama, Pompeii mines the widespread appeal of historical romance and the perils of natural disaster rather than breaking any new ground. That said, the movie looks exceptionally well-made and audiences will forever have a fascination with the tragedy and mystery of the Pompeii disaster. http://www.contactmusic.com/article/the-lego-movie-box-office-pompeii-kit-harington-release-this-weekend_4079978

While I am not expecting to see the movie Pompeii, my wife and I have visited the actual ruins of Pompeii in Italy.  Instead of showing any of our photos (none of which show the volcano erupting as that was long ago), since the movie was released I felt that the movie poster should be shown.

The poster seems to suggest disaster with love at the same time.  And, there probably were heroic individuals in love when Pompeii was destroyed.

But why was Pompeii destroyed?

Until my wife and I visited Pompeii, I had not really thought about it.  But after walking through the ruins, seeing the remaining art on buildings, and doing some research, it was clear that Pompeii was a major ‘red light district’ for that region of Italy.  Inside several of the buildings were faded paintings of what would best be described as pornography.  This was shocking, and perhaps is why Pompeii was destroyed.

Notice some passages of scriptures that would tend to support that conclusion:

15 Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination?
No! They were not at all ashamed;
Nor did they know how to blush.
Therefore they shall fall among those who fall;
At the time I punish them,
They shall be cast down,” says the Lord.  (Jeremiah 6:15)

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. (Romans 1:28-32)

Sexual immorality is not harmless. Notice also some scriptures related to Sodom and Gomorrah:

7 as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. (Jude 7)

6…the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly (2 Peter 2:6)

Like Sodom and Gomorrah, parts of Pompeii were turned into ashes and covered with ashes.

I would also like to again quote the first line of the news article this post began with:

The poor people of Pompeii were once blissfully unaware that a mighty volcano was about to erupt, crushing and burning everything in its wake.

The people of Pompeii, according to the above report, were “blissfully ignorant.” They saw the volcano (which is still next to the ruins), they knew that the town/city was basically a brothel, but felt that they were fine or that they would have enough warning right before Mt. Vesuvius would erupt.

They were wrong.

Many who profess Christ realize that the moral direction in the USA, Anglo-Saxon, and other lands is wrong.  The pushing of the homosexual agenda by government and entertainment leaders, as well as pushing pornography, is not good.  The increased acceptance of pornography, homosexuality, and other forms of sexual immorality will lead to disaster in the future.  Many do not believe that calamity will strike again, but it will.  Notice:

8 “Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are on the sinful kingdom,
And I will destroy it from the face of the earth;
Yet I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob,”
Says the Lord.

9 “For surely I will command,
And will sift the house of Israel among all nations,
As grain is sifted in a sieve;
Yet not the smallest grain shall fall to the ground.
10 All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword,
Who say, ‘The calamity shall not overtake nor confront us.’  (Amos 9:8-10)

Those in the USA and its Anglo-Saxon allies of the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are part of the end-time ‘house of Jacob’ (cf. Genesis 48:3,16; see also Anglo – America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel).  Though they will not be utterly destroyed (perhaps 10% will survive, cf. Ezekiel 5:1-4).

Sadly, like most in Pompeii, most do not believe that the USA and its Anglo-Saxon allies will suffer devastating calamity.  But it will come to pass.  While the Bible offers to protect some Christians at the end times (Revelation 3:10; 12:14-16), it teaches that all will not be protected (Revelation 12:17; Daniel 7:25).

Do not be like those in Pompeii and think that without taking steps soon enough that you will truly know when the time to flee will come.  The Bible clearly teaches that those that will be protected must ‘gather together…before the decree is issued’ (Zephaniah 2:1,2), so that it “may be that you will be hidden in the day of the Lord’s anger” (Zephaniah 2:3).

Perseverence: HWA’s 6th Law of Success

Friday, February 21st, 2014

COGwriter

In his booklet, The Seven Laws of Success, the late Herbert W. Armstrong wrote the following related to the sixth law of success:

Importance of Law Number 6

Among the case histories recounted in the beginning pages was that of the president of a major automobile manufacturing corporation. He had utilized the first five of these laws—that is, except he had the usual goal that leads in the wrong direction. Yet in the flash depression of 1920, when he lost his personal fortune, he committed suicide.

This man had reached the point where he was, to all appearances, through! During life he had resourcefully solved emergencies and problems that arose. But now, suddenly, it seemed that everything had been swept from under his feet. Everything he had worked for. Everything he had accumulated. Everything he had set his heart on! There was NOTHING left! He was washed up—finished! So it seemed to him. I never knew his private life.

He gave up! He committed suicide. So near success, yet so far!

Yes, nine in ten, at least once or twice in a lifetime, come to the place where they appear to be totally defeated! All is lost!–`apparently, that is. They give up and quit, when just a little more faith and perseverance—just a little more STICK-TO IT-IVENESS would have turned apparent certain failure into glorious success.

Law number six, then, is PERSEVERANCE—stick-to-it-iveness!

I know! I have reached that point more than once! I, too, had everything swept out from under me in that flash depression of 1920.

I had been making an income, still in my twenties, equivalent to an executive’s salary in today’s dollar value. But some 90 percent of it came from five or six big Midwestern corporations. Most of these great corporations “went under”—that is, they went into “receivers’” hands.

Later, in 1926, an advertising business I had started on the west coast was wiped out from under me by an association decision made in the east. A million-dollar project was dashed to oblivion by the stock-market crash and depression of 1929. But I did not quit or give up living. That was when my life GOAL was changed!

Even the first two years of the operation of Ambassador College stared constant defeat in the face. Nearly everybody thought we were through—we had failed! WHY, they wondered, didn’t I realize it and QUIT? In those days I had to listen to associates around me talking constantly about “when this college folds up.”

But it didn’t fold up! By the year 1949 we got over our first financial hump. Later, the second. Today, I think we may be justified in saying that the college is, indeed, a glorious SUCCESS! And our other operations today are worldwide on a major scale.

Things do not always go as planned. Instead of giving up, Christians should pray and try to persevere when needed.
