Purim: What Some Jews (and Others) Are Thinking About Iran

Claimed Tomb of Esther and Mordecai in Hamadan, Iran

COGwriter

Now, many Jews around the world are celebrating the national holiday called Purim from chapter 9 of the Book of Esther.  With Iran and Israel in the news a lot, some have wondered if history was warning Israel that it may have to again attack some within the bounds of ancient Persia (represented by an ancient leader Haman), modern Iran:

For some, Purim holds Iran-Israel lessons

Al-Arabiya – 7 March 2012

Jews mark the holiday of Purim by reading the Book of Esther from sundown and by dressing up as characters from the story…

This year the holiday has additional meaning for some, providing historical parallels as Israel’s leaders weigh their response to Iran’s nuclear program…senior ultra-Orthodox rabbi Ovadia Yosef warning last month: “There is now also a Haman in Persia.”

Some in Israel do not believe that recent promises from US President Obama can be trusted despite his reassurances (this week  Obama {said} to Israel: `We got your back’).  Notice how one Jewish Rabbi used the story of Esther as evidence that they should be cautious this week:

Twenty-five hundred years ago Queen Esther goes before Persia’s King Achashverosh to plead for her fellow Jews; and today Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visits the White House to ask President Obama to help stop Iran (Biblical Persia) from building a nuclear weapon to annihilate all the Jews of Israel.

Let us start with Achashverosh. When Esther tells him that Haman wants to annihilate every Jew in the Persian Empire, Achashverosh reacts with anger: “Who plotted to do such a thing!” he cries indignantly.

Who, indeed?

Every year at Purim even Jewish children ask, “Wasn’t this the same Achashverosh who gave Haman his signet ring to perpetrate a Persian Jewish Holocaust?  What’s he doing looking so shocked now?!”

Ah, my dear young people, welcome to the world of political expediency. When it served the king’s interest to murder the Jews he ordered their extermination. When it served his interest to gain their popularity he said the ancient equivalent of “Don’t worry Esther, we’ve got your back.”

The Jewish People have never expressed any trust in King Achashverosh.

What about trusting today’s most powerful man in the world? http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/flashpoint/2012/03/weve-got-your-back-esther

So, there are concerns by some in Israel that it always needs to be ready, on its own, basically because many believe history teaches that foreign politicians cannot really be trusted.  And this seems consistent with what the Israeli Prime Minister said and did this week:

March 7, 2012 3:24 PM EST

During his recent visit with Barack Obama in Washington, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly gave the U.S. president a gift that carried heavy symbolic meaning with respect to Israel’s spiraling crisis with Iran.  Obama received from Netanyahu a copy of the Biblical Book of Esther, which tells the ancient story of how the Jews of Persia, which is modern-day Iran, fought back and thwarted a plot to annihilate them…Now in 2012, an attack on Iran during Purim would be highly symbolic. Perhaps Netanyahu fancies himself as a modern-day “Mordechai” and views Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a contemporary “Haman.” Indeed, like the ill-fated Haman, Ahmadinejad has also called for the annihilation of the Jews and Israel.

Goldberg: Netanyahu Gives Obama a Message to Heed‎ BusinessWeek

The prime minister of Israel is many things, but subtle is not one of them. The message of Purim is: When the Jews see a murderous conspiracy forming against them, they will act to disrupt the plot…This time, he made it somewhat differently: “My friends, this is not 1944,” he told Aipac. “Today we have a state of our own. The purpose of the Jewish state is to secure the Jewish future. That is why Israel must always have the ability to defend itself, against any threat.”

And then he added, as if he wasn’t making himself clear, “We must always remain the masters of our own fate.”

Others, including non-Jews, are wondering about the credibility of Iran based upon what seems to have been going on over there related to its nuclear site.  Notice some such reports:

CNN – ‎7 March 2012 By the CNN Wire Staff Vienna, Austria (CNN) — Iran is not open about its nuclear program, but it should be, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog agency said Wednesday.
.
Vienna:March 8, 2012
Satellite images of an Iranian military facility appear to show trucks and earth-moving vehicles at the site, indicating an attempted cleanup of radioactive traces possibly left by tests of a nuclear-weapon trigger, diplomats told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
.
The assertions from the diplomats, all nuclear experts accredited to the International Atomic Energy Agency, could add to the growing international pressure on Iran over its nuclear program, which Tehran insists is for peaceful purposes.
Wall Street Journal – ‎7 March 2012 By JAY SOLOMON WASHINGTON—Satellite imagery taken of Iran is raising concerns inside the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog that Tehran has been “cleansing” a military site that the agency believes may have been involved in nuclear-weapons development, according to Western officials briefed on the intelligence.
The situation in Iran is precarious.  Since Bible prophecy does not show that Iran will be a major power in the end, something must happen to change the current status.  Something will, and it may involve armed conflict. Jews are aware that their Purim festival pictures the defeat of an enemy that was based in Iran thousands of years ago.  It is something that some of them have connected to the current situation.
.
Yet, while God will not let Israel be completely destroyed, unlike the events in the Book of Esther, He may well let Israel suffer mightily if there is a soon coming (within a year or so) regional war.

Harold Camping Group Finally Admits the Truth: States His Predictions were Sinful

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Harold Egbert Camping

COGwriter

According to Harold Camping, Jesus was to return on May 21, 2011 as well as October 21, 2011 (he also had other dates previously).  All of his dates have thus far been proven false.  His group (Family Radio), presumably with his approval, posted the following letter:

We realize that many people are hoping they will know the date of Christ’s return. In fact for a time Family Radio fell into that kind of thinking…

We were even so bold as to insist that the Bible guaranteed that Christ would return on May 21 and that the true believers would be raptured. Yet this incorrect and sinful statement allowed God to get the attention of a great many people who otherwise would not have paid attention…

We tremble before God as we humbly ask Him for forgiveness for making that sinful statement. We are so thankful that God is so loving that He will forgive even this sin.  http://www.familyradio.com/announcement2.html?keepThis=true&TB2_iframe=true&height=440&width=611

Harold Camping’s pronouncements were sinful.  And while he and his group want to claim that they did good by making false prophecies, the is not something that the God of the Bible would advocate.

Notice a couple of warnings about false prophets:

22 when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him. (Deuteronomy 18:22).

1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber. (2 Peter 2:1-3).

I do not consider that Harold Camping was or is a real Christian and he has repeatedly proven to be a false prophet.

The fact is that there are many false prophets who claim to be Christian cause the Bible to be blasphemed.  One who claims to be in the Church of God (Ronald Weinland) insists that the period of the Great Tribulation began years ago (as did Harold Camping), and that Jesus will return on May 27, 2012.  Ron Weinland, of course, will be proven wrong.

It remains to be seen whether or not Ronald Weinland will publicly admit his false prophecies are and have been sinful (he has made promises to do something similar in the past and failed to do so).

People like Harold Camping and Ron Weinland give scoffers ammunition to argue against Bible prophecy–as will any who insist that the Mayan 12/21/2012 date can be the end of the world.  All of them will be shown to be wrong.

Remember that the Apostle Peter warned:

…scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, 4 and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water, 6 by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water. 7 But the heavens and the earth which are now preserved by the same word, are reserved for fire until the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

8 But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.  (2 Peter 3:3-9)

Despite false prophets and scoffers, the Bible is true and Jesus will return–just not for at least seven more years.  There may continue to be many other false prophets will rise up until then.

Those who are interested in the truth about Harold Camping, Ronald Weinland (who even claims to be one of the two witnesses), Mayan prophecies, and when the Bible shows that Jesus can return, may wish to study the following articles:

Why does the Bible show that Ron Weinland is a false prophet? He also has at least one other view that suggests that he is not part of the Church of God.

Sarkozy: France Has Too Many Foreigners

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Nicolas Sarkozy, President of France
Nicolas Sarkozy

COGwriter

The president of France made the news:

(CBS News) Trailing in opinion polls to his main opponent in the upcoming presidential election, France’s current President Nicholas Sarkozy took a sharp turn to the right Tuesday by declaring that France has “too many foreigners,” the BBC reports.

“Our system of integration is working more and more badly, because we have too many foreigners on our territory and we can no longer manage to find them accommodation, a job, a school,” Nicolas Sarkozy said on Tuesday, according to Al Jazeera.  http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503543_162-57392065-503543/sarkozy-france-has-too-many-foreigners/

What kind of foreigner is President Sarkozy warning against?

President Sarkozy himself is the son of a Hungarian immigrant, so apparently he would not be opposing most other Europeans as foreigners.

While some believe he means gypsies (and they would likely be part of his complaint), President Sarkozy most likely is also referring to Turkish and other Islamic immigrants.  The reality is that throughout Europe anti-Islamic sentiment is rising up and countries like France have placed bans on Islamic items such as wearing burqas (see France Begins Burqa Ban).  France may see major riots and perhaps including the destruction of much of Paris (see September 12, 2010 post Civil Unrest in France?).

LCG reported the following earlier about the intent of the law:

President Sarkozy’s reason for the law is that “We are an old nation united around a certain idea of human dignity, and in particular of a woman’s dignity, around a certain idea of how to live together.” Muslims comprise approximately 7.5% of the French population (AFP, May 19, 2010).

Lest people believe that this anti-Islamic position is limited to the French President, it has been expressed by the Chancelor of Germany (Germany’s Merkel: Multiculturalism a Total Failure and Angela Merkel wants more Christianity in Germany) and politicians in other European nations, including the Netherlands (see Anti-Islamic PVV Gaining in the Netherlands) and those involved in the selection of the first “permanent president” of the European Union (EU Apparently Selected Herman Van Rompuy as its President, and He Does Not Welcome Turkey as it is Islamic).

The Bible tells of a basically European kingdom that will be partially strong, partially weak, and with a fragile unity (Daniel 2:41-43).  This kingdom will have a religion and it will not be Islam.  Europe is prophesied to make a deceitful deal with an Islamic power (Daniel 11:27) and this deal might partially happen because of immigration policies and civil unrest.

The Bible also tells of a time when a European power will reorganize (Revelation 17:12-13).  While I do not believe that we are to the point of fulfilling the reorganization required by Revelation 17:12-13, it seems that a variety of steps will be necessary for the final reorganization to occur. Some of those steps, especially if they involve austerity/budget cuts and immigration policies, may stir violent protests in the future. Violent protests can lead to militaristic leaders rising up, and a major militaristic leader rising up is consistent with biblical prophecy (cf. Daniel 11:39-44; Revelation 13:3-4).

Many events are aligning with Bible prophecy.  Jesus said to watch (Mark 13:33-37; Luke 21:36).

Dark Matter and the Universe

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

COGwriter

‘Dark matter’ has been in the news:

Dark Matter, Dark Energy And The Shadow Universe
NPR: March 6, 2012…

Dark Matter and Dark Energy have nothing (as far as we know) to do with each other. The only thing they have in common is that evocative adjective “dark,” which, for astrophysicists, simply means we can see an effect but we can’t see the cause

Over the last few decades something remarkable has been observed. The matter and energy we can see is moving too fast to be driven by its own gravitational force. Based purely on the motions of galaxies, astronomers have been forced to infer the presence of matter that’s undetectable with light-gathering telescopes.

Likewise, based on the motions of the universe as a whole (and its structure), astronomers have been forced to infer the presence of energy that cannot be directly detected.

Dark Matter is a form of mass (some new kind of particle) that simply does not emit light.

Dark-Matter Behavior Puzzles Astronomers

‎Sci-Tech Today – 5 March 2012
Astronomers using data from NASA’s Hubble Telescope have spotted what appears to be a core of dark matter left behind from a wreck between massive clusters of galaxies. The result could challenge current theories about dark matter and how it behaves. When galaxy clusters crash they expect to see galaxies tagging along with the dark matter…

“This result is a puzzle,” astronomer James Jee of the University of California, Davis, said. “Dark matter is not behaving as predicted, and it’s not obviously clear what is going on. It is difficult to explain this Hubble observation with the current theories of galaxy formation and dark matter.”

FWIW, I have long realized that the gravitational explanation involving various parts of the universe was flawed.  The current information that seems to be related to “dark matter” helps provide additional proof that my assessment was correct.  The fact that everything in the universe does not always behave as many scientists have tended to believe is simply additional proof that human beings do not really know as much as they tend to think that they do.

Today’s commentary from the Living Church of God has the following information about the universe:

By Roger Meyer (guest columnist) | Tuesday, March 06, 2012

Only recently have astrophysicists been able to offer a substantial hypothesis as to what it is that holds the universe together and keeps it from flying apart. Yet you do not have to be a physicist to know the simple answer!

Astrophysicists look into the heavens and capture images and data with various scientific instruments. They know that the total mass of all matter isn’t enough to provide the gravity needed to keep everything in the universe from flying apart. They are left to ponder the question, “What is it that is holding the universe together?”

International teams of astronomers scan stars and galaxies that are unimaginable distances away. Using modern instruments and means of detection, they have detected a mysterious cosmic force and have hypothesized that it may be the answer to the question. They call it “dark matter.”

At the same time, the physics of the astrophysical realm is at odds with that of atomic physics. Albert Einstein spent the latter part of his life seeking a unified field theory that would describe nature’s forces and elementary particles in a unified way. Physicists know that the separate physics theories and the equations for both are incompatible. The equations do not work when the two are brought together. Thus the need for a unifying theory that harmonizes the incredibly small with the incredibly large.

The answer did not come in Einstein’s day, nor has it yet come in our day. But today there is a theory that seeks to unify the physics principles of both the cosmic and molecular levels. It is called superstring theory.

The superstring theory is an advancement toward a unified theory. The theory redefines some of science’s existing concepts of time and space. With this, science’s understanding of light, gravity, black holes, dark matter and the dimensions of the universe is increasing. At the same time, science is gaining greater understanding of the forces, properties and behaviors of subatomic particles such as protons, neutrons, electrons, quarks, neutrinos, positrons, muons, photons, bosons and gluons, along with an as yet undetected or unconfirmed particle called the “graviton.”

All of these particles have a force or power. Some are weak and some are strong, as they either attract or repel one another. Yet, somehow, they are so perfectly balanced that neither tiny molecules nor giant galaxies fly apart. Instead, they remain harmoniously spinning and intact. Why this is so is what is not yet understood. String theory may hold an answer.

String theory says that everything consists of combinations of vibrating strands or loops which appear as the various subatomic particles having differing mass and force, depending on the frequency of vibration. Of course, debate continues along with continued study of this theory. And already there is an extension of string theory, named M-theory, which seeks to unify the various string theories. And there are small but growing numbers of theoretical physicists who are becoming dissatisfied with string theory altogether, and are looking to other theories for the explanation that has long eluded them.

The Bible, by contrast, offers a very simple answer to the question of what holds everything together. In Colossians 1:15-17, we read that Jesus Christ created all things that are in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. Quite simply, “in Him all things consist.”  The Darby translation phrases it that “all things subsist together by him.”

Indeed, even while scientists continue to explore the mathematical and physical principles behind the workings of the universe, Christians can see the “big picture.” The entire universe, from the largest galaxy down to the smallest subatomic particle, subsists—continues to exist and receive what is necessary for it to function as intended—through Jesus Christ. “For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever” (Romans 11:36).

Did you know that this magnificent and mysterious universe is actually our inheritance in Christ? It is part of our ultimate destiny as children and heirs of God. To learn more, read our article, “The Universe and You!” and our booklet, Your Ultimate Destiny.

There is a lot that human beings do not know about the universe that God does. Completely how God uses gravity, “dark matter,” and other unknown forms of energy in the universe is simply one of them. The God that made the universe also made you.  And He knows more about you and what you need than you probably think He does.

Netanyahu Gave Obama ‘Book of Esther’: Prelude to Iran Attack?

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

COGwriter

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu seems to wish to attack Iran:

CBS News 6 March 2012…
When the two spoke to reporters Monday, Netanyahu never mentioned diplomacy…Mr. Obama predicted there would be difficult months ahead.

The Israelis aren’t saying whether Netanyahu agreed to hold off on military action…Netanyahu gave Mr. Obama a copy of the biblical book of Esther, which tells of a Persian ruler in what is now Iran who ordered the execution of all the Jews in his kingdom — but the Jews prevailed in battle.

As he gave the gift, the prime minister is reported to have told the president, “Even back then, they wanted to wipe us out.”

MyrtleBeachOnline.com – ‎5 March 2012 p.m.
Netanyahu left no doubt about the seriousness of Monday’s talks. Looking directly at Obama, he reiterated Israel’s right to take unilateral military action against Iran’s nuclear facilities, which the Jewish state – estimated to have several hundred nuclear warheads of its own that it refuses to acknowledge officially – views as an existential threat.
Algemeiner Journal, Brooklin – March 5, 2012

Channel 2 in Israel, sourcing a “senior American official”, says that the decision has already been made by the Israeli government to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities.

All U.S. intelligence officials are confident the Israeli leadership has already decided to attack Iran, unless a significant change happens in the coming weeks or months with the Iranian nuclear program,” Channel 2 reports.

Fears Obama meeting will not prevent Israeli strike on Iran
Sydney Morning Herald – 7 March 2012 (In Australia, March 6, 2012 in USA)…

Mr Netanyahu ended the day with a speech to American Jewish leaders in which he said he wouldn’t let Israel live in the ”shadow of annihilation”.

The US fears a military strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities would set off a regional war in the volatile Middle East.

Whether an attack is eminent or not remains to be seen.

Despite meeting with President Obama yesterday, Prime Minister Netanyahu and many in Israel simply do not trust the Obama Administration to act quickly enough and have Israel’s best interests at heart.

By giving US President Obama a copy of the Book of Esther, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is basically telling him that the Jews have attacked and destroyed their enemies just before they were to attack and annihilate the Jewish people:

1  Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day, the time came for the king’s command and his decree to be executed. On the day that the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, the opposite occurred, in that the Jews themselves overpowered those who hated them. 2 The Jews gathered together in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hands on those who sought their harm. And no one could withstand them, because fear of them fell upon all people. 3 And all the officials of the provinces, the satraps, the governors, and all those doing the king’s work, helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them. 4 For Mordecai was great in the king’s palace, and his fame spread throughout all the provinces; for this man Mordecai became increasingly prominent. 5 Thus the Jews defeated all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, with slaughter and destruction, and did what they pleased with those who hated them. (Esther 9:1-5)

People in Israel will start celebrating their destruction of their Persian/Iranian-related enemies in the Book of Esther tomorrow evening in a holiday called Purim (Esther 9:26-32, see also Purim: Israel vs. Iran).   This story is well known by the people in the land of Israel–and is something that many in Israel are wondering if it is about to have a modern fulfillment.

Israel simply does not feel that it can trust Iran, which makes sense as Iran’s leadership has repeatedly stated it wants to eliminate Israel.  Many in Israel also simply do not trust the Obama Administration to always be looking out for Israel’s best interests.

Notice a news item from today’s Jerusalem Post:

Aside from these rather uncooperative comments, under Obama the US has adopted policies and taken actions that have endangered Israel militarily on all fronts and in fundamental ways. With Obama at the helm the US not only stood back and allowed Hezbollah and Iran to take over Lebanon. The US has continued to supply the Hezbollah-controlled Lebanese military with sophisticated US arms.

Under Obama, the US intervened in Egypt’s internal politics to empower the Muslim Brotherhood and overthrow Hosni Mubarak. The transformation of Israel’s border with Egypt from a peaceful border to a hostile one is the direct consequence of the US-supported overthrow of Mubarak and the US-supported rise of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafists. These are indisputable facts. Their military repercussions are enormous and entirely negative.

Then there is Syria. For more than six months, Obama effectively sided with Bashar Assad against his own people who rose up against him…

There have been reports that the US has warned Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Saudi Arabia about the possibility that Assad’s ballistic missiles and chemical and biological arsenals may be transferred to terrorists. Such a prospect constitutes a clear and present danger to US national security – as well as Israel’s national security. Indeed, the threat of proliferation of WMD is so dangerous that the administration could be expected to take preemptive steps to destroy or commandeer those arsenals. Certainly it could be expected to support an Israeli operation to do so. But according to reports, Obama has sufficed with empty warnings to the Arabs – not Israel – that this could perhaps be a problem.

By failing to act against Assad, the Obama administration is effectively acting as the guardian of Iran’s most important regional ally. That is, far from enhancing Israel’s military posture, Obama’s behavior towards Syria is enhancing Iran’s military posture. He is acting in a manner one would expect Iran’s ally to behave, not in the manner that one would expect Israel’s ally to behave.  http://www.jpost.com/Opinion/Op-EdContributors/Article.aspx?id=260662

There are many reports of concerns in Israel.  The above information has likely not been lost on Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.  However, there have been reports that the Obama Administration has tried to warn Israel that the cost to Israel for an attack will be larger than it seems to feel–and on this, I do agree with the Obama Administration.  But, since Prime Minister Netanyahu believes that Iran may actually try to wipe Israel off the map, he may have decided that almost no cost is too high to eliminate the Iranian threat.

Somehow, Iran (who is not the leader of the biblical King of the South in Daniel 11:40–but someone associated with the Muslim Brotherhood might be) will need to become less of a factor in the Islamic world and it may happen because Iranian leaders may miscalculate the strength of its adversaries, including economic sanctions and a possible major attack by Israel.

This does not mean that I believe that Israel (or the USA and its allies for that matter) will end up without potentially severe losses, only that Iran and allies like Syria may start to feel so desperate that they will conclude that military conflict with Israel is their best option–if so, this would be a mistake on those nations’ part.

It could be that if Syria and/or Iran transfer chemical or biological weapons to terrorist groups (or even “dirty bombs”) that actually use them against Israel, that Israel will use that as another justification to launch an attack.  If so, it may be that Iran and Syria will try to tell the world that Israel started the war, violated their sovereignty, and made up a false pretense to attack them.

The situation is tense in the Middle East and unless there are changes in Iran and Syria a war that greatly reduces the influence of the Shi’ite Iranians may well happen this year.

Obama and Netanyahu: Iran Has Some Time, But…

Monday, March 5th, 2012

COGwriter

US President Obama met with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu today and has made some comments related to Israel and Iran:

Obama: Window Remains for Peaceful Solution to Iran Nuclear IssueV

VOA, March 5, 2012: President Barack Obama says he believes there is still time to achieve a peaceful solution to the Iran nuclear issue, but that Iran’s leaders need to make a decision to forsake pursuit of nuclear weapons. Mr. Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed Iran, troubled Israel-Palestinian peace efforts, and the Arab Spring during a meeting at the White House…

The main issue in Monday’s discussions was Iran’s nuclear program and how much time remains for diplomacy and sanctions to turn Iran away from what the U.S. and Israel believe is a course toward developing a nuclear weapon.

In remarks to reporters before the talks, President Obama said it is unacceptable “for Israel to have a country with a nuclear weapon that has called for its destruction.”

Describing the U.S. commitment to Israel’s security as “rock solid,” Mr. Obama reiterated his view that more time is needed for sanctions and other pressure on Iran to work.

“We do believe that there is still a window that allows for a diplomatic resolution to this issue, but ultimately the Iranian regime has to make a decision to move in that direction, a decision that they have not made thus far,” said the president.

Pressure on Iran will be tightened, he said, adding he reserves all options. Mr. Obama repeated that his policy is not containment, but prevention of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons.

There was no direct mention of so-called “red lines,” steps by Iran, such as specific movement toward building a nuclear weapon, that might trigger military action by Israel or the United States.

But Prime Minister Netanyahu stressed what he called longstanding principles in the U.S.-Israel relationship, including recognition that Israel has a right to act on its own to preserve its security.

“Israel must have the ability always to defend itself by itself, against any threat, and that when it comes to Israel’s security, Israel has the right, the sovereign right, to make its own decisions,” said Netanyahu. “I believe that is why you appreciate, Mr. President, that Israel must reserve right to defend itself.”

Mr. Netanyahu said his “supreme responsibility” is to ensure that “Israel remains the master of its fate.”

President Obama said he and Prime Minister Netanyahu prefer to resolve the issue diplomatically, understanding the costs of any military action.

Offering what he called an “assurance” to the American and Israeli peoples, he said the U.S. and Israel will be in “close, constant consultation” during what he said he expects will be “a series of difficult months, I suspect, in 2012.”

It seems that the USA President is hinting that at some point in time (and perhaps during this election year) that the USA may decide to support Israel in an attack against Iran (the UK, Australia, and Canada could also get involved) if Iran does not agree to not become a nuclear power.  This type of attack would have devastating effects on Iran and would also cause the USA debt, terrorist, and other problems.  It could eliminate Iran as a major force in the Islamic world–something that I have written about for some time–as it is something that either needs to happen directly (through war) and/or indirectly (civil unrest and change in Iran).

The Israeli Prime Minister made some other comments as well:

Jerusalem Post 5 March 2012 – By HILARY LEILA KRIEGER AND HERB KEINON Prime Minister Netanyahu says US President Barack Obama “accepted with understanding” the Israeli position on Iran, despite emphasizing different approaches in public remarks.

Yet, while the USA President hope not to have a major war, I suspect that a regional war in the Middle East could get out of control, especially presuming Syria is involved. This may result in so much damage to Damascus (Isaiah 17:1) and/or Iran that it could spur massive outrage in the Islamic world.  Enough so that the primarily Sunni Arabs will likely decide that they need closer unity and will support some type of caliph/Mahdi and that the biblical King of the South will rise up.

According to the Bible, the King of the South (Daniel 11:40) will rise up and we will see if this happens sometime after a conflict with Iran.

As far as Syria goes, former Republican presidential nominee wants the USA to attack Syria as was also reported today:

CBS News – March 5, 2012 (CBS/AP) WASHINGTON – Sen. John McCain today called for the United States to lead an “international effort” involving air strikes on Syria’s military forces.

Syria is an ally of Iran and if the USA were to actually do what John McCain wants, this could unleash a regional war.  Furthermore, if President Assad of Syria believes that the USA may do this, and presuming he does not want to end up dead like Libya’s leader did, he may be tempted to launch an attack against Israel.

Syria is technically still at war with Israel and I have wondered (in writing) for quite some time if President Assad might attack Israel to divert attention against his own regime by his own people as well as the Arab League.

Since Iran repeatedly has stated that it wants to eliminate the nation of Israel and Syria has made statements indicating that it may attack Israel, I have often tended to report on Iran and Syria together as they might decide to attack Israel.  Or, in view of President Obama’s comments, Iran and/or Syria may do something to provoke Israel to attack and hope that the USA will not get directly involved.  Somehow, Iran (who is not the leader of the biblical King of the South in Daniel 11:40) will need to become less of a factor in the Islamic world and it may happen because it may miscalculate the strength of its adversaries.

This does not mean that I believe that Israel (or the USA and its allies for that matter) will end up without potentially severe losses, only that Iran and Syria may start to feel so desperate that they will conclude that military conflict with Israel is their best option–if so, this would be a mistake on those nations’ part.

Protestant Lent?

Monday, March 5th, 2012

COGwriter

Over the past several years, I have noticed that some Protestants sometimes are embracing the Roman Catholic season of Lent. Notice the following report about a Presbyterian church:

2012 season of Lent at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield

Suburban News – 5 March 2012

By Suburban News WESTFIELD — The Lent season kicked off on Wednesday, Feb. 22 with identical Ash Wednesday worship services (with the imposition of ashes) being offered at noon. and again at 8 p.m. This was a wonderful start for all to take this first step in their Lenten journey…On Palm Sunday, April 1, there will be two services…The communion service for Maundy Thursday, April 5, will begin at 7:30 p.m…Our Lenten journey comes to celebratory close with the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday, April 8.

Lent is a forty-day period of time that proceeds the Catholic holiday commonly called Easter. During this time, observers tend to give up something they like (such as a food, like meat or certain meals or a form of secular entertainment, like television) essentially as a form of “fasting” for the purposes of getting closer to God or for penance.

Specifically many:

…observe Lent by fasting, performing penance, giving alms, abstaining from amusements…(Ramm B. Lent. World Book Encyclopedia, 50th ed., Volume 12. Chicago, p. 175).

Here is how The Catholic Encyclopedia defines Lent:

The Teutonic word Lent, which we employ to denote the forty days’ fast preceding Easter, originally meant no more than the spring season (Thurston H. Transcribed by Anthony A. Killeen. A.M.D.G. Lent. The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume IX. Published 1910. New York: Robert Appleton Company. Nihil Obstat, October 1, 1910. Remy Lafort, Censor. Imprimatur. +John M. Farley, Archbishop of New York).

In other words, Lent means the Spring season (it may be of interest to note that Easter is a Teutonic word as well).

But since Lent means Spring and Lent now begins and is primarily in the Winter, where did it really come from?

The World Book Encyclopedia states:

Lent is a religious season observed in the spring…It begins on Ash Wednesday, 40 days before Easter, excluding Sundays, and ends on Easter Sunday (Ramm B. Lent. World Book Encyclopedia, 50th ed., Volume 12. Chicago, p. 175).

Ash Wednesday was observed almost two week ago by many associated with the Church of Rome, as well as various Protestants.

The falsely named Christianity Today reported:

The Beginning of Lent
Until the 600s, Lent began on Quadragesima (Fortieth) Sunday, but Gregory the Great (c.540-604) moved it to a Wednesday, now called Ash Wednesday, to secure the exact number of 40 days in Lent—not counting Sundays, which were feast days. Gregory, who is regarded as the father of the medieval papacy, is also credited with the ceremony that gives the day its name. (http://www.christianitytoday.com/ch/news/2004/lent.html)

So, “Ash Wednesday” apparently did not originate on a Wednesday. Of course, the entire lenten period is not from the Bible, hence it should be of no surprise that it has had various changes in its observation.

Perhaps I should also mention that the Eastern Orthodox Church does not celebrate Ash Wednesday.

The Bible

Neither the Bible, which was not written in a Teutonic language, nor its translations (which sometimes are) uses the terms Lent.

The Old Testament uses the term Spring four or so times, but in the context of wars, not fasting. It does, however, endorse certain religious observances for that time of the year. It also mentions that the year begins on the first day of a certain lunar month (called Abib or Nisan) which is normally the first day of Spring (though it does not actually use that term). Note that God defines when the year begins:

This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you (Exodus 12:2 NKJV, throughout unless otherwise noted).

The God-ordained religious festivals mentioned as occurring in what is the Spring season of the year include Passover, the Days of Unleavened Bread, and Pentecost.

Here is the mention of the first two:

‘These are the feasts of the LORD, holy convocations which you shall proclaim at their appointed times. On the fourteenth day of the first month at twilight is the LORD’s Passover. And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to the LORD; seven days you must eat unleavened bread (Leviticus 23:4-6).

The above were clearly observed by Jesus, the Apostles, and the early Church (for additional documentation, please see the articles Passover and the Early Church, Melito’s Homily on the Passover, and Should Christians Keep the Days of Unleavened Bread?).

Here is a couple of verses about the days of unleavened bread and eating:

Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. On the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel…For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, since whoever eats what is leavened, that same person shall be cutoff from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a native of the land. You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your habitations you shall eat unleavened bread (Exodus 12:15,19-20).

Since no leaven is allowed to be eaten during the days of unleavened bread, this could be considered as a form of fasting. It however, differs from the Lenten forms of fasting in that it begins the day after Passover and lasts for seven days. Most (and in some years, all) of the Lenten fasting occurs prior to the Passover (and most of it occurs in the Winter, not the Spring season, in spite of the fact that Lent means Spring).

The next observance mentioned in the Old Testament comes during the days of unleavened bread:

Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you come into the land which I give to you, and reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest to the priest. He shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted on your behalf; on the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it (Leviticus 23:10-11).

Jesus Himself (who was also our Passover 1 Corinthians 5:7), fulfilled this sometime after He was resurrected (cf. John 20:17,27 KJV). This day was used both in the Old Testament and New Testament times to count when the next holy day would occur. Here is the Old Testament comment:

‘And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed. Count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath (Leviticus 23:15-16).

The Greek term, used in the New Testament, is Pentecost, which means 50th, from the practice of it being the fiftieth day from the wave sheaf offering. The above are all the religious periods that the Old Testament mentioned that occur in the Spring (none, other than the weekly Sabbath, occur in the Winter season).

The term Spring is not mentioned in the New Testament. When referring to the early Spring season, the New Testament mentions biblical holy days, like Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread (for early Spring) and Pentecost (for late Spring)–it also mentions that Jesus and/or His disciples observed all of those. While the New Testament does mention a period called “the Fast” (Acts 27:9), scholars of most religious communities admit that this is referring to what is called in Hebrew Yom Kippur or Day of Atonement in English, which is a holy day that occurs in the Fall.

Thus, there is no specific Winter-Spring fast that the Bible (Old or New Testaments) teaches should be followed.

The Days of Unleavened Bread

The Apostle Paul taught:

Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth (1 Corinthians 5:7-8).

There is no doubt that early Christians kept Passover. And there is substantial evidence to show that the kept the Days of Unleavened Bread, and not Lent, in the Spring. Notice, for example, a letter than Polycrates sent to the Roman Bishop Victor in the late second century:

We observe the exact day; neither adding, nor taking away. For in Asia also great lights have fallen asleep, which shall rise again on the day of the Lord’s coming, when he shall come with glory from heaven, and shall seek out all the saints. Among these are Philip, one of the twelve apostles, who fell asleep in Hierapolis; and his two aged virgin daughters, and another daughter, who lived in the Holy Spirit and now rests at Ephesus; and, moreover, John, who was both a witness and a teacher, who reclined upon the bosom of the Lord, and, being a priest, wore the sacerdotal plate. He fell asleep at Ephesus. And Polycarp in Smyrna, who was a bishop and martyr; and Thraseas, bishop and martyr from Eumenia, who fell asleep in Smyrna. Why need I mention the bishop and martyr Sagaris who fell asleep in Laodicea, or the blessed Papirius, or Melito, the Eunuch who lived altogether in the Holy Spirit, and who lies in Sardis, awaiting the episcopate from heaven, when he shall rise from the dead? All these observed the fourteenth day of the passover according to the Gospel, deviating in no respect, but following the rule of faith. And I also, Polycrates, the least of you all, do according to the tradition of my relatives, some of whom I have closely followed. For seven of my relatives were bishops; and I am the eighth. And my relatives always observed the day when the people put away the leaven. I, therefore, brethren, who have lived sixty-five years in the Lord, and have met with the brethren throughout the world, and have gone through every Holy Scripture, am not affrighted by terrifying words. For those greater than I have said ‘ We ought to obey God rather than man’ (Eusebius. Church History, Book V, Chapter 24. Translated by Arthur Cushman McGiffert. Excerpted from Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series Two, Volume 1. Edited by Philip Schaff and Henry Wace. American Edition, 1890. Online Edition Copyright © 2004 by K. Knight).

Notice that Polycrates said that he and the other early church leaders (like the Apostles Philip and John, and their successors like Polycarp, Thraseas, Eumenia, Sagaris, Papirius, Melito) would not deviate from the Bible, and that they knew the Bible taught them to keep the Passover on the correct date, and not on a Sunday. Also notice that they always observed the day when the people put away the leaven. Polycrates also reminded the Roman bishop that true followers of Christ “obey God rather than men”.

Notice what a respected Protestant scholar reported about the second century:

The most important in this festival was the passover day, the 14th of Nisan…In it they ate unleavened bread, probably like the Jews, eight days through…there is no trace of a yearly festival of the resurrection among them…the Christians of Asia Minor appealed in favor of their passover solemnity on the 14th Nisan to John (Gieseler, Johann Karl Ludwig. A Text-book of Church History. Translated by Samuel Davidson, John Winstanley Hull, Mary A. Robinson. Harper & brothers, 1857, Original from the University of Michigan, Digitized Feb 17, 2006, p. 166).

The Days of Unleavened Bread will be from April 7-April 13 this year, with Passover observed after sunset on April 5th (which is the beginning of the 14th of Nisan).

In the late third century, Anatolius of Alexandria wrote the following:

I am aware that very many other matters were discussed by them, some of them with considerable probability, and others of them as matters of the clearest demonstration, by which they endeavour to prove that the festival of the Passover and unleavened bread ought by all means to be kept after the equinox…

But nothing was difficult to them with whom it was lawful to celebrate the Passover on any day when the fourteenth of the moon happened after the equinox. Following their example up to the present time all the bishops of Asia—as themselves also receiving the rule from an unimpeachable authority, to wit, the evangelist John, who leant on the Lord’s breast, and drank in instructions spiritual without doubt—were in the way of celebrating the Paschal feast, without question, every year, whenever the fourteenth day of the moon had come, and the lamb was sacrificed by the Jews after the equinox was past; not acquiescing, so far as regards this matter, with the authority of some…(THE PASCHAL CANON OF ANATOLIUS OF ALEXANDRIA. Chapters V,X, p. 415, 419).

This should be proof to any with “eyes to see and ears to hear” that some who professed Christ were keeping the Days of Unleavened Bread centuries after Jesus died. Could this have ended up being changed and called Lent?

40 Days?

When did the Church of Rome adopt forty-day fasts? That is a difficult question to know for certain, but it appears to have not been that consistent until the fourth or fifth centuries, and it was not uniform even there until later. Notice:

Be this as it may, we find in the early years of the fourth century the first mention of the term tessarakoste. It occurs in the fifth canon of the Council of Nicea (A.D. 325), where there is only question of the proper time for celebrating a synod, and it is conceivable that it may refer not to a period but to a definite festival, e.g., the Feast of the Ascension, or the Purification, which Ætheria calls quadragesimæ de Epiphania…In the time of Gregory the Great (590-604) there were apparently at Rome six weeks of six days each, making thirty-six fast days in all, which St. Gregory, who is followed therein by many medieval writers, describes as the spiritual tithing of the year, thirty-six days being approximately the tenth part of three hundred and sixty-five. At a later date the wish to realize the exact number of forty days led to the practice of beginning Lent upon our present Ash Wednesday… (Lent. The Catholic Encyclopedia).

The length of time for observing Lent varied through the ages. For many years, it was considered a 36-day period of fast. By the reign of Charlemagne, about A.D. 800, four days were added making it 40 (Ramm B. Lent. World Book Encyclopedia, 50th ed., Volume 12. Chicago, p. 175).

The term tessarakoste means fortieth and it is not clear that this had anything to do with what is now known as Lent in the early fourth century–though some type of forty-day fasts were being observed then. Into the fifth century, Rome apparently had a different length for fasting, and it took a while for forty-days to become somewhat standard:

Still, this principle was differently understood in different localities, and great divergences of practice were the result. In Rome, in the fifth century, Lent lasted six weeks, but according to the historian Socrates there were only three weeks of actual fasting, exclusive even then of the Saturday and Sunday and if Duchesne’s view may be trusted, these weeks were not continuous, but were the first, the fourth, and sixth of the series, being connected with the ordinations…But the number forty, having once established itself, produced other modifications. It seemed to many necessary that there should not only be fasting during the forty days but forty actual fasting days. Thus we find Ætheria in her “Peregrinatio” speaking of a Lent of eight weeks in all observed at Jerusalem, which, remembering that both the Saturday and Sunday of ordinary weeks were exempt, gives five times eight, i.e., forty days for fasting. On the other hand, in many localities people were content to observe no more than a six weeks’ period, sometimes, as at Milan, fasting only five days in the week after the oriental fashion (Ambrose, “De Elia et Jejunio”, 10). In the time of Gregory the Great (590-604) there were apparently at Rome six weeks of six days each, making thirty-six fast days in all, which St. Gregory, who is followed therein by many medieval writers, describes as the spiritual tithing of the year, thirty-six days being approximately the tenth part of three hundred and sixty-five. At a later date the wish to realize the exact number of forty days led to the practice of beginning Lent upon our present Ash Wednesday, but the Church of Milan, even to this day adheres to the more primitive arrangement (Christian Worship, 243) (Lent. The Catholic Encyclopedia).

While the Bible does endorse that Christians should fast, no forty-day period is ever proscribed. Here is basically what Jesus Himself taught:

Then they said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?” And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days” (Luke 5:33-36).

Thus apparently Christ’s disciples did not fast much while Jesus was alive and would fast after He was to be taken away. However, as even Catholic scholars admit, there is no evidence that the apostles initiated any type of forty-day fast.

Where Did the Forty-Day Lenten Fast Come From?

Although the answer of this may not be entirely clear, there are some indications.

As quoted earlier, the Apostle Paul invoked keeping Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread (1 Corinthians 5:7-8).

Thus, while the Apostle Paul specifically endorsed the observance of Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread, he did not do so for something called Lent.

However, because the Days of Unleavened Bread involve a seven-day “fast” from leaven, it may be that some associated with Rome and Egypt felt that an abstinence period would be appropriate, but the amount of time varied.

Notice what the Catholic Socrates Scholasticus admitted around the beginning of the fifth century:

The fasts before Easter will be found to be differently observed among different people. Those at Rome fast three successive weeks before Easter, excepting Saturdays and Sundays. Those in Illyrica and all over Greece and Alexandria observe a fast of six weeks, which they term ‘The forty days’ fast.’ Others commencing their fast from the seventh week before Easter, and fasting three five days only, and that at intervals, yet call that time ‘The forty days’ fast.’ It is indeed surprising to me that thus differing in the number of days, they should both give it one common appellation; but some assign one reason for it, and others another, according to their several fancies. One can see also a disagreement about the manner of abstinence from food, as well as about the number of days. Some wholly abstain from things that have life: others feed on fish only of all living creatures: many together with fish, eat fowl also, saying that according to Moses, Genesis 1:20 these were likewise made out of the waters. Some abstain from eggs, and all kinds of fruits: others partake of dry bread only; still others eat not even this: while others having fasted till the ninth hour, afterwards take any sort of food without distinction. And among various nations there are other usages, for which innumerable reasons are assigned. Since however no one can produce a written command as an authority, it is evident that the apostles left each one to his own free will in the matter, to the end that each might perform what is good not by constraint or necessity. Such is the difference in the churches on the subject of fasts (Socrates Scholasticus. Ecclesiastical History, Volume V, Chapter 22).

Since the Babylonians took over the Greeks and the Egyptians, that may have been when they started this practice.

Notice:

But the original length of the fast, traced back to Babylon was a “forty-days” fast in the spring of the year (Laynard’s Nineveh and Babylon, chapter 4, page 93). That is why it bore its name of “40 days”! (Hoeh, H. Did Jesus Observe Lent? Plain Truth. February 1982, p. 30).

It is likely that the idea of a forty-day fast came from Alexandria in Egypt or from Greece.

The historian Alexander Hislop apparently felt so as he wrote:

The forty days’ abstinence of Lent was directly borrowed from the worshippers of the Babylonian goddess. Such a Lent of forty days, “in the spring of the year,” is still observed by the Yezidis or Pagan Devil-worshippers of Koordistan, who have inherited it from their early masters, the Babylonians. Such a Lent of forty days was held in spring by the Pagan Mexicans, for thus we read in Humboldt, where he gives account of Mexican observances: “Three days after the vernal equinox…began a solemn fast of forty days in honour of the sun.” Such a Lent of forty days was observed in Egypt, as may be seen on consulting Wilkinson’s Egyptians. This Egyptian Lent of forty days, we are informed by Landseer, in his Sabean Researches, was held expressly in commemoration of Adonis or Osiris, the great mediatorial god. At the same time, the rape of Proserpine seems to have been commemorated, and in a similar manner; for Julius Firmicus informs us that, for “forty nights” the “wailing for Proserpine” continued; and from Arnobius we learn that the fast which the Pagans observed, called “Castus” or the “sacred” fast, was, by the Christians in his time, believed to have been primarily in imitation of the long fast of Ceres, when for many days she determinedly refused to eat on account of her “excess of sorrow,” that is, on account of the loss of her daughter Proserpine, when carried away by Pluto…

Among the Pagans this Lent seems to have been an indispensable preliminary to the great annual festival in commemoration of the death and resurrection of Tammuz, which was celebrated by alternate weeping and rejoicing, and which, in many countries, was considerably later than the Christian festival, being observed in Palestine and Assyria in June, therefore called the “month of Tammuz”; in Egypt, about the middle of May, and in Britain, some time in April. To conciliate the Pagans to nominal Christianity, Rome, pursuing its usual policy, took measures to get the Christian and Pagan festivals amalgamated, and, by a complicated but skilful adjustment of the calendar, it was found no difficult matter, in general, to get Paganism and Christianity–now far sunk in idolatry–in this as in so many other things, to shake hands…

Let any one only read the atrocities that were commemorated during the “sacred fast” or Pagan Lent, as described by Arnobius and Clemens Alexandrinus, and surely he must blush for the Christianity of those who, with the full knowledge of all these abominations, “went down to Egypt for help” to stir up the languid devotion of the degenerate Church, and who could find no more excellent way to “revive” it, than by borrowing from so polluted a source; the absurdities and abominations connected with which the early Christian writers had held up to scorn. That Christians should ever think of introducing the Pagan abstinence of Lent was a sign of evil; it showed how low they had sunk, and it was also a cause of evil; it inevitably led to deeper degradation. Originally, even in Rome, Lent, with the preceding revelries of the Carnival, was entirely unknown; and even when fasting before the Christian Pasch was held to be necessary, it was by slow steps that, in this respect, it came to conform with the ritual of Paganism. What may have been the period of fasting in the Roman Church before sitting of the Nicene Council does not very clearly appear, but for a considerable period after that Council, we have distinct evidence that it did not exceed three weeks (Hislop A. Two Babylons. pp. 104-106).

Hence we see that the so-called Christian observance of Lent is apparently a continuation of widespread ancient pagan practices that were subtly incorporated into mainstream Christianity over the centuries.

But the original practices of the earliest Christians was to observe Passover and the Days of Unleavened Bread. Some apparently thought compromise with non-biblical holidays would substitute for biblical ones like the Days of Unleavened Bread.

Of course, since Lent and Ash Wednesday are not biblically-enjoined holidays and the Days of Unleavened Bread are, Protestants who claim that they get their doctrine only from the Bible (the rallying cry for the Reformation Protestants was sola scriptura–the Bible alone) should ask themselves why they follow the Church of Rome instead of scripture on these points.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – A rally for Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum was disrupted for 20 minutes on Sunday by Occupy Wall Street protestors chanting, “Get your hate out of our state,” and “Pro-life, pro-war, what are you fighting for?”

This is not the first time that the Occupy Movement has disrupted Rick Santorum:

The State Column – ‎Feb 13, 2012‎

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum was confronted by Occupy Tacoma protesters in the state of Washington Monday, the same day that Washington Governor Christine Gregoire signed a same sex marriage bill into law,

So,  apparently some of the Occupy Movement are offended about Rick Santorum’s views.  And while I will not support many of his views on the military, I support any who support proper biblical morality and am disappointed that some in the Occupy Movement have distanced themselves from biblical truths.  Abortion and homosexual marriage are wrong.

In the past, covetousness was one of the problems I raised about Occupy (see CBS: Occupy Protests Go to ‘Chaos’ and  Occupy Movement Spreading, and Some Biblical Comments),  this moving in to support abortion and homosexual marriage by some of them is also disturbing

Russia Votes for Putin: What Might this Mean?

Russians have been voting today and the polls are basically now closed there:

Los Angeles Times – ‎4 March 2012

REPORTING FROM MOSCOW — Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin claimed victory for a new term as president after early results in Sunday’s election showed him taking an insurmountable lead.
March 4, 2012

MOSCOW—Russians went to the polls in large numbers Sunday as Vladimir Putin sought to cement his political control with another term as president even as poll observers reported signs of widespread violations.

Polls show Mr. Putin is likely to win the at least 50% of the vote needed to avoid a runoff, but he is facing the toughest challenge to his authority since he took power 12 years ago.

Russians head to polls in presidential elections expected to return Putin to Kremlin

‎Fox News March 4, 2012…

Putin, who was president in 2000-2008, is expected to easily win the Sunday election against four challengers. But if credible evidence of vote manipulation emerges, it would bolster the determination of opposition forces to continue the unprecedented wave of protests that arose in December.

Thirty eight percent of Tver region’s electorate voted for Putin’s United Russia party in December, compared to the national average of 49 percent. Labutina feels she has to vote for Putin.

“We need to give him more time,” she said, speaking in an office equipped with a new computer, but also cracked and crumbling plaster on the ceiling. “Eight years in power, or even twelve, is not enough to make a difference.”

Other voters had similarly reluctant motives for bringing Putin back.

“I’m voting Putin just so things won’t get worse,” said Nikita, a 22-year-old geology student.

Russian vote complaints mount, Putin poised to win

The Associated Press – ‎4 March 2012
MOSCOW (AP) — Russian observers said Sunday they are seeing widespread violations in elections expected to return Vladimir Putin to the Kremlin, despite efforts to give the appearance of a fair vote.

David Miliband: Vladimir Putin is a ‘ruthless dictator’

ITN – 4 March 2012

Vladimir Putin is a “ruthless” dictator whose days are numbered, David Miliband said on Sunday as Russians went to the polls to choose their next president. Mr Miliband warned it would be wrong to underestimate the “intelligent” leader but predicted he will not survive a six-year term at the Kremlin…Vladimir Putin, who was president from 2000-2008, is expected to easily win the election against four challengers.

So, there is discontent in Russia, many feel that the election held today was manipulated and the vast majority of reports state that Vladimir Putin will win.

Vladimir Putin has repeatedly called for a militarily stronger Russia as well as one allied with many other nations in Asia (as well as some in Europe, like the Ukraine)–see TW: The Eurasian Union is Coming and Russia Wants It.

While some believe that Vladimir Putin is overplaying his hand in getting the office of president back (and there likely will be protests), Bible prophecy shows that his goal of a Eurasian Union with Russia as part of it will form.

The Bible shows that a Eurasian military union will happen involving those from the north AND the east and frighten the European King of the North:

…the king of the North… 43 He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels. 44 But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many. 45 And he shall plant the tents of his palace between the seas and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him (Dan 11:40,43-45).

The New Testament shows that a group of nations known as the Kings of the East will form:

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. 15 Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” 16 And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon (Revelation 16:12-16).

Russia, with a border that extends east to the Pacific ocean, would appear to be one of the Kings of the East (China, Korea, Japan, and other Asian nations, like India, are also probably all part of this eastern confederation.

In other parts of the Old Testament, it is shown that a northern people (which most logically would seem to be Russia) will be part of the force that concerns and then eventually invades, end time Babylon (which will be a European power):

50:41 “Behold, a people shall come from the north,
And a great nation and many kings
Shall be raised up from the ends of the earth.
42 They shall hold the bow and the lance;
They are cruel and shall not show mercy.
Their voice shall roar like the sea;
They shall ride on horses,
Set in array, like a man for the battle,
Against you, O daughter of Babylon.

43 “The king of Babylon has heard the report about them,
And his hands grow feeble;
Anguish has taken hold of him,
Pangs as of a woman in childbirth…”(Jeremiah 50:41-43).

Thus, the European empire (the “daughter of Babylon”) is to be destroyed by a northern (apparently Russian led) force. And probably one that cooperates with nations in the East, as well as maybe Iran, and possibly the Ukraine.

Notice also that the Bible shows Babylon tied together with birth pains/pangs to a group from a far country:

1 The burden against Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw.
2 “Lift up a banner on the high mountain,Raise your voice to them;Wave your hand, that they may enter the gates of the nobles. 3 I have commanded My sanctified ones;I have also called My mighty ones for My anger–Those who rejoice in My exaltation.” 4 The noise of a multitude in the mountains, Like that of many people! A tumultuous noise of the kingdoms of nations gathered together! The LORD of hosts musters The army for battle. 5 They come from a far country, From the end of heaven–The LORD and His weapons of indignation,To destroy the whole land. 6 Wail, for the day of the LORD is at hand!It will come as destruction from the Almighty. 7 Therefore all hands will be limp, Every man’s heart will melt, 8 And they will be afraid. Pangs and sorrows will take hold of them; They will be in pain as a woman in childbirth; They will be amazed at one another; Their faces will be like flames (Isaiah 13:1-8).

Thus, both the accounts in Jeremiah and Isaiah seem related to the same invaders. This is referring to an end time confederation that has a distance to travel–apparently a type of union of powers from the east including Russia, who is also the major power of the far north.

And this type of confederation is something that Vladimir Putin has repeatedly called for.   This is something he will continue to advocate and work towards.  And whether he leads it or not, it will form.

A northern confederation (that appears to be led by Russia and probably includes the far north and far east/Pacific coast portion of Asia) will destroy the European Babylon. The following passage may also apply:

9 For behold, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon
An assembly of great nations from the north country,
And they shall array themselves against her;
From there she shall be captured.
Their arrows shall be like those of an expert warrior;
None shall return in vain. (Jeremiah 50:9)

So, although many worry that Russia will be a major military threat to the USA, the reality is that the Bible indicates that it will be the Europeans that will receive a massive attack involving Russia. And perhaps not too many years from now.  And this is something that Vladimir Putin advocates and plans to continue to work towards making it happen.

Purim: Israel vs. Iran

Painting of 1625 Titled ‘Feast of Esther’

COGwriter

From sunset March 7th to sunset March 9th is the Feast of Purim (some Jews only keep the first day), which comes from the Book of Esther:

20 And Mordecai wrote these things and sent letters to all the Jews, near and far, who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, 21 to establish among them that they should celebrate yearly the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar, 22 as the days on which the Jews had rest from their enemies, as the month which was turned from sorrow to joy for them, and from mourning to a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and joy, of sending presents to one another and gifts to the poor. 23 So the Jews accepted the custom which they had begun, as Mordecai had written to them, 24 because Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to annihilate them, and had cast Pur (that is, the lot), to consume them and destroy them; 25 but when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letter that this wicked plot which Haman had devised against the Jews should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

26 So they called these days Purim, after the name Pur. Therefore, because of all the words of this letter, what they had seen concerning this matter, and what had happened to them, 27 the Jews established and imposed it upon themselves and their descendants and all who would join them, that without fail they should celebrate these two days every year, according to the written instructions and according to the prescribed time, 28 that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city, that these days of Purim should not fail to be observed among the Jews, and that the memory of them should not perish among their descendants.

29 Then Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, with Mordecai the Jew, wrote with full authority to confirm this second letter about Purim. 30 And Mordecai sent letters to all the Jews, to the one hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth, 31 to confirm these days of Purim at their appointed time, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had prescribed for them, and as they had decreed for themselves and their descendants concerning matters of their fasting and lamenting. 32 So the decree of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim, and it was written in the book.  (Esther 9:20-32)

(Note: Since Purim is a national holiday and is not listed as a holy day in Leviticus 23 or elsewhere, it is not a biblically required observation for those in the Church of God.  As Esther 9:27-28 points out it was a Jewish invention for Jews.)

About two weeks or so ago, LCG’s Mario Hernandez and I were discussing the Book of Esther in light of the current events in Iran and Israel.  He correctly mentioned that Iran and Israel had been allies during the time of the Shah of Iran and that in the time of Esther it was only a minority of the Persian empire that wanted to eliminate the Jews.  He speculated that a regime change in Iran (which could be brought about by many means, including attacks by Israel) may change the relationship between the Jews and Persians (Iranians) again.

Interestingly, the connection between the original Purim and today has not been lost by all.  Notice a news item from today:

Iran and Israel, It’s Purim All Over Again

March 4, 2012

Some 2,000 years ago, the Jewish people, Exiled in the vast empire of Persia faced a plot engineered by the king’s chief minister to annihilate them…Today the Jewish People in their historical homeland, the Jewish State of Israel, are once again being openly threatened by an evil  Persian Empire of Terror known today as Iran. Today’s Hamans – Iranian “Supreme Leader” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Hizbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, to name just a few, are no less committed to the destruction of the Jewish People as were Haman and his ten sons of old. They openly and clearly call for Israel’s destruction and make no secret of the nuclear weapons, the type that can wipe out the Jews in one day…

Among the cohorts to today’s Iranian Hamans are the scientists working feverishly to enrich sufficient uranium to make a nuclear bomb. One such scientist was Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan Behdast assassinated in early January. Should anyone doubt Mostafa’s personal commitment to the cause of mass murder of Jews, his wife proudly clarified that telling point.

Earlier this month Iran’s FARS News Agency (FNA) reported that Fatemeh Bolouri Kashani, wife of the aforementioned assassinated Iranian scientist who was a senior official at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility, told the FNA: “Mostafa’s ultimate goal was the annihilation of Israel.”…

The primary lesson of Purim for today’s Jewish leaders is that just as in the original Purim story the Jews had to ultimately defend themselves so too today the Jews cannot pin their national survival on vague promises of support as the Iranian nuclear clock continues to tick.

As Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu heads off to Washington to meet with US President Barack Obama on the week of the Purim holiday, he will no doubt have in mind the lesson of Purim: the only ones who can be relied on to defend the Jews are the Jews themselves.

While there is a lot of truth in the above, the only one who could be relied upon to defend the Jews is God Almighty–yet He only promised to do that if they obeyed Him.  And while I do not believe that Bible prophecy allows for Iran to eliminate the nation of Israel, the reality is that if there is a war between Iran and Israel, Israel will suffer much more losses than the ancient nation did during the time of Esther.

Another news story had the following:

Think Again: Purim in contemporary guise

Jerusalem Post

Prominent Sunni theologian Yusuf al- Qaradawi, hailed as a returning hero in Tahrir Square, calls upon his followers to “kill the Jews wherever you find them.” The Hamas Charter is equally explicit that not a single Jew should be left alive in Palestine. And most ominous, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei describes Israel just like the Nazis described the Jewish people – as a “cancer.” Cancers must be eradicated. This Purim, we will celebrate the Jewish people’s acceptance of the Torah anew, this time without Divine compulsion. Those who had been so far away as to partake of Ahasuerus’s banquet, which celebrated the failure to rebuild the Temple, rediscovered their common mission and the unity of Sinai – “as one man, with one heart.” Only then were they delivered from enemies dedicated to “destroy, kill and exterminate” every Jew.

It seems that the above article is hinting that the Jews need to repent and live by the Bible.  I agree.

Here is another news item of interest:

Stand Up Barack‎ American Free Press

March 02, 2012…

Not once has Obama publicly denounced Israel’s “imminent” plans to wage a preemptive strike. Rather, the only element Obama and Netanyahu officials seem to be haggling over is the timeframe. Even this point is crucial because last year, the U.S.-NATO led invasion against Muammar Qadaffi’s Libya occurred on March 19—the Jewish festival of Purim. President George W. Bush’s “shock and awe” attack on Iraq in 2003 also began on Purim.

While this does not mean that Israel will necessarily attack Iran this week, I had not been aware of the timing of Purim and the two attacks mentioned above.

Currently, Israel believes it has little choice but to plan to attack or somehow try to neutralize Iran. Syria is realizing that it is being cut off from much of the world and Iran is one of its few reliable allies. Iran and Syria may well team up against Israel–and this could include using biological and chemical weapons against Israel. This could be something that Syria may regret (cf. Isaiah 17:1).

It should be mentioned that the President of Iran believes that ultimately it is his special calling to create enough chaos in order to stimulate the arrival of an Islamic leader that he and others refer to as the Imam Mahdi. This leader is supposed to unite Islam and root out problems within its religion. But Iran is not quite ready for that yet, though its leadership believes that the Iman Mahdi has made his presence known (Mahmoud Ahmadinejad: World Order About to Collapse, Mahdi Behind it) and it hopes that he will become publicly known soon (see Iran’s Leader Preparing for ‘Armageddon’ and the Imam Mahdi).

For various reasons, the Imam Mahdi sounds a lot like the final King of the South that the Bible foretells (Daniel 11:40-43). And he may be part of a deal that will affect the USA and its Anglo-allies (Psalm 83:4-8). And this will not be good.

Yet, the final King of the South will not be Iran (Iran is basically east of Jerusalem), but apparently Arabic (which includes those of Egypt, Libya, etc.). Yet, Iran’s actions and rhetoric (as well as rhetoric from the USA, Syria, and Israel) continue to stir up the situation in the Middle East.  The leadership in Iran may wish to re-read the Book of Esther.

The situation in the Middle East is tense. Regional war involving Israel, Iran, Syria, and others this year is a real possibility. Damascus, the capital of Syria, could become a ruinous heap (Isaiah 17:1). But this does not mean that the USA and Israel would get off without troubles and cost. Just like Afghanistan was a major problem for the old Soviet Union, Iran could be a major drain on the USA (and at minimum would raise terrorist issues).

It may take a regional war in the Middle East and perhaps terrorist attacks on USA-related targets for the apparent peace deal of Daniel 9:27 to take place. The situation in Syria, Iran, and Israel will change–and military conflict may well be one of those changes.
