Obama Administration via Russia to Iran: Accede or Be Attacked

War drums continue to be sounded from the USA and Israel:

‘US warns Iran: Accede or be attacked’
Jerusalem Post – March 14, 2012

The United States asked Russia to send Iran a message that the upcoming round of nuclear talks is its last chance to avoid a military confrontation this year, Russian newspaper Kommersant reported Wednesday according to a diplomatic source.

The unusually stark warning by the US was passed on by Secretary of State Hilary Clinton to her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, after the two met in New York on Monday, the diplomatic source told the Russian newspaper.

The source said pressure from Jerusalem on Washington was forcing the latter to support a military option within the year in order to stop Tehran from developing a nuclear bomb.

“The invasion will happen before the year’s end,” the source told Kommersant. “The Israelis are, in effect, blackmailing Obama: either he supports the war, or he risks losing the support [of the Jewish lobby]” the year of US presidential elections.  http://www.jpost.com/IranianThreat/News/Article.aspx?id=261804

Christian Science Monitor – 14 March 2012

“The window for solving this issue diplomatically is shrinking,” Mr. Obama said, adding that the world and the US will not accept a nuclear-armed Iran. He concluded with a message to the Iranian government: “Meet your international obligations or face the consequences.”

The Reuters/Ipsos poll does suggest that Republicans are much more likely to favor striking Iran – perhaps reflecting the hawkish rhetoric on Iran from Republican presidential candidates during last week’s visit to Washington by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. While 70 percent of Republicans would support bombing an Iran that was shown to be building a nuclear weapon, 46 percent of Democrats and 51 percent of independents would support such action.

I have been writing that I felt that Israel was providing pressure to the USA related to the upcoming US presidential election.  And according to the Jerusalem Post source, I was correct about that.  Presuming that Russia did deliver the Obama Administration’s message, it likely understands that the USA is serious and probably would not want to directly engage the USA militarily itself.

This type of attack, especially if it has much USA military involvement, would have devastating effects on Iran, yet it could also cause the USA debt, terrorist, and other problems. An attack by Israel could eliminate Iran as a major force in the Islamic world and very well could happen by November of 2012.

Yet, while US President Obama hopes not to have a major war, I suspect that a regional war in the Middle East could get out of control, especially presuming Syria is involved (the USA keeps dropping hints about supporting the opposition in Syria that Syria would almost certainly get involved). Syria itself is having major problems now internationally as many are upset with its handling of internal protests and revolutionaries (one news headline today was Obama: Syria Military Intervention Premature which certainly hints that military intervention with Syria may happen).  Syrian involvement with Iran (or other unrest, including internal unrest) may result in so much damage to Damascus (Isaiah 17:1) and/or Iran that it could spur massive outrage in the Islamic world. Enough so that the primarily Sunni Arabs will likely decide that they need closer unity and will support some type of caliph/Mahdi and that the biblical King of the South will rise up.

According to the Bible, the King of the South (Daniel 11:40) will rise up and we will see if this happens sometime after a conflict with Iran–somehow Iran’s influence is going to be minimized or otherwise neutralized.

This does not mean that I believe that Israel (or the USA and its allies for that matter) will end up without potentially severe losses, only that Iran and Syria may start to feel so desperate that they will conclude that military conflict with Israel is their best option–if so, this would be a mistake on those nations’ part. But with all the pressure that Iran and Syria are having, they (if the current Syrian regime lasts long enough, and it may not) may feel that they have no choice but to get more aggressive themselves (perhaps after pretending otherwise).

We will see.

Prussian Prince calls for reinstatement of German Monarchy

Crown of the Beast of Revelation?
Crown of the “Austro-Hungarian Empire” & the “Holy Roman Empire”

COGwriter

While Germany is considered to be a democracy, some seem to want to see the return of the monarchy, including at least one prince:

Prince: Germany should reinstate monarchy
The Local – March 14, 2012
Germany should reinstate its monarchy to speak to people’s emotions, make them proud of their country and even encourage them to have babies, according to Prince Philip Kiril of Prussia, great-great grandson of the last KaiserBut even if the German royal family were to be reinstated, Prince Philip would not sit on the throne – that honour would go to Prince Georg Friedrich von Preußen, who is the direct heir and has said he would not want to see a royal restoration.  http://www.thelocal.de/national/20120314-41325.html
Should Germany bring back the royal family?
Germany got rid of its last Kaiser nearly a century ago, but the country remains fascinated by royals. One of the Kaiser’s descendants says royalty would help the country – but should Germany reinstate the monarchy?
The Local – March 14, 2012
The Kaiser’s descendants still live aristocratic lives even though the royal family was abolished in 1918 after defeat in World War I. And last summer, the wedding of Prince Georg Friedrich of Prussia attracted not only a good showing of European royal guests but also the attention of the German public…
.

A possibly increasing acceptance and even popularity of Germany’s home grown monarchy is no doubt linked with the young, educated and affable Prince Georg. His rare public appearances, fresh-faced good looks and reticence would certainly offer a contrast to the grey-haired politicians representing the country.

Germany’s presidential post has hardly been covered in glory recently, having been held by two politicians, one of whom resigned arguably too early, the other too late. The debacle over Christian Wulff’s resignation prompted one of the Kaiser’s great-great grandsons to argue this week that a monarchy would be good for the country.

But would a restored monarchy – presumably along British or Swedish-type constitutional lines – be a good thing for Germany?  http://www.thelocal.de/society/20120314-41329.html

We in the Living Church of God have long taught that Germany (and others in Europe) would look for some type of “strong leader” to lead it (see, for example, New Europe Rising!).

The Bible shows that Europe will reorganize into ten kingdoms and get an autocratic leader (Revelation 17:12-13). This leader will apparently attempt to re-establish a 21st century of the old “Holy Roman Empire.”  The crown of which is composed of iron and clay (cf. Daniel 2:41-43) covered with gold and jewels.  The Beast is also supposed to be support/ridden by a religious system which has gold and jewels (Revelation 17:1-4)–though the Beast-supporting kingdoms will eventually betray that church/religious system (Revelation 17:16-17).

It is possible that more nations in Europe will adopt a monarchy, though this literally may not be an absolute biblical requirement.  But the sentiment, at least among some in Germany, is that a stronger leader than a president is desired.  In the future, this desire will apparently increase to the point that the Beast of Revelation 13:1-10 & 17:12-13 will rise up.

2012 is shaping up as a year with many prophetically-significant developments.  More prophetic developments will happen this year.

EU’s Van Rompuy Pleased with Progress and Serbia

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

Herman Van Rompuy

COGwriter

The EU President Herman van Rompuy is pleased that an additional country, Serbia, has attained candidacy status for EU membership:

Rompuy for better Belgrade-Pristina relations

EMportal – 14 March 2012

President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy stated Tuesday that Serbia’s EU candidate status is a notable achievement, adding that he expects further normalization of the Belgrade-Pristina relations.

Despite criticisms, he also seems (publicly at least) to be pleased with how the EU is handling its debt crisis:

Debt crisis turning point reached, says Van Rompuy‎ Irish Times 14 March 2012

THE EUROPEAN Union has reached a “turning point” in dealing with the debt crisis, president of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy told MEPs in Strasbourg yesterday.

Speaking on the outcome of the latest European summit – which concluded earlier this month – Mr Van Rompuy said it was the first such meeting for some time that had been “positive and not overshadowed by a major crisis”.

The summit saw 25 of the 27 EU countries sign the new fiscal pact…

About two weeks ago, Van Rompuy {was} confirmed for 2nd term as EU Council president.

The European Union itself is the biggest economic power in the world (sometimes, depending upon the calculation, the USA is, but the trend is going more towards Europe, though it still is likely to have economic and other problems).

Here a some comments in my 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect book related to its prophesied growth:

Millennia ago, Daniel wrote a prophecy that discussed a little horn that would mainly expand to the south and east:

8And out of one of them came a little horn which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Glorious Land. 10 And it grew up to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and some of the stars to the ground, and trampled them. 11 He even exalted himself as high as the Prince of the host; and by him the daily sacrifices were taken away, and the place of His sanctuary was cast down. 12 Because of transgression, an army was given over to the horn to oppose the daily sacrifices; and he cast truth down to the ground. He did all this and prospered (Daniel 8:9-12).

And while the above has had a past fulfillment, this prophecy seems to be dual (compare with Daniel 11:27-–39)—and seems to be for our time.

What is now the EU began as a small organization involving three small countries located in the northern and western regions of Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, called the Benelux nations)—they then helped form the European Economic Community. This European Economic Community expanded mainly south and east of the Benelux nations, into what had become the expanded European Union.  Now, about 500 million people are under a new (though not completely united) government headquartered in Brussels, Belgium.

Serbia itself is south and east of the Benelux nations.

While some few Protestants are finally starting to wake up to the reality of an emerging European superpower being the revival of the old Roman Empire to represent the Beast of Revelation, the true Church of God has known this since Polycarp. The “Holy Roman Empire” in the Middle Ages and its many versions were only a foretaste of what will develop.

Even when Europe was still recovering from being devastated in World War II, in the December 1948 issue of The Plain Truth Herbert W. Armstrong predicted a coming “United States of Europe” (Armstrong HW. Now It Can Be Told…The Plain Truth, December 1948, p. 5). Herbert W. Armstrong’s old church also taught:

These ten nations, or groups of nations, comprising the modern revived Beast, are to fight Christ at His coming. This shows the time for the fulfillment of this prophecy…Remember that there must be TEN NATIONS or groups of nations to comprise the final resurrection of the modern “Holy Roman Empire”! (AMBASSADOR COLLEGE, BIBLE CORRESPONDENCE COURSE. LESSON 32 (1963, 1965, 1967, 1969)

“And in the days of these kings…”–it is here speaking of the ten toes, part of iron and part of brittle clay. This, by connecting the prophecy with Daniel 7, and Revelation 13 and 17, is referring to the new UNITED STATES OF EUROPE that is now forming, out of the European Common Market, before your very eyes! Revelation 17:12 makes plain the detail that it shall be a union of TEN KINGS OR KINGDOMS that (Rev. 17:8) shall resurrect the old ROMAN EMPIRE. So, mark carefully the time element! “In the days of these kings”–in the days of these then nations or groups of nations that shall, IN OUR TIME, resurrect briefly the Roman Empire… (The members of the European Common Market are probably not the same ten that will resurrect the Holy Roman Empire.) (Armstrong HW. Mystery of the Ages. Dodd, Mead & Company, New York, 1985, pp. 301,302-303)

Hence an emerging, somewhat united, European power is something we have long taught about, and while it will reorganize into ten kingdoms first, the exact number of nations does not need to be ten. But it will be somewhat of a type of the old “Holy Roman Empire,” and a reorganization still needs to take place there according the prophecies in Revelation 17:12-13.

Furthermore, I have been watching Herman Van Rompuy for some time as being supportive of such an empire. Herman Van Rompuy is Roman (as opposed to Eastern Orthodox) Catholic. And back in 2009 I suggested that he may fulfill a role in end time prophecy and perhaps raise taxes for the glory of the European empire (Daniel 11:20; see also Herman Van Rompuy May Fulfill Daniel 11:20, But Did PCG’s Gerald Flurry Predict It?).

But even if Herman Van Rompuy is not specifically prophesied, the trend in Europe is to go for a stronger leader as well as for one that will work with the Vatican.

Ultimately, a major dictator (and I do not anticipate at this time that it will be Herman van Rompuy) will rise up (Revelation 17:12-13), the final King of the North, European Beast power of Bible prophecy.

And while the Catholic Van Rompuy is pleased that the EU is still expanding, the Bible warns that the union will be fragile, it will not stick together well, and ultimately, God will have it destroyed (Daniel 2:41-44).

Passover and Love

Claimed nail from the crucifixion

COGwriter

Here are some excerpts from today’s commentary from the Living Church of God:

By William Williams (guest columnist) | Tuesday, March 13, 2012…

God is love, but what is true love? The Apostle Paul said that love is foundational: “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:3). Jesus Christ Himself, quoting the Old Testament book of Leviticus, said: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these” (Mark 12:30-31).

In each of these scriptures, the original Greek word used for love is agape, a five-letter word meaning unconditional, outgoing concern for others, with no expectation in return. Agape is a different concept from romantic, erotic, or even filial love – all of which may have similar shades of meaning, but from the purely physical perspective also include some conditionality as well. We love what makes us feel good, quite naturally. But Jesus Christ even commanded us to show agape love to our enemies (Matthew 5:44), who certainly do not love us or desire to give us anything!

There is a love which surpasses all others: a kind which only God can bestow naturally, but which we can learn by His example, and the example of Jesus Christ. Christ’s sacrifice pictures an act of outgoing love for beings that could in no way repay Him, and for whom He was not required to do anything, being perfect and needing nothing from us (John 3:16; Philippians 2:5-8). Through understanding this agape love, we can learn to avoid the pitfalls of human emotion, self-deception and mistakes, as the Bible clearly warns us about (Jeremiah 17:9). Once we do, all other love becomes possible in ways we cannot imagine on our own.

Passover, the day true Christians commemorate Christ’s act of love and sacrifice, will begin the evening of April 5 this year. If you would like to know more, write or call for our free booklet, The Holy Days: God’s Master Plan, or watch the Tomorrow’s World telecast “The Real Jesus” today.

Notice what Jesus taught:

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

15 As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. (John 10:15)

12 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.  14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. ( John 15:12-14)

Keeping Passover and loving were among the commands that Jesus gave to His followers.

Passover showed the love of Christ through His sacrifice.  Passover shows that Jesus gave a great love by laying His life down for us and that the Father demonstrated His love by allowing the Son to do that.

Jesus knew the type of beating and death He was to suffer (John 12:27, 32-33, cf. Psalm 22), but submitted to it anyway (John 12:27-28).

Notice specifically that Jesus wanted His followers to continue to keep the Passover:

14 When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” (Luke 22:14-19).

In case some forgot, the Apostle Paul made it clear that Christ was the Passover lamb sacrifice, the related festival was to be kept by Christians, and that Christ’s sacrifice was about love:

7…For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.  8 Therefore let us keep the feast (1 Corinthians 5:7b-8a).

8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

Jesus demonstrated His love by giving His life on Passover.  Should we not show love towards Him by keeping it as He commanded?

Passover this year is after sunset Thursday 5th.

Israel’s Bunker-Busting Bombs and Plans to Attack Iran

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

COGwriter

The news states that Israel has been planning on attacking Iran for a while:

The Associated Press – March 13, 2012

JERUSALEM (AP) — For more than a decade, Israel has systematically built up its military specifically for a possible strike on Iranian nuclear facilities. It has sent its air force on long-distance training missions, procured American-made “bunker-busting” bombs and bolstered its missile defenses…

Israeli leaders, however, argue that time is quickly running out. They have grown increasingly vocal in their calls for tough concerted international action against Iran while stressing they are prepared to act alone if necessary.

Israeli defense officials believe Iran is capable of producing highly enriched weapons-grade uranium within six months. After that, it would require another year or two to develop a means of delivering a nuclear bomb, they predict.

But Israel believes the window to act will close much sooner than that…

Once Israeli planes reach Iran, they would come under fire from Iranian air-defense systems and warplanes. Israeli officials say they take these threats seriously, but believe Israel’s superior firepower and radar-jamming technology would allow them to perform the mission.

Defense News – March 11, 2012
Israel last week unveiled an improved precision, bunker-burrowing weapon, the latest in a series of operational upgrades aimed at honing what one official here labeled “a very credible military option” against the Iranian nuclear threat.
Built by state-owned Israel Military Industries (IMI), the 500-pound MPR-500 is an electro-optical or laser-guided projectile that can penetrate double-reinforced concrete walls or floors without breaking apart. It is designed as an upgrade to the U.S. Mk82, thousands of which are in Israel Air Force stocks, and can use Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits or Paveway for guidance…

Despite continued disagreement in Israel about the need for near-term unilateral action against Iran, the security official here insisted that Israel will have “a very credible option” should Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu order such an attack.

“If we have to act militarily, we will do so well beyond expectations in Washington and especially in Tehran,” the official here said.  http://www.defensenews.com/article/20120311/DEFREG04/303110001/Israel-Unveils-New-Bunker-Buster?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE

An attack by involving bunker-busting and other bombs would have devastating effects on Iran, yet it could also cause the USA debt, terrorist, and other problems. It could eliminate Iran as a major force in the Islamic world–something that I have written about for some time–as it is something that either needs to happen directly (through war) and/or indirectly (civil unrest and change in Iran).

I remain convinced that a regional war in the Middle East could get out of control, especially presuming Syria is involved (the USA keeps dropping hints about supporting the opposition in Syria that Syria would almost certainly get involved). Syria itself is having major problems now (notice a headline from today’s news Violence across Syria; UN awaits response from Damascus).

According to the Bible, the King of the South (Daniel 11:40) will rise up and we will see if this happens sometime after a conflict with Iran.  The Bible also seems to tell of a peace deal in the Middle East in Daniel 9:27 which needs to happen–and it may well take a regional war for such a deal to take place.

Even if this potential war between Iran and Israel is mainly regional, this does not mean that I believe that Israel (or the USA and its allies for that matter) will end up without potentially severe losses, only that because of international pressure, internal pressure, and Israel’s apparent intentions, Iran and Syria may start to feel so desperate that they might conclude that military conflict with Israel is their best option, and do something to provoke an attack by Israel.  If so, this would be a mistake on those nations’ part as they would not tend to do well either in such a conflict.

With the end of 6,000 years of human rule coming closer, and the apparent peace deal in Daniel 9:27 not yet confirmed, it may be that a war involving Israel will be soon.  Israel has been planning for the likelihood of an Iranian regional war for some time, and may decide that to do so in a presidential election year in the USA may be optimal for the support it would want from the USA.  We will see.

Easter or Passover for Christians?

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

COGwriter

Should Christians celebrate Easter?  What about Passover?

LCG minister Dexter Wakefield wrote (with this year’s dates added by COGwriter):

On April {8th}… billions of people will celebrate Easter…{a few days} earlier, after sunset {5th}…, many Christians will gather to observe the biblical Passover. Does it matter which festivals you observe? The answer may surprise you!

This spring, billions of people will memorialize Jesus Christ’s resurrection by observing the ancient rite of Easter. Although the festival’s name and seasonal observance pre-date Christianity, and the Easter Sunday observance does not even correspond to the actual day of Christ’s resurrection, most professing Christians assume that the non-Christian festival has now been “Christianized” into something of which Jesus Christ would approve. But is their assumption correct? Christians who study the Bible carefully, who look closely at the historical record, will come to a different conclusion. Rather than commemorate Christ’s resurrection on an incorrect date, they will commemorate His sacrifice by observing the Christian Passover, in the way the early Church did—in the way He instructed—as we find in Scripture…

Another well-known cultural anthropologist, Joseph Campbell, drew the conclusion that the “Christian” practice of Easter “occurs on the date of the annual resurrection of Adonis, which in the Christian cult became Easter. In both the pagan cult and the Christian, the resurrection is of a god” (Occidental Mythology, p. 138).

These authors are expressing a view commonly held among cultural anthropologists that there was a significant continuity in “Christianized” Gentile cultures with their pagan past. They had a tendency, over time, to superimpose Christian themes as a veneer over their existing pagan practices, which were already deeply ingrained in their societies and psyches. They are saying that in history, the incorporation of Easter as memorial to Christ’s resurrection is an adaptation of an earlier pagan resurrection festival. The practice did not originate in Christianity.

While it is true that most professing Christians observe Easter, reasoning that it commemorates Christ’s resurrection, the Bible actually commands Christians to observe a memorial to His sacrificial death! When Christ instructed His followers to keep the Passover with a fulfilled, Christian meaning, it became a memorial to His sacrifice as the Lamb of God—not to His resurrection. Christ avoided confusing the meaning of His unique sacrifice with the well-known pagan “resurrection” rites of His time and before.

The Bible

The Bible does not enjoin the celebration of Easter.  Translations such as the NKJV (Protestant) and Douay Rheims (Roman Catholic) also do not use the term Easter (at least one Protestant translation, KJV, erroneously translated the word everywhere else translated in that version as Passover as Easter in Acts 12:4–and all scholars recognize that this is not a true translation from the original  Greek).

The Old Testament uses the term Spring four or so times, and does, however, endorse certain religious observances for that time of the year. It also mentions that the year begins on the first day of a certain lunar month (called Abib or Nisan) which is normally the first day of Spring (though it does not actually use that term). Note that God defines when the year begins:

This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you (Exodus 12:2 NKJV, throughout unless otherwise noted).

The God-ordained religious festivals mentioned as occurring in what is the Spring season of the year include Passover, the Days of Unleavened Bread, and Pentecost.  Easter was not listed then.

Here is the mention of the first two:

‘These are the feasts of the LORD, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at their appointed times. On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the LORD’s Passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; seven days you must eat unleavened bread (Leviticus 23:4-6).

The above were clearly observed by Jesus, the Apostles, and the early Church (for additional documentation, please see the articles Passover and the Early Church, Melito’s Homily on the Passover, and Should Christians Keep the Days of Unleavened Bread?).

The term Spring is not mentioned in the New Testament. When referring to the early Spring season, the New Testament mentions biblical holy days, like Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread (for early Spring) and Pentecost (for late Spring)–it also mentions that Jesus and/or His disciples observed all of those. The Days of Unleavened Bread

The Apostle Paul taught:

Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth (1 Corinthians 5:7-8).

There is no doubt that early Christians kept Passover. And there is substantial evidence to show that they kept it along with the Days of Unleavened Bread, and in the Spring.

Early History Supports Passover

Notice, for example, a letter than Polycrates sent to the Roman Bishop Victor in the late second century concerning the date of Passover (the Church of Rome did not observe a time they called Easter that early):

We observe the exact day; neither adding, nor taking away. For in Asia also great lights have fallen asleep, which shall rise again on the day of the Lord’s coming, when he shall come with glory from heaven, and shall seek out all the saints. Among these are Philip, one of the twelve apostles, who fell asleep in Hierapolis; and his two aged virgin daughters, and another daughter, who lived in the Holy Spirit and now rests at Ephesus; and, moreover, John, who was both a witness and a teacher, who reclined upon the bosom of the Lord, and, being a priest, wore the sacerdotal plate. He fell asleep at Ephesus. And Polycarp in Smyrna, who was a bishop and martyr; and Thraseas, bishop and martyr from Eumenia, who fell asleep in Smyrna. Why need I mention the bishop and martyr Sagaris who fell asleep in Laodicea, or the blessed Papirius, or Melito, the Eunuch who lived altogether in the Holy Spirit, and who lies in Sardis, awaiting the episcopate from heaven, when he shall rise from the dead? All these observed the fourteenth day of the passover according to the Gospel, deviating in no respect, but following the rule of faith. And I also, Polycrates, the least of you all, do according to the tradition of my relatives, some of whom I have closely followed. For seven of my relatives were bishops; and I am the eighth. And my relatives always observed the day when the people put away the leaven. I, therefore, brethren, who have lived sixty-five years in the Lord, and have met with the brethren throughout the world, and have gone through every Holy Scripture, am not affrighted by terrifying words. For those greater than I have said ‘ We ought to obey God rather than man’ (Eusebius. Church History, Book V, Chapter 24. Translated by Arthur Cushman McGiffert. Excerpted from Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series Two, Volume 1. Edited by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace. American Edition, 1890. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

Notice that Polycrates said that he and the other early church leaders (like the Apostles Philip and John, and their successors like Polycarp, Thraseas, Eumenia, Sagaris, Papirius, Melito) would not deviate from the Bible, and that they knew the Bible taught them to keep the Passover on the correct date. Also notice that they always observed the day when the people put away the leaven. Polycrates also reminded the Roman bishop that true followers of Christ “obey God rather than men.”

Around 155 A.D. Polycarp of Smyrna went to Rome to deal with various heretics and he tried to persuade the bishop not to switch Passover to be on a Sunday. Irenaeus records this:

And when the blessed Polycarp was sojourning in Rome in the time of Anicetus, although a slight controversy had arisen among them as to certain other points…For neither could Anicetus persuade Polycarp to forego the observance [in his own way], inasmuch as these things had been always observed by John the disciple of our Lord, and by other apostles with whom he had been conversant; nor, on the other hand, could Polycarp succeed in persuading Anicetus to keep [the observance in his way], for he maintained that he was bound to adhere to the usage of the presbyters who preceded him. And in this state of affairs they held fellowship with each other; and Anicetus conceded to Polycarp in the Church the celebration of the Eucharist, by way of showing him respect (Irenaeus. FRAGMENTS FROM THE LOST WRITINGS OF IRENAEUS. Translated by Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson. Excerpted from Volume I of The Ante-Nicene Fathers (Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson, editors); American Edition copyright © 1885. Electronic version copyright © 1997 by New Advent, Inc).

The Eastern Orthodox realize that Passover was originally observed at night as one of their priests has written:

Our earliest sources for the annual celebration of the Christian Pascha come to us from the second century…The feast, however, must have originated in the apostolic period…According to the earliest documents, Pascha is described as a nocturnal celebration…(Calivas, Alkiviadis C. The Origins of Pascha and Great Week – Part I. Holy Cross Orthodox Press, 1992. Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, http://www.goarch.org/ourfaith/ourfaith8504 viewed 11/04/2011)

Over time, instead of being a holy day in memorial to Christ’s sacrifice at night, Easter became a resurrection holiday in the morning.

Notice what a respected Protestant scholar reported about the second century Christians:

The most important in this festival was the passover day, the 14th of Nisan…In it they ate unleavened bread, probably like the Jews, eight days through…there is no trace of a yearly festival of the resurrection among them…the Christians of Asia Minor appealed in favor of their passover solemnity on the 14th Nisan to John (Gieseler, Johann Karl Ludwig. A Text-book of Church History. Translated by Samuel Davidson, John Winstanley Hull, Mary A. Robinson. Harper & brothers, 1857, Original from the University of Michigan, Digitized Feb 17, 2006, p. 166).

In the late third century, Anatolius of Alexandria wrote the following about the Passover and related days:

I am aware that very many other matters were discussed by them, some of them with considerable probability, and others of them as matters of the clearest demonstration, by which they endeavour to prove that the festival of the Passover and unleavened bread ought by all means to be kept after the equinox…

But nothing was difficult to them with whom it was lawful to celebrate the Passover on any day when the fourteenth of the moon happened after the equinox. Following their example up to the present time all the bishops of Asia—as themselves also receiving the rule from an unimpeachable authority, to wit, the evangelist John, who leant on the Lord’s breast, and drank in instructions spiritual without doubt—were in the way of celebrating the Paschal feast, without question, every year, whenever the fourteenth day of the moon had come, and the lamb was sacrificed by the Jews after the equinox was past; not acquiescing, so far as regards this matter, with the authority of some…(THE PASCHAL CANON OF ANATOLIUS OF ALEXANDRIA. Chapters V,X, p. 415, 419).

This should be proof to any with “eyes to see and ears to hear” that some who professed Christ were keeping Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread centuries after Jesus died–and that this was also a valid tradition that the apostles practiced. And on the 14th day, which this year will be Thursday evening, April 5th, after sunset.

What about Easter?

Scholars know that early Christians observed Passover and did not observe it as a resurrection holiday.   Notice one account:

The first Christians celebrated the death of Jesus with a Pascha meal (eucharist) on the lunar date of the Jewish Passover (note 1 Cor. 5:7-8).

At first there was no annual celebration of the resurrection. Eventually, in the gentile world, the day of resurrection was added to the Pascha festival. That day was Sunday. At the Council of Nicea (325) it was ruled that Easter Sunday would be celebrated on the Sunday immediately following that full moon which came after the vernal equinox. At the same time the Council decided that the vernal equinox would be March 21 in the Julian calendar (Eusebius, Vit. Const. 3.18). (Synder GF. Irish Jesus, Roman Jesus: the formation of early Irish Christianity. Trinity Press International, 2002, p. 183)

The original practices of the earliest Christians was to observe Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread. Some apparently thought compromise with non-biblical holidays would substitute for biblical ones like the Days of Unleavened Bread.

But what about Easter?

Here is some of what The Catholic Encyclopedia teaches:

The English term, according to the Ven. Bede (De temporum ratione, I, v), relates to Estre, a Teutonic goddess of the rising light of day and spring, which deity, however, is otherwise unknown, even in the Edda (Simrock, Mythol., 362); Anglo-Saxon, eâster, eâstron; Old High German, ôstra, ôstrara, ôstrarûn; German, Ostern… Since Christ, the true Paschal Lamb, had been slain on the very day when the Jews, in celebration of their Passover, immolated the figurative lamb, the Jewish Christians in the Orient followed the Jewish method…For this observance they claimed the authority of St. John and St. Philip…

Easter eggs

…The custom may have its origin in paganism, for a great many pagan customs, celebrating the return of spring, gravitated to Easter…

The Easter rabbit

The Easter Rabbit lays the eggs, for which reason they are hidden in a nest or in the garden. The rabbit is a pagan symbol and has always been an emblem of fertility (Simrock, Mythologie, 551)…

Men and women

On Easter Monday the women had a right to strike their husbands, on Tuesday the men struck their wives… In the Neumark (Germany) on Easter Day the men servants whip the maid servants with switches; on Monday the maids whip the men. They secure their release with Easter eggs. These customs are probably of pre-Christian origin (Reinsberg-Düringsfeld, Das festliche Jahr, 118).

The Easter fire

The Easter Fire is lit on the top of mountains (Easter mountain, Osterberg) and must be kindled from new fire, drawn from wood by friction (nodfyr); this is a custom of pagan origin in vogue all over Europe, signifying the victory of spring over winter. The bishops issued severe edicts against the sacrilegious Easter fires (Conc. Germanicum, a. 742, c.v.; Council of Lestines, a. 743, n. 15), but did not succeed in abolishing them everywhere. The Church adopted the observance into the Easter ceremonies…(Holweck, Frederick. “Easter.” The Catholic Encyclopedia. Vol. 5. New York: Robert Appleton Company, 1909. 12 Mar. 2012 <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/05224d.htm>)

Bede, was a monk in England, who died 26 May 735.  He correctly noted that Easter was not a Christian term, but one of a pagan goddess.   As The Catholic Encyclopediaindicate, many of the traditions associated with Easter come from paganism and were not from the Bible nor early apostolic tradition.

Thus, the Romans admit that the name Easter is the name of a pagan goddess, many of its practices are of pagan origin, and that the churches in Asia Minor (which they call the Orient) continued to observe Passover on the date that the Jews and Jesus did, Nisan 14.

The Bible itself also condemns certain practices, now associated with Easter, such as hot Easter buns/cakes (Jeremiah 7:18), the worship towards the sun in the east (Ezekiel 8:15-18), and the worship of Astarte/Ishtar/Ashtaroth (other spellings of the word Easter).

52% of Mississippi Republicans think Barack Obama is Muslim; 45% in Alabama

Monday, March 12th, 2012

COGwriter

A new survey was done related to perceptions of Obama’s faith:

By BYRON TAU|

3/12/12 2:26 PM EDT

The incorrect belief that President Obama is Muslim is alive and well among some southern Republican voters, according to a new poll.

According to the latest PPP survey, a full majority — 52 percent — of Mississippi Republicans polled say that Obama is a Muslim, with only 12 percent of voters correctly identifying him as a Christian. Another 36 percent surveyed report that they are unsure about the president’s faith.

In Alabama, PPP finds that 45 percent of GOP voters report that Obama is a Muslim, with 41 percent uncertain. Only 14 percent correctly identify Obama as a Christian.  http://www.politico.com/politico44/2012/03/doubts-about-obamas-faith-persist-among-gop-faithful-117169.html

I and many others do not consider that Barack Obama is truly a Christian, but that is the faith that he publicly professes to be at times.

Yet, the Muslim charge is not a new one.  It came up from time to time when he was running for president in 2008.

Since he did grow up in Muslim Indonesia and had more early Muslim contacts than anyone else ever elected as President of the United States, he would probably have more reasons than most U.S. presidents to have sympathy for Muslim perspectives. Here is some of what Barack Obama’s “Fight the Smears” website quoted about this back in 2008:

Newsweek…Obama’s only personal contact with Islam came as a boy when he moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, with a stepfather who mixed his Islam with Hindu and Animist traditions…

Boston Globe…His Kenyan paternal grandfather and Indonesian stepfather were Muslim…

Thus, while the selected quotes seem to have been intended by Obama supporters to minimize his ties to Islam, Barack Obama had more early ties to Islam than any ever elected to becoming President of the United States. He also repeated his full name, Barack Hussein Obama, the 2 times I heard him on his inauguration as USA president (seemingly emphasizing the common Islamic name “Hussein”) in 2009.

Furthermore, notice the following item:

Barack Obama joined Muslim prayers at school, teacher says
The Australian – Nov 8, 2010

AS a schoolboy in Jakarta, Barack Obama attended Muslim prayer sessions with his classmates against the wishes of his mother. The US President’s former grade three teacher said that Mr Obama – who was known as “Barry” when he attended the Menteng One school in Jakarta – studied the Koran and went to classes on Islam, despite the objections of Ann Dunham, a Catholic. (The Times.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/barack-obama-joined-muslim-prayers-at-school-teacher-says/story-e6frg6so-1225949239614)

Whether he attended prayer sessions to learn about Islam or to fit in, apparently Barack Obama was more involved in Islam that his mother wanted him to be.

Barack Obama seems to be a supporter of a Constantinian religion (comes out of the Greco-Roman tradition, not the Church of God) which claims Christ. Yet, he does not seem to be highly involved with it. Whether he makes the public appearances in religious settings to give the impression he is Christian or if this is what he believes is not clear to me.

Barack Obama has made public gestures supportive of Islam (like participating in Ramadan-related activities) and the Hindu faith (he admitted carrying one of their monkey-god charms in June 2008 and in November 2010 danced at a Diwali celebration). This suggests that he is neither truly Muslim or Christian as one true to either of those faiths would not carry a pagan deity as a good-luck charm.

Those of us who do take the Bible literally do not understand how one can support abortion on demand, carry idols, etc. then expect others to believe that they are Christian.

I have never believed that Barack Obama was a real Christian and still do not.  What he truly feels about Islam and Christianity is unclear to me.  He may well decide make various public statements this campaign season to stress his claimed Christian ties, especially if Mitt Romney becomes the Republican nominee.

Taliban and Netanyahu seeking revenge

Flag of the Taliban

COGwriter

Talk of revenge is all over the news today:

Taliban vows revenge after US soldier allegedly kills 16 Afghan civilians

Fox News – ‎12 March 2012
KABUL, Afghanistan – The Taliban is vowing revenge against the US after an American soldier allegedly shot and killed 16 Afghan civilians in a Sunday rampage.

The US soldier incident was reported about here yesterday (American Kills Afghanis, Israelis Kill Palestinians).

In my 2009 book, 2012 and the Rise of the Secret Sect, I warned:

…writings suggest that the end of the U.S.A. will thus be in the 21st century. And as far as Asian forces go, this could be interpreted to include terrorists from places like Afghanistan and others parts of Asia.

The reality is that Islamic terrorists are not the only ones that tend to be interested in revenge.  Notice also the following from Israel today:

Jerusalem Post – ‎12 March 2012 By YAAKOV KATZ AND JPOST.COM STAFF Combination of air strikes, defense technology and Israeli resilience allows the IDF to expand its operations…
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Monday said that the IDF will continue to strike terrorists in the Gaza Strip with great power and aggression…Speaking to a Likud faction meeting, the prime minister said of anyone planning to harm Israeli citizens, “We’ll hit them.” …Barak warns that those who attack Israeli civilians “will be punished.”

Terrorism is wrong, but is also a prophesied curse:

14 ‘But if you do not obey Me, and do not observe all these commandments,
15 and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant,
16 I also will do this to you:
I will even appoint terror over you…(Leviticus 26:14-16)

Although political leaders will do what they think is in their interest and have certain rights with “the sword” (Romans 13:4), the Bible, of course, also teaches:

17 And the way of peace they have not known.”
18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” (Romans 3:17-18)

19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 Therefore

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:19-21)

And while this world does not wish to know live God’s way, the Bible also says:

9 In this manner, therefore, pray:  Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:9-10)

20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.”  Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! 21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. (Revelation 22:20-21)

War leads to war, vengeance to more vengeance.  The Kingdom of God is the solution to this world’s problems, killing is not.

Times of India: Circumcision may reduce prostate cancer risk

Monday, March 12th, 2012

COGwriter

The Times of India reported another possible health benefit for circumcision:

 Circumcision lowers prostate cancer risk

Times of India – ‎12 March 2012

Circumcision before a male’s first sexual intercourse may help protect against prostate cancer, a new study has found. The study, conducted by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, suggests that circumcision can hinder infection and suggests that circumcision can hinder infection and inflammation that may lead to this malignancy.

Infections are known to cause cancer, and research suggests that sexually transmitted infections may contribute to the development of prostate cancer.

Additionally, certain sexually transmitted infections can be prevented by circumcision.

Thousands of years ago, God told Abraham to implement circumcision:

9 And God said to Abraham: “As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. 10 This is My covenant which you shall keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you: Every male child among you shall be circumcised; 11 and you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between Me and you. 12 He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised, every male child in your generations, he who is born in your house or bought with money from any foreigner who is not your descendant. 13 He who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money must be circumcised, and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised male child, who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.” (Genesis 17:9-14)

Later, the Old Testament also provided instruction to the children of Israel to circumcise their male babies:

1 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘If a woman has conceived, and borne a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as in the days of her customary impurity she shall be unclean. 3 And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. (Leviticus 12:1-3)

(Note: Male circumcision is nothing like so-called female circumcision, which is NOT enjoined in the Bible and should not be done.)

Jesus once stated:

22 Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. (John 7:22)

Now, although the New Testament teaches that Gentile adult males do not have to be circumcised in order to be Christians (Acts 15:24-29), the Apostle Paul had Timothy circumcised anyway (Acts 16:3).

Even though the apostles ruled that adult Gentiles did not have to be circumcised in Acts 15, my own reading into early church history suggests that many Christians continued to circumcise their male babies after this declaration (though not necessarily in all Sabbath-keeping groups).

The early 20th century theologian J.J.L. Ratton reported:

The early Church at Jerusalem, retained most of the distinctive customs of the Jews, such as circumcision, kosher meats, the Jewish Sabbath, the Jewish rites, and worship of the Temple. Our Lord, Himself, lived the exterior life of a Jew, even so far as the observance of Jewish religious customs was concerned. The early Church of Jerusalem followed His example. The Jews looked upon the Hebrew Christians in Jerusalem simply as a Jewish sect, which they called the sect of the Nazarenes. (Ratton JJL The Apocalypse of St. John: a commentary on the Greek text, 2nd edition. R. & T. Washbourne, ltd., 1915. Original fromt he University of Michigan. Digitized Jun 12, 2007, p. 4)

Now, it should be mentioned that in the second century, non-Nazarene professors of Christ, like the heretic Justin, did not practice circumcision.

According to the fourth century Catholic historian Eusebius, starting in the first century:

James, the first that had obtained the episcopal seat in Jerusalem after the ascension of our Saviour…The first, then, was James, the so-called brother of the Lord; the second, Symeon; the third, Justus; the fourth, Zacchæus; the fifth, Tobias; the sixth, Benjamin; the seventh, John; the eighth, Matthias; the ninth, Philip; the tenth, Seneca; the eleventh, Justus; the twelfth, Levi; the thirteenth, Ephres; the fourteenth, Joseph; and finally, the fifteenth, Judas. These are the bishops of Jerusalem that lived between the age of the apostles and the time referred to, all of them belonging to the circumcision. (Eusebius. The History of the Church, 2005 Book III, Chapter V, Verses 2,3.& Book IV, Chapter 5, Verses 2-4 . Translated by A. Cushman McGiffert. Digireads.com Publishing, Stilwell (KS), pp. 45, 71)

But circumcision was not just the practice with the first and second century bishops of Jerusalem. Epiphanius wrote of this group from the time of 69/70 A.D. until his day, that he called the Nazarenes:

All Christians were called Nazarenes once…They were so-called followers of the apostles…they dedicate themselves to the law…However, everyone called the Christians Nazarenes as I said before. This appears from the accusation against Paul…[Acts 24:5]…For they use not only the New Testament but also the Old…For they also accept the resurrection of the dead and that everything has origin in God…Only in this respect they differ from the Jews and Christians: with the Jews they do not agree because of their belief in Christ, with the Christians because they are trained in the Law, in circumcision, the Sabbath and the other things…(Epiphanius. Panarion 29 as cited in Pritz R. Nazarene Jewish Christianity. Magnas, Jerusalem, 1988, pp. 30-34)

Here is some of what the Catholic scholar Bagatti wrote about some of the gentile Nazarenes in the fourth and probably fifth centuries, that were sometimes derisively referred to as Minim by some Jews:

In fact some Minim of gentile stock, following St. Paul, taught that the Law had been abolished with the exception of the Decalogue…Some Jews…intensified the observance of the Law…especially regarding circumcision and the Sabbath. The Judaeo-Christians in this were in accord with the Jews…(Bagatti, Bellarmino. Translated by Eugene Hoade. The Church from the Circumcision. Nihil obstat: Marcus Adinolfi, 13 Maii 1970. Imprimi potest: Herminius Roncari, 14 Junii 1970. Imprimatur: +Albertus Gori, die 26 Junii 1970. Franciscan Printing Press, Jerusalem, 1971, p. 108)

While it was not a required practice, throughout history, many “Nazarene” Christians have practiced circumcision, not as a commandment, but as a biblically-based concept.

One of the inquisitors in the Middle Ages found that a certain type of “heretic” (in his mind) uniformly observed the Sabbath and sometimes (though apparently not always) observed circumcision (Davis, Tamar. A General History of the Sabbatarian Churches. 1851; Reprinted 1995 by Commonwealth Publishing, Salt Lake City, p. 88).

Thus, it seems that circumcision was (and still is) often practiced by many trying to be faithful Christians. And because of “Judeo-Christian influence” (like from the Bible), this may be why there have always been a relatively high proportion of circumcised males in the USA (though this may be changing).

While the Bible does not list health benefits that come from circumcision, it would make sense that the Creator of the universe would only recommend physical practices that were beneficial for His human creation.  Possibly reducing the risk of prostate cancer seems to be another good reason to circumcise.

TW: Factories for the fatherless?

The latest TW News & Prophecy from the Living Church of God has the following:

Factories for the fatherless.

Every year in the United States, 30,000-60,000 children are born from sperm donations. As more women want “husband-free” children and “gay marriage” increases, the “reproductive industry” makes vast sums of money through sperm donations. Sperm donors frequently sire dozens of children, and some hundreds, most of whom never know their father. But the “industry” creating fatherless children is rife with problems.Donors, parents, and medical personnel are worried about “…potential negative consequences of having so many children fathered by the same donors, including the possibility that genes for rare diseases could be spread more widely through the population. Some experts are even calling attention to the increased odds of accidental incest between half sisters and half brothers, who often live close to one another” (New York Times, November 5, 2011). A 2010 study of children born via sperm donation identified enormous mental health problems for children of “donors” (OneNewsNow.com, March 2, 2012).

God intended for all children to grow up in intact families complete with a father and a mother–something that many today want to deny. Millennia ago, God warned, “You shall not afflict any widow or fatherless child” (Exodus 22:22). Today’s reproductive industry, supporting selfish and perverted would-be parents, is afflicting the fatherless before they are even born!

One day soon, Jesus Christ will return and restore vital laws designed to support strong families, including teaching people how to have happy marriages. For more about this, read our booklet, God’s Plan for Happy Marriage.

Of course, it is not just happening in the USA.  But since the USA should know the Bible, it has even less excuse than some other lands who are doing the same.
