A reader sent me a link to the following:

The U.S. Navy has drafted a procedure to investigate and catalogue reports of unidentified flying objects coming in from its pilots. But the service doesn’t expect to make the information public, citing privileged and classified reporting that is typically included in such files. …

The Navy’s recent decision to draft formal guidelines for pilots to document encounters with unexplained aerial phenomena comes after the revelation in late 2017 that the Pentagon ran a secret “UFO” office that spent $22 million over five years to collect and analyze “anomalous aerospace threats.” Funding for the office, known as the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, or AATIP, officially ended in 2012, though operations continued.

Among other things, the program resulted in the release of footage from the cockpit cameras of military aircraft, which appeared to document oval-shape vessels that resemble flying Tic Tacs.

Reports of curious sightings from military aircraft aren’t new. During World War II, Allied military pilots witnessed unexplained objects and fireballs that they dubbed “foo fighters.” A number of official government investigations looked into such phenomena in the postwar period. 05/01/19 https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/UFO-information-not-expected-to-go-to-general-13810876.php

The above will undoubtedly trigger more comments by UFO believers that they exist, the US government knows that they exist, and that there is a conspiracy to withhold that information from the general public.

Many Protestants have historically believed that the USA is a “Christian” nation. And while many do claim to believe that Jesus is the Son of God, notice a report that even more Americans seem to believe in aliens than Jesus:

According to a National Geographic survey, 77 percent of all Americans “believe there are signs that aliens have visited Earth”, and according to a recent Harris poll only 68 percent of all Americans believe that Jesus is God or the Son of God.

That means that the number of Americans that believe that UFOs have visited us is now greater than the number of Americans that believe what the Bible has to say about Jesus Christ. With each passing year, the frequency of UFO sightings seems to keep increasing, as does the number of movies, television shows and video games featuring aliens and extraterrestrial life. Of course, most Americans do not truly know the Jesus of the Bible, they know of/about Him.

Now, if aliens mean spirit-beings like demons, then I too believe that they exist because the Bible teaches that (e.g. James 2:19). But I do not believe that was the intent of the question in the survey by National Geographic.

Although the New Testament is clear that Jesus was the Son of God (e.g. Mark 1:1), many no longer profess to believe the New Testament.

Secular Writers Taught That Jesus Existed

Yet, there is proof outside of scripture that Jesus existed.

Here is a quote from Suetonius. He discusses that around 49 A.D., the Roman Emperor Claudius banished all Jews from the city of Rome (this seems to be an incident also mentioned in Acts 18:2):

“He expelled the Jews from Rome, on account of the riots in which they were constantly indulging, at the instigation of Chrestus” (The Lives of the Caesars, Bk. V, 25).

Chrestus is believed to be a slang and derogatory reference to Christ. Suetonius was not a Christian and referred to them as holding to “a novel and mischevious superstition” (Life of Nero, 16.2), as cited in Bock DL. Studying the Historical Jesus: A Guide to Sources and Methods. Baker Academic, 2002, p. 48.

Here are two quotes from the Jewish historian Josephus (first century):

Antiquities 18.3.3 Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man, for he was a doer of wonderful works, a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews, and many of the Gentiles. He was the Christ, and when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men among us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him; for he appeared to them alive again the third day; as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him. And the tribe of Christians so named from him are not extinct at this day.

Antiquities 20.9.1 But the younger Ananus who, as we said, received the high priesthood, was of a bold disposition and exceptionally daring; he followed the party of the Sadducees, who are severe in judgment above all the Jews, as we have already shown. As therefore Ananus was of such a disposition, he thought he had now a good opportunity, as Festus was now dead, and Albinus was still on the road; so he assembled a council of judges, and brought before it the brother of Jesus the so-called Christ, whose name was James, together with some others, and having accused them as law-breakers, he delivered them over to be stoned.

Notice a translation of a Latin quote from the first, and early second century Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus:

Annal. 15, 44…Christians…Christus, the founder of the name, was put to death by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberius. But the pernicious superstition, repressed for a time, broke out again, not only through Judea where the mischief originated..(Annals of Tacitus. As cited in Giles JA. Heathen records to the Jewish scripture history:containing all the extracts from the Greek and Latin writers, in which the Jews and Christians. James Cornish, 1856. Original from Harvard University, Digitized, Oct 17, 2008, p. 105)

So, secular sources from those that did not claim to believe in Jesus reported about Him.

Let me also add that the James’ Ossuary is physical archaeological evidence that Jesus existed.

The Second Century Writers Taught That Jesus is God

Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God, and also God according to various Christian and professing Christian writers of the second century. And they also taught that He always had existed.

In “the oldest complete Christian sermon that has survived” (Holmes M.W. The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations, 2nd ed. Baker Books, Grand Rapids, 2004, p. 102)–outside those in the Bible–sometimes erroneously referred to as Second Letter of Clement, there seems to be support for binitarianism. It was given perhaps within a year or so of John’s death (thus may be towards the end of the time of Ephesus), and begins with the following:

Brothers, we ought so to think of Jesus Christ, as of God, as “Judge of the living and the dead” (An Ancient Christian Sermon (2 Clement), 1:1. In Holmes M.W. The Apostolic Fathers: Greek Texts and English Translations, 2nd ed. Baker Books, Grand Rapids, 2004, p. 107)

Ignatius, who was known by Polycarp (and praised in this same Polycarp epistle, which is known as Polycarp’s Letter to the Philippians), wrote around 108-120 A.D.:

For our God, Jesus Christ, was conceived by Mary in accord with God’s plan: of the seed of David, it is true, but also of the Holy Spirit. He was born and baptized so that by His submission He might purify the water (Ignatius of Antioch, Letters to the Ephesians 18,2–note this is translated the same by at least three separate translations as done by Dr. Lightfoot, J.H. Srawley, and Roberts & Donaldson).

Polycarp of Smyrna, in the mid-second century, wrote:

But may the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ Himself, who is the Son of God, and our everlasting High Priest, build you up in faith and truth, and in all meekness, gentleness, patience, long-suffering, forbearance, and purity; and may He bestow on you a lot and portion among His saints, and on us with you, and on all that are under heaven, who shall believe in our Lord and God Jesus Christ, and in His Father, who “raised Him from the dead (Polycarp. Letter to the Philippians. From Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 1as edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Chapter 12 modified by R. Thiel to correct omission in translation).

For whosoever does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh, is antichrist (Polycarp, Chapter VII. Letter to the Philippians. From Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 1as edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885).

Him who died for us, and for our sakes was raised again by God from the dead (Polycarp, Chapter IX. Letter to the Philippians. From Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 1as edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885).

Melito of Sardis wrote:

For the deeds done by Christ after His baptism, and especially His miracles, gave indication and assurance to the world of the Deity hidden in His flesh. For, being at once both God and perfect man likewise…He concealed the signs of His Deity, although He was the true God existing before all ages (Melito. On the Nature of Christ. From Roberts and Donaldson).

These are the apparent positions of all groups that I am aware of that profess any form of Christianity, except those that are unitarian or affiliated with the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Thus, early Christians believed and taught that Jesus is God. Regarding Melito’s statement about the Deity hidden in Christ’s flesh after baptism, recall that Jesus taught that it was the Father in Him that did the works, and hence it was not Jesus’ deity that did them (John 14:10).

Even heretics in the second century, like Irenaeus, realized that Jesus was God. Notice excerpts from two of Irenaeus‘ writings:

…there is none other called God by the Scriptures except the Father of all, and the Son, and those who possess the adoption (Irenaeus. Adversus haereses, Book IV, Preface, Verse 4. Excerpted from Ante-Nicene Fathers, Volume 1. Edited by Alexander Roberts & James Donaldson. American Edition, 1885. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

Thus then the Word of God in all things hath the pre-eminence; for that He is true man and Wonderful Counselor and Mighty God. Jesus the Anointed of God, showing Himself to be the One who was proclaimed beforehand by the prophets (Irenaeus, St., Bishop of Lyon. Translated from the Armenian by Armitage Robinson. The fact is that many in the second century taught that Jesus was God.

It is unfortunate that less and less Americans in the 21st century also believe that. Of course, that could partially explain the great moral decline in the USA.

Despite the fact that many do not wish to believe God (or truly believe in Him), God has a plan that involves humanity (see also our free book: Universal OFFER of Salvation, Apokatastasis: Can God save the lost in an age to come? Hundreds of scriptures reveal God’s plan of salvation–a humanity that has been deceived by Satan and his supporters (Revelation 12:9).

China and the USA continue to have differing positions on the South China Sea:

U.S. says most of China’s claims in South China Sea are unlawful

The United States and the world “will not allow Beijing to treat the South China Sea as its maritime empire,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday, prompting China to hit back, reflecting a ratcheting up of tensions between the two powers amid deteriorating relations.

“We are making clear: Beijing’s claims to offshore resources across most of the South China Sea are completely unlawful, as is its campaign of bullying to control them,” Pompeo said in a statement, referring to the contentious and potentially energy-rich stretch of water.

The U.S. has long opposed China’s expansive territorial claims in the South China Sea, regularly sending Navy patrols through the strategic waterways to demonstrate freedom of navigation there. China accuses US of sowing discord in South China Sea

BEIJING (AP) — The Trump administration’s rejection of broad Chinese claims to much of the South China Sea came across in Asia as an election-year political move, with some appealing for calm amid fears of greater tensions.

China accused the U.S. on Tuesday of trying to sow discord between China and the Southeast Asian countries with which it has long-standing territorial disputes in waters that are both a vital international shipping lane and home to valuable fisheries.

“The United States is not a country directly involved in the disputes. However, it has kept interfering in the issue,” the Chinese Embassy in Washington said on its website. “Under the pretext of preserving stability, it is flexing muscles, stirring up tension and inciting confrontation in the region.” …

James Chin, head of the Asia Institute at the University of Tasmania in Australia, said the U.S. stance was nothing new because it has always rejected China’s “nine-dash line,” as its claim to the South China Sea is known.

“What is new is that Trump has sort of made the South China Sea a new focus point for his confrontation with China,” he said.

Both Indonesia and the Philippines joined Pompeo in calling on China to abide by an international arbitration court ruling in 2016 that disqualified many of China’s claims.

Nowhere is this more clear than in the South China Sea, a marginal sea in the Pacific Ocean bordered by 10 competing countries. Over the past five years, the size and scale of China’s land-reclamation has intensified, with satellite evidence of military build-up and threats uttered to the rest of the world — including Australia.

The sea continues some of the world’s most important shipping lanes, and is believed to hold trillions of dollars in undiscovered oil and gas reserves. …

Dr Taylor describes Taiwan as a “ticking time bomb”.

“America’s military ability to defend Taiwan is already at its limit,” he writes. “The US advantage will likely be gone in a decade … allowing Beijing to deny America access to this theatre. …

Well, “doomsday” or Armageddon will come, but not for several years–at least.

The Bible tells of a time when there will be a confederation of the ‘kings of the east’ that will get together:

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

15 “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”

16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon. (Revelation 16:12-16)

This will include Russia, China, Korea, Japan, possibly even the Philippines. Things will one day dramatically change militarily, in Asia, in terms of cooperation.

It needs to be understood that China does not just want territory and rights in the South China Sea. It also wants to dethrone the US dollar as the world’s reserve currency (watch also US Dollar being challenged by Gold-Petro-Yuan) and lead the world. Its Silk Road project is a way to get influence throughout Asia (watch also Is China paving roads to Armageddon?). Similar to what is prophesied for the European Beast of Revelation 13, China is using economic and forceful means to pursue its objectives. But China will NOT be the dominant leader of the world after the USA–Bible prophecy clearly points to Europe for this (for more details, see Europa, the Beast, and Revelation).

China also has long had eyes on Australia. Notice the following:

Trade Minister Steven Ciobo sought to downplay reports of strained ties with China after state media said Australia should be punished for its arrogance.

In an interview with Bloomberg Television, Ciobo acknowledged that there were differences of opinion and said dialogue between the two trading partners was critical. But he insisted the relationship was on a sound footing.

“None of us get particularly worked up over media. Whether it is media here in Australia or media in China, there are elements of it that frankly hyperventilate,” Ciobo said Thursday. “What matters is the high-level discussions that actually take place.”

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi earlier this week blamed Australia for difficulties in the relationship, saying the nation should “discard its traditional thinking and take off its tinted glasses to take a proactive approach towards China’s development.” …

China’s Global Times newspaper this week said Beijing should cut imports to teach “arrogant” Australia a lesson and leave it “hanging for a while.”

China has made similar disparaging comments about Australia before. Contrary to the hopes of people like Australia’s Trade Minister Steven Ciobo, this will not end well for Australia. What will Australia do?

Australia has always believed that it doesn’t have to choose between its economic relationship with China and its defense alliance with the United States. But 2018 is already shaping up to be the year of the hard choice. …

There is a lot at stake, including potentially Australia’s ongoing prosperity.

China is clearly not happy with Australia’s adherence to the US alliance and if it follows through on veiled threats to boycott Australian exports and limit investment, Canberra’s loyalty to Washington could come at the expense of significant economic pain.

China’s hawkish Global Times newspaper, widely viewed as a mouthpiece for the ruling Communist Party, spared no niceties in an op-ed last week that warned Australia against “interference” in the South China Sea (SCS) territorial disputes.

Australia was “kissing up” to the US and risked “poisoning” its relations with China, which could “adopt strong countermeasures which will seriously impact Australian economic development.” 01/08/18 http://www.atimes.com/article/australias-hard-choice-china-us/

Militarily, the Aussies realized decades ago that they would rely on the USA.

Australia will learn that the USA will one day be defeated (Daniel 11:39) and not be able to defend it.

Australia and New Zealand: Origins and Prophecy

China is trying to rise up and spread its influence. It is not pleased with interference from the USA.

The Bible tells of the final Time of the Gentiles. (Luke 21:23-24; Revelation 11:2). This, at least partially, means that this is the time when the descendants of Israel will no longer dominate the world scene. Ken Marsh, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers in London, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme earlier that the law would be “impossible for enforcement” as he called for shopkeepers to “step up to the plate and take some responsibility”.

California closes indoor restaurants, movie theaters and all bars statewide as coronavirus cases rise

• California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday ordered all counties in the state to close all bars and the indoor operations of businesses including restaurants, movie theaters and museums, as Covid-19 cases continue to climb.
• The businesses will be allowed to operate outdoors, if possible, except for bars, he said.

It was NOT reassuring to me to hear that California (where I am writing this from) decided to restrict personal freedoms again and reimpose more lockdowns (though I told my staff about two weeks ago, I expected this again). The local “good news” is that the county (San Luis Obispo) I live in has been exempted from some few of the restrictions, but those exemptions may not last. We will see.

The worldwide ramifications of governmental various steps, including lockdowns, taken are massive. Is this totally the “result of the virus” or the result of cowardice, political expediency, and fear?

A couple of months back, Dennis Praeger wrote the following:

The idea that the worldwide lockdown of virtually every country other than Sweden may have been an enormous mistake strikes many — including world leaders; most scientists, especially health officials, doctors and epidemiologists; those who work in major news media; opinion writers in those media; and the hundreds of millions, if not billions, of people who put their faith in these people — as so preposterous as to be immoral. It is panic and hysteria, not the coronavirus, that created this catastrophe. And the consequences in much of the world will be more horrible than in America. …

The lockdown is “possibly even more catastrophic (than the virus) in its outcome: the collapse of global food-supply systems and widespread human starvation” (italics added). That was published in the left-wing The Nation, which, nevertheless, enthusiastically supports lockdowns. …

And, of course, to smug editors and writers of The Atlantic, in article after repetitive article, the fault lies not with the lockdown but with President Donald Trump. The most popular article in The Atlantic this week is titled “The Rest of the World Is Laughing at Trump.” The elites can afford to laugh at whatever they want. Having worked a little bit with the US NIH, specifically the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (plus my studies and experiences with statistics and modeling), let me state that I was not in awe or fear from their pronouncements based on their predictive models.

As many now realize, their projections have often been wrong, their recommendations change, and much of what they say is short-sighted, political, and/or related to personal objectives.

My experience with local public health officials also has not instilled in me a sense of confidence in their competence as I have seen inappropriate agendas as being pushed, as opposed to proper public health measures, plus massive ignorance related to treatment.

Yes, as a scientist whose anti-viral proposals before the NIH utilizing herbs, glandulars, and nutrients was twice deemed by the US government scientists to have “significant scientific merit,” I have believed much has been mishandled in the COVID-19 matter.

I have opposed most business closures and church closures. The lockdown and other steps related to government actions blamed on COVID-19 is going to have severe ramifications, and some have begun to show up.

We are seeing more hunger, for example, in parts of Africa because of government policies.

The first lockdown was bad enough, now there are more.

Many government leaders and health officials either do not understand economics or do not seemingly care.

Yes, businesses around the world are struggling.

Yes, lockdowns are taking a toll. And the toll is not complete as we see more lockdowns and threats of them.

Government leaders around the world either like more government controls and/or are afraid not to have severe restrictions lest they look like they have not taken the coronavirus seriously enough. It is not just about public health.

Many around the world are living in fear.

Notice the following about start of the ride of the second horseman of the Apocalypse:

3 When He opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature saying, “Come and see.” 4 Another horse, fiery red, went out. And it was granted to the one who sat on it to take peace from the earth, and that people should kill one another; and there was given to him a great sword. (Revelation 6:3-4)

Notice that he “takes peace from the earth AND that people should kill one another.” Could it be that events in 2019, such as COVID-19 are consistent with taking “peace from the earth”?

Around the world people are AFRAID. The feeling of normalcy is gone for many around the globe. Consider that the travel restrictions, lockdowns, etc. are because of fear. The media and government officials are saying everything will not go back to how it was and that we need to accept what they have called “the new normal.” Speculatively, could this be related to the opening of the second seal?

Not since World War II have we seen anything affect the entire planet so much. I have had a kind of gnawing feeling that perhaps the second seal was opened in the Fall of 2019 or the late Spring or early Summer of 2020 or that it will be very soon.

The literal Greek in Revelation 6:4 for “peace” (εἰρήνην transliterated as eirēnēn) can be interpreted to mean taking away prosperity as well (see BibleHub.com). COVID-19 has, to a degree, done that as even the mainstream media has reported. People are afraid or at least uneasy to a degree we have not seen around the world anytime in the 21st century.

Barnes Notes on the Bible states:

The power given to him that sat on the horse: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another. This would seem to indicate that the condition immediately preceding this was a condition of tranquility, and that this was now disturbed by some cause producing discord and bloodshed. This idea is confirmed by the original words – τὴν εἰρήνην tēn eirēnēn – “the peace”; that is, the previously existing peace. When peace in general is referred to, the word is used without the article: Matthew 10:34, “Think not that I am come to send peace – βαλεῖν εἰρήνην balein eirēnēn – upon the earth.”

So, this rider is not just a rider of war, but taking away THE peace. This is consistent with the “troubles” Jesus prophesied related to the beginning of sorrows in Mark 13:8.

Sorrows and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Revelation 6:1-8 shows the opening of four seals and discusses the rides of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Each of which appears to be associated with aspects of the “beginning of sorrows” that Jesus mentions in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. What do each of the horsemen represent? Did the old Worldwide Church of God teach that these rides were still in the future in the late 21st century? Could any have began in the 21st century? Does the rider of the white horse represent Jesus or false religion? Are there ties to the interfaith and ecumenical movements? What might the bow the horseman has represent? Could this be a tie to Satan the Devil? What about the Beast and False Prophet? Has the “beginning of sorrows” started? Could the first seal be opened? Could COVID-19 have anything to do with the second seal? Has “the peace” been taken from the earth? Could the rider of the red horse have begun with an opening of the second seal? What about riots, looting wars, and rumors of war? Are food inflation, food shortages, and famines associated with the opening of the third seal and rider of the black horse of famine? Could human actions such as evolution teachings, genetically-modified crops, and viral research be factors in the rides of the four horsemen? Is more than death related to pestilences associated with the rider of the pale horse, the fourth seal? Why might this be a factor in 666? Will most people fail to recognize the rides of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse until it is too late to take action? What about the fifth seal and the start of the Great Tribulation? Are there problems with Roman and Eastern Orthodox prophecies concerning the end and the Great Monarch? What about prophecies related to Noah, the King of the North, Armageddon, and Antichrist? Anyway, lockdowns are not the answer.

The world needs to turn to God and seek first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33).

Instead of telling people to support their innate immune system–which is something that I believe government and health officials should be doing–promoting fear has been the apparent policy of choice.

COVID-19 policies have wounded the economies of most nations around the world.

The lockdown is also showing governments the ease that they can impose totalitarian controls. Some believe that was part of the reason behind the lockdowns.

The Bible shows that Europe will eventually reorganize and accept totalitarianism (Revelation 17:12-13) and what it will end up with will not be good. The lockdowns are sort of a trial run.

But the good news is that ultimately, Jesus will return and establish the Kingdom of God.

We live in pre-tribulation, a non-salubrious time. You and I have communicated off and on a few times over the years and I find myself reaching out to you with a question. I have listened to many sermons regarding God’s perspective regarding murder. Striving to Trust in God in all things. But, all fall short of the topic of self-defense.

I also noticed a commonality when it comes to the fact that other COG ministries do not have anything on the subject either. It would seem that it is purposely avoided. Therefore, Have you ever created a study presenting a position on God’s perspective regarding defending one’s self or family especially in these chaotic times?

I respect your opinion on the many subjects you have written. I feel that there seems to be as many scriptures that speak of defending ones’ self as there might be scriptures to the contrary. But alas, there are no sermons.

Sorry, but I do not have a paper on this.

However, this email will give some general answers.

1) Jesus said to pray to be counted worthy to escape what would happen, etc. (Luke 21:36). That is what all Christians should do. And that should be the focus for Christians, not physical theoretical issues. But since most end-time Christians according to Jesus will not be Philadelphian (Revelation 3:7-10), most are not properly focused and most will not escape (cf. Revelation 12:14-17).

2) Jesus also said that Christians may have to flee. That is something you may need to do. And sometimes, even if one has been assaulted.

But that is not what you are asking (even though number 1 is probably the best answer here). You, if I understand your intent, seem to want biblical or ministerial justification to harm someone else in an act of defense.

On that, I would say that we strive to be “wise as serpents, harmless as doves, but beware of men.”

So, beyond that, what should Christians do when confronted with violence?

Well, we would try to stop someone who was trying to harm ourselves or others if we reasonably could. Though, that does not mean that we need to buy guns and try to kill others. We might make noise, call the police, etc. And if something physically seemed absolutely required, we would try to inflict the least harm on the perpetrator(s) to stop others from being harmed.

Of course, remember, it is always better to avoid a violent fight than to be in one. I hope this helps.

That being said, after receiving his response, I looked up what the old Worldwide Church of God (WCG) had on the subject.

There was an article in the old WCG Youth magazine on self-defense:

Do you ever worry about being beat up’? Or robbed, raped or murdered? Many people do. Some are buying handguns or other weapons to protect themselves. Others, especially women concerned about the possibility of assault or even rape, are learning martial arts such as judo, karate or kung fu. Many others just worry and wait. …

When you stop and think about it though, constant worry about self-defense is rather futile. For example, no matter how strong we get, there’s always the possibility someone stronger will come along. Or we’ll be faced by others who have combined forces to impose their will upon us. That’s the idea behind gangs, for instance–strength in numbers. …

A lesson for today

Millions of people today rely on weapons and other forms of self-defense because they feel that is the only source of protection they can have confidence in. But did Jesus Christ teach that we should be concerned with retaliation as a form of self-defense!

No.

He said, “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise” (Luke 6 :31). In other words, put yourself in other people’s shoes and treat them as you would want to be treated.

Many people think that biblical teaching makes Christians defenseless in a world filled with crime and violence. After all, Jesus Christ taught the concept of turning the other cheek (Matthew 5:39), and the apostle Paul said, “See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone” (I Thessalonians 5: 15). But God is real, and He has the power to intervene on our behalf-on one condition: “And what ever we ask” -including protection – “we receive from Him . . . ”

Why?

” . . . because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight” (I John3 :22). Of course, though God says He will protect us, we shouldn’t tempt Him by taking unnecessary risks. God won’t always intervene on our behalf if we’re careless and behave foolishly. We should take the precautions that we can. (Delamater T. Your Best Self-Defense. Youth 84, March 1984).

The Psalmist wrote:

6 For I will not trust in my bow, Nor shall my sword save me. (Psalm 44:6)

The old Worldwide Church of God also had the following in its flagship publication:

Your Protection?

Most of mankind today live the way they think is right. They make their own laws. Society has all kinds of ideas of how people should cope with crime.

Millions take up guns and other destructive weapons for self-defense because that is the only source of protection they believe they can have confidence in.

But what defense against personal attacks of crime and violence does a person have who fears and obeys God?

Did Christ teach those who would obey him to take into their own hands the weapons to “blow others away” in a blaze of gunfire? Christ said, “And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise” (Luke 6:31).

Many assume the Christianity that Christ preached makes Christians defenseless in a world filled with crime and violence. They totally fail to grasp the divine help, blessings and protection God can heap on those who obey God and trust him in times of trouble. Even those who profess to be Christians often scoff at the idea of divine protection. They practice a religion “having a form of godliness but denying its power” (II Tim. 3:5).

But God is real! His power to intervene on behalf of those who fear and obey him is real! Christ recognized that we live in a world threatened daily by the possibility of crime and violence. He lived in a world like that.

So did the early apostles and Christians whom he commanded to pray daily, “Deliver us from evil” (Matt. 6:13, AV). Can God deliver those who ask for his daily care and protection? “… the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment,” answers the apostle in II Peter 2:9 (RAV). God’s power to intervene on our behalf is not limited — except by the quality of one’s faith and obedience. “And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight” (I John 3:22, RAV).

Please do not misunderstand! God expects us to be wise and avoid the potential for crime and evil whenever possible. Often it’s only a matter of using common sense and of staying out of trouble-ridden areas. …

Are you doing your part? Do you have God’s special help and protection? Are you doing what is pleasing in his sight? (Shroeder DD. Plain Truth, June 1983)

Yes, God is real.

And though a couple of times since being part of the Church of God I have faced the real possibility of violence, in none of those instances did I have to physically harm anyone.

It is likely that you never should have to either.

Those who look into the New Testament and church history realize that avoiding carnal warfare and even watching intentionally violent sports was not something that early Christians did (see Military Service and the Churches of God: Do Real Christians Participate in Carnal Warfare or Encourage Violence?).

That being said, I do feel that it is appropriate to have use loud noise items or bright lights to dissuade one from causing you harm. And yes, I do not have a problem with women carrying chemical deterrents, plus advise women who can, to carry a working cellular telephone. These items are not for revenge, but to give the perpetrator(s) reasons to stop from causing physical harm and sinning more.

Notice that David wrote:

1 The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want. …

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:1,4, NKJV for this and later scriptures)

That, of course, does not mean that we intentionally go to dangerous places.

When Satan wanted Jesus to do something dangerous, since He was to be divinely protected, Jesus told the devil:

7 … You shall not tempt the Lord your God. (Matthew 4:7)

So, when you can, avoid dangerous situations.

Notice that when he was concerned about harm, Ezra prayed and called a fast:

22 For I was ashamed to request of the king an escort of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy on the road, because we had spoken to the king, saying, “The hand of our God is upon all those for good who seek Him, but His power and His wrath are against all those who forsake Him.” 23 So we fasted and entreated our God for this, and He answered our prayer. (Ezra 8:22-23)

Always trust God.

But that does not mean we should not take appropriate steps.

Jesus said:

16 Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. 17 But beware of men … (Matthew 10:16-17)

That, for example, is a reason that we use locks.

Jesus also said:

21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace. 22 But when a stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him all his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoils. (Luke 11:21-22)

Do not trust in arms–trust in God:

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
6 In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.

7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord and depart from evil. (Proverbs 3:5-7)

We need to use wisdom and take note of the world we live in. And that the Apostle Paul called it “this present evil age” (Galatians 1:4).

We, also, can pray. Notice part of some prayers on this line in the Psalms:

1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
Defend me from those who rise up against me.
2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity,
And save me from bloodthirsty men. …
9 For God is my defense. (Psalms 59:1-2,9)

1 Hear my voice, O God, in my meditation;
Preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity, (Psalm 64:1-2)

God is our protection. And our source of true defense.

We do not need to live in fear like many in the world does.

Yes, the economic costs have been high around the world. In the USA around 45 million Americans applied for unemployment since the COVID-19 lockdowns and millions more are underemployed. Despite -re-openings, currently “33 million people in the United States are either receiving unemployment benefits or awaiting approval, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said” (see https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-usa-congress/u-s-congress-needs-compromise-to-extend-covid-19-unemployment-payments-pelosi-idUSKCN24D0HO).

What about a full recovery?

Jim Rickards believes that is a ways off:

Economy Won’t Recover Until 2023

The depth of the new depression is clear. What is unclear to most observers are the nature and timing of the recovery.

The answer is that high unemployment will persist for years, the U.S. will not regain 2019 output levels until 2022 and growth going forward will be even worse than the weakest-ever growth of the 2009–2020 recovery.

This may not be the end of the world, yet it is far worse than the most downbeat forecasts. ..

It would take the highest annual real growth in over 40 years, sustained for two consecutive years, to get close to 2019 output levels.

It’s far more realistic to assume real growth will be less than 10% per year. That puts the economy well into 2023 before reaching output levels last achieved in 2019.

This is the reality of this depression.

It’s not about continuously declining GDP. A depression is an initial collapse so large that even years of high growth won’t dig the economy out of its hole. …

There will be no V-shaped recovery. There are no green shoots despite what you hear on TV.

Jim Rickards may be optimistic.

Based on what happens further with the coronavirus and other pestilences, the November 2020 election, as well as the potential for violence, natural disasters, and crop failures, a true full pre-COVID-19 recovery may be further off, if ever, for the USA.

Currently, the USA is looking at how to pump more money into the economy (out of thin air) and thus increase its debt (cf. https://nypost.com/2020/07/12/congress-and-the-white-house-need-to-get-the-next-rescue-package-right/).

Rickards says “the dollar’s demise will take one of three paths”…

1. World money

Yes, social disorder and the Great Tribulation will come. (Thiel B. ‘Project Prophecy’ predicts a 25 year depression. COGwriter.com, October 4, 2015)

Since then, we have seen social disorder.

In 2020, some of that has been associated with COVID-19 and some of that related to policing, racial, and other issues.

Social disorder is a negative factor for the economy as well.

What about Europe?

It is reeling from COVID-19 issues as well–plus will face economic upheavals related to Brexit.

But Europe has NOT produced trillions of Euros of debt, at least not yet, for COVID-19.

Furthermore, the Bible shows that the time will come when Europe will prosper mightily (cf. Revelation 18).

Consider a story, I have reported here before:

There once was a movie that had two men camping outdoors. Suddenly, one man yells, “Run, a bear!” The other man yells back, “You can’t outrun a bear.” The first man responded with, “True, but all I have to do is to outrun you.”

The implication is that the first man only needed to be better runner than the second one, which presumably the bear would consider to be weaker, and then catch and destroy.

From an economic perspective, the story basically is that the debt and economic situation in Europe does not need to be perfect, only perceived to better (or at least similar) than that of the USA to someday surpass it.

COVID-19’s reducing economic output and the USA government’s massively increasing debt–the USA dollar will one day be worth no more than the novelty and scrap value of it cotton-paper!

COVID-19 should be proof that the Anglo-American dominated world as we know it will not continue (watch also our latest video COVID 19 is NOT the End, but could it be TEOTWAWKI?):

3 … knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. The massive increase in debt is UNSUSTAINABLE. That means that things CANNOT CONTINUE as they have been. Biblical prophecies are coming to pass.

Do not live your life like the current world order will continue as it has. Bible prophecy says that it will not. Increasing levels of debt show that a debt bubble will one day burst and the USA (as well as its Anglo-Saxon descended allies) will one day be no more.

Those who do not believe that the economy of the US can fail are ignoring reality.

The economy of the US is, at best, built on a foundation of sand, as debt is certainly not a rock to build upon.

Jesus taught:

24 “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

26 “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:24-27)

34 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. 35 For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:34-36)

Are you watching, praying, and living your life to be accounted worthy? The Great Tribulation is coming.

“Great” will be the fall of the US.

Europe would like to replace the USA as the leader of the West.

Europe does NOT have to be perfect to do this, only perceived as a better option than the USA.

Some observe a memorial to the death of the Prophet Joel on July 13th of each year.

Do you know much about what he was inspired by God to write?

Here is how the Book of Joel starts:

1 The word of the Lord that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.
2 Hear this, you elders, And give ear, all you inhabitants of the land! Has anything like this happened in your days, Or even in the days of your fathers? 3 Tell your children about it, Let your children tell their children, And their children another generation.
4 What the chewing locust left, the swarming locust has eaten; What the swarming locust left, the crawling locust has eaten; And what the crawling locust left, the consuming locust has eaten.
5 Awake, you drunkards, and weep; And wail, all you drinkers of wine, Because of the new wine, For it has been cut off from your mouth. 6 For a nation has come up against My land, Strong, and without number; His teeth are the teeth of a lion, And he has the fangs of a fierce lion. 7 He has laid waste My vine, And ruined My fig tree; He has stripped it bare and thrown it away; Its branches are made white.
8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth For the husband of her youth. 9 The grain offering and the drink offering Have been cut off from the house of the Lord; The priests mourn, who minister to the Lord. 10 The field is wasted, The land mourns; For the grain is ruined, The new wine is dried up, The oil fails.
11 Be ashamed, you farmers, Wail, you vinedressers, For the wheat and the barley; Because the harvest of the field has perished. 12 The vine has dried up, And the fig tree has withered; The pomegranate tree, The palm tree also, And the apple tree — All the trees of the field are withered; Surely joy has withered away from the sons of men.
13 Gird yourselves and lament, you priests; Wail, you who minister before the altar; Come, lie all night in sackcloth, You who minister to my God; For the grain offering and the drink offering Are withheld from the house of your God. 14 Consecrate a fast, Call a sacred assembly; Gather the elders And all the inhabitants of the land Into the house of the Lord your God, And cry out to the Lord.
15 Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is at hand; It shall come as destruction from the Almighty. 16 Is not the food cut off before our eyes, Joy and gladness from the house of our God? 17 The seed shrivels under the clods, Storehouses are in shambles; Barns are broken down, For the grain has withered. 18 How the animals groan! The herds of cattle are restless, Because they have no pasture; Even the flocks of sheep suffer punishment.
19 O Lord, to You I cry out; For fire has devoured the open pastures, And a flame has burned all the trees of the field. 20 The beasts of the field also cry out to You, For the water brooks are dried up, And fire has devoured the open pastures. (Joel 1:1-20)

Here is something that the late Herbert W. Armstrong said about the first chapter of the Book of Joel:

We have had drought. There was the drought in the Middle West in 1934, and then the invasion of bugs and grasshoppers and locusts and everything in 1935. And many people from Kansas and South Dakota and sections in the Middle West like that, and from Oklahoma and places of that sort came out here to the Pacific coast at that time. My friends, that’s only a forerunner, that’s all. But when it comes in its full force and fury it’s described by the prophet Joel, and also Ezekiel says something about it. It’s described in other places in the Bible. Joel says, that it will be a time when the seed shrivels under the clods, the storehouses are desolate; the granaries are ruined because the grain has failed. How the beasts groan, he said, the herds of cattle are perplexed because there is no pasture for them. Even the flocks of sheep are dismayed. (Joel 1:17-18) What’s going to happen when that comes, my friends? What’s going to happen? That is the next thing now to occur. That and the flight of God’s own people…

Alright, now then, I was mentioning what Joel says here about this time of famine that’s coming. You’ve had a foretaste of it, you’ve been getting it — that’s only just little driplings like a great downpour of a deluge, a cloud burst that is going to come and you’ve had a few sprinklings of rain. Just a few little sprinkle drops; that’s all. Well, you people that have been getting these dust storms and all this drought that you’ve had, all you’ve had is just a little sprinkling. I want to tell you there’s a cloudburst of famine coming only it won’t be a cloudburst; it’s just the opposite. It’ll be a cloudburst of sun and no rain. Now, here is what we read in Joel again, there’s no pasture for these cattle. Even the flocks of sheep are dismayed. They haven’t minds to think it out or reason about it or anything they’re just going to be — you know their minds are so constructed; God did the thinking and created what brain they have and put it in there that it makes them automatically eat and they know they should eat grass. They should eat the pasture, and here there won’t be any. And they won’t understand it.

Joel 1: 19-20 “…Unto thee, O LORD, I cry: for fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness,” [That’s the fire of the sun and hot days and the weather will be such it’ll just seem like a fire.] “…and flame…” [the very flame of the sun.] “…has burned all the trees of the field…” What are you going to do when there’s no pasture for your cattle, or for your sheep, or your hogs. And, some of you will know what I mean anyhow. And when the trees are burned up. And there’s no fruit. And your vines will be dried up and there’ll be no fruit on vines.

Joel 1:20 “Even the beasts of the field cry to thee because the water brooks are dried up,…” [Your rivers will be dried up, your river beds.] “…and fire…” [that is the fire of the heat of the sun] “…has devoured the pastures of the wilderness…” (RSV) (Armstrong HW. Famine will come. It may be that the drought that many parts of the USA are experiencing could be a prelude to that.

Here is something from Joel chapter 2:

12 “Now, therefore,” says the Lord,”Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” 13 So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm. 14 Who knows if He will turn and relent, And leave a blessing behind Him — A grain offering and a drink offering For the Lord your God?

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, Call a sacred assembly; 16 Gather the people, Sanctify the congregation, Assemble the elders, Gather the children and nursing babes; Let the bridegroom go out from his chamber, And the bride from her dressing room. 17 Let the priests, who minister to the Lord, Weep between the porch and the altar; Let them say, “Spare Your people, O Lord, And do not give Your heritage to reproach, That the nations should rule over them. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?'” (Joel 2:12-18)

Repentance is something that Joel proclaimed was needed and that is still the case today. Notice that he was saying that all, including the religious who felt that they were God’s people, needed to repent and gather together. That gathering together is something that the Philadelphians need to do in this end time–those who do not risk not being protected from the Day of the Lord, etc. (cf. Zephaniah 2:1-3).

Here are some comments from Herbert Armstrong on Joel 2:12-17:

Joel 2: 12-14 “Yet even now, says the LORD…” [through Joel,] “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning: (13) And rend your hearts, and not your garments. Return unto the [Eternal] your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love…. (14) Who knows whether he will not turn and repent, and leave a blessing behind him, a cereal offering and a drink offering…” [and so on?] Joel 2:17 “With a cry out, “Spare thy people, O [Eternal] make not thine heritage…” [our nation, our people] “… a reproach, a byword among the nations.”(RSV) (Armstrong HW. Here is some more of what Joel wrote in chapter 2:

28 “And it shall come to pass afterward
That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. (Joel 2:28-31)

According to the Apostle Peter, there was a partial fulfillment of this (Acts 2:16) on the Day of Pentecost c. 31 A.D. (Acts 2:1).

But as verses such as verse 31 will not be fulfilled until after the start of the Great Tribulation, it is logical to conclude that God would still use dreams to sometimes convey parts of His message prior to the start of the Great Tribulation.

The late Pastor General of the old Worldwide Church of God (WCG), Herbert W. Armstrong, basically said so in a 1981 sermon (scripture is from the KJV):

All right, now there’s another prophecy for the people …

Joel 2:28-29 And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: (29) And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

So there is a time coming when God will start pouring out His spirit on human beings. … Day of Pentecost, 3000 were baptized. Peter preached a sermon. They were pricked in their hearts. God began to draw them. God was now… Remember He said, “I will pour out of my spirit on all flesh.” All right, there’s a duality of that. (Armstrong HW. Building The Temple. Sermon, February 14, 1981)

Herbert W. Armstrong was correct about the time coming when God would pour out His Spirit as well as the duality (see also Does the CCOG have the confirmed signs of Acts 2:17-18?). There was a duality to what Peter preached in Acts 2–and that duality is for our current time!

As it turns out, dreams had been given to at least three people who later became part of the Continuing Church of God which were essentially fulfilled (see Dreams, the Bible, and the Continuing Church of God).

Yet, most people (including Christians) discount that, despite God inspiring Joel to write about it and the Apostle Peter to preach about it.

Sadly, most who claim Christianity will not accept that God is using dreams in real Christians in the 21st century. They do not seem willing to accept those prophecies God gave to Joel. Most do not know the biblical differences between true and false leaders or the signs that GOD says He uses.

Parts of Joel’s message have been at least partially fulfilled and the fulfillment of other parts will come to pass.

Rishi Sunak is the Chancellor of the Exchequer of the UK (a treasury role).

The reality is that Boris Johnson seems to be of the view that unless he is serious about a “no deal” Brexit, the UK will have to give up at least some sovereignty to make a deal with the European Union regard the British Exit (Brexit) from the EU.

He seems to hope that his willingness to hang tough might get the EU to compromise on points it so far has not shown any willingness to do.

The EU wants to dominate world trade. It also wants the world to adopt its standards, and that includes the UK. That is part of why it has not conceded on certain trade points (plus, it wants to be seen as punishing the UK as it wants to discourage other nations from leaving the EU).

Deal or no deal, ultimately Brexit will result in disaster for the UK–and more than economic matters.

Since last century, Church of God (COG) writers have long taught that the UK would not be part of the final Beast power that will arise in Europe. Notice some statements put out by the writers once part of the old Radio Church of God, old Worldwide Church of God, and/or the current Continuing Church of God years before the Brexit vote:

Here is Britain trying to GET IN on this uniting of Europe! … It is this same daughter of ancient Babylon who is to lay the YOKE of captivity and slavery on America and Britain. …

Britain is allowing itself to get mixed in with European foreigners … When God brings Britain DOWN-the rime of JACOBS’ S TROUBLE -the only time when the DAUGHTER of Babylon will be sitting astride a united MILITARY EUROPE. … in prophecy, the NAME Jacob or the name Israel, often refers to the two great nations descended from Ephraim and Manasseh. These are Great Britain and the United States. (Armstrong HW. BRITAIN’S DOOM Prophesied for Common Market Seeking Membership! Plain Truth, July 1962)

the soon-coming resurrected “Holy Roman Empire” – a sort of soon-coming “United States of Europe” – a union of ten nations to rise up out of or following the Common Market of today. Britain will NOT be in that empire soon to come. (Armstrong HW. Incredible Human Potential, Chapter 1. Everest House, 1978)

Perhaps it should be mentioned that the general position within the Churches of God is that Britain will not remain in the EU and will pull out at some point. (Thiel B. It should be understood that ultimately, Britain will NOT thrive as part of the EU but will be taken over by the final European Beast power–yet its former Prime Minister is promoting something that will not help the peoples of the UK. Ephraim (modern Great Britain) will not be part of the “Beast” power, so we can expect some significant change that will push the British out of the EU. (Davis. D. Ireland says “No!” to EU power grab. Commentary, July, 1 2008)

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will not be an equal part of the European Union. Britain will either pull out or be forced out or at least truly lose its sovereignty. Many of the Anglo-peoples of the UK, USA, etc. that are not killed will to be scattered and many will be made slaves (Will the Anglo-Nations be Divided and Have People Taken as Slaves?). That is what the Bible shows will happen during the Great Tribulation.

As far as this “Beast King” goes, he could possibly be the next EU president, but a restructure ultimately will be needed in Europe for the King of the North to have the type of power that the Bible indicate he will have (Revelation 17:12-13). The EU is not ready for that yet.

However, Tony Blair’s statements today are pointing to one more step towards certain biblical prophesies being fulfilled as he is realizing that the UK wants to pull out of the UK–and that is something will happen (directly or indirectly).

The final King of the North (Daniel 11:27-40) will take over the UK, USA, and their Anglo-allies according to Bible prophecy (cf. Daniel 11:39). While more people in the UK are starting to realize that the EU poses dangers to it, most have no idea how dangerous the rising Beast power in Europe will become (cf. Revelation 13:1-4; Daniel 11:39). Britain will ultimately NOT thrive as part of the EU but will be taken over by the final European Beast power. (Thiel B. Notice also the following:

EU … Britain … if she does enter the European Economic Community (EEC), will she remain in this union? … Bible prophecy clearly shows that Britain will not be one of the … NATIONS comprising the final United States of Europe (McNair R. A Strong United Europe. Tomorrow’s World, February 1970, p. 17).

Back in the early 1990s, when I was vice president of an irrigation equipment manufacturer and the EU was still called the European Economic Community, I told our British sales representative, who was visiting the factory in California, that one day the UK would separate from Europe. He flat out told me that could not possibly happen. And he gave reasons, but they were not biblical ones–I told him he was in error. The departure of the UK from the EU shows that those of us who understood biblical prophecies were correct on this.

Many critics have claimed that there is no truth to the COG position that the Anglo-Americans (see Anglo – America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel) are descended from Israel’s son Joseph (through his sons Ephraim and Manasseh).

Yet, it is because of our understanding of that, COG writers have long taught that the UK would not be part of the final Beast power. Essentially, COG writers predicted Brexit decades before the Brexit vote. Including myself over 27 years ago, and Raymond McNair about 50 years ago.

Israel (whose name originally was Jacob) bestowed the following prophesied blessings on the descendants of the sons of Joseph he adopted:

¹³ And Joseph took them both, Ephraim with his right hand toward Israel’s left hand, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Israel’s right hand, and brought them near him. ¹⁴ Then Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraim’s head, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, guiding his hands knowingly, for Manasseh was the firstborn. ¹⁵ And he blessed Joseph, and said:

¹⁶ … Bless the lads; …

And let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.”

¹⁷ Now when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand on the head of Ephraim, it displeased him; so he took hold of his father’s hand to remove it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s head. ¹⁸ And Joseph said to his father, “Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn; put your right hand on his head.”

¹⁹ But his father refused and said, “I know, my son, I know. He also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.”

²⁰ So he blessed them that day, saying, “By you Israel will bless, saying, ‘May God make you as Ephraim and as Manasseh!’” And thus he set Ephraim before Manasseh. (Genesis 48:13-20)

If one looks at secular history, it is clear that the Jews did NOT fulfill the prophecies that Israel was inspired to give. Those of us who believe the Bible realize that these prophecies must be fulfilled. And that Ephraim would arise before Manasseh.

Looking throughout secular history, we see that the British-descended peoples (Ephraim) became a multitude of nations (Genesis 48:19) and the USA (Manasseh) became a great nation (Genesis 48:19).

Being taken over (cf. Daniel 8:24-25) and losing its land will be the ultimate result of Brexit for the UK.

Of course, there will be ups and downs as well. The UK will work to enter trade agreements and I expect it will make one with the USA.

It will work to make one with the EU, that will have problems.

The Bible points to the UK being betrayed by friends:

2 She weeps bitterly in the night,
Her tears are on her cheeks;
Among all her lovers
She has none to comfort her.
All her friends have dealt treacherously with her;
They have become her enemies. (Lamentations 1:2)

Notice that “friends” (like the Europeans) are prophesied to become “enemies.” The UK will be conquered, ultimately.

The UK has taken several stances that the EU does not like, as has the USA.

Now, some have hoped that the UK will hope to get back in with Europe.

Consider the following prophecies related to the descendants of Ephraim:

11 “Ephraim also is like a silly dove, without sense–They call to Egypt, They go to Assyria. 12 Wherever they go, I will spread My net on them; I will bring them down like birds of the air; I will chastise them According to what their congregation has heard (Hosea 7:11-12).

8 Israel is swallowed up; Now they are among the Gentiles Like a vessel in which is no pleasure. 9 For they have gone up to Assyria, Like a wild donkey alone by itself; Ephraim has hired lovers (Hosea 8:8-9).

Ephraim, son of Joseph, was the progenitor of the British-descended peoples. Prophecies mentioning Assyria are a reference to a German-dominated end-time European power.

I long believed that these verses in Hosea will be fulfilled after the start of the Great Tribulation and before the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of the Kingdom of God.

In other words, they will happen AFTER the UK is defeated militarily by the European Beast power. Those in the UK will beg to be treated as other than a conquered people.

What about Europe?

The EU will have ups and downs.

It will have financial strains because of Brexit.

Yet, it will build its military.

Apparently after a financial crisis and civil unrest, the Bible shows that Europe will reorganize and lose all pretenses of being democratic:

12 “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. 14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are called, chosen, and faithful.” (Revelation 17:12-14)

Notice that Europe will fight against true Christians, but that Jesus will have Europe defeated.

Jesus will return as King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 19:16) and establish the millennial Kingdom of God.

Here is a list of some things that will happen after Brexit (several of which are already in progress):

• Europe will end up with a great army (Daniel 11:25).
• Europe will end up with many ships (Daniel 11:40).
• The UK will make a trade deal with the USA.
• The UK and EU will have ups and downs in their relationship, as well as with their economies.
• Europe will have problems with unity (Daniel 2:41-43).
• Europe will reorganize (Revelation 17:12-13).
• Europe will become a successful warning power (Revelation 13:4; Daniel 11:39-43) and conquer the UK (Daniel 8:24-25; cf. Isaiah 17:3).
• The UK will regret Brexit (cf. Hosea 8:8-9).
• But Jesus will have the European Beast power defeated (Daniel 2:44; Revelation 17:14).
• Jesus will return as King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 17:14, 19:16-20) and establish the Kingdom of God.

Brexit, it will not end well for the UK nor ultimately Europe.

Brexit will be messy for both the UK and the EU.

The USA, UN, and EU have, also, all condemned the Turkish announcement.

My wife Joyce and I have visited the Hagia Sophia some years ago. For over 900 years it was an Eastern Orthodox church and perhaps the largest building on earth.

The head of the Geneva-based World Council of Churches has written to Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressing “grief and dismay” from WCC members at his decision to convert the world famous Hagia Sophia into a mosque.

Rev. Ioan Sauca, interim WCC general secretary, sent the letter to the Turkish president on 11 July noting that since 1934, “Hagia Sophia has been a place of openness, encounter and inspiration for people from all nations and religions.

He said it has been a “powerful expression” of Turkey’s “commitment to secularism and inclusion and of its desire to leave behind the conflicts of the past.”

The Turkish president announced his decision on July 10 after a court ruling said its museum status was not legal and different media-worldwide interpreted his move as one to shore up his Islamist-base in troubled times.

“Mr. Erdogan’s opponents say he has raised the issue of restoring Hagia Sophia as a mosque every time he has faced a political crisis, using it to stir supporters in his nationalist and conservative religious base,” The New York Times commented.

Hagia Sophia was first built 1,500 years ago as an Orthodox Christian cathedral and was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest in 1453.

The Hagia Sophia has been somewhat of an interfaith symbol for the past 85 or so years, since it stopped being a mosque.

When you see the picture at the beginning of this post, you will see that it has minarets–they were not part of the original building, but were added by the Turks after they conquered Constantinople, which they renamed to Istanbul. It has been considered a symbol of both the Greco-Roman religion and that of Islam.

On Friday, a Turkish court annulled a 1934 ruling that turned the Hagia Sophia into a museum, effectively paving the way for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to fulfill his promise to turn the formerly Christian site into a mosque. …

An article by Seth Franzman in J-Post noted that Erdogan’s speech in Turkish announcing the Hagia Sophia decision on Friday was translated slightly differently to Arabic and English, “apparently as a way to hide part of Ankara’s full views on how it has linked Hagia Sophia to a wider agenda.”

“In Arabic the speech says that turning Hagia Sophia into a mosque is part of the “return of freedom to al-Aqsa,” essentially meaning Israel should be ejected from controlling Jerusalem’s Old City where al-Aqsa is located.”

“Turkey’s president linked the decision to reviving Islam from Bukhara in Uzbekistan to Andalusia in Spain.” …

“Hagia Sophia was a huge victory for Islam. Just as Islam did to Hagia Sophia, that is what they intend to do to every church in the world,” Dr. Kedar said. “For the Muslims, that is the ultimate victory. Islam does not want to simply conquer or destroy the other religions. Their method, their goal, is to convert everything to the service of Allah. This is the main mission of Islam; to convert the entire world to Islam and the service of Allah, the people as well as the places.” …

The al-Aqsa mosque is in Jerusalem, in the area referred to as the “Temple Mount.” Some Jews want to knock it down in order to build a massive temple (see Why is a Jewish Temple in Jerusalem Not Required?) –the Muslims are quite opposed to that idea.

Turkish President Erdogan seems to want to tell the Islamic world he is on their side in Jerusalem and other matters.

As far as his statement from Uzbekistan (which is in Central Asia) to Spain goes, that is similar to the stated goal of the Muslim Brotherhood. Notice something from its website:

What is the Muslim Brotherhood?
The world’s largest and most influential Islamist movement. Founded in Egypt in 1928, the group was originally focused on ridding the country of corrupting secular influences brought by British colonial rule. Over the years, it established branches and affiliates in many countries to promote traditional Sunni Islamic morals, social justice, and the eradication of poverty and corruption. “The Islamic nation,” its charter states, “must be fully prepared to fight the tyrants and the enemies of Allah as a prelude to establishing an Islamic state”—ideally a re-established caliphate, stretching from Spain across the Middle East and Central Asia to Indonesia, to be governed according to Islamic sharia law. The Muslim Brotherhood apparently wants, as its top priority, a pan-national Islamic caliphate ruled by an Imam. It will not end up with Spain, if I understand certain aspects of Bible prophecy correctly, but the confederation of the final King of the South may go from around Western Sahara and/or Mauritania to Oman (with possible involvement and/or coordination with Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Pakistan and/or Indonesia).

It sound like the Turkish President and the Muslim Brotherhood want many lands united that will ultimately align with prophecies in Daniel 11 related to the coming King of the South. Notice:

40 “At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. 41 He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon. 42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. 43 He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. (Daniel 11:40-43)

“Edom” is a reference to Turkey. Turkey controls the old territory of the Byzantines.

The late WCG evangelist Raymond McNair wrote:

Daniel 11 also mentions some of the Mideast peoples who will be involved in that struggle among the nations at the close of this age. The belligerents will include the “King of the North,” the leader of the European Union (or its final outgrowth, called the “Beast”). The “King of the South” (an Islamic leader—apparently from Egypt {or} some other Muslim state) is also referred to. The following lands/peoples are specifically mentioned: Egypt, the Holy Land (Israel/Palestine), the Ethiopians (modern Cushites, south of Egypt), Libya, Edom, Moab and Ammon. Many descendants of the ancient peoples known as Edomites or Idumeans now live in the West Bank, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Arabia, Yemen, the Persian Gulf states, etc. (McNair R. Solving the Arab-Israeli Impasse! Copyright Raymond F. McNair 2005, Church of God—21st Century).

Yes, there will be a confederation of Arabic peoples and nations and Turkey will be involved.

But, before going further, understand that Daniel 11:41 shows that Turkey (Edom) will escape the coming destruction from the King of the North, despite being aligned for a time with the King of the South.

Interestingly, notice the following Catholic prophecy about Turkey and a “Great Arab” leader:

Nostradamus: The Great Arab shall progress well forward, But betrayed shall be by the Byzantines. (Turks).

Comment on above from Catholic writer Yves Dupont: Here, we are told that Turkey will break its faith with the rest of the Arab world. (Dupont, Yves. Catholic Prophecy: The Coming Chastisement. TAN Books, Rockford (IL), 1973, p. 107).

Dionysius of Luxemberg (died 1682): a. “After the birth of Antichrist the people of the world will be very wicked and godless … The churches will be dreary and empty like deserted barns … From the midst of His Church He will raise up a Christian ruler who will perform most remarkable deeds. With divine assistance this ruler will not only lead erring souls back to the true Faith but also deal a heavy blow to the foes of the empire; the Turks, to take away their empire and restore it to Christianity (Connor p.84).

The “Great Arab” is probably supposed to represent the Mahdi/Caliph, the final King of the South. The Turks currently control Byzantium and have for many centuries. Dionysius of Luxemberg seems to be saying that the Turks will betray an Islamic empire.

Hence, Catholic prophecy indicates that Turkey will betray the Islamic Arabic power. In the Bible, Daniel 11:25-26 is quite clear that an ally of the King of the South will betray the King of the South:

25 “He shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the South with a great army. And the king of the South shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand, for they shall devise plans against him. 26 Yes, those who eat of the portion of his delicacies shall destroy him; his army shall be swept away, and many shall fall down slain. (Daniel 11:25-26)

If Daniel 11:25-26 has future fulfillment (and as it seems to parallel Daniel 11:40-43 it looks to), it would seem that there will be close allies (like Turkey) that will betray the King of the South according to scripture as well.

So what do we make of all of this?

Well, for the time being, Turkey is moving further away from Europe and closer to the Islamic world (cf. Psalm 83:4-8). But this will not last.

Yes, in time, Turkey will will align, temporarily, with the King of the South. My experience with the Turks (my wife and I have been to Turkey 3 or 4 times) is that they are a pragmatic people. In time, they will see problems with the ambitions of the King of the South. This will lead to one or more leaders in Turkey betraying the King of the South to the King of the North,

Biblical prophecies concerning Turkey will come to pass.

The Hagia Sophia announcement, in my view, does align with properly understood biblical prophecies.
