US jobless claims hit 3.3 million, quadruple previous record

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly 3.3 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week — more than quadruple the previous record set in 1982 — amid a widespread economic shutdown caused by the coronavirus.
The surge in weekly applications was a stunning reflection of the damage the viral outbreak is inflicting on the economy. Filings for unemployment aid generally reflect the pace of layoffs.
Layoffs are sure to accelerate as the U.S. economy sinks into a recession. Revenue has collapsed at restaurants, hotels, movie theaters, gyms, and airlines. Auto sales are plummeting, and car makers have close factories. Businesses are not simply cutting jobs to save money. Many are cutting costs so that the business has a chance to continue to operate in the future.
A headline on AOL news today was, Pandemic Wreaks Havoc on American Job Market.
As far as increased unemployment and layoffs go, what else would be expected when various governments declare the shut down of ‘non-essential businesses’ and order ‘shelter in residence’? It was government actions (whether or not justified by the facts) that was a major factor in the increased unemployment and much of the downturn.
And of course, increased unemployment means reduced production and increased economic fears.
What is the ‘solution’ for those from the federal leaders of the USA?
Increasing official debt, promising cash payments, relaxed mortgage rules, and printing money essentially out of thin air. From a prophetic perspective, that will not end well (cf. Habakkuk 2:6-8).
The US federal government (as well as leaders in various nations) seem to hope that by putting additional money in the economy and giving more money to the unemployed, that politicians may get re-elected and massive civil unrest will be averted.

The coronavirus is not just causing a shortage of toilet tissue, cleaning supplies and bread, it is prompting an increase in gun and ammunition sales from people fearful of the disease’s potential aftermath.
People like Daniel Hill, who had never purchased a gun prior to the coronavirus pandemic. Last week, Hill picked up two guns, a 9-millimeter Taurus handgun, and an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, from Hyatt Gun and Coin, a gun store in North Carolina …
Hill, 29, who works as a kitchen manager in Charlotte, N.C., told The Times that the unknown aftermath of the coronavirus caused him to fear a potential lapse in public safety —complete with lootings, robberies and “everything shutting down, like in a zombie movie.” Hill said he feared an America that “just won’t have any sense of lawfulness anymore.”
Gun and ammunition dealers say Hill is not alone. Gun stores are reportedly seeing a sharp increase in customers who share Hill’s fears. Some states have sold out of particular models of firearms and other survival prep gear, including in California, New York, Ohio, Washington State, and Alabama. One Twitter photo showed a long line of people outside of a Los Angeles gun shop, waiting to purchase their firearms. …

More armed Americans means the possibility of violent civil unrest is increasing.
And, in the future, we will have violent civil unrest in the USA.

Modeling study suggests 18 months of COVID-19 social distancing, much disruption
“Each policy has major challenges,” the authors wrote. Mitigation “might reduce peak healthcare demand by 2/3 and deaths by half. However, the resulting mitigated epidemic would still likely result in hundreds of thousands of deaths and health systems (most notably intensive care units) being overwhelmed many times over.”
To avoid that, the country would need to focus on suppression. But suppression requires social distancing measures far longer than the 14 to 30 days Americans have been told to prepare for. Instead, they would need to be in place for 18 months, or until a vaccine is made available.
“I think the model’s broad conclusion is correct that there is a terrible dilemma of very long-term social distancing, or overloading healthcare systems, or both,” said Marc Lipsitch, DPhil, a professor of epidemiology and the director of the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics at Harvard University. “With the options currently available I do not see a way to get out of this dilemma.”
Model considers 3 scenarios, predicts high death count
To understand how mitigation or suppression would play out, the Imperial College team, led by Neil Ferguson, OBE, ran a model based on three scenarios. In the first, US officials do nothing to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, schools and businesses are kept open, and the virus is allowed to move through the population.
This would result in 81% of the US population, about 264 million people, contracting the disease. Of those, 2.2 million would die, including 4% to 8% of Americans over age 70. More important, by the second week in April, the demand for critical care beds would be 30 times greater than supply.
If mitigation practices are put in place, including a combination of case isolation, home quarantine, and social distancing of those most at risk (over age 70), the peak critical care demand would reduce by 60%, and there would be half the number of deaths. But this scenario still produces an eightfold demand on critical care beds above surge capacity.
In order to suppress the pandemic to an R0 of below 1, a country would need to combine case isolation, social distancing of the entire population, and either household quarantine or school and university closure, the authors found. These measures “are assumed to be in place for a 5-month duration,” they wrote.
In addition, the authors said, these measures may have to be put back into place if restrictions are lifted and cases surge again.

Certain models suggest that most Americans and most Germans will get COVID-19.
In my own case, since I work with ill people, the odds of contracting COVID-19 are fairly high. Now, while I would pray and likely use appropriate natural interventions, that will not be the case for most.
What will happen when, despite social distancing, shelter in place, closed businesses, failing businesses, medical treatments, and more shortages, a lot more people die?
Survivors will get upset.
According to prophecy, various ones will take wrong steps in these last days:
1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! 6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, 7 always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. (2 Timothy 3:1-8)
You should not be like them.
You should live by the truth.

In this stressful times of disease, closed businesses, and COVID-19 travel restrictions, remember that Jesus taught:
32 Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. (Luke 12:32)
33 … In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. (John 16:33b)
Yes, many of us are facing various tribulations, but as Christians we need to “be of good cheer.”
You do NOT have to be stressed out like more and more in society are.

And her gain than fine gold.

19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; 20 that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; (Deuteronomy 30:19-20)
Wisdom can be found in the word of God and be the tree of life for those willing to retain wisdom. Those who harden their heart to disobey fall into calamity.
Many in the world feel hopeless. But real Christians are not to have “sorrow as others who have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13).
You do not have to be like others in society. You should live God’s way and let your light shine:
14 You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
So, how should people live?
Jesus said:
4 … “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’“ (Matthew 4:4)
God’s word teaches:
12 “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good? (Deuteronomy 10:12-14)
Yes, God’s commands are for OUR GOOD.

What would make people happy?
Jesus came that we might have LIFE, “and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

More and more in the USA do not accept the revealed word of God. They have cast aside various moral restraints and care little for others. They do not want to be the people of the real God. This has not made them happy.
Because of COVID-19 and other factors, aspects of society are breaking down.

What is YOUR purpose?
Your purpose is to give love in a unique way throughout all eternity.
As the Apostle Paul wrote to Christians (and not just married couples):
12 And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all … (1 Thessalonians 3:12)
Whether male or female, humans are intended to give love. Increasing love to all will make eternity better.
That is good news.
You do not need to go the wrong direction that most in the world have accepted.
COVID-19 should serve as a wake-up call to all that the world as we know it, in the USA and elsewhere, is changing.

And ultimately, His Kingdom will replace this world’s societies. That, too, is good news.
But YOU do not need to wait until then.
You can strive to live according to the word of God now.
