The earliest surviving paintings claimed to be of Jesus, from a church at the ruined city of Dura-Europos on the Euphrates (dating from first half of the 3rd Century AD)

The BBC addressed the fact that the commonly seen pictures claimed to be Jesus are false, but instead are a Byzantine version of Zeus:

Everyone knows what Jesus looks like. He is the most painted figure in all of Western art, recognised everywhere as having long hair and a beard, a long robe with long sleeves (often white) and a mantle (often blue).

Jesus is so familiar that he can be recognised on pancakes or pieces of toast.

But did he really look like this?

Probably not.

In fact this familiar image of Jesus actually comes from the Byzantine era, from the 4th Century onwards, and Byzantine representations of Jesus were symbolic – they were all about meaning, not historical accuracy.

They were based on the image of an enthroned emperor, as we see in the altar mosaic of the Santa Pudenziana church in Rome. …

Jesus is dressed in a gold toga. He is the heavenly ruler of all the world, familiar from the famous statue of long-haired and bearded Olympian Zeus on a throne . . . Byzantine artists, looking to show Christ’s heavenly rule as cosmic King, invented him as a younger version of Zeus. From the above, we can also conclude when we have reports of people who claim to have seen Jesus in various ways, those who claimed He had long hair, etc. clearly were not seeing Jesus.

The same can be said of the Shroud of Turin–that could not possibly be Jesus (the male in that is too tall).

It is a version of the pagan deity Zeus that many people are bowing down before or otherwise venerating (perhaps it should also be added here that many of the portrayals of Jesus’ mother Mary, came from worship of goddesses, like Diana, who the Greeks called Artemis).

While the BBC article used the expression “probably not” related to whether Jesus had long hair, the biblical answer is DEFINITELY NOT.

Notice what the Bible says:

14 Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him? (1 Corinthians 11:14)

Jesus did not have long hair. If He did, the Apostle Paul would not have written the above. For additional proof, consider the following:

1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1)

Paul would not be imitating Christ by denouncing His hair length. Consider also that God inspire the Apostle John to write:

6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. (1 John 2:6)

If Jesus had long hair, God would have not inspired John to say to walk as Jesus walked, while also inspiring Paul to write that it is a shame for a man to have long hair.

Now let’s see some more from the BBC article:

When early Christians were not showing Christ as heavenly ruler, they showed Jesus as an actual man like any other: beardless and short-haired. … in the 1st Century Graeco-Roman world, being clean-shaven and short-haired was considered absolutely essential. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-35120965

No early Christian ever showed Jesus as a long haired person. Having short hair was normal. The earliest found depictions of Jesus (from the 3rd century as shown at the beginning of this post) do NOT show Jesus to have had long hair. While no one knew even then what Jesus actually looked like, it took another century (and likely the influence of the idolatrous Emperor Constantine) before the longed-hair portrayals begin to appear in mass.

Furthermore, if Jesus had distinctively long hair, He would have been highly recognizable. But the Bible shows that He was not. Once, while He was speaking to the Jews during the day, they wanted to stone Him, but He escaped right after talking to them (John 10:31-39), which indicates He was not excessively tall (like the Shroud of Turin suggests) or had distinguishing features like long hair.

Furthermore, the Jewish leaders felt the need to pay Judas (Mark 14:10) to point out Jesus with a kiss so they could arrest Him (Mark 14:43-46), which they would not have needed to do if He was distinguished with features like long hair.

Getting back to the BBC article, notice why else Jesus would not have had long hair:

If he had had even slightly long hair, we would expect some reaction. Jewish men who had unkempt beards and were slightly long-haired were immediately identifiable as men who had taken a Nazirite vow. This meant they would dedicate themselves to God for a period of time, not drink wine or cut their hair – and at the end of this period they would shave their heads in a special ceremony in the temple in Jerusalem (as described in Acts chapter 21, verse 24).

But Jesus did not keep a Nazirite vow, because he is often found drinking wine – his critics accuse him of drinking far, far too much of it (Matthew chapter 11, verse 19). If he had had long hair, and looked like a Nazirite, we would expect some comment on the discrepancy between how he appeared and what he was doing – the problem would be that he was drinking wine at all. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-35120965

And that is correct. Notice that the Bible shows Jesus did drink wine, but that the Nazirites could not:

19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children. (Matthew 11:19)

1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When either a man or woman consecrates an offering to take the vow of a Nazirite, to separate himself to the Lord, 3 he shall separate himself from wine and similar drink; he shall drink neither vinegar made from wine nor vinegar made from similar drink; neither shall he drink any grape juice, nor eat fresh grapes or raisins. 4 All the days of his separation he shall eat nothing that is produced by the grapevine, from seed to skin. (Numbers 6:1-4)

While some claim that Jesus never made nor drank wine, but only grape juice, consuming anything from grapes was prohibited for Nazirites. Since Jesus did not sin, He certainly was not under a Nazirite vow walking around with long hair.

Sadly, many prefer to accept the Byzantine portrayal of Jesus as Zeus.

Zeus was the head of the pagan deities that Romans and Greeks (though the Greeks called Zeus ‘Jupiter’) worshiped. Christians certainly were not to continue in pagan worship practices by renaming Zeus as Jesus. Nor were they to rename other pagan deities as something else nor incorporate pagan holidays into their form of worship:

20 Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. (1 Corinthians 10:20-21)

You are not honoring Jesus by venerating long haired portrayals of Him that came from paganism.

Nor is Jesus being honored by those who observe the date of a pagan god’s birthday as a Christian holiday–watch Fake News, Jesus, and His Birth (see also What Does the Catholic Church Teach About Christmas and the Holy Days?).

What does the Bible teach about using trees in worship? Have Catholic writers made warnings against Christmas trees?

First, notice that the Bible has a lot of warnings about trees:

2″Do not learn the ways of the nations
or be terrified by signs in the sky,
though the nations are terrified by them.
3 For the customs of the peoples are worthless;
they cut a tree out of the forest,
and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.
4 They adorn it with silver and gold;
they fasten it with hammer and nails
so it will not totter.
5 Like a scarecrow in a melon patch,
their idols cannot speak;
they must be carried
because they cannot walk.
Do not fear them;
they can do no harm
nor can they do any good.” (Jeremiah 10:2-5, NIV).

2 Thus saith our Lord: According to the ways of the Gentiles learn not: and (a) of the signs of heaven, which the heathen fear, be not afraid:
3 Because the laws of the people are vain: because the work of the hand of the artificer hath cut a tree out of the forest with an axe.

29 When the Lord thy God shall have destroyed before thy face the nations, that thou enterest in to possess, and thou shalt possess them, and dwell in their land:
30 beware left thou imitate them, after they be subverted at thy entering in, and thou require their ceremonies, saying: As these nations have worshipped their Gods, so will I also worship.
31 Thou shalt not do in like manner to the Lord thy God. For all the abominations, that our Lord doeth abhor, have they done to their Gods, offering their sons and daughters, and burning them with fire (Deuteronomy 12:29-31, DOT).

While the trees themselves cannot harm us, God says that they cannot do any good.

And nowhere in the Bible is there any hint that trees should be associated with the birth of Jesus Christ. Much promoted related to December 25th is not biblical (watch also Fake News, Jesus, and His Birth).

Catholics used to warn that because of Martin Luther’s promotion of Christmas trees, that this form of idolatry made Protestantism the “Tannenbaum religion” (tannenbaum literally means “fir tree” and is the German term for Christmas tree.

The “Venerable” Cesare Baronius, a Catholic of the 16th century, wrote about a practice of using lights (which are commonly used on Christmas trees):

If the candles which were formerly distributed at the Saturnalia are now identified with the feast of the Purification of our Lady? What, I ask, is there so surprising if holy bishops have allowed certain customs firmly rooted among pagan peoples, and so tenaciously adhered to by them that even after their conversion to Christianity they could not be induced to surrender them, to be transferred to the worship of the true God?” (Baronius, “Annales”, ad ann. 58, n. 77). Thus, Baronius seems to be saying that Saturnalia lights are a pagan practice, yet using them is acceptable. The period of Saturnalia coincides with the Christmas-New Year’s period in modern times.

But even the Rheims‘ version of the New Testament (a Catholic approved translation) states the following about pagan practices:

15. And what agreement with Christ and Belial? or what part hath the faithful with the infidel? 16. And what agreement hath the temple of God with Idols? For you are the temple of the living God. as God saith, Then I will dwell, and walk in them, and will be their God: and they shall be my people. 17. For the which cause, Go out of the midst of them, and separate yourselves. saith our Lord, and touch not the unclean: and I will receive you (2 Corinthians 6:15-17, The Original And True Rheims New Testament Of Anno Domini 1582. So unclean practices associated with idols are prohibited by God. Does not that include celebrating as the idolaters celebrate, like using evergreen trees?

Even the the old Roman Saturnalia and Persian Mithraism (which have been somewhat combined in the Greco-Roman religions) were an adaption of an even earlier mystery religion – the Babylonian mystery cult. The ancient Babylonians celebrated the rebirth of Nimrod as the newborn Tammuz by worshipping an evergreen tree (like the ‘modern’ Christmas tree). The Babylonians also celebrated this rebirth during the time of the winter solstice. Despite biblical admonitions against the use of green trees (Jeremiah 3:12-13), many seem to think that this is fine.

Notice, however, that using green trees as part of worship was condemned by God thousands of years ago:

2 ‘You must completely destroy all the places where the nations you dispossess have served their gods, on high mountains, on hills, under any spreading tree; 3 you must tear down their altars, smash their sacred stones, burn their sacred poles, hack to bits the statues of their gods and obliterate their name from that place. (Deuteronomy 12:2-3, New Jerusalem Bible, NJB, a Catholic translation)

2 Destroy all the places in which the nations, that you shall possess, worshipped their gods upon high mountains, and hills, and under every shady tree: 3 Overthrow their altars, and break down their statues, burn their groves with fire, and break their idols in pieces: destroy their names out of those places. 4 You shall not do so to the Lord your God (Deuteronomy 12:2-4, DOT, a Catholic translation).

16 Beware lest perhaps your heart be deceived, and you depart from our Lord, and serve strange Gods, and adore them (Deuteronomy 11:16, DOT).

¹² So go and shout words towards the north, and say: “Come back, disloyal Israel, Yahweh declares, I shall frown on you no more, since I am merciful, Yahweh declares. I shall not keep my anger for ever.

¹³ Only acknowledge your guilt: how you have rebelled against Yahweh your God, how you have prostituted yourself with the Strangers under every green tree and have not listened to my voice, Yahweh declares. (Jeremiah 3:12-13, NJB)

24 God is spirit, and those who worship must worship in spirit and truth. (John 4:24, NJB)

Catholic translations of the Bible show that spreading shady trees, like evergreens, were not to be part of the worship of the true God–and that people should not be deceived and serve such strange practices. The truth is that Christmas reminds us that people are often unwilling to worship God as He intended, but instead often prefer pagan substitutes that they rationalize as somehow acceptable if they pretend the holiday is about Jesus.

Those who truly believe Jesus’ words, “Human beings live not on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4, NJB) will not celebrate a compromised pagan holiday such as Christmas because it contains practices and symbols (see also What Did the Early Church Teach About Idols and Icons?) warned against in the Bible and was never enjoined upon true believers to practice.

And although many Catholics now have Christmas trees, notice something from the Vatican:

Rome, Dec. 22: Sant Claus, and Christmas trees, have been condemned in an editorial in the Vatican weekly newspaper, “L’Osservatore della Domenica.” The editorial describes Santa Claus as a “monstrous substitute” for the Christ Child, and says that the idea of Santa “is offensive to the faith” and “will not and must not be accepted or tolerated by Christians.” The use of Christmas trees — which have only recently become a part of the Italian Christmas — is condemned as “an attempt to substitute the Crib ….. with a certain feeling of naturalism and paganism.” (http://www.deccanchronicle.com/dc50/vatican-paper-disfavours-santa-claus-684)

No one should be using Christmas trees, Santa Claus, etc. And even some in the Vatican are telling people that.

The Catholics once considered that having a decorated fir tree in one’s house, which of course is not a symbol associated with the birth of Jesus in the Bible, during the Christmas season was a form of idolatry.

However, over time, as the use of trees gained more universal acceptance, those of the Catholic faith decided to no longer decry their use.

The Bible, Church of God sources, and Catholic sources have warned about the use of objects like Christmas trees. As, sadly, expected, US President Barack Obama signed the ‘Countering Disinformation And Propaganda Act’:

Late on Friday, with the US population embracing the upcoming holidays and oblivious of most news emerging from the administration, Obama quietly signed into law the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) which authorizes $611 billion for the military in 2017. …

But while the passage of the NDAA – and the funding of the US military – was hardly a surprise, the biggest news is what was buried deep inside the provisions of the Defense Authortization Act.

Recall that as we reported in early June, “a bill to implement the U.S.’ very own de facto Ministry of Truth had been quietly introduced in Congress. As with any legislation attempting to dodge the public spotlight the Countering Foreign Propaganda and Disinformation Act of 2016 marks a further curtailment of press freedom and another avenue to stultify avenues of accurate information. Introduced by Congressmen Adam Kinzinger and Ted Lieu, H.R. 5181 seeks a “whole-government approach without the bureaucratic restrictions” to counter “foreign disinformation and manipulation,” which they believe threaten the world’s “security and stability.”

Also called the Countering Information Warfare Act of 2016 (S. 2692), when introduced in March by Sen. Rob Portman, the legislation represents a dramatic return to Cold War-era government propaganda battles. “These countries spend vast sums of money on advanced broadcast and digital media capabilities, targeted campaigns, funding of foreign political movements, and other efforts to influence key audiences and populations,” Portman explained, adding that while the U.S. spends a relatively small amount on its Voice of America, the Kremlin provides enormous funding for its news organization, RT.

“Surprisingly,” Portman continued, “there is currently no single U.S. governmental agency or department charged with the national level development, integration and synchronization of whole-of-government strategies to counter foreign propaganda and disinformation.”

Long before the “fake news” meme became a daily topic of extensive conversation on such discredited mainstream portals as CNN and WaPo, H.R. 5181 would task the Secretary of State with coordinating the Secretary of Defense, the Director of National Intelligence, and the Broadcasting Board of Governors to “establish a Center for Information Analysis and Response,” which will pinpoint sources of disinformation, analyze data, and — in true dystopic manner — ‘develop and disseminate’ “fact-based narratives” to counter effrontery propaganda. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-12-24/obama-signs-countering-disinformation-and-propaganda-act-law

I warned about this Act before (see Senate Quietly Passes The “Countering Disinformation And Propaganda Act”).   It even authorizes the Department of State to spend $20 million through September 30, 2018 to “support the Center and provide grants or contracts of financial support to civil society groups, journalists, nongovernmental organizations, federally funded research and development centers, private companies, or academic institutions.”

In the past few years, the first amendment of the USA has gotten trashed by various governments and courts in the USA–and Congress as well. As a reminder, that amendment states:

• First amendment — Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

While the USA is supposed to have freedom of speech, freedom of press, and freedom of religion, that is becoming less and less the case. This Countering Disinformation and Propaganda Act looks to me like a way for the Congress to abridge the freedom of the press and speech.

Plus it likely with authorize paying to tell lies.

In the future, when we in the Continuing Church of God teach the identity and plans of the final King of the North (Daniel 11:29-44), many will consider that to be a ‘conspiracy theory’ or even ‘Russian propaganda.’

Coming just days after the Berlin Christmas market terrorist attack in Berlin, U.S. federal authorities cautioned local law enforcement on Friday to be aware that ISIS supporters have been calling for their sympathizers to attack holiday gatherings in the United States, including churches, a law enforcement official said. …

The FBI is aware of the recent link published online that urges attacks against U.S. churches. As with similar threats, the FBI is tracking this matter while we investigate its credibility,” the FBI said in a statement.

Islamic State sympathizers “continue aspirational calls for attacks on holiday gatherings, including targeting churches,” CNN quoted the bulletin as saying. The FBI and DHS was issued “out of an abundance of caution” following the publication of the ISIS-targeted churches.

The site Vocativ reports that the list was disseminated in a jihadi chat room with the call to attack them:

The Islamic State published the names and addresses of thousands of churches in the United States and called on its adherents to attack them during the holiday season, according to a message posted late-night Wednesday in the group’s “Secrets of Jihadis” social media group.

A user going by the name of “Abu Marya al-Iraqi” posted an Arabic-language message calling “for bloody celebrations in the Christian New Year” and announced the group’s plans to utilize its network of lone wolf attackers to “turn the Christian New Year into a bloody horror movie.”

The list turned up in more than one post, along with the admonition to also spread the hate around to different congregations of people, according to Vocativ:

In another group post, a member summoned “the sons of Islam” to target “churches, well-known hotels, crowded coffee shops, streets, markets and public places,” and shared a list of addresses in the United States, as well as in Canada, France and the Netherlands.

Vocativ did not publish the actual list due to its editorial policies.

But chances are, churches on the ‘kill list’ don’t know they’re on it. Circa News reported that when ISIS disseminated a hit list filled with the names of individual Americans last summer, the FBI never notified the people whose names appeared on the encrypted list. The FBI has not notified the thousands of churches that the ‘Islamic State’ is currently threatening.

Presumably the Islamic State hopes one of its terrorists, or someone upset with some church, will commit terrorism, so it can ‘take credit’ for such horrific acts.

Over in Germany, someone with Islamic ties plowed into people in Berlin killing a dozen and injuring about 50 others (see Terrorists hit Germany: Will the Europeans act against Islam?). This senseless terrorism brings the following scripture to mind that Jesus predicted:

2 …  yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.  3 And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. (John 16:2-3)

Although there were no Church of God Christians killed in the Berlin attack as far as I know, the fact is that Islamic terrorists do not know the Father or Jesus and most certainly are not doing God a service.

It is terrible that terrorists and others believe hate is the solution. They should consider what Jesus taught:

43 Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word.  44 You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.  45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.  46 Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me?  47 He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God. (John 8:43-47)

Israel accuses Obama of anti-Israeli ‘shameful move’ at UN

JERUSALEM (AP) — An Israeli official on Friday accused President Barack Obama of colluding with the Palestinians in a “shameful move against Israel at the U.N.” after learning the White House did not intend to veto a Security Council resolution condemning settlement construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem the day before.

“President Obama and Secretary Kerry are behind this shameful move against Israel at the U.N.,” the official said. “The U.S administration secretly cooked up with the Palestinians an extreme anti-Israeli resolution behind Israel’s back which would be a tail wind for terror and boycotts and effectively make the Western Wall occupied Palestinian territory,” he said calling it “an abandonment of Israel which breaks decades of US policy of protecting Israel at the UN.”

Earlier he said Israel’s prime minister turned to President-elect Donald Trump to help head off the critical U.N. resolution.

Although the U.S. opposes the settlements, it has traditionally used its veto power as a permanent member of the Security Council to block resolutions condemning Israel, saying that disputes between Israel and the Palestinians must be resolved through negotiations. But after eight years of failed peace efforts during the Obama Administration, Israel has expressed concern the outgoing president would take an audacious step to leave his mark on the region. In recent weeks, the White House had been especially secretive about its deliberations.

The Israeli official’s admission marked a final chapter in the icy relations between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Barack Obama over the last eight years, and signaled an era of close ties between Israel and the incoming Trump administration.

The Egyptian-sponsored resolution had demanded that Israel halt settlement activities in occupied territories claimed by the Palestinians and declared that existing settlements “have no legal validity.”

But under heavy Israeli pressure, Egypt called off a planned vote in the Security Council hours before it was to take place. In the diplomatic activity ahead of the postponement, both Netanyahu and Trump issued nearly identical statements urging the U.S. to veto the measure.

US President Barack Obama and his Administration have reportedly taken a lot of steps on their way out–steps that they seemingly hope will complicate matters for Donald Trump, Israel, and the energy sector of the economy.

While Donald Trump  has taken a more noticeably pro-Israeli position than Barack Obama on certain matters (see, for example, NBC: ‘Trump Plan to Move Embassy From Tel Aviv to Jerusalem Poses Challenges’), this does not mean that the USA and Israel will not face problems.

Now, the Palestinians are not thrilled with some of this:

On Friday, Egypt said its president had received a call from Trump in which they both agreed to give the incoming U.S. administration a chance to try and resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The call came hours after Egypt indefinitely postponed the U.N. vote.

A statement from the Egyptian presidency said the two men spoke by phone early Friday and agreed on “the importance of giving a chance for the new American administration to deal in a comprehensive way with the different aspects of the Palestinian issue with the aim of achieving a comprehensive and a final resolution.”

A senior Palestinian official, speaking anonymously according to protocol, said Egypt didn’t consult with the Palestinians about delaying the vote and it was a “complete shock” for them. Egypt represents Arab states on the security council.

Egypt is the first Arab country to make peace with Israel, and the two countries have close security ties in a shared struggle against Islamic militants.

The Palestinian mission to the United Nations said the Security Council will vote later in the day on the resolution condemning Israel’s settlement construction, now sponsored by New Zealand, Malaysia, Senegal and Venezuela.

The U.S., along with the Palestinians and nearly all of the international community, opposes Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem as obstacles to peace. Some 600,000 Israelis live in the two territories, which the Palestinians seek as part of a future independent state. Israel captured both areas in the 1967 Mideast war.

Trump has signaled he will be far more sympathetic to Israel. Washington (CNN) The United States on Friday allowed a UN Security Council resolution condemning Israeli settlement construction to be adopted, defying extraordinary pressure from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government in alliance with President-elect Donald Trump.

The Security Council approved the resolution with 14 votes, with the US abstaining. There was applause in the chamber following the vote.

In the latest and perhaps final chapter in the bitter mistrust between President Barack Obama’s White House and the Israeli government, a senior Israeli official had earlier accused the US and the Palestinians of cooking up the “extreme” resolution behind Israel’s back. …

Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, reacted angrily to the vote and issued a sharp parting shot at the Obama administration’s role.

“It was to be expected that Israel’s greatest ally would act in accordance with the values that we share and that they would have vetoed this disgraceful resolution. I have no doubt that the new US administration and the incoming UN Secretary General will usher in a new era in terms of the UN’s relationship with Israel,” he said.

Trump appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe to discuss the following tweet he sent out yesterday calling for an expanded nuclear arsenal.

When asked by co-host Mika Brzezinski to clarify the tweet, Trump gave a response that she, nor anyone else for that matter, was expecting.

“Let it be an arms race, we will outmatch them at every pass … and outlast them all.”

A spokesman says the president-elect is putting other countries on notice with his tweet calling for greatly expanded U.S. nuclear capability.

Sean Spicer said Friday, “The president isn’t saying we’re going to do this. He said, ‘unless they come to their senses.’ It’s a warning to them that this president isn’t going to sit idly by.”

Yesterday, after Russia’s President Vladimir Putin made comments about strengthening Russia’s nuclear power, Donald Trump tweeted that the U.S. needed to expand and strengthen its nuclear capability.

Then today, he added another militaristic tatement.

Donald Trump is putting the world on notice that the U.S.A. is going to be different than it has been.

It is bold, yet risky, strategy.

It is bold as it is a departure from forty years of US public policy claiming a different direction.  It is bold because it is intended to tell others that they should not consider messing with the USA or else.

It is risky for several reasons, but the main one to mention here is that these are just two comments from Donald Trump that will get those in Europe to believe that he is a problem that Europe needs to deal with.

And Europe will deal with this by attempting to develop their own military capabilities separate from the USA.

Europe is concerned about Donald Trump. BBC had a headline a while back Europe hates Trump. Does it matter? (http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-35702584). Yes, it matters.

Earlier this week, the NATO website published a type of debate regarding Europe’s military. Notice the following that came out prior to Donald Trump’s recent nuclear comments:

Sven Biscop: Only by drastically increasing cooperation, by moving to military integration even, can Europeans hope to acquire the capacity “to act autonomously when and where necessary and with partners wherever possible,” as the European Council put it on 15 December.

Including the objective of “strategic autonomy” in the Global Strategy was prescient. The focus of US strategy had already shifted to Asia and the Pacific, and US President-elect Donald Trump seems set to reinforce this trend. Distrust is also growing …

Notice that Europe wants its OWN ARMY, and a CREDIBLE one. Oh yes, for the time being it also wants NATO. But the time will come when it will no longer feel it needs NATO.

Let me make it perfectly clear: Donald Trump’s statement that, “we will outmatch them at every pass and outlast them all” is WRONG!

The Bible shows that in the end times the power with the strongest military–the USA–will be defeated by a European power:

39 Thus he shall act against the strongest fortresses with a foreign god, which he shall acknowledge, and advance its glory; and he shall cause them to rule over many, and divide the land for gain (Daniel 11:39, NKJV).

The “he” above is the European King of the North power, whereas the USA is the power that has the “strongest fortresses”–this is a prophecy of the defeat of the USA by Europe! When Donald Trump was running for office, I wrote:

Should he actually become President of the United States, his flamboyance and brashness are bound to offend the Europeans, even more than he already has, and ultimately that will not turn out well for the USA (cf. Lamentations 1:1-2; Daniel 11:39).

Donald Trump is not yet in office, however he is already motivating the Europeans to take their own militaristic steps.

The Bible shows that Europe will end up with a ‘great army’ (Daniel 11:25). The Bible also shows that Europe will one day conquer the USA (Daniel 11:39) and others (Daniel 11:40-43).

It was six years ago today, on December 23, 2010, that the Church of God, a Worldwide Association (COGWA) reported the following:

Church of God, a Worldwide Association

Today we are announcing the formation of a new international congregation of believers, the Church of God, a Worldwide Association. Our church organization incorporated on December 23, 2010 and has members, congregations and ministers around the world.

The formation of the Church of God, a Worldwide Association, results from several fundamental disagreements within United Church of God, an International Association. After numerous efforts to engage in biblical resolutions and reconciliation, all efforts failed, and a separation became inevitable.

COGWA split from the United Church of God (UCG).

There was a report from COGWA (titled Timeline for the Establishment of Church of God, a Worldwide Association, dated about January 3, 2011) where it basically states that it did not decide to form until after UCG essentially rejected a 12/4/10 letter and that various discussions did not happen until the week of December 13, 2010. It also says that it was not until 12/20/10 that it was proposed that COGWA be formed, and that this was somewhat based on a 12/17/10 letter from Dennis Luker, where he indicated to certain ministers that they resign and have a “peaceful separation.” Apparently, some at COGWA were concerned how UCG was portraying this. UCG, on the other hand, had been indicating that it has information that suggests that those who left it were part of some long running conspiracy.

What is the truth?

Probably a little of both. There probably are some in COGWA who had long hoped to break-away from UCG, while many there probably only recently made a decision to do so. And UCG probably has some information on the former. But in my view, they are likely to be the two sides of the same ditch. There was also controversy about how a Sabbath matter was handled in Latin America. UCG lost most of its Latin American elders in the summer of 2010, because of that and apparently governance concerns.

Although the name Church of God, a Worldwide Association was possibly only going to be temporary, on January 11, 2011, that name was formally adopted to be continued by its voting elders:

January 11, 2011 – The meetings began as Interim Board President Mike Hanisko called upon Kevin Epps for the opening prayer. Mr.Hanisko then announced the result of the ballot for our church name. Of the 118 ballots cast, 78 chose “Church of God, a Worldwide Association.” So our temporary name has now become our official name.

Since essentially all the top ministry of COGWA was originally ordained by the old Worldwide Church of God (WCG), the selection of COGWA seems logical on its surface.

COGWA made a couple of pronouncements after it started which suggest that it should proclaim the gospel:

(December 23, 2010) Our mission is to preach the gospel of the Kingdom of God to all nations and make disciples from among those whom God calls. Our doctrines are based in the first century teachings of Jesus Christ as practiced by the apostles. Our values are grounded in the biblical record. We will strive to humbly follow this example.

January 10, 2011 – …Ken Treybig then gave a presentation on preaching the gospel. We want to assure everyone that we are committed to doing this he said. Continuing, he noted that we must fulfill the commission Christ gave the Church. How we can do this with a smaller group? Perhaps it will have to be done in a measured way, most likely with an Internet focus, but also with print…

But the priority of gospel proclamation in reality, as opposed to theoretically, has been an issue for COGWA.

In its member letter of 12/06/12, COGWA’s Jim Franks wrote:

We have seen many good things happen in the Church of God, a Worldwide Association, during the past 12 months. Personally, I don’t believe for a moment that any of them happened because of our great planning, wisdom or ability…in 2013 we will be investing more funds into our media efforts for preaching the gospel and into Ministerial Services to provide care for the brethren. Our media budget was increased by 70 percent over the 2012 figure…

That is his take on it.

It took COGWA until late Spring of 2012 to put up its public proclamation website, LifeHopeandTruth.com.

COGWA’s main seven accomplishments since it formed seem to have been:

1. Getting much of the paid US based ministry of the United Church of God to leave and support it.
2. Holding the Feast of Tabernacles in many locations for several years.
3. Getting thousands of former UCG members to support it.
4. Finding and moving to an office in Texas.
5. Not falling into the type of apostasy that happened because of the Tkach WCG/GCI takeover.
6. Starting a few websites, including LifeHopeandTruth.com., which seems to be its most effective.
7. Coming up with a publication called Discern.

COGWA has several prophetic misunderstandings, some of which I have covered here in the past (e.g. Warning: COGWA wrong on Daniel 11:39 and Daniel 9:27).

Just yesterday we noted the resurgence in Bitcoin as China turmoil accelerates, but overnight (as Yuan weakened further), demand for the cryptocurrency has soared once again, sending the price (in USD) to $875 – the highest since Dec 2013. Bitcoin is up over 10% this week alone.

Bitcoin is soaring…As a reminder, back in 2013, the government classified bitcoin as a commodity and not currency, placing it outside the purview of the foreign-exchange regulator, the people said.  That does not mean, however, that China is powerless at limiting bitcoin’s upside.

Several Chinese government bodies including the People’s Bank of China and the financial regulators said in a joint notice that year that bitcoin functioned like a digital commodity without the legal status of a currency. The central bank said in January it is studying the prospects of issuing its own digital currency and aims to roll out a product as soon as possible. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-12-22/bitcoin-soaring

Bitcoin, like the US dollar, is basically backed by nothing. At some point in time, both Bitcoin and the dollar of the USA will be worthless.

As far as what Bitcoin is, here are comments from what Bitcoin’s website says about it:

Bitcoin uses peer-to-peer technology to operate with no central authority or banks; managing transactions and the issuing of bitcoins is carried out collectively by the network. Bitcoin is open-source; its design is public, nobody owns or controls Bitcoin and everyone can take part. Through many of its unique properties, Bitcoin allows exciting uses that could not be covered by any previous payment system.

FWIW, I have never had or traded in Bitcoins or other alternatives like that.

There are some who believe that Bitcoin will become fully regulated/taken over to the point that it will be associated with the ‘mark of the beast.’  Here is one such comment:

If I’m allowed to get Biblical…”Rich man or poor man, free or bond, will not be allowed to buy or sell unless he accepts the mark of the beast.”

Bitcoin is a very smooth end run to achieve that objective.

The “mark of the beast” scripture is from the Book of Revelation which makes the following statements concerning the financial controls of the coming Beast power:

16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.  (Revelation 13:16-18)

The Bible is clear that the time is coming when the Beast power will have implemented some type of strong financial control.  Thus, it is not likely that the hope of being able to buy and sell privately with something like Bitcoin will last. The Beast power will not allow it, and it is likely that the USA government will take more steps to try to either stop it or at least secretly spy on it. But I do not believe that Bitcoin is the ‘Mark of the Beast.’

Anyway, the article at the beginning of this post says that the Chinese are looking at their own version of Bitcoin.

Well, it has been suggested that so should the USA:

In Fall 2014, J.P. Konig wrote a post called “Fedcoin”where he described how the Federal Reserver could create its own digital currency, one in which each of its banks could be a node in its public ledger and its digital dollars would trade at a one-to-one exchange rate with the physical dollar (meaning that one Fedcoin would always be worth one dollar).

A vice-president at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, David Andolfatto, followed up on Konig’s post on his own blog (which has no relationship to the Federal Reserve). With a federal digital currency, he wrote that businesses and consumers “will have all the benefits of bitcoin—low cost, person-to-person transactions to anyone in the world with the appropriate wallet software and access to the internet.” …

The dollar has lost about 96-97% of its value since the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913.

That trend is not only going to continue, but at this point, it’s going to accelerate rapidly. One of the things that’s helped a lot recently is the fact that it’s the world’s reserve currency.

There are about $10 trillion USD outside of the US. This is a big problem because the major export of the United States for the last 30 years has been dollars. The nice Japanese send us Sonys and Toyotas and the nice Germans send us Mercedes and we basically just print up dollars and send it to them. That’s how $10 trillion got outside the US.

It used to be that – just after World War II, all the skyscrapers in the world, 80% of aircraft production in the world, 80% of the automobile production in the world, 75% of the steel production the world, 75% of the stock market value in the world; it was all in America. America was the end all, the be-all. It was the king of the hill. Now, none of these things are true anymore…

Unfortunately the dollar rests on nothing more than confidence because it’s an “I owe you nothing”; I’m a part of a bankrupt government and the US government, make no mistake, is bankrupt. Its liabilities far, far exceed its assets.

Let me state that the Bible tells that at the appointed time of the end (Habakkuk 2:3), foreigner creditors will respond against a highly-indebted nation (Habakkuk 2:6-8).

My thought is this; that understanding that the dollar is unstable as it is, at this point the Fed might try to create an alternative. This is the blockchain technology where every transaction can be tracked from the creation of the Bitcoin itself.

It will have a lot of advantages from the government’s point of view and as much of people seem to like Bitcoin, the public may accept it to start with. …Well, this is a conjecture on my part. But they don’t want people to have cash.

Why? Because they say a cash economy facilitates tax evasion. It facilitates underground transactions. It facilitates drug transactions. It facilitates terrorism where $100 bills are passed around in suitcases and so forth. So they would like to kill all currency.

Now what are you going to do?

You can’t leave money in the bank because you’re getting zero or negative interest rates. The bank itself where you are leaving your money is unstable, illiquid; probably even insolvent. You can’t have cash because the most that they’re going to have in the future are 10s and 20s. So what are you going to do?

I mean, you’re really trapped at this point. …

Well, it’s an extremely bad idea because it discourages people from saving, and saving is what builds capital. So it’s very destructive for the economy, actually for civilization itself over the long run.

But the idea is that they’re trying to encourage people to consume more. It’s actually bizarre… They’re trying to encourage people to save less and consume more, even though the way you become wealthy, whether you’re an individual or company or country, is by producing more and consuming less.

So it’s a – it’s a different – it’s a desperate effort to keep the current order of things from collapsing. But the more of this type of thing they do, the more certain the collapse becomes and the more devastating it’ll be when it does unfold, and I think we’re right on the edge of it now. …

Well, right now those dollars are a liability of the bank… The Fedcoin is different because it’s not a liability of a commercial bank; it’s a direct liability of the Federal Reserve… number one.

Number two; it’s going to use blockchain technology which makes it totally trackable unlike dollars today. So those are two huge differences. It’s going to be sold as a safety thing because blockchain is much harder to hack than conventional digital technology. …

To start with, I suspect it’s going to be a parallel currency. Perhaps usable just within the U.S. which, in effect, would be a form of foreign exchange controls even more effective than the inability of Americans to open up foreign bank and brokerage accounts today. But in the event of a serious problem with the dollar, for a lot of reasons, or the banking system, for a lot of reasons, it provides a parallel currency; an alternative directly dealing with the issuer itself. I think it’s a near certainty that they’re going to do something like this and soon. …

Since it’s already been legitimized, the idea of Bitcoin and blockchain technology, I think the next step is that you’re going to find the Federal Reserve itself offering Fedcoin, which is very convenient for them because with that, they can designate exactly how those Fedcoins can be spent.

They know exactly who gets them, what they’re used for, and so forth. If there is ever a serious problem with the dollar, for instance with the trillions of dollars outside the US flooding back into the US, it can act as an alternative currency which, at least for a while, will have some semblance of confidence. …

They’ve used all the monetary tools that they know exist. This is the only thing that I can think of to further shore things up.

They’ve been talking about it. Nobody’s been listening. It’s an outrageous idea, but it’s going to happen. It gives the government more control and that’s what the government needs and wants and thinks is a good thing quite frankly. …

In Canada, they have something called Project Jasper, which is their own version of this. The Chinese have announced that they’re planning on a blockchain type currency, the same thing… They have said that they wanna see this happen “as soon as possible.” The British have made the announcement along these lines.

This is seen as a worldwide solution; part of the globalist solution to problems.

You don’t see this widely reported in the media, but it’s happening all around us at this point. So it’s gonna happen here. Look, in June 2016, this year, Janet Yellen and dozens of other central bankers met with the top experts in the blockchain area, including the people that are in back of Bitcoin at this point. While I do not believe that the US dollar is about to collapse now or that most Americans currently want a chip in their hands, the idea that the USA may have ‘Fedcoin’ or some other alternative currency is not out-of-the-question.

The USA will continue to play games with its debt and something like Fedcoin or some other odd ‘solution’ (see, for example, USA to run out of money next month? Platinum coins seriously considered as an option?) that will not work forever may well be tried.

Though not now, the time is coming that the USA dollar will be totally worthless (except perhaps to collectors or as a fuel source). And yes, the Bible tells that for a time gold will be worthless, but that does not happen until years after the demise of the US dollar. But placing too much confidence in gold, currencies, or alternatives like Bitcoin will not truly save anyone (cf. 1 Peter 1:7). Yet, true repentance and turning to the Jesus of the Bible can.

The increased debt of the USA, as well as its increasing financial and other surveillance, seem to be factors in the popularity of alternatives like Bitcoin–but financial privacy is not something that the coming Beast power will support (cf. Revelation 13:16-18).

Although the USA is not likely to repent to prevent this nationally, nor can Bitcoin or ‘Fedcoin’ prevent it, if you are being called, personally you can repent as well as physically take steps before the dollar-based economic systems collapses.
