Scientists see the universe expanding faster than many had thought

The universe could be expanding faster than many scientists thought:

WASHINGTON — Astronomers thought they had a handle on how the universe ticks, but the cosmos may be toying with them.

A team of astronomers has calculated that the universe seems to be expanding faster than what scientists previously figured. If the new research is right, then science’s basic understanding of what’s been happening to the universe in the past 13.8 billion years after the Big Bang could be just a bit off kilter.

“This is really an end-to-end test the universe gives us; it’s sort of our final exam,” said Nobel laureate and study lead author Adam Riess of the Space Telescope Science Institute . “We get a D-plus probably because things don’t match up.”

Astronomers used the Hubble Space Telescope to measure the distance of 2,400 stars to calculate the rate the universe is expanding. The number they came up with is 5 to 9 percent faster than other scientifically accepted measurements that calculate the expansion rate based on cosmic background radiation from 380,000 years after the Big Bang. The new study was released Thursday by NASA and is to be published in The Astrophysical Journal.

Either one set of calculations is wrong – which outside scientists say is the most likely possibility, though they can’t find something wrong yet – or the expansion rate has speeded up since 13.8 billion years ago. And if that’s the case, as Riess advocates, then our understanding of the universe is not quite right. June 3, 2016 http://www.cbsnews.com/news/is-the-universe-expanding-even-faster-than-we-thought-big-bang-theory/

Despite the confidence that the media and certain scientists portray about ‘scientific knowledge,’ much of it is shakier than the public is often led to believe.

What if science appears to contradict the Bible?

20 … avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. (1 Timothy 6:20-21, KJV)

4 … let God be true but every man a liar. (Romans 3:4, NKJV the rest of this article)

Now, related to the universe, notice something from back in 2013:

Data Shows Universe Could Collapse Any Minute

Our universe is at even greater risk of collapse than has been previously thought, according physicists in Denmark.

Not only are the scientists predicting the end of the world… but the end of the universe!

The prediction that the universe will collapse and compress into a small hard ball isn’t something new. Physicists have been predicting a calamity for a long time.

Does this mean we should immediately cancel any long-term plans? The Danish scientists really don’t know when the universe will collapse. They say it could happen tomorrow–or a billion years from now.

Writing in the Journal of High Energy Physics, the University of Southern Denmark physicists said new calculations led them to speculate there will be a sudden and drastic change within the forces of the universe one day that will make every atom in the universe become enormously heavy.

Everything, from the tiniest grain of soil to all of the planets within our solar system to every galaxy contained within the universe, will suddenly become billions and billions of times heavier than they are now.

The theory holds that the sudden increase in weight will force all of the material within the universe to compress into a “small, super-hot heavy ball” which will cause the end of the universe as we know it. http://blogs.voanews.com/science-world/2013/12/16/data-shows-universe-could-collapse-any-minute/

Should any Christian have believed that?

No!

On December 18, 2013, I posted the following here as my comments related to those Danish ‘scientists’:

Is that possible?

According to the Bible the universe cannot collapse now. Notice the following:

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. (Romans 8:18-23)

The universe (the “creation” above) is not going away now despite some signs of stresses. Scientists who ignore such scriptures have come to a wrong conclusion.

Notice the following about Jesus:

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. (Colossians 1:15-18)

Jesus has control, random events are not about to destroy the universe. (Thiel B. Danish scientists conclude that the universe could collapse any minute now–is that really possible? December 18, 2013)

Consider also the following passage from the Book of Hebrews:

6 But one testified in a certain place, saying: “What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him? 7 You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands. 8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”

For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.

10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. (Hebrews 2:6-10)

So, the understand that the entire universe was made for humankind, but is not yet under human subjection, but will be first under Jesus. And then, later under humankind.

So, resurrected humans will at some time rule all the planets of the universe. It will not collapse.

But there is more. Notice something else that the Bible teaches:

33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end. (Luke 1:33)

6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end…(Isaiah 9:6-7)

This seems to mean that either the physical dimensions of Christ’s kingdom will always be increasing (hence perhaps more and more planets, stars, and galaxies) and/or their will a continual increase in the number of beings in Christ’s kingdom.

An expansion of the universe will continue. And at whatever pace God decides.

Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Yemen, Libya, Maldives, and Egypt cut off Qatar: A prelude to a coming caliphate?

Battle involving 4th caliphate

COGwriter

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates have taken a tough stand against the nation of Qatar:

June 5, 2017

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt each announced Monday the cutting of diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism.

The countries made the separate moves in short succession, saying they would withdraw their diplomatic staff from Qatar and cut air and sea traffic to the country.

Airlines in the region, including Saudia, Emirates and Etihad all said they would halt flights to Qatar, while Qatar Airways announced a suspension of flights to Saudi Arabia.

Yemen later joined in cutting off relations with Qatar.

Saudi Arabia, which leads a coalition of nations fighting in support of Yemen’s government, also said Qatar’s forces would be withdrawn from that fight.

The Saudi state-owned SPA news agency said Qatar “embraces multiple terrorist and sectarian groups aimed at disturbing stability in the region, including the Muslim Brotherhood, ISIS and al-Qaida, and promotes the message and schemes of these groups through their media constantly.”

Qatar’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said the measures are “unjustified and are based on baseless and unfounded allegations.”

“Qatar has been exposed to an instigation campaign based on allegations that amounted to absolute fabrications, which proves that there are premeditated intentions to cause damage to the state,” the ministry said in a statement. It further accused the nations involved of seeking to impose “guardianship” over Qatar. … The U.S. military’s Central Command maintains a large presence at the al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar. https://www.voanews.com/a/saudi-arabia-egypt-uae-bahrain-cut-ties-with-qatar/3887058.html

5 June 2017

A number of Arab countries including Saudi Arabia and Egypt have cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing it of destabilising the region.

They say Qatar backs militant groups including so-called Islamic State (IS) and al-Qaeda, which Qatar denies.

The Saudi state news agency SPA said Riyadh had closed its borders, severing land, sea and air contact with the tiny peninsula of oil-rich Qatar.

Qatar called the decision “unjustified” and with “no basis in fact”.

The unprecedented move is seen as a major split between powerful Gulf countries, who are also close US allies.

It comes amid heightened tensions between Gulf countries and their near-neighbour, Iran. The Saudi statement accused Qatar of collaborating with “Iranian-backed terrorist groups” in its restive eastern region of Qatif and in Bahrain. …

While Qatar has joined the US coalition against IS, the Qatari government has repeatedly denied accusations from Iraq’s Shia leaders that it provided financial support to IS.

Wealthy individuals in the emirate are believed to have made donations and the government has given money and weapons to hardline Islamist groups in Syria. Qatar is also accused of having links to a group formerly known as the Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda affiliate.

The SPA statement accused Qatar of backing these groups, as well as the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood – banned in Gulf countries as a terrorist organisation – and that it “promotes the message and schemes of these groups through their media constantly”.

Saudi Arabia itself is a key backer of Islamist rebels, including hardline jihadist groups, in Syria. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-40155829

Qatar paid up to $1bn to release members of the Gulf state’s royal family who were kidnapped in Iraq while on a hunting trip, according to people involved in the hostage deal — one of the triggers behind Gulf states’ dramatic decision to cut ties with Doha. Commanders of militant groups and government officials in the region told the Financial Times that Doha spent the money in a transaction that secured the release of 26 members of a Qatari falconry party in southern Iraq and about 50 militants captured by jihadis in Syria. By their telling, Qatar paid off two of the most frequently blacklisted forces of the Middle East in one fell swoop: an al-Qaeda affiliate fighting in Syria and Iranian security officials. The deal, which was concluded in April, heightened concerns among Qatar’s neighbours about the small gas-rich state’s role in a region plagued by conflict and bitter rivalries. https://www.ft.com/content/dd033082-49e9-11e7-a3f4-c742b9791d43

June 5, 2017

The island nation of Maldives announced later Monday that it, too, would cut ties to Qatar.

For now, however, the most immediate effects might be felt by the 2.24 million people living in Qatar. After the announcement early Monday by the four Arab nations that they would cut air, sea and land links with Qatar, images spread on social media of empty supermarket shelves in that country — an apparent sign that shoppers were stocking up in the event of shortages. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2017/06/05/qatar-could-face-a-food-crisis-in-spat-with-arab-neighbors/?utm_term=.4af27fbc95c3

So, we are seeing another attempt by major Arab nations to deal with one or more issues in their region.

Back in late 2015, Saudi Arabia announced the formation of a predominantly Islamic 34 nation military coalition (see ‘Saudi Arabia Announces 34-Nation Islamic Alliance Against Terrorism’ to Protect the ‘Islamic Nation’: Is the King of the South starting to form?). And this included Egypt.

Then a couple of months later, what was billed as the world’s largest military exercise was conducted in Saudi Arabia, and it included Egyptian and other troops (see World’s largest military exercise taking place in Saudi Arabia–a prelude to the King of the South?).

The Bible tells of the rise of a power in this region of the world. The Arabs might call it a caliphate, but the Bible refers to the leader as the King of the South.

Notice both a Protestant and a Catholic translation of some of the passages in Daniel related to a coming King of the South:

40 “In the end times the southern king will attack him. The northern king will rush at him like a storm with chariots, horses, and many ships. He will invade countries, overwhelm them, and pass through their land. 41 He will invade the beautiful land, and tens of thousands will be defeated. But Edom, Moab, and the leaders of the Ammonites will escape from his power. 42 He will use his power against many countries. Even Egypt will not escape. 43 He will control gold and silver treasures and all Egypt’s treasuries. Libya and Sudan will surrender to him. (GOD’S WORD Translation)

40 ‘When the time comes for the End, the king of the south will try conclusions with him; but the king of the north will come storming down on him with chariots, cavalry, and a large fleet. He will invade countries, overrun them and drive on. 41 He will invade the Land of Splendour, and many will fall; but Edom, Moab, and what remains of the sons of Ammon will escape him. 42 ‘He will reach out to attack countries: Egypt will not escape him. 43 The gold and silver treasures and all the valuables of Egypt will lie in his power. Libyans and Cushites will be at his feet: (Daniel 11:40-43, New Jerusalem Bible)

Notice that the time will come when the King of the South will lead a major military force against the final King of the North. While the final King of the South has not yet formed, and will one day fail, steps to form the biblically-prophesied confederation are taking place.

While some believe the prophecies in Daniel 11:40-43 have been fulfilled and do not have future application, this view is in error.

Notice that the Bible shows, in another place, that a time is coming when the confederation of Arabs and Egypt will be destroyed and it is in the FUTURE as it is near the day of the LORD:

1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 “Son of man, prophesy and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says:

“‘Wail and say, “Alas for that day!” 3 For the day is near, the day of the LORD is near- a day of clouds, a time of doom for the nations. 4 A sword will come against Egypt, and anguish will come upon Cush. When the slain fall in Egypt, her wealth will be carried away and her foundations torn down.

5 Cush and Put, Lydia and all Arabia, Libya and the people of the covenant land will fall by the sword along with Egypt.

6 “‘This is what the LORD says:

“‘The allies of Egypt will fall and her proud strength will fail. From Migdol to Aswan they will fall by the sword within her, declares the Sovereign LORD. 7 “‘They will be desolate among desolate lands, and their cities will lie among ruined cities. 8 Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I set fire to Egypt and all her helpers are crushed.

9 “‘On that day messengers will go out from me in ships to frighten Cush out of her complacency. Anguish will take hold of them on the day of Egypt’s doom, for it is sure to come (Ezekiel 30:1-9, NIV).

And this seems to be the destruction of the King of the South by the King of the North in Daniel 11:40-43 as Ezekiel 30:4-5 sound very much like Daniel 11:42-43.

The coming Arab-dominated confederation is prophesied to fail, but will form.

Today’s move against Qatar is not only intended as a move against Iran and terror, it is a move towards more unity  in the region. A region that will support a coming prophesied confederation.

Israel’s ‘Six-Day War’ and Protestant views on Israel in Prophecy

Israeli’s examine destroyed Egyptian aircraft in 1967 (יחזקאל (חזי) רחמים)

COGwriter

Today is the 50th anniversary of the start of the famous ‘Six-Day War’:

5 June 2017

The 1967 Six-Day War and its difficult legacy

The Six-Day War began 50 years ago: Israel attacked three of its Arab neighbors, who had threatened to annihilate the Jewish state. Effects of Israel’s victory are still felt in the region today.

“It felt like an existential threat to Israel,” Moshe Milo said about the time right before the war broke out.

Milo was 23 years old at the time and a radio operator for an Israeli paratroopers unit.

In the weeks leading up to the Six-Day War, Egypt’s President Gamal Abdel Nasser had threatened to wipe Israel off the map. Similar comments were made in Syria. The two Arab states had already fought two wars with Israel in 1948 and 1956. In 1967, Nasser posted his troops on the Sinai Peninsula and blocked the Straits of Tiran for Israeli ships.

On the morning of June 5, 1967, Israel’s air force launched a surprise attack targeting the troops in the Sinai. Milo was ready to march against the Egyptians on the southern front, “but suddenly our mission was changed and we were on our way to Jerusalem.”

Capturing the Western Wall

Fifty years later, Moshe Milo and Yoram Zamosch quickly walked along the Al-Wad Street in old Jerusalem’s Muslim district. Zamosch had been the young commander of Milo’s unit in 1967. Together, they had stormed the Lions’ Gate and entered the old town, which had been under Jordan’s control since 1948. The Six-Day War has left a lasting impression on the former comrades.

“Up until the war, we were considered a persecuted, weak people. The Holocaust had happened just 25 years ago,” Zamosch said. “And then we managed to re-take the Western Wall. We were back, standing on our own feet.” http://www.dw.com/en/the-1967-six-day-war-and-its-difficult-legacy/a-39117590

June 5, 2017

Fifty years ago today, on June 5, 1967, we awoke to the news that the war we had dreaded was begun—and decided. …

In April, there had been conflict with Syria over the headwaters of the Jordan River; in May, President Nasser, of Egypt, brandishing new Soviet arms and claiming to support Syria, expelled United Nations peacekeepers from the Sinai and closed the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping. By early June, Jordan’s King Hussein had thrown in with Egypt. We knew that the Israeli military would strike. I heard that students were contacting the Israeli consulate and volunteering—not to fight but to help with the summer harvest. On June 3rd, I surprised myself by doing the same. On the morning of the 5th, the Israeli Air Force destroyed the Egyptian Air Force on the ground. The rest, as my father put it, with uncharacteristic swagger, would be “a mopping-up operation.” Unopposed in the skies, Israel conquered Jerusalem on the 7th and rolled into the West Bank. By the 11th, it had taken the Golan Heights, from where Syrians had fired on the Hula Valley. I got to Tel Aviv on June 14th, to work, but mainly to celebrate.

Nothing prepared me for a country so close to general euphoria. http://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/how-the-six-day-war-changed-israels-mind

The Palestinians and various others have a view that is definitely other than euphoric about this. Notice also the following:

June 5, 2017

Fifty years ago this week, Israel fended off attacks by its Arab neighbors in the lightning quick Six-Day War and captured territory beyond its original borders — some still occupied by the military today.

The land in dispute is mainly comprised of the West Bank, which Palestinians want for a future independent state. It extends west of the “Green Line,” the 1948 demarcation between Israel and the Arab states it fought for independence, and named for the color of ink used to outline the Jewish state’s borders on a flimsy paper map.

The Green Line was supposed to be temporary, with final borders to be worked out in the future. Instead, in the half-century since the line was breached by the June 5-10, 1967, conflict, the Green Line represents a major divide over the terms of a lasting Mideast peace.

For Palestinians and some Israelis, the only viable solution to the conflict with Israel is to use the Green Line as the outline of a future Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

But Israel’s government, which insists that a united Jerusalem remain its capital, is unwilling to dismantle all the settlements where 500,000 Israeli Jews now live west of the Green Line on lands that were ruled by Jordan and populated by Palestinians between 1948 and 1967. It wants to negotiate new borders, which Palestinians might accept if the plan includes land swaps.

A visit to three sites along the Green Line reveals how blurred the Green Line has become 50 years after the war. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2017/06/05/israels-six-day-war-has-become-50-year-conflict/102317656/

The situation between the Palestinians and Israel remains tense and often dangerous. Israel has more territory as the result of the Six-Day War, but still is facing problems.

Some believe that the taking of the rest of Jerusalem in 1967 has prophetic ramifications and that would seem to be so.

But some Protestants take the situation with Israel much further. They misunderstand the following statements from Jesus:

32 “Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.  33 So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near — at the doors!   34 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. (Matthew 24:32-34)

Various Protestants believe that the declaration of the State of Israel in 1947 or its official existence in 1948 mark the beginning of the generation that Jesus spoke of in the Gospels.

How Much Time Does the ‘Fig Tree Generation’ Have Left?

Throughout the world a generation is held to be a period of between 25 and 75 years. The lowest number is derived from the idea that when one generation has spawned its offspring, the average age of those having children is about 25. The larger number is used by those who think that a generation is the entire lifetime of individuals. Nursing homes are the proof that some can go beyond the 75 year old mark, but a visit to the obits pages of any newspaper will show that on average most of us check out at around 70-75 years of age. Sorry, modern medicine.

The biblical record uses the longer number of years both in prophecy and in general. The figure used in scripture is often shaved by five years and is consistently shortened to 70 years. One example of this is found in Psalm 90: 10.

“The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.”

All we need to know now is when did the ‘Fig Tree Generation begin. There are only two possibilities. One is at the rebirth of Israel in 1948. Because Jerusalem, the spiritual capital of Israel, plays into all last days prophecy the year Israel took back that city in the six day war of 1967 is thought to be the starting date. Using either date provides some stunning conclusions when the simplest math formula is applied.

Let’s Do the Math

If the date of 1948 is used then we have 65 years from 1948 to the present (2013) which leaves five years to go until the fulfillment of all prophecy and the return of the Lord.

If we start at 1967, 46 years have passed which leaves 24 years to go to reach the end of the Fig Tree generation. http://www.renewamerica.com/columns/bresciani/130913

There is NO WAY that Jesus will return in 2018. The signs in Matthew 24 simply have not been fulfilled enough (for some details, check out the article When Will the Great Tribulation Begin?).

Here is something from another Protestant:

2017 to 2024 Tribulation Theory

November 19, 2015

This is a theory regarding the Tribulation beginning in Fall 2017 and ending in Fall 2024. …

If the UN mandate for the reestablishment of Israel in 1947 and the rebirth of Israel in 1948 are a beginning point of sorts, then 2017 and 2018 have been the big years to watch for all along.  Had 2014 or 2015 been the beginning of the Tribulation, then the perfect symmetry of 70 years (a Biblical generation according to Psalm 90:10) would have fallen around the time of the Abomination of Desolation… the time of antichrist’s greatest power, rather than the time of Christ coming for His Church.  The antichrist is not the star of the show.  Jesus is. …

Here is a rundown of reasons the Tribulation could begin in 2017:

1.) It is 70 years from the United Nations’ decree to reestablish Israel (Resolution 181).

2.) It is a complete Jubilee-cycle from the 1967 conquest of Jerusalem (1967 + 49 + Jubilee year = 2017).

3.) If the Tribulation starts in Fall 2017, then that is in the 70th Jewish year from the rebirth of Israel in 1948.  Alternatively, it is in the 69th biblical year from the rebirth of Israel, which would be a powerful symbol of the fact that the world would be about to enter Daniel’s 70th week.

4.) 2017 to 2024 offers the only timeline in recent memory where the Tribulation of 2550 days could begin unquestionably on a Fall Feast date and end on a Fall Feast date. …

9.) 12th-century Rabbi Judah Ben Samuel predicted 2017 as the year of Messiah. …

12.) The Shemitah year may actually be 2016/2017.  Though Jonathan Cahn found an amazing pattern, he was looking at when economic crashes began, not when they reached their worst point.  In the previous two cycles, the crashes reached their worst points in 2009 and 2002, respectively, not 2008 and 2001.  According to what many think is a more accurate Shemitah and Jubilee cycle, the next Shemitah year is actually 2016/2017 and the next Jubilee year is 2017/2018. …

13.) 2017 is 50 years (a full jubilee cycle) from 1967 (conquest of Jerusalem), 70 years (a complete generation) from 1947 (decree to reestablish Israel), 100 years ( two complete jubilee cycles) from 1917 (Balfour declaration), and 120 years (see Genesis 6:3) from 1897 (First Zionist Congress, the first Jewish government since 70 AD). http://www.unsealed.org/2015/11/2017-to-2024-tribulation-theory.html accesseed 11/29/16

No, the Great Tribulation cannot start in 2017. For more information on that, check out the video: Will the Great Tribulation Start in 2017?

Here are some statements from the famous Protestant prophecy-writer Hal Lindsey:

I believe that the Bible indicates that many of those of the generation that saw Israel become a nation in 1948 will still be alive at the coming of the Lord. http://www.hallindsey.com/hlr-5-1-2015/
In Jesus, we see the answer to the dilemma.  He came once to die for our sins.  But He’s coming again to rule and reign.  To deny it is to call Him a liar because He talked at length about His second coming and the signs that would surround it.
The greatest of those signs is the re-establishment of the nation of Israel.  That happened in 1948.  In 1967, Israel retook Jerusalem as its eternal capital.  In other words, everything is happening as God said it would happen at the end of this age. http://www.hallindsey.com/ww-7-25-2015/
Jesus came to Jerusalem at the climax of His life and ministry.  He showed both His frustration and love for the city and its people when He said, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her!  How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.” (Matthew 23:37 NASB)
They rejected Jesus just as Daniel and the other prophets predicted.  God used that very rejection for our salvation.  Romans 11:11 says, “By their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles.”
But that did not negate God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and others.  Those promises began to be fulfilled in the 19th century when Jews started returning to the land in large numbers.  They were returning to the place deeded to them by God Himself — the Promised Land.  That led to the rebirth of Israel as a nation in 1948.  They would regain control of Jerusalem in 1967.
According to scripture, their return to the land portends another return — the return of Jesus.  Peace is coming to Jerusalem — peace to “The City of Peace.” http://www.hallindsey.com/ww-4-17-2017/

Like many others, Hal Lindsey seems to believe that the nation of Jews called Israel is ALL OF ISRAEL, along with Jews scattered around the world. As shown by other scriptures (e.g. Genesis 48:11,15-16,19-20; cf. 1 Chronicles 5:1-2), the name Israel was to be placed on the descendants of Joseph.

Yet he, and many others, overlook the fact that it was prophesied that most would call the Jews ‘Israel’:

1 Hear this, O house of Jacob,
Who are called by the name of Israel,
And have come forth from the wellsprings of Judah (Isaiah 48:1)

This has happened today, the Jews are considered to be Israel, and others not. Therefore, most overlook the scriptures that teach that there are other tribes of Israel in other places (e.g. James 1:1). The 19th century return of Jews to the area of ancient Judea is not the fulfillment of prophecy like Hal Lindsey claims.

The formation of the small nation of Israel, while important, has frequently been misunderstood.

Although this formation has prophetic relevance, it was not the ‘fig tree’ that many Protestant prophetic watchers have claimed as the start of the final generation (Mark 13:28-30). If we grant that a generation would last for up to 70 years (cf. Psalm 90:10), Jesus would need to return by 2018 for 1948 to be the starting point for “this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place” (Matthew 24:34; Mark 13:30).

Furthermore, the formation of Israel is NOT the final prophesied regathering. Here is some of what the late Pastor General of the old Worldwide Church of God, Herbert W. Armstrong wrote about this in 1948:

Not Prophesied Regathering

In God’s own due time the Jews are to be released from their persecutions, their harrowing trials, and be reestablished within Palestine IN PEACE! But this is not that prophesied regathering of Israel! This is merely a blundering human effort to do for themselves, before the time, what they will have to wait for God to do for them. And this present movement, setting up a nation of Jews and calling it “ISRAEL,” can only lead to more bloodshed and more troubles!

In the first place, the new nation that has declared itself in Palestine is not Israel at all—it is only a part of JUDAH! When the great prophesied exodus occurs, it will be Israel and Judah together. And they will not do it in their own defiant, embittered power and strength; they will be taken back, by Christ after His coming, from a condition of slavery and from the land of their enemies (see Ezek. 39:25-27). At that time they will take captive their captors and rule over those who had been ruling over them (Isa. 14:1-3—see especially Moffatt translation; Jer. 30:16; 31:11). It will be a greater exodus than the typical one under Moses—this one will be under CHRIST at His return! (Jer. 23:7-8.) They will go back to Palestine weeping, confessing their sins, loathing themselves for having ignored and transgressed against God, seeking the MESSIAH whom they have rejected (Jer. 50:4-5; Ezek. 20:34-43). They will then be converted, changed from sinners into Spirit-filled people living by God’s laws (Jer. 50:19-20; Ezek. 36:24-28). The Jews in Palestine, and this new nation, fulfill NONE of those prophecies! But what a strange dilemma!

The Jews Are Not Israel!

Most people today do not seem to know that the Jews are not Israel, but only a part of Judah. The first place in the Bible where the word “Jews” occurs, the Jews are at war against ISRAEL (II Kings 16:6). Four whole books of the Bible are devoted to showing the historic difference between the two nations Israel and Judah. There were twelve tribes of Israel, originally. But after Solomon died, the nation ISRAEL rejected her king, Rehoboam, son of Solomon, and made Jeroboam, of the tribe of Ephraim, king. Then the one tribe of Judah split off from the nation Israel and formed a NEW NATION of their own (just as they are trying to do again today), in order to retain Rehoboam as king. This new nation was called the kingdom of JUDAH. The tribe of Benjamin and a large portion of Levi then joined Judah, leaving the TEN TRIBES in the nation ISRAEL. (Armstrong HW. Plain Truth, June 1948)

And he was correct. The nation of Israel does not represent all the tribes of Israel. Notice also the following prophecies:

18 “In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given as an inheritance to your fathers. (Jeremiah 3:18)

7 For thus says the Lord: “Sing with gladness for Jacob, And shout among the chief of the nations; Proclaim, give praise, and say, ‘O Lord, save Your people, The remnant of Israel!’ 8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth, Among them the blind and the lame, The woman with child And the one who labors with child, together; A great throng shall return there. 9 They shall come with weeping, And with supplications I will lead them. I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters, In a straight way in which they shall not stumble; For I am a Father to Israel, And Ephraim is My firstborn. 10 “Hear the word of the Lord, O nations, And declare it in the isles afar off, and say, ‘He who scattered Israel will gather him, And keep him as a shepherd does his flock.’ (Jeremiah 31:7-10)

That has NOT been fulfilled. The ‘land of the north’ has to do with end time Babylonian Europe (cf. Zechariah 2:6-7).

Because certain ones do not understand that the nation called Israel is not all Israel, they have also misunderstood the timing of prophecies such as Ezekiel 38. For more on the identity of the tribes of Israel, check out the article Who are the 12 Tribes of Israel?

I would add that Jesus said certain events would happen during a generation (Matthew 24:34), and unless a generation is to exceed 70 years, the formation of Israel in 1948 was not the start of the last generation. For more information on that, check out the video: Israel, 1948, and Prophecy.

As far as the Great Tribulation goes, it will not start in 2017, despite theories of some. For more information on that, check out the video: Will the Great Tribulation Start in 2017?

All that being said, many in Israel are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the start of the Six-Day War and most of the Palestinians are not happy with what happened 50 years ago–the Palestinians seem to be prophesied to be involved in terror (see Why Terrorism? Is Terrorism Prophesied?).

Prophetically, the situation in Jerusalem will change and one day, the Jews will lose lands to the Palestinians. For some details, check out the article: Gaza and the Palestinians in Bible Prophecy.

Two Boniface pontiffs

Pope Boniface VIII in the Vatican (May 2004)

COGwriter

The Catholic saint Boniface (Latin: Bonifacius; c. 680 – June 5, 754), is known as the Apostle of the Germans. He was born Winfrid, Wynfrith, or Wynfryth possibly at Crediton in the kingdom of Wessex (now in Devon, England). He is the patron saint of Germany and the first archbishop of Mainz.

His “feast day” is celebrated on June 5 in the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran Church, and the Anglican Communion but on December 19 in the Eastern Orthodox Church.

But I would like to focus on one of his namesakes, Pope Boniface VIII. I first became familiar with this pontiff upon a trip to the Vatican in 2004. My wife took a photo of his casket, and that got me to look more into his background.

Partially because of political problems in Europe with French King Philip, Pope Boniface VIII took a bizarre and highly overreaching step. In 1302, he issued what is known as the bull Unam Sanctum that claimed:

We are obliged by the faith to believe and to hold—and we do firmly believe and sincerely confess—that there is one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church and that outside this Church there is neither salvation nor remission of sins

Therefore, if the Greeks or others say that they are not committed to Peter and his successors, they necessarily confess that they are not Christ’s sheep…

…in this Church and in her power are two swords…Both are in the power of the Church, the spiritual sword and the material. But the latter is to be used for the Church, the former by her; the former by the priest, the latter by kings and captains but at the will of the priest…

Furthermore, we declare, state, define, and pronounce that it is altogether necessary for salvation for every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff. (As cited in Bettenson H, ed., Documents of the Christian Church. London: Oxford University Press, 1943, pp. 126-127).

Notice that his position was quite definite. I mention that because I believe that many within the Vatican now, including Pope Francis, have a different view and will compromise in many, many ways, to ultimately entice most of the Orthodox (called the Greeks above) and others into a revised ecumenical faith that will call itself “Catholic.”

As his pronouncement was made as a matter of “faith” was Pope Boniface VIII infallible when he published it? If so, then this seems to disagree with positions take by some of the later popes, as well as the Bible (cf. Acts 4:10,12).

Notice what the Catholic writer E. Duffy wrote:

Boniface is a mysterious man, proud, ambitious fierce…It was Boniface who declared the first Jubilee or Holy Year in 1300, when tens of thousands of pilgrims converged on Rome to gain indulgences, adding enormously to the prestige of the papacy…(and in the process enriching the Roman basilicas, where the sacristans were said to have had to scoop in pilgrim offerings with rakes). This promise of ‘full and copious pardon’ to all who visited Peter and the Lateran after confessing their sins was the most spectacular exercise of power of the keys since Urban II issued the first Crusade Indulgence…

Boniface…displayed some of the worst traits of clerical careerism, enriching his relatives at the expense of the Church, and waging a relentless was against family’s traditional rivals. (Duffy, Eamon. Saints & Sinners: A History of the Popes. Yale University Press, New Haven (CT), 2002, p. 160)

Other writers have also mentioned his less than saintly behavior.

A former Catholic priest wrote:

Few popes ever enriched their kin as much as Boniface did…A libertine, he once had a married woman and her daughter as his mistresses. (De Rosa P. Vicars of Christ: The Dark Side of the Papacy. Poolberg Press, Dublin, 2000, p. 75)

A current Catholic priest and scholar wrote:

Boniface VIII…Other popes were more inept and more corrupt, but none made claims for the papacy that were further removed from the spirit of the Apostle Peter, not to mention the Lord himself. (McBrien, Richard P. Lives of the Popes: The Pontiffs from St. Peter to Benedict XVI. Harper, San Francisco, 2005 updated ed., p. 232)

Boniface certainly sounds like one more driven by his own lusts than one who was a true apostolic successor, but he is claimed to be “Peter’s successor” for nearly a decade (1293-1303). Interestingly, Boniface VIII also was confined to eternal torment by Dante in his Divine Comedy while he was still alive.

There were others of ill fame who also took the name Boniface, but my point today is that one of the so-called successors of Peter (who certainly did not follow him morally) made a pronouncement that sounded like it was supposed to be one on faith and morals and many within the Vatican are currently taking a different position (for example, the position that they took with the Anglicans violated a statement made by the late 19th century Pope–see More Anglican Leaders Considering Defecting to Rome).

Compromise has often occurred within the Vatican, and I am concerned that both biblical and even Catholic prophecy point to a time when more compromise will be made for the sake of “unity.”

UK’s May: ‘Things need to change’; Terror panic injures 1500 in Italy.

Sunday, June 4th, 2017

Theresa May and Donald Trump

COGwriter

The UK Prime Minister and US President have reacted to the London Bridge terrorist attacks:

June 4, 2017

The death toll rose to seven Sunday, following the latest terrorist attack to strike Britain, with Prime Minister Theresa May blaming the “evil ideology of Islamist extremism” and vowing to conduct a review of the nation’s counterterrorism laws.

London Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick confirmed that seven people were killed in Saturday night’s incident that saw a van mow down pedestrians on London Bridge before the vehicle’s occupants got out and started stabbing patrons of nearby bars and restaurants. That toll does not include the three attackers, who were fatally shot by officers within eight minutes of the first emergency call, Dick said.

London Ambulance Service earlier said it had taken “at least 48 patients to five hospitals across London.” …

May, who is running for another term in this week’s general election, said the nation needs to step up its fight against radical ideologies in response, asserting that there is “far too much tolerance for extremism in our country.”

“Things need to change,” May said Sunday, speaking outside of the prime minister’s residence at 10 Downing Street. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/follow-up-on-london-bridge-attack/2017/06/04/5216bbb2-48c5-11e7-8de1-cec59a9bf4b1_story.html?utm_term=.ba05b4ac90a8

June 4, 2017

The White House said late Saturday that President Donald Trump offered America’s “full support” in investigating the “brutal terror attacks” in London during a telephone call with British Prime Minister Theresa May.

The U.S. State Department said it “condemns the cowardly attacks targeting innocent civilians in London.” The statement continued, “We understand UK police are currently treating these as terrorist incidents. The United States stands ready to provide any assistance authorities in the United Kingdom may request.” …

President Trump also tweeted that the attacks emphasized the correctness of his strict policies on immigration. Other users of social media, both in the U.S. and in Britain, criticized Trump. https://www.voanews.com/a/terror-attack-london-death-toll/3886089.html

June 4, 2017

President Donald Trump took to Twitter early Sunday morning to respond to the terror attacks that killed seven people and wounded dozens more in the heart of London late Saturday night.

“We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. If we don’t get smart it will only get worse,” Trump wrote.

“At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is ‘no reason to be alarmed!'”

London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, urged Londonders not to be alarmed by the increased police presence across the city following the attack. He released a video statement on Sunday morning asking that the city “remain calm and vigilant in the days ahead.”

“We will never be cowed by terrorism,” he said, calling the attackers “barbaric cowards.”

Trump tweeted a third time on Sunday morning: “Do you notice we are not having a gun debate right now?” He wrote. “That’s because they used knives and a truck!” http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-responds-to-london-terror-attacks-2017-6

London Bridge attack: 12 arrested in Barking as death toll rises to seven …

Salahudee Jayabdeen, 40, said one of the suspected attackers had been forcibly removed from a local mosque called Jabir Bin Zyad after questioning the Imam during a service. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/live/2017/jun/03/london-bridge-closed-after-serious-police-incident-live

So, what needs to change?

Is it simply language about political correctness?

No.

Is it simply taking the threat of Islamic extremism more seriously?

No.

Why?

Because those proposals are not getting to the real cause of terrorism. The real cause is one that the top political leaders in the UK and USA will not now acknowledge.

Notice the following from my article Why Terrorism? Is Terrorism Prophesied?:

The Bible clearly prophesies terrorism. Notice some of those prophecies:

5 They have corrupted themselves; They are not His children, Because of their blemish: A perverse and crooked generation. … 25 The sword shall destroy outside; There shall be terror within (Deuteronomy 32:5,25)

12 “Cry and wail, son of man; For it will be against My people, Against all the princes of Israel. Terrors including the sword will be against My people; Therefore strike your thigh. (Ezekiel 21:12)

25 Because you disdained all my counsel, And would have none of my rebuke, 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your terror comes, 27 When your terror comes like a storm, And your destruction comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. (Proverbs 1:25-27)

5 Also they are afraid of height, And of terrors in the way (Ecclesiastes 12:5).

6 You have forsaken Me,” says the Lord,
“You have gone backward.
Therefore I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you;
I am weary of relenting!
7 And I will winnow them with a winnowing fan in the gates of the land;
I will bereave them of children;
I will destroy My people,
Since they do not return from their ways.
8 Their widows will be increased to Me more than the sand of the seas;
I will bring against them,
Against the mother of the young men,
A plunderer at noonday;
I will cause anguish and terror to fall on them suddenly. (Jeremiah 15:6-8)

While many political, media, and other leaders refuse to believe the Bible, the reality is that those of us who believe the Bible realize that terrorism is prophesied.

Terror will hit not only the USA and its Anglo-Saxon descended allies, but also many in Europe and elsewhere.

Terrorism was to hit a perverse and crooked generation. The top leaders in the UK and USA have endorsed various forms of perversity for this generation.

Notice also the following from my article Why Terrorism? Is Terrorism Prophesied?:

The Bible indicates that terrorism can happen as the result of disobedience:

12 Behold, these are the ungodly,Who are always at ease; They increase in riches…19 Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors. (Psalms 73:12,19)

10 You have forgotten God your Savior; you have not remembered the Rock, your fortress. Therefore, though you set out the finest plants and plant imported vines, 11 though on the day you set them out, you make them grow, and on the morning when you plant them, you bring them to bud, yet the harvest will be as nothing in the day of disease and incurable pain.

12 Oh, the raging of many nations–they rage like the raging sea! Oh, the uproar of the peoples–they roar like the roaring of great waters! 13 Although the peoples roar like the roar of surging waters, when he rebukes them they flee far away, driven before the wind like chaff on the hills, like tumbleweed before a gale. 14 In the evening, sudden terror! Before the morning, they are gone! This is the portion of those who loot us, the lot of those who plunder us. (Isaiah 17:10-14, NIV)

14 ‘But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments, 15 and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant, 16 I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. 17 I will set My face against you, and you shall be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you shall reign over you, and you shall flee when no one pursues you. (Leviticus 26:14-17)

More and more in the USA and its Anglo-Saxon descended allies (UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand) will not observe God’s commandments and more and more legal decisions are contrary to, and basically despise His statutes (the LGBTQ agenda, including transgender actions, come to immediate mind).  No one should be surprised that the USA and UK have experienced terrorism–and as I have written for years, more will come. Consider also the following:

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man — and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. 27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. (Romans 1:18-32)

Many in the USA ands its allies either are involved in practices that the Bible condemns or condone one or more behaviors that the Bible says not to approve of.

Do not look for political leaders to truly reverse it. Instead, many politicians (including nearly all on the Democratic party side in the USA) either want to keep the ‘gains’ of the LGBT community or want to push for more ‘gains’ that are contrary to God’s statutes and commandments.

Although national repentance is not likely, personal repentance is.  God does have a plan of protection from the Great Tribulation for those who are Philadelphian Christians in the 21st century (Revelation 3:7-13; see also There is a Place of Safety for the Philadelphians. Why it May Be Petra).

The murders and techniques used by terrorists are brutal and mean, and also tend to display a form of cowardice. The Apostle Paul was inspired to warn that such behaviors were prophesied:

1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! (2 Timothy 3:1-5)

Many terrorists claim to have a form of godliness, but do not believe in the God of the Bible.  Their brutality is hurting them with the vast majority of nations around the world, including predominantly Islamic ones.

It is not just the UK and USA, of course, that are affected.

Notice something that happened in Italy last night:

June 4, 2017

About 1,500 people were injured in the Italian city of Turin after a firecracker provoked a stampede on Saturday night, police say.

Thousands of football fans were watching a live relay of Juventus’ Champions League final against Real Madrid in Cardiff when a bang was heard and rumours of an explosion spread.

At least seven people, including a seven-year-old child, were seriously hurt, local media say. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-40147813

Why would people panic and stampede because of a firecracker?

Well, the logical reason would be that they suspected terrorism. At risk of redundancy, notice again the following from the Bible:

Thousands were fleeing when no one was pursuing them in Italy.

Notice the following from the old Worldwide Church of God as well as some of my comments in the article Why Terrorism? Is Terrorism Prophesied?:

TERRORISM the Worst Is Yet to Come!

Suicide bombers threaten mayhem in the Middle East. And experts now warn about “state-supported terrorism.” Where is it all headed? …

Terrorist groups survive despite governmental pressures in much the same way as a troubled business survives in spite of economic difficulties. To “stay in business,” terrorist groups have, in the past, robbed banks, kidnapped, extorted, even dealt in drugs or other contraband materials. But “local fund-raising” has proven unreliable for some groups. As a result, they have opted for another, more ominous way of augmenting their budgets: seeking out powerful sponsors to provide safe havens, training, weapons and money. In some cases these sponsors have proven to be national governments — leading to what is now called “state-supported terrorism.” Terrorists have become the means by which some powerful nations, desiring to avoid unwanted escalation or public outcry, can punish their enemies at a relatively small cost. …

State sponsorship has presented a dangerous new face of terrorism. For one thing, the level of weaponry employed has advanced greatly. Crude pipe bombs have been replaced by sophisticated remote-fired car bombs. Molotov cocktails are out; rocket-propelled grenades are in. But greater levels of finances and weaponry are not the only changes that have come on the scene. Targets have changed also. …

Terrorism Will Be Stopped

The immediate future does not look bright for those battling against terrorism. And as the world’s level of frustration rises, an America that has seemed nearly impervious to terrorism may begin to suffer along with the rest of the world. … This recent historic period was not unlike the situation in Beirut today — and not unlike a time described by the apostle Paul 1,900 years ago: “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves… boastful, proud, abusive… unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash…” (II Tim. 3:1-4, New International Version).

Jesus Christ himself prophesied (see the account in Matthew 24:7-8) that at the time of the end, “nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom…. All these are the beginning of sorrows.” This is what we have today. One nation sponsoring bloody terrorist attacks on another. The governments under assault today are often powerless to stop this deadly scourge. The world must, instead, look elsewhere for a way out of this madness. More killings, more bombings, more sorrows are on the horizon. But there is a government on its way that will deal with terrorism in a firm manner. The kingdom of God will save mankind from men willing to go to any length — whether by war or terrorism — to achieve their means.

The coming Messiah “will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore” (Isa. 2:4, NIV). (Taylor D. TERRORISM the Worst Is Yet to Come! Plain Truth, May 1984)

God does have a plan to fix terrorism, but the politicians do not know what it is. The plan is the replacement of the governments of this world with the Kingdom of God:

15 Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!”  (Revelation 11:15)

This is something that politicians around the world neither believe nor advocate. Until then, we in the Continuing Church of God will work to help fulfill the following:

14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:14)

The Kingdom of God will be the solution to terrorism. God will fix this. That is part of the good news, the Gospel of the Kingdom of God.

Islam and other religions that oppose the truth will be eliminated.

Artist Depiction of Pentecost (Cadetgray)

COGwriter

Today is the Day of Pentecost for 2017. Unlike other biblical holy days, some version of the Day of Pentecost is observed by a lot of mainstream churches, both Catholic and Protestant.

And of course, since Pentecost is a biblical holy day, it is observed by Church of God groups like the Continuing Church of God. Pentecost is the day that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles in the shape of fire (Acts 2:3-4). Here is a sermon suggested for today: Pentecost: What it Teaches and When it is and here is a second sermon: Pentecost Plan.

Most groups that profess Christ consider that Pentecost marked the formal beginning of the New Testament church. And that is true.

Since the Holy Spirit was given on the Day of Pentecost, based upon the date and practices that God gave the children of Israel in the Old Testament, it is logical to conclude that the Old Testament can give us some insight into its meaning.

First of all the term Pentecost is a Greek term meaning 50th. That term is derived from the following Hebrew description of calculating the date:

And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed. Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath (Leviticus 23:15-16).

The Day of Pentecost has several names, and because of that, some have been confused about it. Its other names in the Bible include, the Feast of Harvest, the Feast of Weeks and the day of firstfruits:

… the Feast of Harvest, the firstfruits of your labors (Exodus 23:16).

And you shall observe the Feast of Weeks, of the firstfruits (Exodus 34:22).

Also on the day of the firstfruits, when you bring a new grain offering to the LORD at your Feast of Weeks, you shall have a holy convocation (Numbers 28:26).

While some Protestant commentators (e.g. Radmacher E.D. ed. The Nelson Study Bible. Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, 1997, p213) refer to the wave sheaf offering as the feast of firstfruits, this is a misnomer. While “a sheaf of firstfruits” was offered then (Leviticus 23:10), as shown above, the Bible refers to the Feast of Weeks as the time of firstfruits (not simply one sheaf). And, as shown below, it refers to the time of counting fifty as being associated with firstfruits:

Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer a new grain offering to the LORD. You shall bring from your dwellings two wave loaves of two-tenths of an ephah. They shall be of fine flour; they shall be baked with leaven. They are the firstfruits to the LORD (Leviticus 23:16-17).

Does the term firstfruits help us understand this day? It should.

The New Testament, also, does discuss some concepts associated with firstfruits.

Paul also wrote the following:

Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit (Romans 8:23).

Recall that it was the Holy Spirit that was first given on the Day of Pentecost. And that was a type of the firstfruits of the Spirit.

Who are the firstfruits?

These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb (Revelation 14:4-5).

In the Old Testament, God said:

“I found Israel Like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers As the firstfruits on the fig tree in its first season. But they went to Baal Peor…” (Hosea 9:10).

So originally, physical Israel was like the firstfruits on the branches of a fig tree, but they were unfaithful. In the New Testament, Paul alludes to this and Christians when he wrote:

For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.” Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either (Romans 11:16-21).

So while physical Israel was intended to be firstfruits, it was replaced by Christians as the firstfruits. And those firstfruits began on Pentecost.

But what about Jesus? Wasn’t He a type of firstfruits?

Yes, He certainly was. Paul notes:

But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming (1 Corinthians 15:20-23).

Christ is the fulfillment of the wave sheaf offering in Leviticus 23:10. He is the sheaf of firstfruits. He also fulfilled that role when He ascended into heaven on the Sunday (the wave sheaf offering was on a Sunday) after He was resurrected (John 20:1,17). But neither He nor His true followers observed what is now called Easter.

Also, James notes that Jesus brought us forth to also be a type of firstfruit:

Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures (James 1:18).

So while Jesus was the original firstfruit to represent the wave sheaf offering, true Christians are a kind of firstfruits, represented by the Day of Pentecost. “Firstfruits” mean that only a few will make it in this age–but they also imply that there will be a greater harvest–a time where all who never had an opportunity for salvation will later have an opportunity (for more scriptural references, please read the article Universal Offer of Salvation: There Are Hundreds of Verses in the Bible Supporting the Doctrine of True Apocatastasis).

Notice what the Apostle Peter stated on Pentecost:

Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses (Acts 2:29-32).

Notice that Peter, on Pentecost, referred to Jesus as fruit and that He was raised.

Now Jesus was not only the first of the firstfruits, He was also the firstborn among many brethren:

For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8:29).

Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead (Revelation 1:5).

Since Jesus is the firstborn, this certainly implies that there will become others who are to be like Him. Thus, becoming like Jesus Christ is also part of the message of Pentecost.

In addition to marking the beginning of the NT church, Pentecost helps us better understand God’s plan of salvation. Most who profess Christ and observe this day seem not to realize how “firstfruits” tie in with this holy day.

Terrorists kill and maim on London Bridge

London Bridge at night

COGwriter

The UK got hit by terrorists again:

June 3, 2017

An unmarked van drove into pedestrians on London Bridge in the British capital late Saturday evening, striking a number of people. There also were reports that attackers stabbed people near the scene of the road terror.

British police responded in force to what they described as a “major security incident” and closed the bridge and nearby roads to all traffic. Subway service to London Bridge station also was halted by underground railway officials, and armed police were patrolling the area.

Prime Minister Theresa May was briefed by security officials and monitoring the situation, her office at 10 Downing Street said. In Washington, President Donald Trump’s press secretary, Sean Spicer, said U.S. security officials were following the events in London closely, and that Trump was up to date on the details.

The carnage occurred near the southern end of London Bridge, which crossed the River Thames between central London and a South London neighborhood known as Borough Market. Police tweeted that they are also responding to an incident in the Vauxhall area.

Many people witnessed what took place and gave their accounts to police and news reporters. Most said they saw a white van heading toward Borough Market veer off the roadway at high speed and drive into pedestrians; about five to eight people who had been walking across the bridge were hit and thrown to the pavement.

Other witnesses said they saw people who had been stabbed in a restaurant close to Borough Market. https://www.voanews.com/a/london-bridge-incident/3885732.html

June 3, 2017

Three men jumped out a white van after it mowed down pedestrians on London Bridge and began stabbing people with “12-inch knives,” it has been reported.

Police confirm there has been more than one fatality in the attacks.

A man was taken into custody by police who warned those nearby to move away.

There have also been reports of another attack in Borough Market after bodies were seen lying on the ground by horrified witnesses.

The white van is said to have veered off the road and struck “15 or 20” people after 10pm. There are also unconfirmed reports of stabbings and gunfire – with one witness reporting that she saw three people whose throats were cut. …

It is feared that the incident is terrorist-related.

It comes just two months after terrorist Khalid Masood mowed down pedestrians on the city’s Westminster Bridge before stabbing an unarmed policeman in a deadly rampage. http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/breaking-news-terror-attack-fears-10555735

Yes, this looks like another terrorist incident. It was deadly and terrifying–that makes it a terrorist incident. Presumably we will learn later if there is a connection to Islam for any of the terrorists.

Terror is prophesied for the end time descendants of the children of Israel–and this includes the UK:

25 The sword shall destroy outside; There shall be terror within (Deuteronomy 32:25)

Therefore I will stretch out My hand against you and destroy you;
I am weary of relenting!
7 And I will winnow them with a winnowing fan in the gates of the land;
I will bereave them of children;
I will destroy My people,
Since they do not return from their ways.
8 Their widows will be increased to Me more than the sand of the seas;
I will bring against them,
Against the mother of the young men,
A plunderer at noonday;
I will cause anguish and terror to fall on them suddenly. (Jeremiah 15:6-8)

Terror within is referring to terror coming from people living within a nation.

While many political, media, and other leaders refuse to believe the Bible, the reality is that those of us who believe the Bible realize that terrorism is prophesied–and we keep seeing it.

There is likely to be a lull related to some type of a peace deal (cf. Daniel 9:27; see also The ‘Peace Deal’ of Daniel 9:27), future terrorism will hit not only the UK, its Anglo-Saxon descended allies, and the USA, but also many in Europe (cf. Daniel 11:40-43) and elsewhere.

The only real solution will be the Kingdom of God. Pray for it to come (Matthew 6:10; see also Prayer: What Does the Bible Teach?).

An hour of so after posting all of this, the following was reported:

June 3, 2017

British police are responding to three incidents across London following reports of a vehicle slamming into pedestrians on the London Bridge. Police say there is more than one fatality following the three separate incidents, the BBC reports.

A witness who was on the bridge told the BBC she saw a speeding van veer onto the pavement, striking as many as six people. Police then responded to reports of incidents at two more sites. Live updates are below:

8:07 p.m. ET: Police say they are working with Royal Naval Lifeboat Institution to evacuate public from the London Bridge incident.

7:51 p.m. ET: Metropolitan Police tweeted the London Bridge and Borough Market incidents were declared terrorist incidents. The Vauxhall stabbing is not connect to the incidents, they tweeted. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/london-bridge-british-police-respond-to-incident-close-bridge/

So, yes, this is now being recognized as at least two terrorist incidents.

Notice also the following which I saw online another a bit later:

A BBC eyewitness saw three men stabbing people indiscriminately, shouting “this is for Allah”. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-06-03/van-rams-pedestrians-serious-incident-london-bridge-knife-attack-follows-live-feed

This is no surprise as the entire story sounded like Islamic terrorism. Sadly, terror from those claiming Islam will continue.

LCG’s Roderick C. Meredith funeral report

Saturday, June 3rd, 2017

Roderick C. Meredith

COGwriter

As announced previously (see LCG’s Roderick C. Meredith funeral information), the funeral of Dr. Roderick C. Meredith of the Living Church of God (LCG) was last Sunday. Here is information about his funeral from LCG’s Gerald Weston that was read at LCG services today:

Dr. Meredith’s funeral last Sunday gave a fitting tribute to a man to whom we all owe a great deal. It is so easy to take many events in life for granted, but we should never forget the contribution Dr. Meredith gave for each of us. … Guests for the funeral came from Australia and Belgium, as well as from all over the United States and Canada. There were visitors from various Church of God groups and some former Ambassador College students. A large high school auditorium was booked for the occasion and it turned out to be the perfect size, with most seats filled.

Dr. Meredith had been in my prayers until he died–which was on May 18, 2017. His family is still in my prayers.

Gerald Weston is the replacement, so to speak, for Dr. Meredith at LCG.
