The requirement supposedly imposed against Jews to register in eastern Ukraine has been denounced:

Posters and leaflets have appeared in Donetsk, Eastern Ukrainian, demanding Jews register, pay a new tax or leave, because of ‘their support for the Kiev government’.
The leaflets were signed by the pro-Russian group People’s Republic of Donetsk, but it says they are fake and designed to discredit Moscow’s supporters. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-27086345
Much of the world, including the U.S. State Department, understandably reacted with horror … when Jewish residents of Donestk, Ukraine, reported being given flyers outside of a synagogue requiring them to “register” their citizenship and declare their property. According to reports first circulated by Israeli news site Ynet and USA Today, the pamphlets were delivered by masked men holding the Russian Federation flag and directed Jews to a government building currently occupied by pro-Russian forces.
But Denis Pushilin, the Russian separatist whose name is on the flyers, claims he has nothing to do with them, and that the documents were spread to make his side look bad.
“Evasion of registration will result in citizenship revoke and you will be forced outside the country with a confiscation of property,” reads the flyer, according to a translation. It also lists a $50 fee for doing so.
“Some idiots yesterday were giving out these flyers in targeted areas,” hoping “to blame the attack on separatists,” said Pushilin. Nonetheless, the U.S. government condemned the flyers, which are indeed disgusting, whoever created them:

The leaflets were distributed to Jews as they left Passover services. Somebody was sending a message. This shows that the 21st century is not immune from antisemitism and Jewish persecution. Russia had previously indicated that the Kiev government was antisemitic. Obviously, some, at least small group, is or the leaflets would never have been distributed by anybody.

Putin: Normalization of Ties Depends on West

Russian President Vladimir Putin says nothing should impede the normalization of relations between Russia and the West, after ties have hit a post-Cold War low due to the standoff over Ukraine.
However, Putin says the normalization of ties does not only depend on Russia. He said it depends on the West. Putin’s comments were released by Russian news agencies from a state television interview to be broadcast Saturday.
The Obama administration has warned Russia that it could face additional sanctions if it fails to adhere to a new international deal on Ukraine or moves its forces on the border into eastern Ukraine.
U.S. President Barack Obama’s national security advisor, Susan Rice, told reporters at the White House Friday that the U.S. has been clear that it and its European partners “remain ready to impose additional costs on Russia” if it fails to meet its obligations.
Rice reiterated an earlier statement by State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki that the U.S. believes Russia has a responsibility to use its influence to restrain and withdraw the pro-Russian militants occupying government buildings in eastern Ukraine.
But pro-Russian militant leader Denis Pushilin in eastern Ukraine said earlier that his men are not bound by the deal and will only stand down after the Ukrainian government resigns.
Thursday’s agreement, which followed talks between Ukraine, Russia, the United States and the European Union, calls for all government buildings to be evacuated and for the militants to be disarmed.
But it includes few concrete measures for ending the crisis, and many Western leaders are skeptical about Russia holding up its end of the bargain.
Rice said the U.S. will see over the coming days whether Russia upholds its agreement, while Psaki told reporters the U.S. is “clear-eyed” about Russia’s record of not implementing steps in the past.
The seven-paragraph agreement does not specifically require Moscow to withdraw 40,000 troops massed on its border with Ukraine, and does not reference Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula last month. Pro-Russian activists in eastern Ukraine refused to vacate the government facilities they have occupied, defying a compromise agreement struck a day earlier by international powers, including Russia, that called on them to leave.
Denis Pushilin, the leader of the uprising that calls itself the People’s Republic of Donetsk, said at a news conference Friday in the southeast Ukrainian city’s seized administration building that the activists wouldn’t exit until the new leaders in Kiev leave the government, which he said they have been occupying unlawfully since late February.
“After that, we’ll also agree to do it,” Mr. Pushilin said. Instead, he said he and other activists in the building were continuing to prepare for a referendum on the southeast Ukraine region’s future, which they intend to hold by May 11. We will defend our interests “until the last drop of blood if necessary” against the “Kiev junta,” he said…
Kiev and its Western allies say Moscow has incited the separatist uprising in eastern Ukraine, a charge the Kremlin has denied. Western diplomats say they aren’t optimistic that Russia will follow through and help force the militants to disarm and vacate the occupied buildings across eastern Ukraine. Russian officials say they have no influence over those protesters…
Russia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement Friday evening saying it was disappointed with U.S. official responses to the Geneva deal and accused Washington of stubbornly supporting the Kiev government in what Moscow called its determination to use force against pro-Russian protesters in the east. The Foreign Ministry said the Geneva agreement’s call on protesters to give up weapons and occupied buildings should apply first to those in Kiev, “who participated in the February coup.”…
Alexander Khryakov, another leader in the uprising, said … his personal preference is a return to the Soviet Union, which would make the region part of the same country as Russia.

It appears that the deal that the Russians signed in Geneva apparently does not obligate them to do much of anything, yet the position of the Obama Administration is that Russia needs to something not specified in the agreement. It sort of reminds me of the agreement between the USA and Iran, which Iran touted as a victory.
Ukraine still has major issues and they were not truly resolved by the deal in Geneva.

While church leaders of all faiths in Ukraine appear to support the new political leadership in Kyiv, the Russian clergy are keeping silent about recent events.
“We have yet to hear the Russian Orthodox Church take a stance on the situation in Ukraine. They have not even called for a truce during Easter,” said Alexander Soldatov, a Russian journalist who covers religion.
The current conflict in Ukraine may be causing a schism between the Russian Orthodox Church and its Ukranian affiliate. The Russian Orthodox Church, which has close ties to the Russian government, would not comment for this report. Professor Zubov had this to say.
“If they come out in support of President Putin, their Ukrainian chapter could break off. If they support Ukraine, it would cause big problems with the Russian presidential administration,” said Zubov.
About 40 percent of Orthodox believers in Ukraine are Russian. Zubov and Soldatov say Russian Patriarch Kirill is at odds with President Putin over the conflict. As evidence, they cite Kirill’s absence from Putin’s March 18 Crimea address in the Kremlin.
But Ukranian Orthodox priest Yakov Krotov dismisses that idea.
“Officially, the church is completely behind Putin. The rumors about Patriarch Kirill and Putin are just rumors,” he said.

The Russian Orthodox Church has long had a tendency to be political, and I do not doubt that its Patriarch Kirill is ‘hedging his bets.’
The situation in Ukraine remains divided and tense.
Russia wants all the territory of Ukraine it can get, but at minimum wants to keep as much of Ukraine out of the European Union as possible. So far, Russia seems to be getting its way.
