Higher Food Prices Expected

COGwriter

Yesterday, a reader sent me a link that had the following:

Food security has global implications

“Prices for staple foods including corn will more than double in two decades unless action is taken, Oxfam International said last week. World grain stocks will fall for a second year by the end of June 2012, the International Grains Council said May 26.”

Food security is a defining challenge facing the human race, a serious threat to stability worldwide. Today, 1 billion men, women and children are food insecure. Unless we find better ways to produce and distribute food, this number will only increase.” http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0611/56342.html

World Food Prices Linger Near Record as Meat and Dairy Costs Gain, UN Says

Jesus foretold famines as part of the beginning of sorrows, and during the ride of the third horseman there will be food inflation:

7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. (Matthew 24:7-8)

5 When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.” (Revelation 6:5-6)

As far as when, I have speculated that it could start as soon as the Feast of Tabernacles in 2011 (which will be in October). And even if not, it appears signs for this to happen are building up, and many negative events are expected.

Yet, there is good news as ultimately, God’s kingdom will come and food shortages will be gone:

16 They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore (Revelation 7:16).

But a terrible hour of trial is coming first (Revelation 3:10; Jeremiah 30:7). But it too will end.

As Jesus said:

37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch! (Mark 13:36-37)

Tougher times are coming. And for some parts of the world these tougher time may be here now. People who can prepare, should: both spiritually and physically. Westerners need to realize that this will not only affect people in places like Africa, Asia, and the Middle East–the Anglo-descended nations of the West will themselves suffer hunger, civil unrest, famine, and worse.

Natural Disasters Increasing in Severity: Sorrows Increasing

Earth cracked by quake in Japan (Danny Choo)

COGwriter

Are severe natural disasters worsening?  According to a new report from 2009 to 2010 they have:

About 42 million people were forced to flee their homes because of natural disasters around the world in 2010, more than double the number during the previous year…The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre said the increase from 17 million displaced people in 2009 was mainly due to the impact of “mega-disasters”…

It said more than 90 percent of the disaster displacements were caused by weather-related hazards such as floods and storms that were probably impacted by global warming, but it couldn’t say to what extent.

“The intensity and frequency of extreme weather events is increasing, and this trend is only set to continue. With all probability, the number of those affected and displaced will rise as human-induced climate change comes into full force,” said Elisabeth Rasmusson, the secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council. (Amland BH. Millions displaced by natural disasters last year. Associated Press, June 5, 2011. http://www.ajc.com/news/nation-world/millions-displaced-by-natural-968478.html)

And the above does not include the Japanese earthquake, the recent increase in deaths via tornadoes in the USA, or a variety of other disasters in 2011.  And while there may be less people displaced in 2011 than 2010, natural disasters, including drought and floods are affecting multiple millions this year.

In an earlier update this year,  LCG reported::

Natural Disasters—A Sign from God? In the wake of Japan’s recent earthquake and tsunami, Tokyo’s governor referred to the events as tembatsu—or “divine judgment.” Mr. Ishihara subsequently apologized for his religious-sounding comments. However, many around the globe agree with Mr. Ishihara’s initial assessment. A recent poll of Americans revealed that about 40% view natural disasters as “a sign from God.” That number approaches 60% among Evangelicals, and drops significantly among Catholics and non-Evangelical “Christians” (Foxnews.com, March 24, 2011). As we approach the “end of the age”—as the Bible refers to it—students of the Bible understand that natural disasters, on land and at sea, will increase in intensity and frequency (Matthew 24:6-8; Revelation 6:5-8). The Caribbean hurricane season is predicted to be intense again this year and to start earlier in the southern Caribbean and western Gulf of Mexico. AccuWeather predicts “15 named storms from June 1 to November 30, eight of which will become hurricanes, with three major ones (category three or higher)” (www.nationnews.com, March 31, 2011). Although natural disasters will come, God also prophesies that a future time of peace will come when tears and sorrow will no longer exist (Revelation 21:4). God controls the weather and He will use it to punish nations that turn away from His laws. In the long-term, God will use the weather to bring blessings to nations that follow His laws. For more information on this important topic please review our intriguing booklet, Who Controls the Weather?

But these disasters are not part of the Great Tribulation.

Some may wonder, “Why all the problems now, if this is not the Great Tribulation? Surely they mean something.”

And surely they do. The Apostle Paul warned that in the last days, perilous times would come:

3:1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

We seem to be in those perilous times.

With all of the natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, related food shortages, and emerging pestilences in the past few years, perhaps this would be a good time to show people that these are to occur PRIOR to the “great tribulation”.

The disciples asked Jesus the sequence:

3 Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3)

Notice what Jesus taught in response:

4 And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. 9 Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.

15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be (Matthew 24:4-21).

Thus, recent items such as earthquakes, economic turmoils, and food shortages should, at most, be considered as related to “the beginning of sorrows” (which may or may not yet have started in their final intensity) and not the “great tribulation” itself.  The “great tribulation” does NOT begin until verse 21.  And while “tribulation” is involved in verse 9, this seems to be referring the persecuting tribulation that true Philadelphia Christians will face just prior to the great tribulation. But when the sacrifices stop and the abomination is set up (Daniel 9:27; 11:31), it will be time for the faithful to flee (see also There is a Place of Safety for the Philadelphians. Why it May Be Petra).

8 … And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be…troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

We may be at this prophetic point as all the earthquakes and other problems that have happened in the past year or so could be considered as “troubles”.

Natural disasters should serve as a wake-up call to all that the world can change very quickly and that the time to repent is now:

30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead. (Acts 17:30-31)

There are troubling times and repentance is needed now.  The increase in natural disasters seems to support the view (which I and many in LCG have, see also LCG: Beginning of Sorrows May Have Begun) that the prophesied “beginning of sorrows” has begun.  The rest of the prophetic sequence in Matthew 24 (and elsewhere in the Bible) will come to pass as well.

Second Jewish Temple Located?

The Ark of the Covenant

COGwriter

Here is a potentially interesting development:

2nd Jewish Temple just ‘waiting to be unearthed’
Archaeologist ‘absolutely sure’ structure beneath Jerusalem’s holy mount
June 5, 2011

One of the most prominent Israeli archaeologists declared today that remains from the First and Second Jewish Temple period – including the Second Temple itself – lie underneath the Temple Mount surface, just waiting to be excavated. Dr. Eilat Mazar of Hebrew University accused the site’s Islamic custodians of destroying Jewish artifacts while attempting to turn the Temple Mount into a “giant mosque.” http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=307697

The second Temple is discussed in the Old Testament books of Ezra and Haggai.  Some people, like Dr. Mazar, insist that the second Temple is on the area known as the Temple Mount.  Others have a different view.

It should perhaps be pointed out that a temple in Jerusalem is NOT required for Jews perform sacrifices according to the Bible (Ezra 3:6) and certain Jewish sources (like the current Sanhedrin). Bible prophecies related to sacrifices can be fulfilled even if no third temple is built during this age.

As the Europeans and Americans are now working on a peace plan for the Middle East it may be possible that a peace plan could allow for some type of temple activities (cf. Daniel 9:26-27), but I doubt that another temple will be built in this age–even if (and especially if) the Temple Mount is the correct location.

Why is a Jewish Temple in Jerusalem Not Required? Although people like Timothy LaHaye teach a third Jewish temple is required for end-time prophecies to be fulfilled, who is ‘the temple of God” in the New Testament? The Bible teaches that the sacrifices will be stopped (Daniel 9:27; 11:31), but do Jewish sources or the Bible mandate a completed temple for those sacrifices? What did Ezra do when there was no temple?

UK Writer Compares USA to Rome’s Decline

“I will break the pride of your power” (Leviticus 26:19)

COGwriter

Notice the following news item from a writer in the UK, named Larry Elliot, today:

America in 2011 is Rome in 200AD or Britain on the eve of the first world war: an empire at the zenith of its power but with cracks beginning to show.

The experience of both Rome and Britain suggests that it is hard to stop the rot once it has set in, so here are the a few of the warning signs of trouble ahead: military overstretch, a widening gulf between rich and poor, a hollowed-out economy, citizens using debt to live beyond their means, and once-effective policies no longer working. The high levels of violent crime, epidemic of obesity, addiction to pornography and excessive use of energy may be telling us something: the US is in an advanced state of cultural decadence.  http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2011/jun/06/us-economy-decline-recovery-challenges

I was pleased that he mentioned cultural decadence as one of the causes for the decline. Interestingly, the old Worldwide Church of God had a booklet titled Modern Romans that it produced in the 1970s that began with:

Massive public works … striking architecture … cosmopolitan cities … masters of advanced
warfare … bureaucratic institutions … a melting pot … and more!
These descriptions are as valid of Rome’s past achievements as they are of ours in our
dizzyingly sophisticated modern Western world.
In its time in history, the Roman Empire occupied a position of power and influence very
similar to that held by the United States or Western civilization in our time. We know more
about the Romans than any other great civilization of antiquity. And, interestingly enough, the
Roman Empire covered an area approximately the size of the United States.
The United States and the Rome of past glory both started out as struggling, insignificant
colonies of people ruled over by a monarchy. Injustices led to revolution and establishment of
a republic. Still later, after extensive expansions, they both were torn apart by civil war. But
then each settled down and rose to heights of undisputed world power and leadership.
The Roman superpower could boast, just like American or Western counterparts, of their
possession of a highly developed system of law and justice, government and order, and,
without doubt, production of goods and services. Western civilization, in fact, prides itself on
its Roman legacy.
But Rome crumbled!

The USA seems to be following ancient Rome.

For the USA and UK significant personal repentance is probably the only way out. National repentance for the USA seems highly unlikely as does seriously reversing its current decline.

Self-Appointed Two Witnesses

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Artist’s depicition of a man in black

COGwriter

Both today and yesterday I received information from different people claiming to be the two witnesses (the first one was a man and his daughter, and the second one was someone else who did not specify who the other witness supposedly was).  I have gotten so many emails informing me of such things that I tend to ignore them.

Of course, I do believe that God will raise up the two witnesses, and I believe that they are alive now.  However, I believe that they are very likely to be part of the Living Church of God, so when I get emails from people outside of the COG who make such claims (and who never have any real proof, just assertions) I feel that they can safely be eliminated from consideration.

Probably the most well known person who was ever part of a COG (and he was a minister in the old WCG as well as UCG) was Ronald Weinland.  Ronald Weinland is a self-appointed prophet and claimer to be one of the two witness.  Here is what he sent me in an email on January 20, 2006:

Yes I do make the claim. I am one of the witnesses.

It should be noted that the Bible shows that there will be false prophets (2 Peter 2:1-3) and Ronald Weinland has fulfilled that prophecy.

Ronald Weinland specifically “prophesied” that the USA would be nuked in 2008, that the great tribulation would begin in April 2008, and that the USA would not get a new president in 2008, all of which were proven wrong.  As partial “proof” of his claim that he the Great Tribulation began on April 17, 2008, he appointed his wife Laura the other of the two witnesses on that date.  Later, after the USA was not nuked, he changed the start date of the Great Tribulation to December 14, 2008, but continued to claim that his wife was still the other of the witnesses.

Perhaps I should mention that Ronald Weinland pronounced horrible curses on his critics on April 19, 2008. It was so strongly believed by a few, that on June 11, 2008, one of his supporters claimed that I was not posting as much about Ronald Weinland because I allegedly was ill from the result of the curse (see Desperation of a Weinland Follower).  He wanted me to come clean publicly and admit that I was afflicted by the curse.  But instead, my health, was and still, is excellent.  Hence, that curse did not affect me (nor anyone else that I am aware of, and that “curse” was supposed to demonstrate the “power” that Ronald Weinland allegedly received on April 17, 2008).

Yet, Ron Weinland’s primary “power” has been his ability to persuade a few people to take him seriously–despite him repeatedly being wrong.

Notice what the Bible teaches:

16 Thus says the Lord of hosts:

“Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you.
They make you worthless;
They speak a vision of their own heart,
Not from the mouth of the Lord.  (Jeremiah 23:16)

26 How long will this be in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies? Indeed they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart (Jeremiah 23:26).

Ronald Weinland has prophesied lies–the deceits of his own heart–he should not be listened to.

Notice also the following:

3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”

4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands standing before the God of the earth. 5 And if anyone wants to harm them, fire proceeds from their mouth and devours their enemies. And if anyone wants to harm them, he must be killed in this manner. 6 These have power to shut heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy; and they have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to strike the earth with all plagues, as often as they desire.  (Revelation 11:3-6)

Neither Ronald Weinland nor his wife has displayed any of the miraculous signs.  Nor have the people who have emailed me in the past or recently done so.  They are delusional.  Here is part of Ron Weinland’s May 20, 2011 explanation about why we are not seeing the type of biblical signs that Jesus said would happen during the Great Tribulation:

Jesus Christ is several years into the future. But the truth is, he is now only 53 weeks away from returning, so says the one whom God has appointed as the spokesman of these two witnesses and the one whom God has revealed that is also His final end-time apostle…In closing, rather than a full three and one-half years of great suffering from massive worldwide devastation, God’s two end-time prophets are witnesses of the mercy and patience of God.

So, he has attempted to change what the Bible says happens during the final 3 1/2 years prior to Jesus’ return.  Ron and Laura Weinland should re-read Matthew 24.

Furthermore, notice the following, also from the Bible:

3 I clothe the heavens with blackness, And I make sackcloth their covering (Isaiah 50:3).

12 I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood (Revelation 6:12).

The implication in the above scriptures is that biblical sackcloth is black–thus it seems that the two witnesses wear some cloth that is black, hence my use of the Men in Black photo at the beginning of this article.

Anyway Ronald Weinland is also into a bit of allegory regarding the two witnesses (and although I may have misunderstood him, he apparently does not intend to wear any type of sackcloth) as he wrote:

Notice: “And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth” (Revelation 11:3). The symbolism of “sackcloth” is given because these two will be filled with humility (Weinland, Ronald. 2008 – God’s Final Witness. Copyright © 2006 by the-end.com, inc., Cincinnati. Published October, 2006, pp.21-22).

While it is remotely possible that the two witnesses will not wear actual physical sackcloth, Revelation 11:13 is not speaking of just humility, but specifically that the clothing of the two witnesses will not be fancy–probably in contrast to the beast, who is likely to be flashy/wealthy in appearance. And in particular, I also suspect that the two witnesses actually will sometimes wear some literal sackcloth, at least at times. And that they will wear at least some black while they are publicly warning the world.

But the two witnesses will also receive power from God to do miraculous signs, not one of which those that emailed me (including Ronald Weinland) claiming to be one of the two witnesses has ever demonstrated.

Concerns About Ronald Weinland’s Church of God-Preparing for the Kingdom of God Ronald Weinland falsely claims to be one of the two witnesses God is raising up and that the Great Tribulation began in 2008.  This article contains documented evidence of many of his false prophecies.  He also has at least one other view that suggests that he is not truly part of the COG.

CERN Makes Major Strides with Antimatter

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

COGwriter

Over in Europe, CERN is moving ahead:

CERN scientists have now been able to isolate unstable antimatter for a grand total of nearly 17 minutes. That’s a far cry from experiments performed last fall, when scientists were only able to record the presence of antimatter for fractions of seconds. The increased longevity should now give researchers the time they need to perform studies on antiatoms related to change-parity-time reversal (CPT) symmetry.  http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2386429,00.asp

This is a major advance in a very short period of time.

The CERN project continues to advance, and is apparently the biggest physics project in the world–and of course, it is a European, not American, project.  Large physics projects tend to produce military weaponry.

My book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect points out that the Large Hadron Collider may be used to give the future European military power that the entire world will marvel at:

2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect

Bob Thiel
…the Large Hadron Collider…is apt to provide the Europeans with unique military capabilities in several years…The Bible is clear that the final “Beast power” (which will be primarily European) will have such unique military capabilities that the entire world will marvel (Revelation 13:3-4). (2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect. Nazarene Books, 2009, p. 85)

My book also discusses the destruction of the USA and certain others by the Europeans sometime after 2012. The Large Hadron Collider is discussed as one of the items that may provide the Europeans with the ability to overcome the USA’s military might.  And while many think that this would be impossible, as the Europeans continue to uncover “impossible” aspects of physics, it is getting more and more technology that could be developed in that direction.

The understanding of the Living Church of God that the Europeans will be able to attack and takeover the United States and its Anglo-descended allies (cf. Isaiah 10:5-11; Daniel 11:39) is correct and will come to pass. And it appears, to me at least, possible that the successes of the CERN to now store antimatter may assist in the fulfillment of those prophecies.

LCG: Fasting Has Cardiovascular Benefits

COGwriter

A couple of weeks ago, I posted an item about fasting (see Fasting).  In yesterday’s announcements at services, LCG reported the following:

Fasting Reduces Risk of Heart Disease.

In a study of more than 4,500 Mormons in Utah, researchers examined behaviors that were associated with lower risk of coronary artery disease—heart disease. After accounting for other factors (smoking, alcohol use, coffee and tea ingestion), researchers discovered that those who fasted routinely (without food or drink) were at lower risk for heart disease than those who did not fast. Fasting was also associated with lower diabetes risk (The American Journal of Cardiology, October 1, 2008). In the Old Testament, God direct His people to “afflict their soul” or fast as a tool for building humility and drawing closer to Him (see Leviticus 23:27; Esther 4:16; Psalm 35:13, 109:24; Isaiah 58:3-6). We see this behavior continued in the New Testament (Acts 27:9). Although many claim that God’s commands in the Old Testament were “nailed to the cross,” honest students of the Scriptures realize that God’s principles are consistent throughout the entire Bible (2 Timothy 3:16). Fasting is a tool that God intended to be used for spiritual purposes. However, there are also health benefits built into the practice of fasting—that modern research verifies! God said that those who keep His commandments and statutes would not be afflicted with diseases common among the Egyptians (Exodus 15:26). The historical record indicates that heart disease and diabetes were common diseases, especially among aristocratic Egyptians. While fasting is not the “magic bullet” for health, God has built in physical health benefits for those who routinely use this spiritual tool! (World Ahead Weekly Update. Living Church of God, June 2, 2011)

I have always suspected that fasting must reduce the risk of heart disease and it is nice that science is now coming to the same conclusion. Fasting is one of many tools that are available for Christians. Prayer, biblical meditation, and Bible study are some others.

Pentecost is Sunday, June 12, 2011

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Jesus taught, “narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it” (Matthew 7:14),. Pentecost pictures that only a few will find the way in this age–but implies that others will later.

A “straight and narrow way” in Tobago

Saturday night, beginning after sunset, until sunset Sunday June 12, 2011 is the Holy Day known as Pentecost. About 1,980 years ago, the disciples of Jesus were meeting together to observe this day (Acts 2). On that day the Holy Spirit was given and the New Testament Church began.

What many have not considered is that if the disciples of Jesus did not think that they should still be observing this so-called Jewish holiday, then they would not necessarily have been present together for the Holy Spirit to come.

This is a very significant point. Notice what the Bible teaches:

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place (Acts 2:1).

Notice that the emphasis is on the fact that the Day of Pentecost had fully come. The Bible is making it clear that the events that follow were directly related to the fact that the Day of Pentecost had fully come. And, it happened to the disciples as they were all observing it together.

The Living Church of God believes that the New Testament church began on Pentecost in 31 A.D. and that its observance in the Book of Acts shows that the early disciples clearly did believe that they were to continue to observe practices (Sabbaths, Holy Days, etc.) that the Jews did.

The Old Testament

Since the Holy Spirit was given on the Day of Pentecost, based upon the date and practices that God gave the children of Israel in the Old Testament, it is logical to conclude that the Old Testament can give us some insight into its meaning.

First of all the term Pentecost is a Greek term meaning 50th. That term is derived from the following Hebrew description of calculating the date:

And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed. Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath (Leviticus 23:15-16).

The Day of Pentecost has several names, and because of that, some have been confused about it. Its other names in the Bible include, the Feast of Harvest, the Feast of Weeks and the day of firstfruits:

… the Feast of Harvest, the firstfruits of your labors (Exodus 23:16).

And you shall observe the Feast of Weeks, of the firstfruits (Exodus 34:22).

Also on the day of the firstfruits, when you bring a new grain offering to the LORD at your Feast of Weeks, you shall have a holy convocation (Numbers 28:26).

While some Protestant commentators (e.g. Radmacher E.D. ed. The Nelson Study Bible. Thomas Nelson Publishers, Nashville, 1997, p213) refer to the wave sheaf offering as the feast of firstfruits, this is a misnomer. While “a sheaf of firstfruits” was offered then (Leviticus 23:10), as shown above, the Bible refers to the Feast of Weeks as the time of firstfruits (not simply one sheaf). And, as shown below, it refers to the time of counting fifty as being associated with firstfruits:

Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath; then you shall offer a new grain offering to the LORD. You shall bring from your dwellings two wave loaves of two-tenths of an ephah. They shall be of fine flour; they shall be baked with leaven. They are the firstfruits to the LORD (Leviticus 23:16-17).

Does the term firstfruits help us understand this day?

The New Testament Helps Explain the Old Testament

The New Testament does discuss some concepts associated with firstfruits.

Paul also wrote the following:

Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit (Romans 8:23).

Recall that it was the Holy Spirit that was first given on the Day of Pentecost. And that was a type of the firstfruits of the Spirit.

Who are the firstfruits?

These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb (Revelation 14:4-5).

In the Old Testament, God said:

“I found Israel Like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers As the firstfruits on the fig tree in its first season. But they went to Baal Peor…” (Hosea 9:10).

So originally, physical Israel was like the firstfruits on the branches of a fig tree, but they were unfaithful. In the New Testament, Paul alludes to this and Christians when he wrote:

For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, “Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.” Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either (Romans 11:16-21).

So while physical Israel was intended to be firstfruits, it was replaced by Christians as the firstfruits. And those firstfruits began on Pentecost.

But what about Jesus? Wasn’t He a type of firstfruits?

Yes, He certainly was. Paul notes:

But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming (1 Corinthians 15:20-23).

Christ is the fulfillment of the wave sheaf offering in Leviticus 23:10. He is the sheaf of firstfruits. He also fulfilled that role when He ascended into heaven on the Sunday (the wave sheaf offering was on a Sunday) after He was resurrected (John 20:1,17). But neither He nor His true followers observed what is now called Easter.

Also, James notes that Jesus brought us forth to also be a type of firstfruit:

Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures (James 1:18).

So while Jesus was the original firstfruit to represent the wave sheaf offering, true Christians are a kind of firstfruits, represented by the Day of Pentecost. “Firstfruits” mean that only a few will make it in this age–but they also imply that there will be a greater harvest–a time where all who never had an opportunity for salvation will later have an opportunity (for more scriptural references, please read the article Universal Offer of Salvation: There Are Hundreds of Verses in the Bible Supporting the Doctrine of True Apocatastasis).

(More of the wave-sheaf offering is included in the article What Happened in the Crucifixion Week?)

Pentecost pictures that the Christian elect are being called now as a type of firstfruits. Pentecost, however, is simply one step in God’s plan of salvation. The greater harvest, where all who have never truly understood God’s plan of salvation will be happen later. And that is pictured by the Fall Holy Day known as “the last great day” or sometimes simply called “the eighth day of the feast”.

Although some who profess Christ seem to believe otherwise, we in the Living Church of God believe:

20 Our God is the God of salvation (Psalms 68:20).

Some are called to it now, and others in the “age to come” (Matthew 12:31-32).

6 “all flesh shall see the salvation of God” (Luke 3:6).

Salvation will be offered to all who ever lived, a few in this age, and everyone else in the age to come (Matthew 12:31-32). The Bible shows that there is a time in the future that all flesh will come to God:

1 Praise is awaiting You, O God, in Zion; And to You the vow shall be performed. 2 O You who hear prayer, To You all flesh will come. (Psalm 65:1-2)

Does your church really understand that ALL FLESH will come to God?

Yemen’s President Flees

Another government of a nation that is part of the Arab League may have fallen:

Financial Times – ‎5 June 2011

Fears are growing of a power vacuum in Yemen after the president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, and several senior government ministers fled to Saudi Arabia on Saturday…

William Hague, the UK foreign secretary, told the BBC he was “very worried” about the threat to Britain if Yemen descending into chaos, describing it as “a much more serious threat’’ to UK national security.”

More and more governments have changed in the Middle East.  As I have long written here, I believe that they will be mainly replaced by semi-secular governments that ultimately will not deliver what the people want, and then be replaced by governments that will support a pan-national Islamic leader.

Ultimately the Bible tells of an Arabic confederation that will rise up with a leader that it calls the King of the South (Daniel 11:40-43).  The events in Yemen are one more step in that direction.

Dr. Winnail: Together on the Sabbath for a Reason

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Dr. Douglas Winnail

COGwriter

In his latest update, LCG’s Dr. D. Winnail had the following:

Together on the Sabbath—for a Reason! We are admonished in the Scriptures to encourage one another, “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some” (Hebrews 10:24-25). In the New Testament we see how the members of the early Church gathered together on the Sabbath “with one accord in one place” to worship, hear instruction and to fellowship with other believers (Acts 2:1; 13:14, 44). In doing so, they were following the commandment to “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Exodus 20:8) and the example of Jesus Christ (Luke 4:16) and the apostle Paul (Acts 17:2). Today, with easy access to personal television sets, computers and DVD or CD players, some assume that all that is necessary on the Sabbath is to stay home and watch a sermon. Yet this overlooks the importance of gathering together to worship and fellowship with other believers—which involves giving, sharing, learning to relate to other people and being part of a team. We have been called to become part of God’s family and commissioned to preach the Gospel of the coming Kingdom of God. The reality of that vision is enhanced when we come together on God’s Sabbath with others of like mind who share that same focus!

Many believe that they can be Christians and do not need to get together with others on the Sabbath, but they are in error (and I am NOT referring to those that cannot because of distance, health, etc.).
