UCG Reports Cattle Theft in Zambia & COGWA Somewhat Responds

Friday, October 7th, 2011

COGwriter

Received a rather bizarre email today that I found came from the personal website of Victor Kubik of the United Church of God (UCG).  Here is some of what it states:

The church’s home office was recently advised that some seven head of cattle have been tragically and wrongfully taken from members of United Church of God in remote areas of Zambia…The unhappy report that we received and verified related that these cattle were forcibly taken away by former friends or acquaintances of these victim-farmers. These former friends now belong to a Church of God fellowship largely comprised of former members and former ministers of the UCG. It is also our understanding from this report that the leader(s) of that fellowship refuse to intervene to stop the theft of these cattle by their members, nor have they condemned the actions that their members are taking. In any event, while United is doing what we can to recover the cattle taken and is working to prevent further confiscation of members’ cattle in Zambia, we know that God is aware of the entire scope of what is going on.

The Bible teaches:

5 You shall not steal.  (Exodus 20:15)

26 “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil. 28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. (Ephesians 4:26-28)

So, it would appear that those who took the cattle somehow believe that they are theirs, they are temporarily confused, and/or they are not really part of the Church of God.

P.S.  Clyde Kilough of COGWA forwarded an email from Zambia that included the following:

This is an open letter, and it may be shared with others. While I would normally try to avoid a public response to false allegations such as these, it is necessary to give an answer to your outrageous charges.
Let me note at the outset, it is with much regret that I write this letter; however, after the many months of your concerted efforts to drag me through the courts of this world, along with the actions of two of your ministers (one local, and one from the United States) in August, I feel that I must now address the postings and public “prayer requests” that you have spread abroad accusing myself and other members here in Zambia of theft…

We have not taken a single animal from your members. Such an action would be a crime, and more importantly, this would be a sin before God.
If you truly believe this has happened, then you believe that crimes have happened. Cattle rustling is a serious offence in Zambia, an offence for which one can be imprisoned. Since you have already shown yourself more than willing to resort to the legal process by filing lawsuits against a brother, why aren’t you willing to go to the police with these allegations? Why haven’t your informants in Zambia taken this story to law enforcement?…
On behalf of our brethren in Zambia, I beg you: refrain from any further slander or harassment. And also, please leave my brethren in the Church of God, a Worldwide Association out of this by holding back on any further innuendos regarding their leadership’s alleged involvement in this controversy (they have not been involved in this incident or in the recent litigation that you commenced, as these are local matters). I challenge you to critically examine yourself regarding your recent actions. I hope you are able to do this and keep God’s Feasts with a clear conscience.

There is more to both letters.  But both sides perhaps will try to work this out.

Day of Atonement Begins at Sunset Tonight

History of Early Christianity

COGwriter

The Christian Day of Atonement is based on the English translation of the Jewish Holy day Yom Kippur. It began tonight at sunset tonight, October 7, 2011 and lasts until sunset October 8, 2011.

In the original Hebrew, the Bible calls the day Yom Hakippurim (Hebrew for “Day of the Atonements”).

The day is commemorated with a 25-hour fast by some Jews, but normally a 24 hour fast by Christians who observe it (see  also Spiritual Benefits of Fasting). While not observed by the mainstream of professing Christianity, the Christian groups (mostly those with origins in the old Worldwide Church of God) that do observe it usually refer to it as the Day of Atonement.

Because it is endorsed in the Bible, we in the Living Church of God observe the Day of Atonement.

While it is mentioned in the Hebrew scriptures (the Old Testament), the focus of today’s article will be the New Testament and post-New Testament.

The Day of Atonement in New Testament Times

Bible believing Christians recognize that Jesus Christ’s sacrifice is an atonement sacrifice to reconcile us to God. Notice what the Apostle Paul wrote:

18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18-19).

Christians that observe the Day of Atonement normally teach that on that day they are to be at one with God. And that fasting humbles them and makes them realize how dependent they are on God for all their needs. They also believe that they are dependent upon the sacrifice of Jesus for their salvation, but that Satan does play a role in encouraging people to sin.

The Living Church of God states this about the Day of Atonement (and more detail is in the article The Day of Atonement–Its Christian Significance):

Old Testament meaning
…A day of fasting and repentance, known to the Jews as Yom Kippur (Leviticus 23:26-32)

New Testament meaning
…Pictures the binding of Satan at the beginning of the Millennium and the world becoming at one with God.

The New Testament shows that the the Gentile Gospel writer Luke knew about the Day of Atonement, when he wrote:

…sailing was now dangerous because the Fast was already over (Acts 27:9).

What was Luke referring to according to Protestant commentators? Why the day of Atonement. Notice two such commenataries (note italics/bolding are from the sources cited):

Acts 27:9-11… Sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was already past, that is, the famous yearly fast of the Jews, the day of atonement, which was on the tenth day of the seventh month, a day to afflict the soul with fasting (from Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible: New Modern Edition, Electronic Database. Copyright (c) 1991 by Hendrickson Publishers, Inc.).

Acts 27:8-9… The fast to which Luke refers is the Day of Atonement (from The Wycliffe Bible Commentary, Electronic Database. Copyright (c) 1962 by Moody Press).

The fact that Luke used that term for a Christian audience (Acts 1:1) strongly indicates that the Day of Atonement was known, recognized, and observed by early Christians.

Post New Testament

This is further substantiated in a Jewish account (reported in the Talmud), as related by a Catholic scholar may also be helpful here. It is recorded that an early second century Christian named Jacob (100-120 AD) with a Jewish scholar discussed the Day of Atonement and the Christian Jacob explained how it helped show “Christ head of the angels” (Bagatti, Bellarmino. Translated by Eugene Hoade. The Church from the Circumcision. Nihil obstat: Marcus Adinolfi. Imprimi potest: Herminius Roncari. Imprimatur: +Albertus Gori, die 26 Junii 1970. Franciscan Printing Press, Jerusalem, p.97).

And of course, when God has an angel bind Satan (Revelation 20:1) this will be another related fulfillment for the Day of Atonement.

Furthermore, it is known that in the first and second century, Polycarp of Smyrna kept both the Spring Holy Days and the Fall Holy Days.

The keeping of these days, however, was condemned by John Chrysostum near the end of the fourth century. He specifically condemned observing the Day of the Fast that the Jews also kept (see Did Early Christians Observe the Fall Holy Days?):

The festivals of the pitiful and miserable Jews are soon to march upon us one after the other and in quick succession: the feast of Trumpets, the feast of Tabernacles, the fasts. There are many in our ranks who say they think as we do. Yet some of these are going to watch the festivals and others will join the Jews in keeping their feasts and observing their fasts.

This condemnation, though, is specific proof that some who professed Christ still observed the Day of Atonement into the fourth century.

Additionally, comments by Jerome and Epiphanius near that time concerning the Nazarene Christians would also seem to support that those who kept the Holy Days, such as Atonement, were located in several areas at that time (see Nazarene Christianity: Were the Original Christians Nazarenes?).

Notice that the Sabbath-keepers in Transylvania in the 1500s (and probably later) kept the Fall Holy Days such as the Day of Atonement:

The Sabbatarians viewed themselves as converted Gentiles..They held to the biblical holidays…The Day of Atonement was a day of fasting, although they emphasized that pentinence is more easily acheived by a peaceful and quiet meditation on the law and one’s life than by fasting. (Liechty D. Sabbatarianism in the Sixteenth Century. Andrews University Press, Berrien Springs (MI), 1993, pp. 61-62).

People attempting to be faithful to the Bible have observed the Day of Atonement and we in the Living Church of God continue to do so in the 21st century.

Jesus and Paul observed this day, do you?

Israel Calls Up Two Military Divisions for Yom Kippur Concerns

Israel was attacked on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) in 1973.  It wants to take less chances in 2011:

The IDF is taking no chances on the eve of Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur begins tonight at sunset.

As I have been writing for a while, there is a real concern that there will be a regional way involving Jerusalem.  And this may have to happen before the peace deal that Daniel 9:27 says will happen.  We will see.

UCG on Steve Jobs

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

COGwriter

Late today, the United Church of God (UCG) sent out an email related to the following:

Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, Inc. died yesterday, October 5, 2011. Many of the products he oversaw his company produce have been smashing successes…

Steve points you to following your heart. I would point you to following Jesus Christ.  Steve Jobs has left a legacy of the bold pursuit of excellence in consumer electronics.  Let’s each of us leave a legacy of boldly serving God every single day.

I here is something I saw about Steve Jobs earlier today:

The spiritual side of Steve Jobs
CNN – Oct 5, 2011 excerpts…
Jobs took a spiritual retreat to India and regularly walked around his neighborhood and the office barefoot. Traversing India sparked Jobs’ conversion to Buddhism. Kobun Chino, a monk, presided over his wedding to Laurene Powell, a Stanford University MBA.
Perhaps the most salient of those values is, simply, to make an outsize impact on society. Or, as Jobs put it, “We’re here to put a dent in the universe.”
Those who worked for Jobs described him as a tyrant they feared meeting in an elevator.

Although I am unaware of the degree of religious beliefs that Steve Jobs held, even though he was not part of the Living Church of God, he, like almost all others outside of the COGs, should still have an opportunity for salvation.  And yes, we believe that all must ultimately repent, believe in Jesus, and profess Christ in order to be saved per Acts 2:38 & 4:10-12, hence Buddhists too need to eventually convert (and I believe that nearly all will after the resurrection in Revelation 20:5,11-13).

There is also a meaning to life that Steve Jobs did not seem to understand.  But you can if you really want to.

Halloween and Other Non-Christian Holidays

Halloween in Ireland

COGwriter

Many will be observing “Halloween” the end of this month. Many consider that it is a holiday appropriate for “Christians.”  But Halloween is of pagan origin.

Of course, most holidays celebrated in the Western cultures are of pagan origin. Notice a few other comments:

Bruce Forbes, professor or religious studies at Morningside College and a bona fide expert on Christmas… is looking at five American holidays that he describes as “three-layered cakes.” The holidays — Christmas, New Year’s Day, Easter…and Halloween — all started as seasonal celebrations before Christianity existed.

“The dead of winter or spring with fertility or fall with the harvest…it makes sense that human beings would have celebrations at different seasonal times. That’s layer No. 1,” Forbes said of the pagan feasts.

Christianity comprises layer No. 2 as it comes across various cultures and wants to take what is already there, a natural human thing, and tie in a special layer of Christian meaning. “So instead of totally getting rid of it, they want to kind of baptize it with Christian meaning,” Forbes said.

As for layer No. 3, that comes in the form of modern pop culture and the resulting commercialization and mass media promotions. His Christmas book dealt with this in depth. And Halloween, he said, fits all the criteria. http://www.siouxcityjournal.com/special-section/siouxland_life/article_02bae036-a30a-52a5-aa30-2f4716312be3.html

Halloween should not be celebrated by Christians.

Van Rompuy: No Alternative to the Euro

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Herman Van Rompuy

COGwriter

Herman van Rompuy appears to be trying to calm the financial markets as well as the European Union in general related to the Euro:

Van Rompuy Says There’s ‘No Alternative’ to Euro, Trends Reports

Bloomberg – Andrew Clapham – ‎6 October 2011

The euro will survive the sovereign- debt crisis because there is “no alternative,” European Union President Herman Van Rompuy said in an interview with Trends. “We stand probably before the most difficult phase in the history of the euro,” the magazine quoted Van Rompuy as saying.

While I have written in the past that the Euro could possibly be replaced (see my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect), and still could be, if we are as close to the end of humankind’s 6000 years of self-rule as it seems that we may be (see Does God Have a 6,000 Year Plan? What Year Does the 6,000 Years End?), then there may not be enough time for an alternative to the Euro.  We will see.

Yet, notice that Van Rompuy’s influence seems to be increasing as was reported a few days ago:

Growing clout of Van Rompuy critical to Merkel-Sarkozy alliance

Irish Times – Arthur Beesley – ‎Oct 3, 2011‎

Merkel remains a pre-eminent figure in the expanding debt crisis…To do this, however, she needs the support of two key allies. The first is Nicolas Sarkozy, the frenetic French president. The second is European Council president Herman Van Rompuy, who runs the assembly of EU heads of state and government. Whenever there is a deal to be done, it falls to him to do much of the arm-twisting.

The trend in Europe is to go for a stronger leader. And ultimately, a major dictator (and no, I have never felt that the final one would be Herman van Rompuy) will rise up (Revelation 17:12-13), the final King of the North, European Beast power of Bible prophecy.  But he is helping set the stage for such a leader.  Watch (Mark 13).

Erskine Overnight on 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect

Erskine of Erskine Overnight read my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect.  Here are a couple of things he wrote about it:

Dr. Bob Thiel has published scores of articles and received numerous awards for his research. His latest book 2012: and the Rise of the Secret Sect is an astonishing revelation of ancient prophecies and their relevance today.
It was TERRIFIC reading the book. It’s the BEST I’ve seen on 2012.
Dr. Thiel REALLY does his research. Also, the photos in the book his wife took are exquisite.

I taped a radio interview with him Friday that aired over the weekend.  The interview is now available at Dr. Bob Thiel (6.6 megabytes).

The fact that world events have aligned with many predictions in the book was impressive to him.  My primary focus in that book on what would likely happen during the years 2012 through 2020. But of course, for many of the events to occur, other world events need to align themselves for them to come to pass.  And at least 17 have.  Many outside the Church of God are impressed when they learn that world events have aligned with so many prophecies we have explained.

If you have not already done so, you should consider acquiring the book, 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect. It is available in several languages, as well as through Kindle and Barnes&Noble.com.

26,000 Protest Austerity in Greece, Others to Protest in USA

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Greek Riots, 2008

COGwriter

There have been developments in Greece:

5 October 2011

Greek civil servants strike, paralyzing gov’t

(AP) ATHENS, Greece – Angry and frustrated, Greek civil servants walked off the job Wednesday, paralyzing the government and public transport to protest ever-deeper austerity measures and seemingly ineffectual financial policies. As Greece struggles to avoid a catastrophic default, demonstrators in Athens expressed outrage…At least 16,000 protesters converged in central Athens, and another 10,000 gathered in the northern city of Thessaloniki, chanting slogans, banging drums and blowing whistles. The vast majority of demonstrators were peaceful, but a few dozen protesters near parliament threw stones at riot police, who fired tear gas.  http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/10/05/501364/main20115901.shtml

I essentially warned about this over a year ago (see 5 September 2010 post titled Civil War in Greece?) as I wrote, “Austerity measures in Europe will likely cause civil unrest.”

Expanded civil unrest will have major impacts on the euro and on Europe itself.   It is highly likely that riots and civil unrest will later propel a European leader to rise up. The final leader will be the one known as the Beast (Revelation 13:3-4) and final King of the North (Daniel 11:22-44) of Bible prophecy.  I believe we will see more violent protests in Europe.

Additionally, in my book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect, I discussed the possibility of civil unrest and/or civil war breaking out in Europe as that is consistent with both biblical and certain non-biblical prophecy. Here are a couple of captions from my 2009 book about that:

Some believe that God will punish the nominal Catholics with civil unrest and war in Europe. As there already has been civil unrest in Europe (and according to secular sources, more is expected), it is possible that the following (to some degree) also may come to pass:..

Monk Hilarion (15th century): “The people of the peninsula of Europe will suffer by needless wars…”

Brother Louis Rocco (19th century): “All over Europe there will rage terrible civil wars…A Great Monarch will arise after a period of terrible wars and persecutions in Europe.”

Some believe this civil unrest will result in the rise of a militaristic leader who will quell that particular violence, establish a new religious order, and reign with a pope who will perform miracles…

The descriptions of the Great Monarch/Prince in many ways parallel the description of one the Bible refers to as the “prince” in Daniel 9:26–27, final “King of the North” in Daniel 11:27–45…

World events are aligning with prophecy. Future protests may turn quite violent and this may be a major trigger for the rise of the prophesied final King of the North.

There will be ups and downs in Europe until the final European beast power rises up.

The Bible is clear that although there will be problems with the unnatural combination that we now call Europe, that it still will rise up. NOtice:

40 And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron, inasmuch as iron breaks in pieces and shatters everything; and like iron that crushes, that kingdom will break in pieces and crush all the others. 41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. 45 Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold — the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure. (Daniel 2:40-45)

Notice that according to what it written in the Book of Daniel, a kingdom will arise that does not adhere well together–yet that it is certain to rise up anyway. Also notice that afterwards, the Kingdom of God will come and that the kingdoms of the world will be destroyed–and that is sure.

The types of protests in Greece, and other parts of Europe will likely have ups and downs. And it is almost certain that because of protests and other forms of civil unrest, that the Europeans will be more willing to accept the type of militaristic leader that the Bible teaches will lead the final beast empire (Revelation 13:1-4). And this is despite the fact that to the outside world (as well as to Europeans themselves) the rise of the final Beast power will be partly strong and partly fragile. Many see Europe as fragile, and while they have a point, the Bible indicates that final human kingdom will rise up anyway (though the Kingdom of God will ultimately replace it).

Of course, Europe is not the only place that protests, riots, and civil unrest will occur.  There have been protests in the USA and they may increase:

Unions endorse, will join Occupy Wall Street protests

‎CNN – Jason Kessler – 5 October 2011
As the Occupy Wall Street protesters rally for a third week, social media sites such as Twitter seem to be spurring similar protests in other cities…The association says the protest will be part of the opening day activities for a national nursing convention in Boston. In New York, several unions endorsed the Occupy Wall Street movement and plan to join the protesters’ street theater Wednesday, labor leaders said.

As support grows for protests in the USA, people should not be surprised when they turn violent.  Riots, and much worse, will happen in the USA.  FWIW, chapter 8 of my 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect book is titled Barack Obama, Islam, and the End of America.  And at least 7 predictions in that chapter have already came to pass or have started to come to pass.

ALERT Academy Family Camp Slated Next Week
By REBECCA HOEFFNER

Families will gather at the International ALERT Academy in Big Sandy next week for its 11th annual family camp…

Three guests also will speak at the event.

The biblical Feast of Tabernacles begins next week (sunset Wednesday) and that is what used to be observed on the grounds of Big Sandy.  Big Sandy once was a campus of Ambassador College when it was part of the old Worldwide Church of God (the campus was sold several years ago).

In 1980, I attended the Feast of Tabernacles in Big Sandy.  I was one of very few who actually simply brought a very small tent and lived in it during the Feast.  In addition to dealing with mosquitoes, I recall that it rained so much that if I were to have turned to one side or the other in my tent while sleeping, I would have gotten soaked as rain water came into my supposedly water resistant tent.

Near the end of the Feast, a family with a large camper felt pity on me.  If I recall correctly, they let me spend one or two nights in their large modern camper (or travel trailer).

But getting back to the main point of what this post is supposed to be about, God’s Holy Days used to be kept at the Big Sandy campus, but are no longer.  We in the Living Church of God believe that God’s Holy Days help better reveal God’s plan of salvation.  A message that tends to not be understood by the Protestant groups.  Simply utilizing the grounds of the Big Sandy campus for a family camp will not restore the truth about salvation to them.

But studying the Bible, observing the Holy Days, prayer, and careful consideration of these matters might.

California ‘Permanently Legalizes’ Ancient Practice of Circumcision

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

COGwriter

California has decided to keep circumcision legal:

Calif. gov signs bill to stop circumcision bans

The above was done because some municipalities in California were trying to ban male circumcision.

Last summer, I read an article by San Luis Obispo medical doctor Steven Sainsbury who advocated various benefits for males being circumcised (Debunking Circumcision Myths The Tribune, July 21, 2011, page B5). Some of the facts he presented were:

  1. Male circumcision lowers human papilloma virus (HPV) in female partners.
  2. Male circumcision confers an element of protection from HIV (and he cited a USA study)
  3. Uncircumcised males can get their foreskins swollen, sometimes in a dangerous fashion called paraphimosis.
  4. Uncircumcised males are more likely to get a urinary obstruction called phimosis.
  5. Uncircumcised males are more likely to have hygiene problems.

He also mentioned that the procedure for infants has little, if any pain, especially since a local anesthesia is now being used.

Thousands of years ago, God told Abraham to implement circumcision:

9 And God said to Abraham: “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. 12 He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. 13 He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.” (Genesis 17:9-14)

Later, the Old Testament also provided instruction to the children of Israel to circumcise their male babies:

1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a woman has conceived, and borne a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as in the days of her customary impurity she shall be unclean. 3 And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. (Leviticus 12:1-3)

(Note: Male circumcision is nothing like so-called female circumcision, which is NOT enjoined in the Bible and should not be done.)

Jesus once stated:

22 Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. (John 7:22)

Now, although the New Testament teaches that Gentile adult males do not have to be circumcised in order to be Christians (Acts 15:24-29), the Apostle Paul had Timothy circumcised anyway (Acts 16:3).

Even though the apostles ruled that adult Gentiles did not have to be circumcised in Acts 15, my own reading into early church history suggests that many Christians continued to circumcise their male babies after this declaration (though not necessarily in all Sabbath-keeping groups).

The early 20th century theologian J.J.L. Ratton reported:

The early Church at Jerusalem, retained most of the distinctive customs of the Jews, such as circumcision, kosher meats, the Jewish Sabbath, the Jewish rites, and worship of the Temple. Our Lord, Himself, lived the exterior life of a Jew, even so far as the observance of Jewish religious customs was concerned. The early Church of Jerusalem followed His example. The Jews looked upon the Hebrew Christians in Jerusalem simply as a Jewish sect, which they called the sect of the Nazarenes. (Ratton JJL The Apocalypse of St. John: a commentary on the Greek text, 2nd edition. R. & T. Washbourne, ltd., 1915. Original fromt he University of Michigan. Digitized Jun 12, 2007, p. 4)

The historian E. Gibbon wrote:

The first fifteen bishops of Jerusalem were all circumcised Jews; and the congregation over which they presided united the law of Moses with the doctrine of Christ. (Gibbon, Edward ; Eckler, Peter. History of Christianity: Comprising All that Relates to the Progress of the Christian Religion in “The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire,” and A Vindication of Some Passages in the 15th and 16th Chapters. Published by P. Eckler, 1916. Original from the New York Public Library. Digitized Jun 19, 2006, p. 117)

Now, it should be mentioned that in the second century, non-Nazarene professors of Christ, like the heretic Justin, did not practice circumcision.

According to the fourth century Catholic historian Eusebius, starting in the first century:

James, the first that had obtained the episcopal seat in Jerusalem after the ascension of our Saviour…The first, then, was James, the so-called brother of the Lord; the second, Symeon; the third, Justus; the fourth, Zacchæus; the fifth, Tobias; the sixth, Benjamin; the seventh, John; the eighth, Matthias; the ninth, Philip; the tenth, Seneca; the eleventh, Justus; the twelfth, Levi; the thirteenth, Ephres; the fourteenth, Joseph; and finally, the fifteenth, Judas. These are the bishops of Jerusalem that lived between the age of the apostles and the time referred to, all of them belonging to the circumcision. (Eusebius. The History of the Church, 2005 Book III, Chapter V, Verses 2,3.& Book IV, Chapter 5, Verses 2-4 . Translated by A. Cushman McGiffert. Digireads.com Publishing, Stilwell (KS), pp. 45, 71)

But circumcision was not just the practice with the first and second century bishops of Jerusalem. Epiphanius wrote of this group from the time of 69/70 A.D. until his day, that he called the Nazarenes:

All Christians were called Nazarenes once…They were so-called followers of the apostles…they dedicate themselves to the law…However, everyone called the Christians Nazarenes as I said before. This appears from the accusation against Paul…[Acts 24:5]…For they use not only the New Testament but also the Old…For they also accept the resurrection of the dead and that everything has origin in God…Only in this respect they differ from the Jews and Christians: with the Jews they do not agree because of their belief in Christ, with the Christians because they are trained in the Law, in circumcision, the Sabbath and the other things…(Epiphanius. Panarion 29 as cited in Pritz R. Nazarene Jewish Christianity. Magnas, Jerusalem, 1988, pp. 30-34)

Notice the following, by the scholar B. Pixner:

…after Jerusalem was rebuilt as a Roman city named Aelia Capitolina — to obliterate any associations with the Jews — and Hadrian was succeeded by a much milder emperor named Antoninus Pius (138-161 A.D.), the Judeo-Christians drifted back to Mt. Zion. (Pixner B. Church of the Apostles Found on Mt. Zion. Biblical Archaeology Review, May/June 1990)

Their adherence to Jewish customs, especially circumcision and observance of Jewish holy days, naturally alienated the “Nazarene” Christians from the church that distanced itself away from many practices it considered to be Jewish.

Here is some of what the Catholic scholar Bagatti wrote about some of the gentile Nazarenes in the fourth and probably fifth centuries, that were sometimes derisively referred to as Minim by some Jews:

In fact some Minim of gentile stock, following St. Paul, taught that the Law had been abolished with the exception of the Decalogue…Some Jews…intensified the observance of the Law…especially regarding circumcision and the Sabbath. The Judaeo-Christians in this were in accord with the Jews…(Bagatti, Bellarmino. Translated by Eugene Hoade. The Church from the Circumcision. Nihil obstat: Marcus Adinolfi, 13 Maii 1970. Imprimi potest: Herminius Roncari, 14 Junii 1970. Imprimatur: +Albertus Gori, die 26 Junii 1970. Franciscan Printing Press, Jerusalem, 1971, p. 108)

While it was not a required practice, throughout history, many “Nazarene” Christians have practiced circumcision, not as a commandment, but as a biblically-based concept.

One of the inquisitors in the Middle Ages found that a certain type of “heretic” (in his mind) uniformly observed the Sabbath and sometimes (though apparently not always) observed circumcision (Davis, Tamar. A General History of the Sabbatarian Churches. 1851; Reprinted 1995 by Commonwealth Publishing, Salt Lake City, p. 88).

Thus, it seems that circumcision was (and still is) often practiced by many trying to be faithful Christians. And because of “Judeo-Christian influence” (like from the Bible), this may be why there have always been a relatively high proportion of circumcised males in the USA (though this may be changing).

While the Bible does not list health benefits that come from circumcision, it would make sense that the Creator of the universe would only recommend physical practices that were beneficial for His human creation.
