CT: Valentine’s Day and 1 John

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

COGwriter

Valentine’s Day is observed by many in February. As in prior years, in addition to seeing store displays and tv & print ads, I noticed that the falsely labeled Christianity Today (CT) is again compromising from biblical principles in order to attempt economic gain as it is promoting some jewelry purchases on its “Valentine’s Day” page.

CT seems to try to justify this by talking about love, as this is what its Valentine’s page currently begins with:

February 14

1 John 4:7
Let us love one another, for love comes from God. (NIV)

The implication of the above was that the Apostle John somehow supports Valentine’s Day.  The misuse of this scripture here is appalling.

But what is the love of God?

2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith.  (1 John 5:2-4)

Valentine’s Day has more to do with lust than love–Valentine’s Day is not from the Father but from the world.  Notice what the Apostle John wrote a couple of chapters earlier in the same book:

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.  (1 John 2:15-17, NKJV)

Valentine’s Day is a worldly holiday, essentially built upon lust of the eyes and the pride of life.  It will pass away, it is not a true Christian holiday.

An article on Valentine’s Day from CT stated:

So why do people send “valentines” or “love-tokens” to one another on that day? The origin of that tradition is not thought to have any connection with the saint’s day. Rather it comes from an early European belief that the second week of February was when birds began to mate. The idea suggests that lovers should probably exchange notes and gifts on February 14 in conjunction with what nature practiced. It then concludes with “Nowadays, Valentine’s Day is observed as a special day for love and romance. This topic is one of the oldest, and probably most-discussed, issues in history! As Christians, we know that love originates from God and that God is love (1 John 4:16).

Love comes from God, but paganism is a lie, and lies originated from the devil (cf. John 8:44).  Compromise with pagan traditions for membership and/or economic factors is essentially one of the major areas that separates those truly in Christ’s Church from those who think that they are part of it.  Furthermore, those in Christ’s Church try to live their lives in accordance with the law of God as Jesus and the original apostles did. Days that were compromises with paganism were not endorsed by Jesus or His early followers.

The same Apostle John who wrote that Christians were not supposed to be worldly but were to keep God’s commandment was not at the same time telling them to ignore the Bible and adopt pagan-compromised practices.  But CT seems to want people to think otherwise.

And just because people use the name of Christ and call themselves Christian does not mean that they are faithful.

Notice what Jesus taught:

21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ (Matthew 7:21-23)

John did not observe Valentine’s Day or anything close to it.

Valentine’s Day is not a biblical holiday.

The modern practice of giving cards to ask/tell someone to “be my Valentine” seems to be a holdover from the ancient sexual lottery.

Christians who may be tempted to compromise need to ask themselves if the origins of Valentine’s Day are biblical or pagan.

None who profess Christ should observe this February “holiday”–it simply is not a Christian holiday. It began as a sexual lottery and still has sexual ramifications, even in the 21st century.  And CT seems to partially promote it to sell merchandise.  That is not what love is all about.

9 EU Nations Pushing for Financial Transaction Tax

Crown of the Beast of Revelation?
Crown of the “Austro-Hungarian Empire” & the “Holy Roman Empire”

Some of the nations of the EU seem determined to push for at least a limited scope financial tax to raise money for the EU:

Nine EU countries form splinter group on financial tax

8 February 2012

By Valentina Pop

BRUSSELS – A group of nine euro-countries led by France and Germany on Tuesday (7 February) asked the Danish EU presidency to fast-track plans for a financial transactions tax – a move indicating they will forge ahead on their own in the absence of an EU-wide consensus.

“We strongly believe in the need for a financial transactions tax implemented at European level as a crucial instrument to secure a fair contribution from the financial sector to the costs of the financial crisis and to better regulate European financial markets,” the letter says.

The nine signatories are the finance ministers of France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Greece, Spain, Portugal and the Prime Minister of Italy, Mario Monti, who also holds the finance portfolio…For its part, the EU Commission estimates that over €50 billion could be raised within the bloc if such a tax was introduced.  http://euobserver.com/19/115164

So, nine nations want to raise an additional €50 billion to help finance the EU, while others disagree–yet the proposal is likely to move forward at least in some way.

The idea that part or all of Europe may not be fully unified is consistent with Bible prophecy as Daniel recorded:

42 And as the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly fragile. 43 As you saw iron mixed with ceramic clay, they will mingle with the seed of men; but they will not adhere to one another, just as iron does not mix with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. (Daniel 2:42-44)

Yet, the part of the Bible that I wish to focus on now is Daniel 11:20.  Let’s look at a few differing translations:

English Standard Version (©2001)
“Then shall arise in his place one who shall send an exactor of tribute for the glory of the kingdom. But within a few days he shall be broken, neither in anger nor in battle.

World English Bible
Then shall stand up in his place one who shall cause a tax collector to pass through the kingdom to maintain its glory; but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.

King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)
Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle.

The above verse seems to convey the idea that taxes will be raised for the glory of the northern kingdom (Europe in the end).  And if an EU-wide tax (or perhaps even a near-EU wide tax) is implemented and EU President Herman von Rompuy dies shortly after it is implemented, it may be that he is the “exactor of tribute/raiser of taxes” that Daniel 11:20 is referring to.  Of course, it could be someone else, and this may not be the type of tax this verse applies to.

And while the current 9 nation proposal is new, it is somewhat consistent with one partially proposed by EU President Herman von Rompuy in 2011 (see Van Rompuy’s Tax Plan May Get Approved).  And President von Rompuy is one that I have wondered about for several years who might fulfill Daniel 11:20 (see Herman Van Rompuy Takes Office Today: Might He Fulfill Daniel 11:20?), presuming that it has an end time application–and I suspect that it does.

The Bible shows that Europe will reorganize into ten kingdoms and get an autocratic leader (Revelation 17:12-13).  It may have to have taxes raised before this happens.   2012 may well prove to be an interesting year, prophetically.

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad (Source: Agência Brasil, Wikipedia)

Today’s news has the following:

BusinessWeek – ‎By Emre Peker Feb. 8 (Bloomberg) — Syria’s violence is heading toward an “intolerable point,” Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said, as he called for an international coalition to stop President Bashar al-Assad’s deadly crackdown.Turkey’s initiative follows Russia and China’s Feb. 4 veto of a United Nations resolution supported by the Arab League, European Union and the U.S. aimed at ending the violence, which has led to 5,400 deaths since March. The veto gives the impression the deaths will “go unanswered” by the world and it would be “naïve” to expect change from Assad, Davutoglu said.

Turkey is looking to establish the “most broad-based” coalition, which should include members of the UN Security Council, Organization of the Islamic Conference, and Arab states, Davutoglu said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was in Damascus yesterday, where Assad pledged a new constitution and asked Russia to broker talks with the opposition.

The situation with Syria is getting tense for nearly all involved.  Notice also something else from today’s news:

EU threatens new sanctions on Syria

Fox News – 8 February 2012

BEIRUT — The European Union will impose harsher sanctions on Syria, a senior EU official said Wednesday, as Russia tried to broker talks between the vice president and the opposition to calm violence. Activists reported at least 50 killed in military assaults targeting government opponents. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who held emergency talks in Damascus with Syrian President Bashar Assad on Tuesday, is trying to end Syria’s 11-month-old bloody uprising, which has left more than 5,400 dead, according to the U.N.

The Bible tells of a time where there will be various deals involving the Europeans and the Arabs (Daniel 9:27; 11:27; Psalm 83:4-8).  The EU support of the goals of the Arab League position on Syria will likely not go unnoticed, and may help set the stage for one or more of those deal.

In addition to getting some diplomatic support from Russia and China , Syria is also getting military support from Iran (02/06/12):

A top Iranian military official is activily {sic} aiding the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad in suppressing popular unrest throughout the country, a top member of the National Syrian Council said on Monday.

According to the Syrian official, Kassam Salimani, commander of the Quds Force, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard special forces unit, has arrived in Syria recently and has taken up a spot in the war room which manages army maneuvers against opposition forces.  The Quds Force includes 15,000 elite soldiers…http://www.haaretz.com/news/middle-east/report-top-iran-military-official-aiding-assad-s-crackdown-on-syria-opposition-1.411402

Russia, in particular, is not happy with how the situation with Libya went as it seems to feel that the West betrayed the intent of the UN resolution it reluctantly agreed to support against Libya.  Partially because of that, Russia is sticking with Syria, at least diplomatically.  China, according to reports I have read, seems to be using the tensions with Syria and Iran to attempt to negotiate better oil prices.  China, like Russia, also was not thrilled with how the West interpreted the UN resolution against Libya and is also hesitant to support the West in Syria and Iran (e.g. East vs. West: Russia, China, & India Opposing Sanctions on Iran & Syria), partially because of that.  Contrary to the misunderstandings of some, Russia is not about to invade Israel with Iran (for some details see WSJ Suggests that Israel Should Destroy Iran; Ezekiel 38? and Russia: Its Origins and Prophesied Future).

That being said, Syria is not so highly important to Russia or China, so that they would risk too much for Syria’s President Assad (that does not mean that they would be unwilling to provide any military support, but that there would be a real limit on that if they did).  And actually, Russia seems to be trying to come up with a way to try to handle the current situation diplomatically. Russia does not want to have to directly betray President Assad or support the West, but it also does not want a massive Islamic power to rise up–but diplomatically supporting Iran and Syria will not stop the massive Islamic power from rising.

The involvement in the Syrian situation with Turkey is also interesting.  Since the people of Edom are mentioned in Daniel 11:41 as escaping the future invasion told in Daniel 11:40-43, I have felt for some time that Turkey will temporarily support an Islamic Arabic King of the South, though not completely (I feel that ultimately Turkey will support the final European King of the North; cf. 11:25-26;41).  The fact that Turkey’s proposal specifically includes the Arab states suggests, to me at least, that Turkey is inclined to sometimes support the Arab nations.  The King of the South will apparently lead a confederation of Islamic nations, several of which, will not completely support it (cf. Daniel 11:41; 11:25-26).  If Iran is involved (which to a degree it is likely to be), it will not be the leader of the King of the South.  Whatever survives in Syria (cf. Isaiah 17:1) will apparently support the coming Arab King of the South leader of Daniel 11:40.  If those in Russia and China understood biblical prophecy better they would realize that their current stand perhaps should be modified in regards to Iran and Syria.  And to a degree, Russia is taking some steps to modify its position.

As far as Syria, notice what the Bible shows will happen to its capital Damascus:

1 An oracle concerning Damascus:
“See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins. 2 The cities of Aroer will be deserted and left to flocks, which will lie down, with no one to make them afraid. 3 The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim, and royal power from Damascus;the remnant of Aram will be like the glory of the Israelites,” declares the LORD Almighty. (Isaiah 17:1-3)

3 Thus says the Lord:
“For three transgressions of Damascus, and for four,
I will not turn away its punishment…5 I will also break the gate bar of Damascus,
And cut off the inhabitant from the Valley of Aven,
And the one who holds the scepter from Beth Eden.
The people of Syria shall go captive to Kir,”
Says the Lord. (Amos 1:3, 5)

As I have been writing for some time, Syria’s President Assad might decide his personal best option is to more closely support Iran and perhaps be involved in an invasion of Jerusalem and Israel. If so, this might be how Isaiah 17:1 is fulfilled.  The fact that he now has Iranian troops in his country, makes the idea of a joint Iranian-Syrian invasion of Israel much more feasible.  The destruction of Damascus could be seen as a sign that the end of the dominance of the Anglo-nations may not be too far behind (cf. Isaiah 17:3-4).

As far as Iran and Syria invading Israel, perhaps I should mention that technically, Syria is still at war with Israel as it never did sign a peace deal with Israel.  Iran has repeatedly called for Israel’s elimination and even put out a video in 2011 showing that it plans to take over Jerusalem (see Iran’s Ahmadinejad to Conquer Jerusalem?).  Thus, an actual war involving Iran-Syria against Israel is quite feasible. If so, Israel may hit back so hard that it might eliminate Damascus as Isaiah 17:1 says will happen.

Much is going on in the Middle East.

As Jesus said in Mark 13:37, we all should watch.

CG7: Holy Spirit Confusion

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

COGwriter

In the latest issue of its The Bible Advocate, CG7-Denver has the following:

Is the Holy Spirit, then, a third person of the Godhead, as the Father and Son are persons? There is no simple  answer nor complex formula by which the Christian Deity may be fully analyzed and finally summarized…

Since the Holy Spirit is not mentioned in most apostolic salutations, benedictions, or doxologies (as are the Father and Son); since the Spirit is not pictured as enthroned or reigning in heaven (as are Father and Son); since the Holy Spirit is not recorded as being worshiped or as being addressed in prayers (as are Father and Son); and since the Holy Spirit participates in no “I-Thou” communications with Father or Son as they do with each other; thus it is better to think of the Spirit as the personal presence of the Father and Son on earth and within believers, rather than as a third person of the Godhead.

CG7’s position seems, at best, to be lukewarm combined with some real heresy.

All honest scholars will admit that the earliest records of Greco-Roman and Church of God writers do not record that the Holy Spirit was the third person of a trinity.  It was apparently not until the latter part of the fourth century that the majority of Greco-Roman bishops even believed that either.

And it essentially took the Council of Constantinople in 381 to declare that the Holy Spirit was the third person of a trinity, and this had to be enforced with an Imperial Roman decree.  Notice the following from one of Emperor Theodosius’ edicts:

…let us believe in the one deity of the father, Son and Holy Spirit, in equal majesty and in a holy Trinity. We authorize the followers of this law to assume the title Catholic Christians; but as for the others, since in out judgment they are foolish madmen, we decree that the shall be branded with the ignominious name of heretics, and shall not presume to give their conventicles the name of churches. They will suffer in the first place the chastisement of divine condemnation an the second the punishment of out authority, in accordance with the will of heaven shall decide to inflict…(Theodosian Code XVI.1.2.  From Medieval Sourcebook: Banning of Other Religions. http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/theodcodeXVI.html viewed 7/28/08)

If early Christians believed that the Bible and the original Apostles taught that the Holy Spirit was the third person of a trinity, it would not have taken about three centuries for this belief to have to be officially declared.

The truth is that it was not until the third and fourth centuries that the trinitarian view of the Holy Spirit more fully developed–and it seems that it was a couple of universally recognized heretics in the second century who introduced it to the Greco-Roman professors of Christ, yet those heretics (Montanus and Valentinus) were fairly quickly denounced by Church of God leaders that the Greco-Romans consider to be saints.

The Eastern Orthodox know this as one of their bishops has written:

…the councils defined once and for all the Church’s teaching upon the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith — the Trinity and the Incarnation. All Christians agree in regarding these things as ‘mysteries’ which lie beyond human understanding and language…the first two, held in the fourth century…formulated the doctrine of the Trinity…The work of Nicea was taken up by the second Ecumenical Council, held in Constantinople in 381. This council expanded and adapted the Nicene Creed, developing in particular that teaching upon the Holy Spirit, whom it affirmed to be God even as the Father and the Son are God…It was the supreme achievement of St. Athanasius of Alexandria to draw out the full implications of the key word in the Nicene Creed: homoousios, one in essence or substance, consubstantial. Complementary to his work was that of the three Cappadocian Fathers, Saints…(died 394). While Athanasius emphasized the unity of God — Father and Son are one in essence (ousia) – the Cappadocians stressed God’s threeness: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three persons (hypostasis).  Ware T. The Orthodox Church. Penguin Books, London, 1997, pp. 20-23

And the Cathecism of the Catholic Church admits:

245 The apostolic faith concerning the Spirit was announced by the second ecumenical council at Constantinople (381) (Catechism of the Catholic Church. Imprimatur Potest +Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Doubleday, NY 1995, p. 72).

The belief that the Holy Spirit is the third person of a trinity is a tradition that developed after all the apostles died.  And it is not a biblical one.  Calling it the “apostolic faith” when none of the original apostles or their faithful followers actually taught it is improper as it was a late innovation that did not get formal Greco-Roman acceptance until 381.

CG7 should have been more direct on that point–this is another area that it seems to be risking losing more of the truth that it once had (cf. Revelation 3:1-3).

WSJ Suggests that Israel Should Destroy Iran; Ezekiel 38?

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Jerusalem

COGwriter

In the Wall Street Journal, Bret Stephens had the following:

Wall Street Journal – ‎February 7, 2012, p. A11…
.
Diplomacy has run its course, sanctions are too late, and Israel can’t cry wolf again.
.
Can Israel attack Iran?
.
Should Israel do it? If the U.S. has no serious intention to go beyond sanctions, Israel’s only alternative to action is to accept a nuclear Iran and then stand by as the rest of its neighbors acquire nuclear weapons of their own. That scenario is the probable end of Israel.
.
Then again, if Israel is going to gamble so much on a strike, it should play for large stakes. The Islamic Republic means to destroy Israel. If Israel means to survive, it should commit itself similarly. Destroying Iran’s nuclear sites will be a short-lived victory if it isn’t matched to the broader goal of ending the regime

Bret Stephens seems to be calling for Israel to eliminate Iran or at least enough of its top leadership that Iran will not in the future be able to threaten Israel again.  His position is somewhat consistent with those of certain other analysts as well as some positions speculated here.

Actually, yesterday  I posted (Israeli Cabinet Mulls Military Options for Iran):

My reading and re-reading of Bible prophecy simply does not show that Iran will be a major player in Daniel 11:21-44 nor the deal of Psalm 83:4-8.  Since Iran does not seem to be identified in those particular passages, and Iran has a loud voice now, those facts have somewhat led me to conclude that Iran will somehow be “neutralized.”

“Neutralizing” Iran would allow most of the other Islamic states (like Saudi Arabia and Egypt) to continue to exist (Syria might not do well per Isaiah 17:1) and allow for the rising of the prophesied leader (revolution in Iran, is also another possibility, for its “neutralization”).

Perhaps I should add that I disagree with certain writers who claim that Ezekiel 38 is or may be on the verge of being fulfilled.  Notice an article by Donald L. Blake, Sr.:

Washington Times – ‎Feb 5, 2012

Modern Iran is the biblical Persia…

The Hebrew Prophet Ezekiel describes a dictator called Gog (often associated with Russia) who will form a military coalition with Iran, Sudan, Libya, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian countries in “the last days” (Ezekiel 38:16). Could this be a reference to modern day events in the Middle East?

No, it is not.

Let’s look at many of the passages from Ezekiel 38 to put this all in context:

1 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him, 3 and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. 4 I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. 5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all its troops; the house of Togarmah from the far north and all its troops — many people are with you.

7 “Prepare yourself and be ready, you and all your companies that are gathered about you; and be a guard for them. 8 After many days you will be visited. In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword and gathered from many people on the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them dwell safely. 9 You will ascend, coming like a storm, covering the land like a cloud, you and all your troops and many peoples with you.”

10 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On that day it shall come to pass that thoughts will arise in your mind, and you will make an evil plan: 11 You will say, ‘I will go up against a land of unwalled villages; I will go to a peaceful people, who dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates’ —  12 to take plunder and to take booty, to stretch out your hand against the waste places that are again inhabited, and against a people gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, who dwell in the midst of the land. 13 Sheba, Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish, and all their young lions will say to you, ‘Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?'”‘

14 “Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On that day when My people Israel dwell safely, will you not know it?  15 Then you will come from your place out of the far north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great company and a mighty army. 16 You will come up against My people Israel like a cloud, to cover the land. It will be in the latter days that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me, when I am hallowed in you, O Gog, before their eyes.” (Ezekiel 38:1-17)

And while Ezekiel 38 does mention Persia (which would equate to modern Iran), Israel is not now a “land of unwalled villages” with “a peaceful people who dwell safely” (Ezekiel 38:10-11) .  Furthermore, there simply is not a plan to take a lot of gold and silver out of Israel right now by the power of the far north, nor does the current nation of Israel have enough of it to likely justify an attack for that purpose.  Those who believe otherwise are in error (more on Ezekiel 38 is included in the article Russia: Its Origins and Prophesied Future).

A regional war, that somewhat gets out of control and may involve Syria (who is becoming a closer Iranian ally at this time) and others (including many based in Lebanon), beyond Iran and Israel is something I have warned could happen for some time now and really could be a factor that ultimately leads to the fulfillment of Daniel 9:27.

If Iran believes it is going to be attacked, this may encourage Iran to first attack Israel or at least more directly provoke Israel to attack.  If Iran believes that attacks from Israel will be super serious, it will not only strike back hard against Israel, it may also (perhaps indirectly) strike against US targets.  If a “dirty bomb” (a bomb with radioactive materials), nuclear bomb, and/or EMP bomb were to be detonated in the United States because of Iran, this could cause the USA major problems.   And while it is possible that Iran would not survive well what ever retaliation that the USA would likely provide, the USA could be partially crippled by some of its possible actions.

If there is a regional war and Syria is highly involved, then there is a chance its capital will be destroyed as ultimately Damascus will be (Isaiah 17:1)–and that is one reason that I believe supports the idea that Israel may hit Iran hard.

Events are heating up in the Middle East. “And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!” (Mark 13:37).  Ezekiel 38 is not about to be fulfilled, but other prophecies are getting closer to being fulfilled.

True and False Christian Leaders in Northern Africa

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

COGwriter

February is Black History Month in the USA and Canada (the UK uses October instead), and I thought that this would be a good time to explain that there were true and false Christian leaders in North Africa in the third century (irrespective of race).

In the third century, once there were some few real Christians in northern Africa, Origen (who apparently was not black) noted that there were two groups that he considered to be “Ebionites”, one who believed in the virgin birth (and that would be those who this paper suggests were also known as the Nazarenes) and those who did not:

Let it be admitted, moreover, that there are some who accept Jesus, and who boast on that account of being Christians, and yet would regulate their lives, like the Jewish multitude, in accordance with the Jewish law,—and these are the twofold sect of Ebionites, who either acknowledge with us that Jesus was born of a virgin, or deny this, and maintain that He was begotten like other human beings…(Origen. Contra Celsus, Book V, Chapter 61).

The true Christians in Africa were not those associated with Origen (please see what happened in Alexandria), nor those that denied the virgin birth. The true Christians were those professed Jesus and had practices similar to those of the Jews.

Origen of Alexandria, however, was not a true Christian. Origen even appeared to recognize several non-canonically writings as scripture and had been influenced by some Gnostic teachings. Sadly, Origen referred to The Epistle of Barnabas like he does actual parts of the Bible (Origen. Contra Celsus, Book I, Chapter 63), seems to also do so with the falsely titled Gospel of Peter (Origen. Commentary on Matthew, Book X, Verse 17. ANF), and even calls what I consider to be the “demonically-influenced” Shepherd of Hermas as “divinely inspired” (Cited in Metzger, Bruce M. The Canon of the New Testament: Its Origin, Development, and Significance).

Antioch (which is now in present day Syria) probably resisted much of this Gnostic influence until some time into the early third century. And while Origen and some others recognized the falsely titled “Gospel of Peter” it was specifically condemned by Serapion, Bishop of Antioch. Serapion went to see a group that he thought was Christian in the seaside port of Rhossus, which is located southwest of Alexandria. When he got there he was disappointed to learn that they were reading this “Gospel of Peter” (Eusebius. The History of the Church, Book VI, Chapter XII, verse 1, p. 125 ) and thus he realized that they were not all part of the “true faith”:

For we, brethren, receive both Peter and the other apostles as Christ; but we reject intelligently the writings falsely inscribed with them, knowing that such were not handed down to. When I visited you I supposed that all of you held the true faith…(Eusebius. The History of the Church, Book VI, Chapter XII, verses 3-4, p. 125-126).

Thus while there were some true Christians in northern Africa in the early part of the third century, Serapion ran into false ones. And like the rest of the world, sadly the majority of people in Africa (and elsewhere) who profess the religion of Christ, are not practicing the religion of the Christ of the Bible as the true church was only expected to be a “little flock” (for more information, please see the article The History of Early Christianity).

It probably should also be mentioned that around the time of Serapion, at least one African leader stood up to allegorists like Origen. The Catholic Encyclopedia reported:

An Egyptian bishop, Nepos, taught the Chiliastic error that there would be a reign of Christ upon earth for a thousand years, a period of corporal delights; he founded this doctrine upon the Apocalypse in a book entitled “Refutation of the Allegorizers” (Chapman, John. “Dionysius of Alexandria.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 5. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1909. 14 Aug. 2008 <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05011a.htm>.).

A nineteenth century anti-millennial scholar named Giovanni Battista Pagani went as far as to write the following about Nepos and those who supported the millennium:

…all those who teach a millennium framed according to Jewish ideas, saying that during the millennium, Mosaic law will be restored…These are called Judaical Millenarians, not as being Jews, but as having invented and upheld a millennium according to Jewish taste. The principal authors of this error were Nepos, an African Bishop, against whom St. Dionysius wrote his two books on Promises; and Apollinaris, whom St. Epiphanius confound in his work against heresies (Pagani, Giovanni Battista. Published by Charles Dolman, 1855. Original from Oxford University. Digitized Aug 15, 2006, pp. 252-253).

It should be of interest to note that neither Nepos nor Apollinaris were Jews (Nepos may have been black), but were condemned for having a religion that had “Jewish” beliefs. And since Apollinaris is a Catholic saint (see article Apollinaris of Hierapolis), it should be clear that the respected and non-Jewish Christian leaders in the early third century clearly did hold to ideas that were condemned by the allegorists.

The following from Dionysius clearly shows that Nepos was still respected after he died (Nepos died prior to Dionysius’ mid-third century writing of the following) and really did not refute him from a biblical perspective:

But as they produce a certain composition by Nepos, on which they insist very strongly, as if it demonstrated incontestably that there will be a (temporal) reign of Christ upon the earth, I have to say, that in many other respects I accept the opinion of Nepos, and love him at once for his faith, and his laboriousness, and his patient study in the Scriptures, as also for his great efforts in psalmody, by which even now many of the brethren are delighted. I hold the man, too, in deep respect still more, inasmuch as he has gone to his rest before us. Nevertheless the truth is to be prized and reverenced above all things else. And while it is indeed proper to praise and approve ungrudgingly anything that is said aright, it is no less proper to examine and correct anything which may appear to have been written unsoundly. If he had been present then himself, and had been stating his opinions orally, it would have been sufficient to discuss the question together without the use of writing, and to endeavour to convince the opponents, and carry them along by interrogation and reply. But the work is published, and is, as it seems to some, of a very persuasive character; and there are unquestionably some teachers, who hold that the law and the prophets are of no importance, and who decline to follow the Gospels, and who depreciate the epistles of the apostles, and who have also made large promises regarding the doctrine of this composition, as though it were some great and hidden mystery, and who, at the same time, do not allow that our simpler brethren have any sublime and elevated conceptions either of our Lord’s appearing in His glory and His true divinity, or of our own resurrection from the dead, and of our being gathered together to Him, and assimilated to Him, but, on the contrary, endeavour to lead them to hope for things which are trivial and corruptible, and only such as what we find at present in the kingdom of God. And since this is the case, it becomes necessary for us to discuss this subject with our brother Nepos just as if he were present (Dionysius of Alexandria. From the Two Books on the Promises. Copyright © 2008 by Kevin Knight. Viewed 8/14/08).

In other words, Nepos knew his Bible, but did not hold to the same position that allegorists like Dionysius of Alexandria held. But those who held to Judaeo-Christian beliefs, while slightly chastised, simply were almost never condemned by the early allegorists. Mainly, because the early allegorists knew that the original Christians held to beliefs and practices that the allegorists considered to be Jewish–and at this stage, the allegorists simply did not have the ability to condemn the literalists because most who professed Christ at the time knew that the literalists had ties to the original apostolic church. (More information on faithful Christians in northern African locations can be found in the article Arabic Nazarenes May Have Kept Original Christian Practices.)

There were faithful early Christians in Northern Africa, of various races, in the third century who believed in the millennium and did not compromise with the allegorists. There are also Christians like that today.

Sabbath-keeping in Ethiopia

Perhaps it should also be noted that there long have been Sabbath-keepers who claim Christ in the African nation of Ethiopia.  Ethiopia is in east-north-east Africa.  In fourth century Ethiopia, Frumentius reported:

“And we assemble on Saturday,” he continues ; “not that we are infected with Judaism, but to worship Jesus, the Lord of the Sabbath” (Davis, Tamar. A General History of the Sabbatarian Churches. 1851; Reprinted 1995 by Commonwealth Publishing, Salt Lake City, pp. 41-42).

Notice some of the statements by Ethiopian Emperor Galawdewos (A.D. 1540-1559):

We do celebrate the Sabbath, because God, after He had finished the Creation of the World, rested thereon…and that especially, since Christ came not to dissolve the law but to fulfill it. It is therefore not in the imitation of the Jews, but in obedience to Christ, and His holy apostles, that we observe that day (Quoted in Bradford C.E. Sabbath Roots, The African Connection. L. Brown and Sons, Barre (VT), 1999, p. 26).

Notice also the following:

W. W. Oliphant, an African church leader in the early years of the twentieth century says that the “Sabbath in Ethiopia [has] been kept from the days of Nimrod, about 2140 B.C. (read Gen. 10:8, 10), that is 700 years before the birth of Moses. . . . Africans or Ethiopians had been Sabbath observers from the days of Nimrod, the son of Cush” (Quoted in Bradford C.E. Sabbath Roots, The African Connection. L. Brown and Sons, Barre (VT), 1999, p. 26).

Although the above connection to the time of Nimrod is difficult to prove or disprove, the reality is that Ethiopia has had a long history of keeping the seventh-day Sabbath.

While most people around the world who keep the seventh-day Sabbath are not part of the Church of God (more Jews and Seventh-day Adventists keep it), it is interesting that it was kept in an African Gentile nation like Ethiopia centuries before the Seventh-day Adventist church formed, and perhaps prior to the birth of Christ.

Perhaps early faithful Christians introduced the Sabbath to the Ethiopians, or it is also possible that the Queen of Sheba brought Sabbath-keeping to Ethiopia after meeting with Solomon or perhaps it was known from the time of the flood.

Either way, some Gentiles in Africa have been keeping the Sabbath for centuries.  And those of us faithful in the Church of God still do so today.  The Living Church of God has many Sabbath-keeping congregations throughout Africa who also hold to Nepos’ teachings about the millennium.

EU’s Fragile Tower of Babel

European Union Tower of Babel Poster

COGwriter

Page R8 of today’s Wall Street Journal had the following:

The 17-nation euro zone at times has resembled a crumbling Tower of Babel...

It is interesting when financial writers also notice that the EU has similarities to the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11)–from whence the term Babylon seems to derive.

Speaking of the EU, Romania has been showing its own signs of crumbling as I reported before (Riots in Romania).  Now notice something from the news today:

Romania’s government collapses after protests

‎CBS News – 6 February 2012 (AP) BUCHAREST, RomaniaRomania’s government collapsed Monday following weeks of protests against austerity measures, the latest debt-stricken government in Europe to fall in the face of raising public anger over biting cuts.

The above was not really unexpected.

Furthermore, the Bible indicates that the final Babylonian-Beast power will be fragile:

41 Whereas you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter’s clay and partly of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; yet the strength of the iron shall be in it, just as you saw the iron mixed with ceramic clay. (Daniel 2:41-43)

Europe’s currency, economy, military, and political cohesiveness all currently seem to have issues of fragility.

Yet, this fragility ultimately will lead to the resurgence of a desire for a strong leader in Europe.  Despite problems in Romania and other parts of Europe (Greece comes to mind),  it is not yet over for Europe.

The Bible, in Revelation 17, is clear that the Europeans will give their power to a coming leader:

12 “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast. (Revelation 17:12-13)

According to Bible prophecy, a European power, despite its fragility, is destined to temporarily be the most dominant force in the world, ultimately conquer the Anglo-descended nations (it is the USA and its Anglo-allies like the UK that have the strongest fortresses of Daniel 11:39), and later come to its end (Daniel 11:45).  This power will be affiliated with”Babylon” (Revelation 18).

But before it is destroyed (Daniel 11:21-44), the final Beast power must come together and get to the place where it has major military and economic influence (Revelation 13). Almost daily, there are news items that suggest that it is on its way to fulfill various biblical prophecies.

Israeli Cabinet Mulls Military Options for Iran

Israeli Cabinet Mulls Response to Iran Threat

Robert Berger — Jerusalem

Growing tensions between Israel and Iran topped the agenda at the weekly Cabinet meeting in Jerusalem.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opened the Cabinet meeting by referring to a statement last week by Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who described Israel as “a cancerous tumor that must be cut off.”

Netanyahu said the only way to ensure Israel’s survival in a region where Iran’s ruler talks “about destroying Israel,” is to continue to develop the nation’s military might…

Israel has said time and again that if international sanctions against Iran fail, it is prepared to take military action on its own…Jerusalem Post defense analyst Yaakov Katz says time for a diplomatic solution is running out.

“The window is definitely closing,” he said.

Katz says Israel has the firepower to back up the threat.

“Israel has created over the years a viable military option, that is in place potentially, if it decides to take unilateral military action to stop Iran’s nuclear program,”

Many analysts question how effective an Israeli attack would be, considering that Iran is 1,200 kilometers from Israel and its nuclear facilities are spread out and fortified deep underground. But last week, Israel’s Deputy Premier Moshe Ya’alon, a former army chief, said that all of Iran’s nuclear sites are “vulnerable” to military strikes.  http://www.voanews.com/tibetan-english/news/Israeli-Cabinet-Mulls-Response-to-Iran-Threat-138775264.html

As regular readers of the COGwriter news page are aware, I have been warning for some time that a regional war involving Iran, Israel, and Syria seems likely.

Based upon various Israeli reports (e.g. Iran Denies Israeli Involvement in Bomb Blast, But 2012 May Be a Different Matter) and recent comments from the US Defense Secretary (for details, see Panetta Believes Israel Will Attack Iran in April, May, or June 2012), a 2012 attack is certainly possible.

Also notice the following from the news yesterday:

‘Eshel will prepare perfect attack plan’
Incoming IAF chiefwill be tasked with planning possible strike in Iran, possible confrontation with in Syria, but a former colleague says ‘He’ll put all cards on the table – good or bad’…
Referring to the possibility that Eshel would be the one overseeing an IAF military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, the officer said: “He’ll know how to prepare the forces in the most meticulous and perfect manner, and lay out all the possible scenarios and chances of success.”

The situation in the Middle East is tense. Since Iran, however, is NOT really south of Jerusalem, we in the Living Church of God do not believe that it will be the final King of the South of Bible prophecy (cf. Daniel 11:4-43). Because of that, I have tended to believe that Iran may somehow get “neutralized” before this final king rises up.  A serious attack by Israel may neutralize Iran and much of its influence.  It also may take a regional war for the seven-year confirmation of the deal in Daniel 9:27 to come about.

We will watch and see (Mark 13:37).

Deadly Earthquake in Philippines

COGwriter

CBS reported the following:

MANILA, Philippines – A strong earthquake in the central Philippines killed at least 43 people Monday as it destroyed buildings and triggered landslides that buried dozens of houses, trapping residents. Dozens more people were reported missing.

The 6.8-magnitude quake, in a narrow strait just off Negros Island, caused a landslide in Guihulngan, a city of about 180,000 people in Negros Oriental province. As many as 30 houses were buried and at least 29 people were missing, Mayor Ernesto Reyes said.  http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-202_162-57371737/philippines-earthquake-kills-scores/?tag=stack

The Philippines has faced a lot of disasters and troubles.   Including a deadly flood in December 2011 (Death Toll Rises Near 1000 in the Philippines Flood).

Jesus, of course, warned about a time earthquakes and troubles:

8 … And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be…troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows. (Mark 13:8)

We may be at this prophetic point as all the earthquakes and other problems that have happened in the past couple of years or so could be considered as “troubles.”

Perhaps the earthquake and weather problems can serve as another wake-up call to people everywhere that the world can change very quickly and that the time to repent is now:

30 Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent, 31 because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead. (Acts 17:30-31)

There are troubles and repentance is needed. Things are going to get much worse than this.  My prayers go out to those in the Philippines.

GCI (WCG) Reports About Large Hadron Collider

Supercollider

COGwriter

The current edition of Grace Communion International’s Christian Odyssey has the following about the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC):

An interview with Dr. Keith Baker, professor at Yale University and an experimental particle and nuclear physicist. He is a member of the experimental team working at the CERN Collider in Geneva, Switzerland.

Christian Odyssey: Would it be true to say that you are on the leading edge when it comes to experiments in this field?

Keith Baker: Yes. The most likely venue for new discoveries in all of science is at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. And that’s where I am. I’ve been working at the LHC for just over 15 years.

CO: What does the Hadron Collider do?

KB: The Large Hadron Collider is a proton-proton collider, that is, it collides hadrons. Briefly, hadrons are particles that have internal structure whereas the other class of particles—leptons—are structureless. For example, protons, neutrons, mesons are all examples of hadrons; they are made of quarks and gluons. Quarks and gluons are subject to the strong force and come together to form these hadrons. On the other hand, electrons, positrons, taus, and muons are examples of leptons.

Grace Communion International (GCI) is the name of the group that ended up in control of the old Worldwide Church of God (WCG).

Notice that Dr. Baker believes that Europe’s LHC is the “most likely venue for new discoveries in all of science.”

And of course, despite his involvement, it is a European, not American, project.

Large physics projects tend to produce military weaponry. Now if the Large Hadron Collider does have military potential, which I have long indicated that it does, all should understand that it is likely that the Europeans and not the Americans will benefit from it:

Collider Sets Record, and Europe Takes U.S.’s Lead…

Those spinoffs now will invigorate the careers and labs of Europe, not the United States, pointed out Steven Weinberg, a physicist at the University of Texas in Austin, who won the Nobel Prize for work that will be tested in the new collider. Americans will work at CERN, but not as leaders, he said in an e-mail interview.“There is also a depressing symbolism,” he added, “in the fact that the hottest new results in fundamental physics will for decades not be coming from our country.” http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/10/science/10collide.html

So, whatever technologies are spun-off from this highly important science project are expected to primarily benefit the Europeans and not the Americans.

My book 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect points out that the Large Hadron Collider may be used to give the future European military power that the entire world will marvel at:

…the Large Hadron Collider…is apt to provide the Europeans with unique military capabilities in several years…The Bible is clear that the final “Beast power” (which will be primarily European) will have such unique military capabilities that the entire world will marvel (Revelation 13:3-4). (2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect. Nazarene Books, 2009, p. 85)

My book also discusses the destruction of the USA and certain others by the Europeans sometime after 2012.

The Large Hadron Collider is discussed as one of the items that may provide the Europeans with the ability to overcome the USA’s military might. And while many think that this would be impossible, as the Europeans continue to uncover “impossible” and previously unknown aspects of physics, it is getting more and more technology that could be developed in that direction.

The understanding of the Living Church of God that the Europeans will be able to attack and takeover the United States and its Anglo-descended allies (cf. Isaiah 10:5-11; Daniel 11:39) is correct and will come to pass. And it still appears, to me at least, possible that the past and likely future successes of the CERN LHC may assist in the fulfillment of those prophecies.

Some articles of possibly related interest may include:

Europa, the Beast, and Revelation Where did Europe get its name? What might Europe have to do with the Book of Revelation? What about “the Beast”? What is ahead for Europe?
Who is the King of the North? Is there one? Do biblical and Roman Catholic prophecies point to the same leader? Should he be followed? Who will be the King of the North discussed in Daniel 11? Is a nuclear attack prophesied to happen to the English-speaking peoples of the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand? When do the 1335 days, 1290 days, and 1260 days (the time, times, and half a time) of Daniel 12 begin? When does the Bible show that economic collapse will affect the United States?
End of Mayan Calendar 2012–Might 2012 Mean Something? Are there Mayan calendar predictions for change in 2012? Changes were centuries ago predicted by the Hopi Native Americans. Do Mayan/Hindu/Hopi/Buddhist/New Age/Nostradamus prophecies have any value here? Why might Satan have inspired this date? Does the Dresden codex show destruction of the earth by flood?
Anglo – America in Prophecy & the Lost Tribes of Israel Are the Americans, Canadians, British, Scottish, Welsh, Australians, Anglo-Southern Africans, and New Zealanders descendants of Joseph? Where are the lost ten-tribes of Israel? Who are the lost tribes of Israel? Will God punish the U.S.A., Canada, United Kingdom, and other Anglo nations? Why might God allow them to be punished first?
Large Hadron Collider may result in military applications
The Europeans have the largest physics project on the planet. Some scoff, but might it result in military applications? May the Large Hadron Collider help fulfill Revelation 13:4?
